When Valentine heard the call that it was time to go to the Sands, he couldn't seem to get there fast enough. As he drew closer, he slowed his pace and smoothed his shirt. He had all the time in the world to do everything properly, so no need to seem harried. Briefly running his fingers through his hair, he dipped his head in greeting to the present leaders, offering them a bit of an excited smile before offering up his respect to Gold Kaveth. Once that was taken care of, the candidate shifted green gray eyes to the vibrantly colored eggs. He slowly rubbed his rough hands together as he looked from egg to egg.
Which egg to go to first? Hm. Taking a deep breath, Valentine approached one of the eggs that had tipped over onto their side. Reaching out he brushed his fingers along the shell of the Three Spots Egg, tipping his head slightly with a soft chuckle at the distinct feeling of amusement that he felt. "Heh. It's all good, isn't it?" He asked the egg softly, letting his palm rest against it, before rising to move onto the next one that drew his attention.
He decided that there would be no rhyme or reason to his meandering. Val paused in the middle of the clutch and stopped in front of the Blue Earth Egg and crouched down and ran his hand down its side. He didn't pick up any bad vibes or feelings from the egg, which was good. It seemed to not mind the bit of attention which made Valentine smile. Maybe the occupant was a go with the flow sort of dragonet. Well, everyone would certainly find out all in due time. Rising again, he wiped his cheek against his shoulder, puffing out a sigh from the heat from the Sands.
Val shifted his attention to the cluster of centered around the Queen egg. He strolled closer, wiping some sand off of his hands. Reaching out he placed one hand on the Orange Stripe Egg, a hard to read thing, maybe a bit discontent, and his other to rest on the the Spicy Red Egg and was quickly met with a feeling of impatience. He caressed the tops of the two eggs before standing, somewhat torn about the discontentment and impatience that he felt, pausing to gently pet the dappled New Grass Egg and laying his hand most respectfully on the Golden Stag Egg. Taking a step back and rubbing his hands together, he nodded to the Queen egg and the flanking eggs as well. "May you find who will bring out your best and fullest potential," he whispered to the grouping before resuming his roundabout meandering.
Coming to stand in front of the Pink Charcoal and the Streaked Sky eggs, Valentine grinned to himself. The way they were positioned reminded him of the sibling squabbles he and his sisters would occasionally get into. 'No! Stop touching me!' 'Go away! Leave me alone! This is my side! Go to yours!' 'You're mean! Stop it!' He gave a reflective sigh and and touched the pair. His eye brows rose slightly at the mixed feelings from the two of them. One, the Pink Charcoal egg, seemed to have such a pleasant aura to it, while the other, the Streaked Sky, seemingly to Val, contrasting to its smooth, nicely colored shell felt down right cantankerous. "Heh, what a pair. All the best..."
Moving to his feet, Valentine shifted his attention to the Grey Speckled Egg, another egg that had toppled over onto its side. Strolling over to the egg, angling his head to look at it as if it were right side up. He trailed his fingers along its shell from top to bottom. He found it rather nice. It looked like a stone, and if his time apprenticing the Excavator subcraft of Mining Craft didn't cause him to appreciate stone he didn't know what did. The candidate blinked and fought back a yawn as he gave the egg another stroke. "As you were then..." Val muttered to the egg with a bit of a yawn, unable to fight it off any longer.

