Title - The destined pair

Description - The first meeting between Esune and Madelief that introduces Esune's immunity to Madelief's toxins and why he took it upon himself to raise her.

“Good bye everyone! Thank you for all your hard work today!”

Cheerfully waving goodbye to his coworkers a young man slung a small duffle bag over his shoulder before making for the exit. He had spent the past two days at the Clinique, curing a sudden epidemic of small illnesses that – based on the information gathered from the patients – had stemmed from coming the towns curry eating contest. Really! When would people learn that it isn’t exactly the smartest of ideas to shovel things down their mouths when they are unaware of what those things contain? The lack of common sense was astonishing.

Shivering as he stepped out of the heated building and into the chilling mid-winter air the long haired man subconsciously tugged the large woolen scarf even closer around his neck and face in order to block out the harshness of the bitter winds. The winter had never been his favorite of seasons and it really wasn’t hard to imagine why. A week before they had been graced with a good foot and a half of snow. This in itself was annoying, but combined with the fact that the snow had yet to melt it was clear why the season could get a bit agitating for even the most laid back of souls. No longer was the snow that beautiful, crisp and clean white color, but a dark brown or in some cases grey that seemed to occur after days of being left on the sidewalk. At least there wasn’t any snow left on the road.

The walk to his car was a short one that normally was uneventful at best. Sometimes he would see a doctor or nurse on the night shift as they made their way to the Clinique and even then he never bothered to extend the greetings further than a simple wave. Though for some reason today was different. He didn’t notice the small green colored child immediately as half her body had been hidden underneath a clump of darkly covered snow. In fact he probably would have overlooked her all together if she hadn’t started moving the sound of the crunching snow alerting the young man to her presence.

Black eyes met red as the two came face to face. Esune honestly could admit to having never met a stranger looking child in his life but he was far too kind to state this to the girls face. Instead he just smiled waving softly, a motion that was ignored for the most part by the strange looking child. When the girl made no movement to leave or really do anything for that matter he slowly approached, his face still alight with a soft and gentle smile.

“Why hello there Little Miss. You really shouldn’t be standing out here alone and without any warm clothing.”

His words were soft and gentle, the smile on his face unwavering even as the girl did nothing but stare up at him with a blank look on her impossibly dark eyes. After a few moments of nothing, he continued.

“Where are your parents? I’m sure they’re worried sick about you.”

Still nothing. He was beginning to think the girl must have been mute or perhaps unable to understand or speak. Staring down at the strangely colored and unresponsive little girl, Esune nibbled his lip as he tried to figure out just what he was supposed to do with the child. To leave her out here would be neglect, but at the same time he couldn’t exactly bring her home. Not when there was a possibility that her parents would be looking for her.

Letting out a sigh and running a hand through his hair, the dark haired male debated his options. There was no guarantee that if he went back to the Clinique and called the police that she would stay in that same spot and being unable to communicate with her left him at a large disadvantage. So leaving her here while he went for help was out.

Carefully reaching out for the little girls hand he couldn’t help but feel slightly uncomfortable as the child just continued watching him with those blank eyes. Would it hurt her to at least show some kind of expression? That blank stare was giving him the heebie-jeebies.

The moment his skin came in contact with hers he knew something was off. The white magic that flowed in him like blood in ones veins started to pulse in an unpleasant and semi-painful manner as it blocked any symptoms that may normally have occurred. That couldn’t be right! Surely contact with this child couldn’t be forcing his magic into a frenzy unless…

“You’re skin is toxic to the touch… fascinating.”

Well this was an interesting turn of events. The intellectual in Esune couldn’t help but be intrigued by this toxic toddler. With this new information it was fairly easy for him to determine why the young child was without a guardian. Normal humans would be unable to touch her without suffering from the toxins effects. Even Esune would for the most part be unable to touch her, as the toxin would only cause his magical energies to go into overdrive.

Truthfully, if he had been given a choice, he would have taken the girl to the orphanage to be adopted like a normal infant. Too bad he hadn’t been. Esune was smart enough to realize that at this point in time that he was one of the child’s best chances of having even some semblance of a normal life. After all, whilst skin on skin contact he had with her would be uncomfortable, it wouldn’t result in the same effects as those without his high amount of concentrate white magic.

Stealing himself for the inevitable surge of energy, he once more reached out to take hold of her shoulder, cringing at the unpleasant sensation coursed through his body once more. It was like being electrically shocked repeatedly all over your body.

“Come on Little Miss… we have a lot of hard days ahead of us.”

The girl remained unresponsive even as he led her to his car, buckled her up and drove away completely unaware of the bond that would eventually form between them.

