"Well, being a mother means you have to be prepared for the kids to wake you up in the middle of the night because they're bored."

This was obviously something she had experienced quite a bit, given how this seemed to amuse her more than it did annoy the crap out of her. Ah ha ha! But either way, she'd just leave it at that. Though Amalthea's curiosity on the subject was..interesting at the very least.

"It sounds to me like you've been thinking about being a mother yourself."

..
....

At least she didn't beat around the bush?

"Well, of course," she murmured almost immediately, though she would likely have been turning red if possible, "Not seriously, I guess. Since it's been an actual possibility, I've been .. well, worried about other things." She hadn't really felt right worrying about normal things- or expecting them to happen- since she'd been placed into the low class.

"But others generally seem to like talking about their families," she added thoughtfully, and though she intended it as an excuse for continuing the conversation as they had, it had multiple meanings. She didn't know what else to say, feeling more and more awkward.

Oh goodness, she'd avoided that topic rather quickly, now hadn't she? It was somewhat depressing, from where Artemis was looking at it, bumping her head gently against the younger female's shoulder.

"It will work out when it works out." she mused, as though it would reassure the girl. Would it actually do as she hoped? She wasn't sure. But it had been at least worth the effort in her eyes.

"Children are hard to not talk about, so are significant others." this last thought caused the lioness to muse, pondering about what her own children, as well as Namir, were up to.

"I'll have to see what mine are up to before too long. Knowing Namir, he's telling them about cooties to scare them off of girls forever."

This caused the lioness to giggle at the notion.

"I imagine it won't work out that easily, however."

Amalthea felt guilty dodging that particular conversation but she had no idea what to say, especially to Artemis- though she was the most likely maternal figure, even if they didn't interact regularly. She pressed back when Artemis bumped her, shaking her head, "Mhmm."

She snickered at the mention of cooties.

"I don't know if Atlas fell for that when we were little and trying to torment him but last I heard he didn't have an eye for anybody in particular," she commented thoughtfully, wondering only half-seriously if she and her sisters had convinced him he didn't need a girl. He probably was enjoying some time by himself for now, at least. It wouldn't necessarily last.

Well, at least Artemis was nice enough to not press the subject any further than the younger lioness had thrown it dropped it. She could respect that desire to not worry about it.

"Well, it won't stop Namir from trying. As long as little girls don't take the boys from him for another year or so, he'd be happy. I don't imagine that they'll be held off for too long after they realize that girls can be pretty to them, though."

Oh goodness, it was quite the mental image, if she did say so herself.

"Though I'll admit I want them to stay little boys for a little while longer too. It seemed like my first litter was never going to grow up.

It made me feel quite young to be chasing after them. Unfortunately time went a touch faster than I expected."

Smiling and nodding along as Artemis spoke, Amalthea thought about what to say but she really didn't identify with much of this. She didn't have a mate or cubs, didn't exactly go out of her way to make it happen and didn't even know how to go about something like that anyway. But it proved her point from before. Artemis had something to say and seemed to be enjoying saying it. It certainly made the whole concept that much more attractive.

"What class are they in?" she asked, "Do they know what they want to do when they do get big? I know Nerit's son was having trouble after he had to pick something, he's big enough to work but he's still like a big cub." She smiled. Even when cubs did grow up they didn't always seem to just stop being childish. She certainly had had issues when she reached independence, but that was in part due to her placement. Nerit didn't seem to mind that Ulivuma was taking his time transitioning between dependence and independence, it seemed associated with the desire Artemis expressed for her boys to stay little.

If she was given a whole day to do nothing but talk of her family, she would have spent all of it talking just about one of the kids... most like Iah to start with, the poor kid. ONLY LEETLE BOY OF HIS LITTER. She'd leave it alone for the time being, or else Amalthea would never get to go home and just be trapped with the Huntress forever!

"Upper middle, like their older sisters and brother. If nothing else, it should hopefully allow the children to bond better when the boys get older. I don't think they spend too much time together at the moment.

It would have been nice if I'd had them all at once, though." Though the children hadn't been, so there was nothing she would hope about it that would make a difference.

"Yun has insinuated wanting to be a hunter like his father, but Shashi hasn't made any such suggestion yet.

He'll come around after he's thought about it for some time."

She nodded again. It would certainly have helped her and her siblings stay closer if they were all in the same class now, but they were kind of the opposite scenario. Started together and split up by the moon. And she couldn't really comment on younger or older siblings.

"That's sweet," she said, "I bet they'll be fabulous hunters with you two to help them."

"Unless Shashi does something else. But I'm sure if he does pave his own path, he'll do well. Yun is already quite the little hunter. He's been learning he can hide from his father quite efficiently if he's quiet and doesn't move." she chuckled, as though imagining her older son in hiding while Namir sought him out.

Oh her funny boys.

"But I trust they'll figure it out. If they can't, I'll be here to give them guidance.

It's the least I can do for them, is give them direction. I can't force them to do anything."

"Hide and seek is lots of fun, especially when they figure out not to move around," Amalthea spoke up, speaking from experience this time. She actually did play silly games with Rika and Andy sometimes. It might have been a more useful game for future hunters but it was good fun for everything.

And then suddenly, they arrived. At least, if the waterhole was where they had hoped to end up. Amalthea stopped when she reached the water's edge and looked at the reflected sky in the water.

"Hm."

Hm?

Artemis fell silent at Amalthea's side when they reached the water, sighing and taking a seat next to the young lioness and again nudging the girl's shoulder with a weak smile.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out for yourself in the long run. All I can offer you is my experience and guidance, but I believe you'll figure it out." she purred, before she looked away, also looking at the reflection of the sky in the water.

It was beautiful, really.

"...."

She glanced over at Artemis as she smiled at her, hesitating before smiling back and then following her gaze back to the water. It was something. And now her walk had been a little more productive than it might have been. Also distressing but she really needed to stop being so antisocial.

"It was nice talking to you, we should definitely chat more often," she said, looking back over at Artemis.

Artemis offered another smile before she rose to her feet, nuzzling the lioness briefly before taking a step away.

"I'm always here for you if you need me. However, I think you're right in taking some alone time for now." she mused, before turning to take her leave from the young slave, nodding after a moment of thought before continuing to move along.

"Until then." she bid over her shoulder, before she kept on walking.

Now she'd go and find her mate and sons to see just what they were up to.

"You don't have to-" Amalthea started in a murmur but she cur herself off. Artemis was going to leave anyway, and now she was kind of cutting herself off from the conversation. She was wherever she was going for the night and Artemis did have to get back to her family.

"Goodbye," she called after Artemis and then settled in by the water for a little while.

Fin.
