I like to fly high and the blues can never keep up with me. Astarteth replied matter of fact. She was not going to stay that golds were not worth the wasted time. Her opinion of herself was just as high as a bronze's or gold's was but don't tell her that. How goes your flight drills?
"I know right? Maybe they have a room for them in the house, like a large pet. Can you imagine, keeping a dragon like a pet? They are your mate, your partner." Kallista shook her head in contempt. Normally, she was not one for gossip but being with someone familiar that she trusted, the ex runner was happy to be able to voice her opinions. "At least here at High Reaches, we have our own weyr and don't have to share anything. I just wish they didn't ration the food so much."
"What gets me is the timing of this 'plague'. I know there are herbs and other stuff that can make it seem like one is sick..." She stopped there, eyes wide and mouth open at what she seemed to suggest. Quickly, she moved on. "But I am sure the healers know what they are about and have ruled everything but the plague out."

"Well enough," Raith nodded her head slightly. "Everyone makes errors on occasion but in general we do well. The wingleader is usually pleased with us at the end of the day." This last was said with a somewhat dismissive shrug; it was quite clear that the good opinion of that man and his dragon mattered to Raith not at all.
L'thor raised his eyebrows slightly at this turn in the conversation and lent back in his chair. "Foul play?... I hadn't considered it to be honest. There have been those rumors of course, about how much Julis hates the weyrleader but..." he trailed off and shrugged his shoulders. "As you say, the healers know what they're on about, and there were other people found sick than the weyrleader too." Honestly though, he wished he could believe it was a case of poisoning. If it was that, nobody else was in danger... Well, people like him weren't anyway. Those with rank might need to worry, but mere green riders had no cause for concern. Politics didn't care about them, and for once that would be an advantage... but it wasn't poison, it was plague. Plague didn't care who you were, everyone was fair game to sickness.

((sorry it's been forever! My brain officially died.))
I have heard your leader does not like greens. Or maybe he does not like us because we come from someplace else? Astarteth made this amazing leap of logic but failed to remember where that someplace else was even with the reminder of Ista just moments ago.
Kallista in the meanwhile had the decency to blush. She couldn't believe she had said or even suggested such things. Shaking her head and sipping some more water, she had the common sense to look embarrassed. "I am sorry L'thor. I am so on edge, like waiting for the other shoe to fall. It seems that I came to High Reaches to start a new life, it was an adventure. And Astar and I get hedged no matter which direction we fly."
She said this with a certain bitterness but tried to shake it off. As long as she flew straight and kept herself out of trouble, they would do fine. But she worried still. Astarteth had yet to get proddy here and with the general attitude of High Reaches.... Well, at least she wasn't at Telgar. "At least here, we are all on the same line of flight. I have been thinking about taking some time with Astar to go exploring. Maybe you and Raith would like to come?"

"Maybe he does dislike us, but it's his loss if so," Raith said with a snort, and shuffled her wings. "We greens are the most versatile of all dragons, after all. With enough greens you could easily make a working wing excluding all other colours. A wing of bronzes would never work, they're far too slow and clumsy."
"Don't worry about it," L'thor smiled faintly and gave a dismissive wave of his hand. "We're all edgey, all kinds of ideas spring into your head at such times. I've found myself wondering if the plague might be different this time and affect dragons too, for instance. Not very likely, but that doesn't mean I can get the thought out of my head." He could never be one of those who survived the loss of their lifemate, he simply couldn't imagine living on past Raith's death... Such morbid thoughts.
"You know, that sounds like a great idea," L'thor nodded to Kallista's suggestion eagerly. "Take some time out away from all of this just to fly... Did you have plans for this afternoon, or would you like to go now?" Now, now! Shards, the sooner the better; it was hard to worry about things while he was flying. Everything just seemed so... so perfect.

Yes. Mine says that green is her favorite color even before me. Of course, only I am important now. Astarteth replied with a matter of fact tone. She flicked her tail from side to side. A giant yawn and she was content. The only time bronzes seem quick is when they are chasing a fast tail.
"I have nothing planned as of the moment. I appreciate you calling us for a chat. At Ista, at least I had a few friends to speak with but here, everyone seems closed minded and closed mouth. As a runner, I could go into a room and listen to all the chatter." Kallista grimaced and thought back to her former life. "Maybe I have lost my touch?"
She did have her gear handy. A chance to just take off and fly straight would be nice. Or maybe explore the land around. "I am game and ready when you are, L'thor."

"Great!" L'thor grinned and hopped lightly to his feet, hastening across the weyr to grab his riding gear. "A good long fly is just what we need," he said as he donned his jacket, "I haven't flown just for fun since before this mess started." It actually hadn't been all that long, but it felt as though it had been. It was hard not to feel every moment lenghten when you thought that you might not be having many more of them.
As her rider approached, Raith rose to her feet to allow him to put on her straps, rumbling contentedly as he gave her shoulder a pat. "Well, no chasing for them for now," she smirked to the other green, "they can just look up at us with envy." Nothing could match the beauty and grace of a green in flight. Still smirking to herself, Raith extended a foreleg to allow her rider to mount. About time they did something just for fun again.

A few hours later...
Kallista waited for L'thor and Raith to land on their ledge. As soon as they landed, she and Astarteth followed suit. Pulling her helmet off, her face with flushed with laughter and happiness. They had played a game of "Catch Me If You Can" in the air with both greens having fun twisting and turning in the air, showing off their agility. It had been a while since she had done anything simply for fun.
"Oh L'thor! That was such a good time! We have to make a habit of it and not let this place get us down. Rare is the green that can keep pace with Astarteth's twists and turns. Thank you so much for calling us for a visit. It was a good day."
Now, Astarteth said smugly, you will be able to show those blues and browns a thing or two. What a merry chase you will lead them on.

"Oh quite," Raith gave a draconic smirk and bowed her head to her friend, "only the very, very best shall be able to catch me, and even then only because I admire his effort and let him!" She loved flights, always looked forward to them. It was just so nice to be the center of attention, to have so many males wanting her... She didn't need affirmation of her beauty, but it was nice to get it all the same.
"Yes!" L'thor removed his own helmet and shook out his hair; it probably looked all weird from being squashed under the leather cap but he didn't care, he was high on life and for once couldn't give a toss what he looked like. "I vote at least once a sevenday, I'm not sure I can remember when I last had so much fun. Oh, but we should see if we can get the other Istans to come next time; imagine the fun with all four of us!" Yes. A good exhausting fly, and then chatter about old times, and discussion of current events from their slightly altered perspective. It was high time he made more time for these old friends, he had forgotten how much fun they could be.
"Have a good evening then Kallista, Astarteth," still grinning he nodded to the pair, "and just give us a call next you want to go for a fly. Unless we're in drills, we'll be with you in the time it takes to make a jump between."
"Yes do," Raith rumbled softly as she addressed the other green, "I do enjoy flying with you. We must do it more often, give the boys a good show, eh?" Four beautiful greens blazing through the skies above them. Ha. They'd all want to give chase even though it was a flight not a Flight.
As the other pair departed, both L'thor and Raith resolved to see the other members of the tropical tetrad more often from now on. It had been too long since they'd had a day like that.