Title - Bug That is not Bug

Description - Thinking that Madelief is in need of a friend to keep her company , Esune takes her to the pet store, where she chooses a rather fitting companion.

Note 1 - I dedicate this to Thali, who during a informal roleplay between Howl, Maddy and Esune gave me the idea for Madelief's love of spiders.

Note 2 - A kind of prelude journal entry is being written that will describe what is and isn't affected by Maddy's poisons. While this is posted prior to that, in their time-line the journal entry's information comes first.

Letting out a small sigh and rubbing the back of his head with the hand that wasn’t setting the car into a parking position, Esune chanced a glance at his adopted child through his rear view mirror, examining the eerily blank expression on the toddlers face. A normal child would have been bouncing up and down on the leather seat of his car the entire ride to the pet store, screaming unnecessary things and otherwise grating on the young doctor’s nerves. However, Madelief was not a normal child – not in the slightest. He actually preferred this quiet little girl to the other children her age, as strange and creepy as she could be she was still a step above the loud and obnoxious children who seemed to frequent her daycare.

“Aren’t you excited Maddy? You can get whatever animal you want! Well, at least fish or reptile wise. I don’t think you’d be able to handle a mammal with your… special ability.”

The child looked up at him for only a brief moment before once again turning her attention back out the window, her eyes just as blank as her expression as she stared up at him in a way that gave the poor male a slight case of heebie-jeebies. It wasn’t that he was scared of his daughter, just a bit intimidated by her lack of facial expressions. At least, this is what he tried to assure himself. He loved her, or at least, that’s what he wanted to do. She never really seemed too fond of any of his attempts to bond.

The three minutes it took to get Madelief out of her safety seat was done in awkward silence, not that he expected any different from a girl who barely understood even the easiest aspects of the English language. Silent and creepy. That was his daughter all right. Settling her down on the graveled ground and ignoring the way his skin tingled unpleasantly at the touch, he waited for the child to take in her surrounding before offering her his hand. If there was one thing he had noticed that Madelief liked to do; it was survey her surroundings. Every little thing had to be looked over before she was willing to move even an inch from the safety of her own space. It was just another quirk that Esune didn’t quite understand. When Madelief was satisfied, she grasped his hand and looked up at him with those large, emotionless eyes and the two entered the store, a silent understanding passing through them.

‘Who needs words? We’re fine the way we are.’ He thought to himself with a soft smile, resisting the urge to ruffle the girl’s purple hair.

The store was filled to the brim with animals of all shapes and sizes, everything from goldfish to a rather impressive looking snake that must have been at least twice the size of Maddy. The stench of animal feces and hair was almost unbearable, and when combined with the squawking of the birds in the back, it was difficult to see how anyone could work in such conditions. Not that the Clinic was much better.

A good forty minutes was spent simply walking down the aisles lined with the shops living merchandise, examining each and everything on the shelf’s while Esune carefully managed to give any other patrons a wide berth; lest someone come in contact with Madelief’s poisonous skin. He didn’t need any more headaches – the one from the birds was bad enough. By the time Madelief had decided, Esune could have sworn that he was going deaf in one ear from all the screeching. Coming to stand beside his child, he lent down to the small girls level to examine her choice.

When he came face to face with the large fuzzy monstrosity he suddenly wished he hadn’t taken the chance to look over her choice. The girl had chosen a Tarantula of all things. Why on earth of girl who could not be more than four seemed to be drawn to a large fuzzy spider was beyond him. Just the sight of the fuzzy, eight-legged creature seemed to make the doctor fidget, though he knew better than to think that he could persuade the girl out of her choice. Madelief was notoriously stubborn after all.

“Want bug.” She said simply, reaching out to stroke the plastic see through cage as one of the arachnids legs tapped against it. Already the two were bonding. How cute.

“That isn’t a bug Maddy, it’s a tarantula, which I believe is a member of the arachnid family.”

The girl looked up with the first expression he had seen on her face all day, and even then it wasn’t really one that portrayed anything other than slight interest at the new information. At least she understood that the creature whose cage she held wasn’t a bug. Small, green hands reached out to grasp the clear sides of the makeshift cage, pulling the creature out of its perch upon the shelf before offering the entire thing to her father, waiting until he had clasped the cage himself before letting her hands fall to her side.

Esune cringed as the eight-legged beast was offered to him, though he showed no further feelings towards the girls choice, even as he collected the insects that would be this things dinner for the remainder of it life and handed the whole mess of creepy crawlies over the cashier. It was for Madelief happiness, he kept telling himself, even as the two of them entered the car with the girl’s new found friend. It was so that she would never feel lonely again – even if he was at work.

Glancing back towards his daughter for a brief moment before he pulled out of the parking spot, he assured himself that in the end it was worth it.
