Kala rolled with Pembroke, giggling and growling and nipping at his paws. Her brothers wouldn't wrestle with her like this! They would wrestle together, but she thought her mother wouldn't approve of wrestling. Frankly, she hadn't been interested in it as a baby. Now.. Quickly overpowered by the boy, she fell onto her side laughing, trying to get back up to scurry away for some chase. She didn't understand the concept of winning or losing. She was just having fun.

Pembroke struggled to keep Kala pinned down but she eventually slipped through his grasp. He quickly rolled over to end up back on all fours. Without hesitation he set off after her. His laughter prevented him from running in a coordinated fashion. He stumbled all over the place, having trouble keeping in a straight line. He tripped over rocks, tree roots, his own feet and thin air, but he managed to keep pace right behind her. He watched her white tipped tail flip around in front of him, it made him laugh even harder when he got close enough for it to tickle his nose.

Kala shrieked happily as the chase started, peeking back every once in a while but mainly focusing on running properly. She dodged, jumped, and dove, activities that soon wore on her body, unused to the exertion. She shrieked again when she felt the hairs on her tail tickle, jumping up onto a rock for an escape. She was going fast though and slid right off the other side with a thump. She felt an ache in her leg from the impact, but she was also feeling alive. Alive! A grin was on her face as her eyes winced, but she stood, checking where Pembroke was. He probably had shot right past her.

Pembroke watched as Kala slipped over the top of the rock. He laughed hysterically, forgetting where he was going, skidding and slamming straight into the rock himself. He whined as he bumped his head rather hard on the rock. He gathered himself together, wondering where Kala had gone. Realising she had fallen off around the other side he started to slink around the rock. He used the art of stealth in hopes she wouldn't hear him. He suppressed his giggles as he came round the other side of the rock where he thought she was hiding. He pounced without looking intending to jump right on top of her.

Kala poked her head over the path, looking one way, then the other. Had Pembroke over-shot her by that much? She flipped her ears back, about the go down the path when something landed on her tail. She let out a terrified yelp, calling Pembroke's name, and, muchly reminiscent of the famed fainting goats, flopped onto her side with her legs stiff, gasping from the shock. She still had to get used to being away from her family... Her limbs went lip after a second and she kept laying there, gasping and feeling a doomed fate tied to whatever was on her tail. She was sure she could feel sharp teeth on her skin, ready to tear, and sense a horrendously huge mouth gapping, ready to swallow her whole. She was a goner!

Pembroke tugged on Kala's tail a little, just to mess with her. He tried a half-convincing growl to scare her even more but was overcome with giggles. He rounded into view and got a look at Kala's face. In an instant he was reduced to a giggle-fit.
"This...this...was your face!"
He mockingly imitated Kala's wide-mouthed expression, his mouth gaping and his eyes going cross-eyed. He rolled over as more laughter consumed him. As he started to calm down, he wondered at how this fox could be so scared of everything. He turned to her in a more serious, still slightly mocking way.
"You gotta stop being so scared of everything. You gotta be tough or you'll never survive. You gotta be strong, like me!"
He sat up proudly puffing out his chest, illustrating his tough-ness. He wasn't afraid of anything. He was strong. He was tough. He was brave.

Kala remained limp as her tail was tugged on, too frightened to move, only able to squeeze her eyes shut. Her eyes popped back open at the boy's voice, just in time to see the face he was making. She flipped onto her belly, eyes suddenly burning in both embarrassment and anger. "I'm not scared of everything." She muttered softly. "You snuck up on me when I thought you were somewhere else." Her young mind thought this was logical. If she had thought Pembroke was elsewhere, what was she supposed to think when something pounced her tail? "I- I don't wanna be like you."

Pembroke did not understand a word of what Kala said. Even though all the words he understood quite plainly, it made no sense to him.
She seemed to be afraid of everything. Her logic made no sense. And how could she not want to be like him?
For a moment he was dumbfounded, unsure of how to respond. He cocked his head to the side as he searched for words.
"Well...why not? You can't live your life being afraid of everything."
He moved a bit closer to her.
"But you know, if you are ever afraid of anything, you've got me. I'm brave and strong. I'm not afraid of anything. And we're..." he paused thinking for a moment before nodding his head. "We're friends now. Yep, we are. So I'll protect you."
He smiled rather pleased with himself. He hoped this would make Kala feel a little better and less scared of stuff. How was she going to have any fun if she went around frightened all the time? That's where Pem came in. He'd make her un-frightened.

