Oh shards. She hadn't meant to mess everything up. Yulu probably hated her now. Biting her lip, Layla looked down at her lap. Was it so unreasonable? Really? Were you supposed to trust your friend who had been a healer for a few turns more than you'd trust somebody who had been one for decades? Seriously? That was mad!... But now Yulu was angry with her, she wouldn't want to see her anymore and... and she hadn't meant for that to happen!
"Yulu... I'm sorry. I don't know what normal practice really is for things like this because it hasn't happened to me before." She could feel tears forming behind her eyes, so she kept her head bowed. "For all I knew you were... I don't know, I just assumed it was normal but then you said that the best healer in the Weyr didn't approve of you?" Finding a tiny, tiny amount of backbone from somewhere she forced herself to look up and meet Yulu's eyes. "What was I supposed to think? That he's just a hidebound old idiot who can't see what... what... I don't know, who can't see that a different way of doing things is good? I just... I can't imagine a healer being like that, so that leaves either you doing weird things, or him disliking you for a personal reason that he shouldn't let interfere with professional things but he does anyway because people are like that. I don't know which of those it is, is it wrong for me to want to?"
She trailed off again and sagged into a depressed huddle. Now even Yulu didn't care that she'd cut her arm. She wanted her to go away, because she hadn't been relaxed with being treated by somebody who openly admitted that the head healer didn't think the way they did things was good. "I'll leave if you want," she said quietly, "but I... I just... I didn't mean to make you angry Yulu. I was just... scared, I guess." True the other girl didn't really sound angry, but she was probably just keeping it all inside. She hated her now. Because she hadn't been able to ignore Yulu's comment about the head healer thinking her style of healing wasn't the best for people for the love of the first egg, she'd lost a friend. Great. The world really did hate her.

"I'm not angry at you, so calm down. I'm trying to figure out a way to get you out of here without it looking like you got treated or someone already tried something on you, and the only way I can think to do that is something you probably won't want to do. You'd have to leave, go out somewhere for a while, and open your wound more before returning here to get it treated. A fresh wound will overlap the old wound and anything I may have done to you, so there won't be any suspicion tossed your way."
Yulu really was thinking, her mind running over a list of things she could give to the girl to make it so when she wounded herself further it wouldn't cause her extreme amounts of pain. She certainly would hurt yes, that being the point, but it wouldn't be unbearable. Still, she found it so odd that as a Healer she was telling someone to go away untreated and actually injure themselves further. It went against everything she had learned and stood for, but that was all she could offer to do when a patient outright refused to be treated by someone "not leveled".
"When you come back you're going to have to pretend it just happened, or you can use whatever excuse you want to use. You could deny that you ever got hurt in the kitchens in the first place if you need to keep your accident time more recent, and they're sure to believe you. I probably won't be in here when you come back, as I get sent away when the Head Healer returns and takes back over the infirmary, but don't worry. I won't tell them anything in advance so you can come in here without having to fret that they may already know in advance."
She gave a very weak smile, one that was hardly convincing, as she slowly rose to her feet and headed over to a small basin that was situated next to a pitcher. She poured the contents of it on her hands, the water washing away the blood and salves from her hand. Her fingers were always red so the stain could easily be explained, though she planned on re-wrapping the digits before anyone arrived and could question her. She didn't offer the water to Layla, as the girl needed to do it all on her own.
"When you're rinsing the wound make sure to get everything out of it, or they might pick up on something. I was using an herb that's good for healing open and raw wounds, and if you leave even the slightest bit in there they'll notice. I'm the only Senior Apprentice in the Weyr at the moment who has been trained in terms of treating Trauma, large cuts like what you have, so fingers will come pointing my way quickly if they find anything."

"But you didn't answer my question, and I don't just want to leave I want to know!" Feeling very faintly annoyed, Layla remained seated. "I panicked, I'm sorry, and I'm glad you're not angry with me for that but... could we just... I don't know... could we start again?" Sniffing, Layla wiped her face dry with her good hand. "I don't want to just go off and leave it for ages and then come back trying to make up some lie, you had good reason to start treating it rather than waiting for somebody else to come along... I was happy being treated by a senior apprentice, I was worried when she said that the head healer disapproved of her. Why? What is it you do that he doesn't like? Just... just... just dodging my question lets me imagine why it might be, and believe me with my imagination that's not great."
Somehow, feeling a bit put out had made her feel a bit less weepy. Not a lot, a slight poke would probably start her off again, but for now she'd managed to stop crying. Keep it up, and keep focused on Yulu. Why would a head healer disapprove of one of his senior apprentices? If he didn't think she was any good, why was she still a senior rather than knocked back down to junior? That didn't make any sense to her at all, it was all confusing and... no don't get worried and confused, that would start the tears again.
"I just want to know, Yulu," she added after a moment, "I've had time to think now, not just panic, and he must have some confidence in you if you're still a senior apprentice so... so... some come fix my arm and tell me what his problem is with you." Ha, there, that had been ballsy of her! "Please. If you don't mind. Sorry for letting you wash your hands off before I said that." Well, nearly anyway.

"If you really must know, it's just that he doesn't like my bedside manner, not my skills. I was raised to treat out on the sands and by learning on my feet, not through massive amounts of study at the Hall. Sure, I did go to the hall for a few Turns and was doing well there, top of my class, but I still don't have the same style that most people do. I'm pack it and go, don't fret over it, while many of these healers are slow to act."
Yulu came back and sat down by Layla, patting her knee once to signal the flitt to return to her. Song raised her head from where it had been resting against Layla's ribs and she slowly started to move, taking no more than a few steps to get to her person. She swiftly moved up to her usual spot on Yulu's shoulder, noticing that her person was twitching as she kept looking at Layla's arm. How long would it be before Yulu just said shard it and treated it anyway?