Cass all but ran into the hatching grounds, though she brought herself to a stop by the time she came to the entrance, her impressive chest heaving with the exercise. She took a moment to calm her racing heart, which didn't beat so fast only from her sprint from the kitchens, but also from excitement. It was time to touch the eggs! Her heart still hammering in her chest like an over eager miner, she stepped onto the sands, suddenly happy she had remembered to put on her boots this morning, and not one of her lighter pairs of shoes that she often wore around the Weyr. As it was, the heat radiated through the thick soles of her shoes, but kept it from being too uncomfortable, luckily. She looked around curiously, having never been on the sands themselves before, an excited smile lighting her face, though it was directed at no one in particular, at least until she turned towards the queen and the Weyrleaders. Of course! She had to say something to them, didn't she? "My congratulations on such a lovely clutch." She said with a steadiness of voice that pleased her. At least she didn't sound too nervous. She bowed neatly to the golden queen, Kaveth, and then to her rider, and the Weyrleader. She smiled brightly at them, dark eyes alight with excitement, and then turned towards the clutch itself, eager to get a closer look. In looking, though, she also spotted Layla, whom she had just met yesterday. Knowing she must be at least as nervous as Cass herself was (though she was doing quite a good job of hiding it if she did say so herself, thank you) then no doubt she wouldn't object to a little company. Cass moved across the sands now, and joined the girl by the three spotted egg, and crouched down next to her, neatly tucking her full skirt around her so as not to afford anyone any improper glimpses of her under things. "Layla, I'm so glad you're here!" Cass said with a bright grin "it's good to see someone I recognize, I feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest with all this excitement!" she said in a quiet voice as she turned her eyes from the other girl, and to the eggs before them. The dark egg directly before her had three little spots on it, and lay on its side in the sand. Perhaps it was tired, she thought, amused. Cass reached out one of her small hands and lay it on the surface of the egg, enjoying the odd texture of it. She got a sense of...amusement, when she touched it, and this made her smile. What could amuse a dragonet that had yet to hatch? Curious indeed, but she quite liked it. "Layla, feel this egg!" she said, turning back to the girl and taking her hand from it herself and motioning for the other girl to touch it. "What do you feel?" she asked, wondering if Layla would have the same sensation.

Oh dear. Not that she wasn't pleased to see Cass - she was - but she was not comfortable with chattering on the sands, discussing the eggs in front of their mother. It felt improper to her, disrespectful, she was sure you weren't supposed to stop to have conversations! She regarded the other weyrbrat with wide eyes for a moment before flashing her a nervous smile and nodding, hoping she wouldn't mind not actually being replied to. She didn't want to get in trouble for stopping to gossip, but equally she didn't want to hurt Cass' feelings, she had felt that they might become friends after their excited chatter the day before.
Still, she would be holding things up if she worried about this any longer, and here was the spotted purple egg waiting to be touched. Tipped on one side, off center, off balance. Poor thing. That was how she felt, unsure of the world she had thrust herself into... Were you allowed to speak on the sands? She couldn't remember, her mind was a total blank. Forget it. Don't worry. Just touch the egg.
Letting out a slow breath, Layla stooped to lay a hand on the shell. She had been wrong, she realized with a slight smile. It was off center, yes, but not at all off balance. It wasn't worried, or nervous about its situation at all in fact it seemed... it seemed to find something funny. Her? Its clutchmates? The prospect of life in general? Whatever it was that pleased this egg, another green she thought, it wasn't going to rampage around hurting people if this feeling really did reflect what it would be like when it hatched.
Straightening up, she shot Cass another smile and a slight nod, hoping that she was communicating that they'd talk later. For now, she had other eggs to touch! Glancing over her shoulder, she spotted Yulu still by the streaked sky and the pink charcoal eggs. It was tempting to wait around for her, but that was certainly something they'd been warned about. Don't rush, but don't dilly dally either. With this in mind Layla moved on, towards the blue earth egg.