"I'm not afraid of everything." Kala grumbled softly again, ears flipped back. She kept still as Pembroke stepped closer, only eyes slipping up to peek at the boy. They were... friends? He would... protect her? She had mixed feelings about this. She was thoroughly pleased to hear she had a friend now who seemed willing to protect her, but... She should be able to watch for herself, shouldn't she? Kala thought about her mother. "You... you'd do that?" She asked, her tail giving a small wag.

Pembroke sat down right in front of Kala. He nodded and a big smile crossed his face. This close to the young female he thought he would feel uncomfortable. He tested this theory by edging slightly closer yet still nothing. He felt completely at ease. There was no sense of fear, no sense of foreboding, no sense of embarrassment. His smile grew even larger, which would have seemed impossible but somehow he managed.
"Of course. That's what...friends....are for."
He put special emphasis on the 'friends' part. He wanted her to understand that he meant what he said. He would be strong and brave and protect her from anything. He wouldn't ever leave....not like his father, he could never abandon her.
His expression became more serious.
"I won't ever leave you, Kala. Not like my father....."
He trailed off looking at the ground with disdain. He screwed up his nose like a bad smell had wafted past it. Without noticing he pawed at his injured ear, sadly musing on things past.

Kala nibbled her lip a little before smiling as well. She... had a friend! Finally, she got out of her little hunkering crouch, sitting up and flicking her tail more. He seemed so certain... When Pemmy brought up his father, she lowered her eyes. "My daddy left me, too." She said softly. "I don't know anything about him except that he had dark fur." She looked at her own fur, dark like the absent father's. She looked up, blinking at her new friend. "I won't leave you either, Pemmy!" She exclaimed, crossing the rest of the space between the two and pressing her head against the boy's chest.

All at once Pembroke felt a rush of strange and varied emotions. He snapped quickly out of his musing as Kala came towards him, a smile even tickled his mouth. Her excitement filtered over to him and he sucked it up like a vacuum. Even his tail was flicking about now too. But as Kala spoke of her father, his heart sank. Yet at the same time he felt a sort of sad comfort that she had been through the same as he had. They both felt that same way about their absent fathers.
He looked down at his own fur. He looked nothing like his father. His father was white...he thought...or grey....his memory was foggy as he was so young when it all happened. The only thing he truly remembered of his father was the markings they shared and the injured ear her had passed onto Pem.
Pem's imaginings of his father were thankfully interrupted by Kala doing something awfully strange and completely unexpected. She nestled into his chest and Pem almost took a step back. He stopped himself when he realised she too was looking for the comfort he felt from her. She seemed rather distraught and he almost regretted bringing up his father at all. He had not meant to stir up her own bad feelings for her father.
"I...I'm sorry for bringing this up Kala. I know its painful..."
A dark look crossed his face and he nestled his head on top of hers bringing the two closer together.
"You don't need your father. I don't need mine. You've got me. And I promise I'm not going anywhere...ever, ever, ever!"

Kala shook her head slightly. It wasn't really that painful anymore. "You didn't know." She said softly. Having never truly met and gotten to know her father, she felt anger and sadness, but not necessarily any abandonment. Mother had taken care of her... to an extent. She perked her little ears, tail flicking happily. "And, and you have me." She said, blinking her eyes at the joy she felt deep within. Her brothers had never stated such a commitment to her. Mother loved her, but she was emotionally distant. For a young child, that was a big deal too. Pemmy would fill whatever space her parents had left lacking; she was sure of it.

What Kala said had struck Pem in an odd way. He had never realised before the space his father had left in him. The emptiness he had felt. Kala was right here filling it all up, every corner of loneliness was filled with this young girls promise. He still felt anger and resentment towards his father, but the loneliness was definitely lessened. He knew then and there that the two would be friends forever. Forever.
"We have eachother."
Pem smiled and nuzzled into Kala a little closer. I was at this point he felt kinda strange. It was an uncomfortable strange, but a strange none the less. He pulled back quickly, eyes wide. They were friends....friends.... He quickly shook his head.
"Uh...you um...er...hungry? I'm still starving from that rabbit I didn't get to eat."

Kala's tail flipped back and forth happily as she nuzzled against the boy's warm side. Finally, that space inside her that had once been empty was slowly being filled. A true, real friendship. When Pembroke pulled back, she looked up at him with the love that only a young child of innocence and naivety can feel. A true, real friend. Forever! The mention of the rabbit brought on flat ears, lowered eyes and a bashful half-smile. "Ah, you mean, the one that I lost you... Um, well, yeah. I'm a little hungry." She lifted her head quickly. "But, I wanna catch my own food!" With Pemmy at her side, she should be able to catch something!