"Well, that's alright then." Layla smiled a little, relaxing at the reassurance. "There was really no need for all of that, was there?" she added with a sheepish grin. "I should just be a bit less... less... jumpy." But it was so hard, especially with the way everything around here was going. It seemed like the world just wanted to put her permenantly in panic mode. Eggs, plague, dragons, to be chosen or not... It was a lot to deal with for someone like her. Yulu seemed to be taking it all in her stride. She wished she could be like that. It was said that dragons didn't choose the people who were afraid. She hoped it wasn't true. She couldn't help being scared, she didn't want it to keep her from finding her lifemate.

"What do you mean by 'alright then'? It's always been alright, you just were a little nervous. It happens to the best of us, so don't let it get to you. It's not like I bite or anything, despite the rumors that are going around."
Yulu was clearly joking as she took Layla's arm in her hands again and went back to treating it, deciding that a good strong wrap would be much better than stitches. The wound wasn't deep enough to merit sewing together despite her having first thought of it as an option, and if Layla kept it all clean and wrapped properly it would heal just fine without the need of needle and thread. The young girl would probably enjoy that fact a lot more too, since Yulu was pretty sure she would faint over having to get stitches.
"As for this, all I need to do now is wrap it up. It's a lot cleaner then I thought and not nearly as deep, and it looks as though your skin will heal together without much aide. I'll wrap it up good and give you some salve to use when you change bandages later on, and then we'll call it a day. What do you think?"

Good. Everything was alright again... Well, no, not everything, but things were alright with Yulu and that was enough to make her smile for now. "That sounds fine to me," she said with a nod, "I'm glad I don't need it sewn up; everyone in the kitchen said it would, and that... person Perthan said how much it would hurt and how horrible it would look." She really did dislike that boy; he'd been unkind to her ever since she could remember. At least the journeyman in charge of the late shift had smacked him over the head fore that comment.
"Would you mind helping me with the bandages later, when I need to change them?" Layla added after a moment. "I've never done it before so I'd want to make sure I was doing it right." Last thing she needed was to make this worse through her own ignorance; get Yulu to check she was doing it alright a few times, and then she'd feel confident enough to do it on her own.

"Help you out? Sure, that's not a problem, it's what we Healers are here for in the first place. I'll make sure to teach you enough that you'll get better at it then me and will be the envy of others. Knowing how to wrap a bandage, or wrap anything for that matter, is actually something important to know. I think it's a talent all non-healers should learn, in case there is ever a time someone is injured and a Healer cannot get to that location quickly. A person's survival would then depend on those around them, and even the lowest person with a bit of training can make a Weyr of difference."
Yulu was smearing an anti-bacterial on Layla's arm now, followed by a salve that would help keep the wound from drying out and would assist with the healing. Her hands were fast, sure in movement, and soon a while cloth was placed over the cut and Yulu started to wrap it up. Even though she knew she'd be showing Layla how to do this a few more times, it never hurt to explain it at least once through now.
"After putting the salves on, start wrapping the bandage a little bit above the cut. If you were to start right on the wound there is a chance that the bandages could slip and slide, causing aggravation of the injury and exposure to open air. It also helps to start further up so you don't make the bandage too tight and cut off circulation, because despite the want to keep blood from pouring out of the cut you at least need it to still be able to flow to all parts of the arm. See?"
Yulu started wrapping about a finger's length away from the tip of the cut, her hands careful as she started to move the bandage around. At first the bandage was a little loose, though she quickly moved it to fit snug around the girl's arm. It wasn't so tight that it pinched, but it fit good enough there was no chance of it sliding. She continued to wrap quickly, her eyes watching carefully and a thin hiss escaping her lips whenever she had to back up a bit to wrap a section a second time, though all in all it took her very little effort to get the wound covered. It was nicely done and all around clean, leaving Yulu to pin the bandage ends together to prevent it from unraveling.
"There you go. When you bathe tonight or tomorrow morning make sure to keep the bandage dry, either by keeping your arm out of the water or by wrapping it in something that keeps water out. When we clean your wound tomorrow we can wash your arm then, so try to stay dry. Also avoid doing anything strenuous for a little while, though I'm sure having a bandage will keep many from hassling you into chores too quickly."
Yulu rubbed her hands together to get any of the dried salve off, it flaking down like little bits of sand from her palms, and she smiled warmly at Layla as she thought of what to do next.
"It's pretty lucky we're both in the barracks, so come and see me tomorrow morning before chores and we'll change your wrap then. I've got some items in my room that we can use so I won't have to take anything from here, and that way we can work with no one being the wiser as to what's going on. In any case, you're good to go."

Layla nodded along as Yulu spoke, watching the process of bandaging carefully. It looked like it would be pretty awkward to do one handed, but either she'd get the hang of it, or Yulu would continue to help her with it. "Right," she nodded as the bandage was pinned up, "I think I've got all that... and thanks," she flashed Yulu a smile, "I'll come find you then... For now though I should probably head to bed, especially if I'm going to get up a bit earlier tomorrow to come and find you."
So saying, Layls got to her feet and gave her friend another smile. "Night Yulu, see you tomorrow." All in all, she considered as she turned to leave the healing wing, her evening had improved quite a lot. Ha, she didn't have to finish up with chopping that meat now either. Feeling much better about life than she had a few minutes ago, Layla walked onward towards the candidate dorms.