Cass rolled her eyes slightly at the other girl's reluctance to talk, but gave her a smile to show she wasn't offended. She was pretty sure talking wasn't disallowed while touching eggs, then again, she wasn't really here to gossip either. Layla obviously just wasn't as forward as Cass was. That could be a good thing though. The petite young woman gave the spotted egg one last fond pat and then moved along to another egg, the spicy red one. She placed one of her small hands on this larger egg and was overcome by a sense of uncertainty that made her blink. How very odd. It seemed unsure about the other eggs. Maybe it was a particularly snobby bronze? Wouldn't be that surprising she supposed with a small, bemused smile as she stroked the egg slightly. Then again, it could be a very insecure dragon too. Whatever the case, we're all eagerly awaiting you, little one. She thought mentally in her usually cheerful tone. She turned towards the largest egg then, obviously the gold. Even before she laid a hand on it, she was overcome by a sense of calm, which was amplified when she placed both hands on it. This queen would be very level headed, if this aura it was giving off was anything to go by. No doubt it would be a little queen that Kaveth and all the dragons could be proud of! Her attention was soon captured by the next egg, though, with a stripe running down it, and when she laid hands on it, this one, she could tell, was quite unhappy, making her raise both of her eyebrows as she crouched beside it. She wondered what made it so unhappy? Did it not like the queen egg? Or the other eggs? Maybe it was just grumpy because it had got stuck in an uncomfortable position inside of its egg...being in such a tight, enclosed place was sure to make anyone annoyed.

Yulu looked up at the sound of voices on the sands, frowning as usual as she glanced over to see who had been speaking. She settled on Cass - oh boy, good luck there, and she shook her head as the girl seemed heavily content to just ramble on to Layla. For her being a Weyrbrat Yulu found it off that Cass didn't know the basic rules of being out on the sands, of the traditional silence they all must have, and she found herself actually moving towards where Layla was.
She wasn't sure why she did it, perhaps it was to prevent Cass from trying something again, though all she knew it that Cass probably wouldn't try speaking again with Yulu around. There was bad air between them, at least on Yulu's side. She was the type to hold a small grudge lately and, as she had told L'pin that day, Yulu was not above petty acts of revenge.
As she finally approached Layla Yulu played it off with a smile of her own, though the glance she shot after Cass probably gave away her original intentions. She moved and set her hand on the same egg, the Blue Earth egg, and she tried to focus on the feeling she got instead of letting her mind press about anything else.
It was interesting to find that this egg, unlike the other she had just touched, was more welcoming to her fingertips. There was an odd sense of acceptance towards her hands and no traces of hositility, but almost rather the opposite. It was like this egg enjoyed being fawned over beneath her hands, that being the sensation Yulu felt most, and she shook her head as her brain translated that this would probably be a very needy dragon, in both terms of wants and doing. That wasn't something Yulu found herself wanting to do in the future.

Oh good! Yulu had caught up! Layla flashed her a smile, and moved along beside her to the blue earth egg. She let Yulu go first, she was in no huge hurry, but when her friend moved back she reached out eagerly to see what this one was like... It seemed happy to see her - see being figuritive - and as she touched it she thought it moved slightly... This one she had guessed at brown for from the crack in the wall, but now she wasn't so sure. Blue, she thought, she would guess at blue for this one.
Almost reluctanly, Layla removed her hand from the shell; she had liked the feeling of acceptance it had given out. Still, there were more eggs to touch yet, and she couldn't hold things up. Glancing back, she gave Cass another smile before looking back at Yulu: time to move on! Hoping her epxression had communicated this, she moved on towards the spicy red egg.

Tofir moved on to the purple egg on its side. Speaking to Layla before, he'd been reminded that the queen would re-position her eggs. Why would she deliberately move an egg so that it lay on its side? There was another egg on the far side of the clutch that was lying on its side. Maybe the eggs were somehow deformed, and trying to set them on their end was ineffective. Did dragons lay deformed eggs? Interesting. He supposed trying to roll it over and get a look would be completely forbidden.
Enough speculation. He lay his palm flat against the Three Spots Egg and felt...nothing. Except a surety that he wasn't likely to have much success rolling it over to check for being misshapen. The egg, for all that it was small, seemed quite immobile. Interesting. He made a note of it and moved on to the next nearest egg, the Spicy Red Egg. He didn't make much of its slight tilt. He'd just come from touching an egg that was completely on its side. One that was marginally off kilter hardly registered. He put both palms on this larger egg. He had a hard time putting faith in the idea that an egg's position had anything to do with its occupant. He just wasn't sure what to make of it. He noted that and moved on.

