"Thats all it really comes down too, I guess." she said with a smile. Cass looked around the kitchen for a moment before hopping up off of her stool and going over to one of the small hearths. After washing her hands she filled two mugs with Klah and returned to her workspace.
Offering one mug to Layla, the blond smiled and took a sip from her own. "One cup and then back to work!" she said with a cheerful wink to the other girl.
Humming quietly she started collecting some of the smaller ingredients she would need for her next batch of bread. That done, she sat down neatly on the stool she had requisitioned earlier and went back to sipping her Klah.
"Do you know any dragonriders?" Cass asked Layla curiously, turning to look at the girl. She had spoken of talking to other riders about how they impressed, so perhaps she knew a few? Cass was not on close terms with any riders, so she had never ridden a dragon, let alone gone between. She had heard so many accounts of what it was like in that dark void, and surprisingly enough, found herself curious to experience it herself. Was it really as cold as everyone said it was? It must be, since everyone had to bundle up when they went a-dragonback. Could you really not feel anything at all? That seemed, to Cass, to be the most frightening part of going between. Still, though, if she were between on her own dragon, with that unbreakable link between them...she didn't think she would be afraid.

Layla accepted the hot drink with a smile, blowing on it before taking a very cautious sip. Good, it was hot but it wasn't going to scald her; she took a deeper drink, and gave a sigh of appreciation. "I can't say I really do know any riders, no." Layla gave a regretful smile and shook her head. "I mean, there's one or two who I've spoken to a couple of times when I was fetching things for them or whatever but I don't know any well enough to just call them by their names, you know? It would be nice to, though. I bet they could tell you all sorts of interesting things about dragons that we're not taught because it's not seen as relevant or whatever."

The next best thing to Impressing yourself, being close to a rider, and their dragon too. Maybe if you were lucky you'd get to help with bathing sometimes, or even get taken for a flight... Flight. The idea resounded around in her head, she dreamed of it... Of course she often dreamed of flying and then falling too, but if she was ever a rider she would make sure she made very sturdy straps, and if not she would carefully check the harness of any dragon she was offered a ride on.

"Yeah, I don't really know any riders either." she said with a regretful sigh "I just don't cross paths with them very much, since I'm down here in the lower caverns most of the day." The blond made a face and then took another sip of her drink.
"Too bad though, if you get friendly with a rider surely they'd let you help out bathing their dragon or something..." she said wistfully "Who knows though! Maybe one day we'll be the dragonriders that young weyrbrats will dream of making friend with!" she laughed at the idea of eager young people all vying for her attention. She had to admit, it certainly did appeal to her vanity, even if all they really wanted was a chance to be near to a dragon, or get a free ride. Attention was attention, and she did so love to bask in it.
"Ah well, we shall see." she mused as she added some sweetener to her Klah and then took another sip.

"Yea... We'll see." Layla swirled her klah and sighed, dreaming vaguely of being a rider surrounded by young weyrbrats who she'd tell all about her dragon. She'd let them help wash it so long as it didn't mind, and if she had the time she'd take people to fly around, maybe even give them rides to other places around Pern. Well, a girl could dream. If she Impressed a fighting dragon she would be an object of scorn by and large, very few would want to know her and Hers. If she was a gold rider, she would probably be told it wasn't proper, and not be able to bring herself to break with tradition. Still, a girl could dream.

"I hope we see soon," she went on eventually with a rueful smile. "The sooner it all happens, the less time I have to get nervous... I have to admit I don't really like the atmosphere that's building in the dorms. Competitive, you know? So many girls desperate to Impress, especially to Impress the queen... I just wish people didn't get so... so... bitchy. Whatever's going to happen is going to happen, there's no point insisting the gold will choose you because... because what you say doesn't affect whether or not she will. Does that make sense?" There would be a lot of jealousy directed at whoever Impressed the queen. If it turned out to be her, Layla had no idea how she would deal with such malice.

"Yeah, I'd picked up on that too." Cass said with a grimace. There had been some dirty looks thrown about the barracks lately, and things were starting to get a little ugly on occasion. Though she was normally the kind of person who liked to be the center of attention, she didn't sink so low as to start pointless arguments with other girls about who would impress the queen to get there. That was all negative attention anyways, and who needed that many people glaring daggers at their back every time they walked by? Not her, that was for certain. She would usually try and smooth things over, though that didn't always work. Girls would be girls, and when it came to competition for a coveted prize, girls were downright vicious.
"Ah well, just try and bear out the brunt of the storm, it'll all pass soon enough, and there will be no point being upset about who the queen chooses." she said with a shrug. Even the densest girls knew that the dragon made the choice, not the girl. Nothing could influence that "Hatching can't come soon enough though, I'm sick of all the screaming." she said, making a bitter face and waving her hand in annoyance. It made it awfully hard to sleep sometimes.

"Yea... Me too." The shouting, the snipping, the worrying, the wondering... Sometimes it was nearly too much to take, but she couldn't back out now, not when she could be so very close to finding her dragon. A few more sevendays, she could handle it. It wasn't as if she was the target for much of the nastiness anyway; she kept out of the way, and generally didn't look like a threat to anyone. She just needed to avoid becoming a target until the eggs hatched, and then it would all be done with.

"Guess I should get back to work," Layla muttered after a few silent moments, finishing off her klah and collecting supplies for her next batch of bread. "Time'll pass quicker if we're busy, right?" Offering a smile to Cass, she set to work once more. Just think about the bread, no point worrying about dragons any longer... Like that would stop her. Sighing slightly Layla began to mix up the ingredients once more. The hatching couldn't come soon enough.

Cass drained the last of her Klah from her cup and nodded in agreement "The bread calls!" she said and giggled a bit as she went to pull her bread from the oven, just in time. After she placed them out on the cooling rack, she went back to her station and set to work on some herb rolls at the request of the head baker. They would go wonderful with the soup at dinner, she figured. Humming cheerfully to herself, she eagerly set to work.
