"I am here to protect and to change the fate of the many lives here that will be affected by the Death Note."

(Which includes Light, if he never had the Death Note he would've lived a long, happy life.)

I think alot of people would have liked to warn him. I honestly don't know what i'd do if i met him, i'll just be like "You're doing a good job, i appreciate your selflessness." or something like that. Or i'd ask him if i could be of any help.