Well. She hadn't been eaten or assaulted, which was a good thing, so Jadamirei moved forward. She would start at the Streaked Sky Egg. She politely waited until the Candidate in front of her had removed his hands before reaching out to gently stroke the blue shell. And recoiled, alarmed by the wave of hostility. Apparently this one didn't like people much. Or contact, one of the two. She reached out, patted it one more time just to be sure, sheaking her head at the distaste dripping from the shell.
So instead Jada moved to the Pink Charcoal Egg, reaching out and laying a firmer hand on it. Pleasant enough. A tinge of... longing? Perhaps, but who was she to think she could understand the emotions of a baby dragon. They were said to be almost as intelligent from Hatching as a human child. But it wasn't until after Impression that they were safe. Still, she kept her hands on the pink egg and tried to send the baby within gentle encouragement.
Finally she lifted her hands back up and glanced over the sands. Candidates were everywhere, and Jadamirei planned to save the gold egg for the last. So where should she go? There was one egg left off by itself... she should go there first. So the Grey Speckled Egg it would be! Moving over to the small egg, she slowly reached her hands out. Nothing. Cold Apathy. Nothing hostile about it, just a level of indifference that was imposing. Pulling herself up, she moved towards the main clutch.

Moving off from the Pink Charcoal Egg, Marcillus shifted to the speckled grey egg and blinked at the sheer amount of... laziness? No... that wasn't it. It seemed kind of aloof to her, as if it would take its right good time, thanks. She had to suppress the yawn when it threatened to make her pause and she shook her head, "You're a tricky one, aren't you?" She murmured, patting it's smooth surface.
That one, she decided, she would be interested to see. The lessons and other Candidates had said the smaller eggs would be blues or greens... so that meant this independant, possibly lazy, dragonet would probably turn out to be a green or blue. Both of which were pretty colours but... she'd gotten the distinct impression that women riding blues, and even greens, was some kind of social faux pas. It was hard to be sure though, because it was a subject people seemed to avoid - almost as if you pretended it wasn't there, it didn't have to exist.
With her head full of the potential politicking of female riders, she moved on to the next egg. There were lots of people now and she tried to hurry, slipping in between the gaps as other Candidates moved around. She glanced up when someone nearby spoke and frowned - was that allowed? Should they be speaking? She didn't think they were...
Thus, she bit her lip as she bent to touch the Blue Earth egg and laughed softly at the relatively pleasant impression it gave her. It liked attention, that was clear, as a surge of something akin to greeting passed through her. It didn't seem hostile, thankfully, only interested in the attention and it made Marcillus feel guilty when the tide of Candidates began to build around her and she had to move away. There's plenty of attention for you, little one! I'm sorry!
She'd left the cluster of eggs nearest the big gold one for last and approached them with caution. First she touched the Spicy Red Egg and shook her head, finding a strong sense of impatience that made her shy away. That wasn't a feeling she liked... not at all. It was too familiar and conjured unpleasant memories so it wasn't too surprising she shifted on to the Golden Stag Egg.
When she touch the queen egg, she smiled immediately and closed her eyes, the sense of calm washing through her, soothing as cool water. Whatever else the dragon within was, Marcillus knew it was a calm creature... the sort you could rely on. She grinned as she shifted away, not wanting to insult or worry the mother into any frightening behaviour.
Calmed down once more, she inhaled deeply and moved on to the final two eggs.
The Orange Stripe egg made her shake her head, it seemed so upset! Not in the throw-a-fit sort of way but in the get-out-of-my-face manner that made her purse her lips and back off as well. That was a strong personality and she found she preferred the impatience of the other egg to the sense of being totally unimpressed even if that ire seemed to be peripheral to her contact.
She sighed. Maybe the New Grass Egg would be better?
Maricillus tilted her head at the complex aura this last egg carried and pondered it for a moment. If it was seeking comfort - as she definitely got that impression - she could not blame the little egg. Someone to rely on was something she sorely lacked and to have a best friend like that... well, you couldn't blame the egg for that. Or, perhaps, she was imagining that... it was hard to tell, with the undercurrent of more deliberate intentions she felt.
"You're a complex one, little egg. I wonder what your story is..." She smiled as she rose once more, giving one last pat to the green egg and it's companion gold egg before she stepped back and looked around for approving looks. Hopefully she hadn't screwed up too badly...

Tofir looked around and decided he had better pick up the pace. If he wanted to be able to observe others' reactions, he'd have to finish up himself. That way he could find a nice bit of wall to hold up and take notes. He finished reading and memorizing his notes on the mottled egg and moved on to another egg with a mottled shell, though this one in bright shades of blue and green. He liked the colors, but they still didn't strike him as being as clean as the blue and white egg he'd touched earlier. He noted which egg he was touching, and then lay one hand on the side of the Blue Earth Egg, leaving it to trail along the side of the egg as he made his way around it to the other half of the clutch. For a moment he could have sworn he felt the egg move, but that was quite impossible: the only way that could happen would be if the eggshell hadn't hardened, and if that were the case he wouldn't be allowed to touch it. Moving around it brought him close to the blue and white egg once more, but he didn't touch it again. That would create inconsistencies and force him to touch all the eggs over again.
The next egg he came to was the Grey Speckled Egg. Another egg on its side, he noted after reading and erasing his notes on the last egg he'd touched. Maybe that meant the dragon inside was fat, and gravity weighed so heavily on it, even in the egg, that it couldn't stay upright. Or maybe it wasn't fat, but depressed, and its sheer misery was weighing it down, he thought, smirking at the idea. When he finally touched it his touch was brief and dismissive. He had to cover a yawn with the back of the hand holding his slate. He wrote down that the egg seemed lackluster and a few other notes, and then continued on his merry way.

Tarusen was neither the first nor the last to enter the sands. This was not his first touching and if the last had been spectacularly disappointing, well, that said nothing of this one. This time there were a reasonable number of eggs on the sands, one of which promised a queen. And what was a queen with out her attendant bronzes? Yes, this was promising. It would go well.
While some candidates rushed to the sands and others held back, Tarusen kept his pace steady. He gave the queen his very best bow and nodded respectfully to the new Weyrwoman. For his part, Tarusen liked her, cold or no. But then, Tarusen liked power, period. And right now, she had it. It would pay to be on her good side.
He knew the other candidates on sight, some from classes, some from childhood, but this was a somber event. Though he smiled at anyone who glanced in his direction, he made no attempt to socialize. Those who were speaking got a brief, disapproving look, but no more. He wasn't worried. A girl who blabbed on while on the sands would never call a queen. She wasn't worth the effort of disdain.
It was the Golden Stag Egg that he approached first. There was, just for a breath, a flutter of nervousness as he placed his hand on the shell. But lay it there he did, with respect. This queen, this queen may very well be the dragon of a future Weyrwoman. And he wanted that dragon positively inclined toward himself and the bronze he would be riding.

Zhierd had tried to hurry when he had heard about the touching, but his chores had kept him just a little longer than he had expected. Well, he was here now and there were eggs to be touched. Slowly he looked around trying to see if he recognized anyone. Oh! Wasn't that Folen? He was about to run over and say hi but caught himself. Right now wasn't the time for socializing, it was a time for touching. There would be plenty of time for him to catch up with Folen later.
Carefully Zhierd made his way towards the eggs where everyone else was. Slowly Zhierd approached the Golden Stag Egg first. As he layed his hand upon the egg he started to feel a bit more calm. See? He could do this. After all, it was just the touching, the eggs hadn't started hatching yet. He gave the golden egg a smile and then moved on to the Orange Stripe Egg that sat next to it. This egg was smaller then the golden egg and was leaning away from the larger egg. He wondered if it was perhaps jealous of the size difference? Then again who really knew. Zhierd slowly placed his hand on the egg and some of the calm he had been feeling left him. Hmm, this egg didn't seem very happy.
The boy quickly moved onto the New Grass Egg before he upset the Orange Stripe Egg even more. As he reached the egg he was once again close to the golden egg and felt calmer once more. Once more Zhierd placed his hand upon the new grass egg. The egg seemed to be rather happy being near the Queen egg. Was it sharing the spotlight? Or looking for a friend? He supposed time would tell.
The boy removed his hand from the egg's surface and made his way over to the Spicy Red Egg As he placed his hand upon the egg, he felt a feeling of impatience. Zhierd was still surprised at the feelings you could get from the eggs at a touching, though this definitely wasn't his first. Before the egg grew even more impatient, he quickly moved on.
Upon reaching the middle, he came to stand next to the Blue Earth Egg. Zhierd studied the egg for a few moments before placing his hand upon it. What was inside, he wondered. Perhaps a blue? Or maybe a green? As his hand made contact with the shell the egg seemed to wiggle a little. He wondered if that was good or bad, oh he hoped it was good. Had he upset the egg? Once more he removed his hand and stepped away from the egg.
Zhierd was halfway through the eggs now and had four more to go. Looking over he spotted the Three Spots Egg. The boy made his way over to the purple egg and placed his hand down once more. He wondered why it had toppled over? Well, it definitely looked to large to move and he was sure he wouldn't have been the first to try. As he gently moved his fingers over the egg he felt a sense of amusement. Was the egg laughing at him? The thought brought a smile to his face. A little reluctantly the boy removed his hand, there were still three more eggs to touch.
The boy quickly made his way over to the Pink Charcoal Egg and the Streaked Sky Egg. Was the sky egg trying to avoid the pink egg? Zhierd let out a little chuckle at the thought. As soon as Zhierd placed his hand upon the pink charcoal egg he immediately felt a pleasant sensation, a nice warming feeling. He really didn't want to let go, but alas, there were two more eggs left to touch. He gently patted the pink egg then placed his hand on the sky egg and immediately took his hand off again. It was quite obvious that the egg did NOT want to be touched and so he respected that wish.
The last egg for him to touch lay by itself. The boy laid his hand gently upon the Grey Speckled egg and yawned a little. How long had he been touching the eggs? It hadn't seemed that long, but maybe it was just the heat. The boy gave the egg a little pat and made his way to the edge of the sands to watch the rest of the touching.

Another Touching. Her second. And somehow, this time, Allia wasn't quite as excited as she had been at the last, despite the fact that there was much more of a reason to be excited. This was a real clutch, gold egg and all, and no one was going to be disapproving of her or any other girl on the Sands - well, as long as none of them Impressed anything other than the gold, but still, it was an improvement. It would also mean more girls actually on the Sands - and to stand behind. You know, just in case there was another angry green waiting inside one of the eggs.
While she was hardly a coward under most circumstances, the young candidate just couldn't get the images from the last Hatching out of her mind...and since it had been her first, it had left an especially bad impression, so to speak. Standing in the back wouldn't make her a coward, she reasoned; she was just being cautious. A coward would have gone home. Not that she hadn't considered it, however briefly, but she'd soon regained a level head and decided against what would essentially be running away.
Besides, could she really be happy going back a 'normal' life now? Not really. Not until she could at least say she'd tried her best. And that meant another Touching, another Hatching, however many times she had to or until her times ran out.
...or she got mauled and died, but she was going to Not Think about that. Worrying wouldn't get her anywhere or change anything; sucking it up and being calm would. So when it was her turn, Allia paid her respects and got down to the business of touching eggs.
She did so gently and quietly, visiting each egg in turn and trying not to listen to the other candidates who chose to speak to the eggs. It felt a little like eavesdropping. For her part, she said nothing - just touched, felt, considered, and moved on until she'd finished.

Verianne was slow, somber as she bowed to the Queen dragon and slipped towards the eggs.
The Grey Speckled Egg was first for her, and she smiled as she relaxed slightly. So tired, it almost struck her as laid back. Hopefully, the dragonet within was not just lazy. That would be no good, considering whatever lay within was a fighting dragon.
She moved over to the Streaked Sky Egg next, running her hands over the rough outer shell. It was pretty enough, and the color was gorgeous. Even though it sent forth a feeling of distaste, it didn't deter her. And the feeling of avoidance of the other egg made her smile, lean in closer to it.
Next, naturally, the Pink Charcoal Egg was approached. This one was too friendly. Too involved. If the dragonet within chose her, what if it made her be sociable? She wrinkled up her nose. Well, she guessed she wouldn't mind too much. The dragonet could be the social one, and she could sit back and sketch. Or do what all weyrlings supposedly did and oil the heck out of it.
Letting go of the egg, she moved for the main group. Hello, Three Spots Egg. Nice to meet you. Small, rough hands stroked the deeply colored shell. And her face broke into a smile. It was a feeling of amusement, that seemed to transfer to her. But what was it amused by? And why was it laying on its side like that? She tsk'd, very lightly tapping the egg with her fingertips. Would this one be a jokester, or was it just unlucky enough to keep falling onto its side? Hopefully it would have a better sense of balance when hatched!
Next was the Spicy Red Egg. And certainly, spicy it seemed to be! Nothing vicious in the sensation she got as she touched it, just impatience. still, it didn't feel right for her, so she removed her hand quickly. She wouldn't touch the Queen egg yet; save the best for last, wasn't it?
Blue Earth Egg it would be. She reached out, fingers stroking along the area where the blue met the green. Earth and Water. As she touched it, she thought she felt a kicking inside, but nothing more. Like a thumping, a pulse or a heartbeat. And what might this one be? It took her a moment to let go of it, reluctantly.
On to the New Grass Egg. Again, she didn't get too much of a sensation from it. It was almost eager, too eager. It startled her a bit. Spotlight... was nice enough, she supposed. Or maybe (and this thought perked her up) it was an informer for its future Queen, whispering in her ear the things it knew. The thought almost made her giggle, but she caught herself in time. This was her second day at the Weyr, and she didn't want to get kicked out for screwing up already.
And then the Orange Stripe Egg. It felt unhappy, an impression that other Candidates around her seemed to catch as well. Not that it was something bad... still, she left its side quickly to stare at the goal of her journey here.
And she continued to watch it, gnawing uncertainly on her lower lip.

Feeling that he'd spent enough time making friends with the queen egg, Tarusen removed his hand and considered which to touch next. He settled on the Orange Stripe egg, mostly because it was near the queen, even if it was leaning away as if trying to escape.
Huh. Whatever was beneath that shell seemed less than happy with the current situation. Though Tarusen couldn't even begin to infer why, he could feel the emotion fizzing up in him as he touched it, an irritation that was impossible to ignore. If it were a smaller egg, he might have moved on. But this one was large enough to contain a very small bronze and he wasn't going to let a little anger deter him. He kept his hand settled firmly on the shell for at least half a minute, refusing to let the anger chase him off. Only then did he move on to the next egg.
He approached the Spicy Red Egg next, another promisingly large egg settled close to the future queen. This one, too, did not seem friendly. But it was impatience now, not anger. The urge to allow his fingers to tap out a similarly impatient beat was strong but not so strong that he obeyed it. As before, he did not allow the feeling to rush him, as the apparent largest egg in the clutch he remained at its side for longer than he had the previous two.
Onward, then, to the New Grass Egg. If there was one thing Tarusen had learned in his careful study of people and their relationships, it was that, to get close to a girl, you got close to her friends. And no egg was seated closer to the queen egg than this one. Sure, it was a small thing, not a dragon he planned to impress, but it was certainly a dragon he was perfectly happy to befriend. Doing his best to project casual friendliness, he allow himself to stroke the shell a few times before moving on to the next of the smaller, less promising eggs.
