Sengdroma startled, jumping back quickly as if she had been attacked. The mugwort flying from her mouth as if it were poison. She had a stunned look on her face, not exactly sure what had caused the calm and poised mare to suddenly snap out of the blue.

She looked over to Embri as if she had two heads, waiting to see if the spell was over.

"I'm sorry." Embri dropped her head, giving it a small shake. "I should have asked, knowing that you were unfamiliar with the local flora. The other name for mugwort is foalbane." Not seeing any comprehension in the other mare's face she continued. "It's used to help deliver foals that are late, but it's also capable of ending a pregnancy, if it's early enough."

Oh Wind Spirit, does she even know herself? Out of the muck and into a turdpile, she probably thinks I'm crazy.

She blinked...blinked again. "Embri, I'm not pregnant." she laughed softly and shook her head, her mane tossing from one side to the other. "I haven't seen my ma...." she chose to change her words, "I'm not active in that respect." her nose crinkled a bit. Why did Maion -always- have to come up? Why couldn't she have a simple conversation without something always having to do with him comes up to intervene? She snorted a bit to herself, b*****d.

Even worse. Denial. Ah, it's just not my day....

"Uhuh... alright, let me ask you then. Insatiable appetite. Difficulty getting up in the morning, feeling like you're not quite your right self. Upset stomach that goes away after a few hours, but comes back after sunrise. Sound familiar?"

The alicorn sighed. "Seng... I know you do not know me, but I've been a healer likely longer than you've been alive, possibly longer than your parents have been alive. And your scent... is that of a mare in her first few months of gestation."

"You wouldn't have happened to have had a... dalliance, a couple moons ago....?" Embri turned her head sideways, contemplating the innocent looking mugwort. "I don't mind if you don't feel like talking about it... just... don't eat the mugwort. Try the wild oats or the clover instead."

This is not exactly the way first consultations usually go. Generally the mares find me, not the other way around!

"No, Not sen..." she stopped cold. The night before Maion brought her to Sofiel...."No...No no," she shook her head, talking to herself really more than Embri now. "Maion."

Her eyes shot up to Embri, almost pleading with her, "You've been wrong before though..right?"

At least it looks like we're going to skip anger and go right to bargaining... hopefully he wasn't a complete a**.

"Not nearly as often as I've been right, I'm afraid... though it will be quite a few mooncycles before you show any outward signs." Embri looked at Seng somewhat uncomfortably. This wasn't the first absent mate situation she had dealt with but they were often rather stressed.

"Eat. Pregnant or not you need sustenance, and I can hear the grumbling of your stomach over the birdsong. Nothing here has harmful side effects, besides the mugwort."

She stood there, silent for several moments, thoughts crossing her mind. Maion had left her here alone...would Sofiel kick her out?...She'd have to go home, to her parents for help...what would her father think of her?

She hadn't felt 'right' for quite some time...and she had been eating more than normal, though she had figured it was just the food in this area. If Embri was right, she had a lot of preparations to do. She sighed.

"Maion. His name is Maion, he brought me here to train...and left me." she paused for just a moment, "It's been quite a few moons since I've arrived," she didn't know what to say or how to react. She didn't have many friends, especially none that had experienced this. Her whole facial expression seemed to change, uncertainty.

"Embri, what will I do?"

Train? This seems like an odd place for training, unless you're an herbalist, which Seng certainly is not, or a ranger, which she seems too inexperienced for. Peculiar.

"Hmph, typical male - they're generally all the same, love and then leave, caring nothing for the consequences of their affections. What kind of training did you come here for, of all places?" The mare snorted. "You shouldn't let a mere stud boss you around." And if someone's taken advantage of her I'll happily kick his teeth in.

"What's done is done. The first thing you do is eat. Can't make decisions on an empty stomach." Embri deftly stripped the leaves off a mugwort stem with her teeth, chewing contemplatively. "Beyond that, there's not much to worry about. Our kind have been bearing foals since the children of the Wind Horse first took mortal shape."

Vast simplification but scaring her with all the remotely possible things that can go wrong with a pregnancy isn't called for right now.

She looked over the different types of plants, a little worried now...But Embri would tell her what was a bad choice. She found a patch of leafy greens and slowly began to chew. After a few mouthfuls, she stopped to answer Embri.

"To defend my herd...my family..." these words had a new meaning to her now. She had hoped to one day have the skills to protect her own offspring, but it seemed as though those days would be coming quicker than she had anticipated.

"And...he didn't force me here." Though Maion had left her, and she was mad at him for that, he had only done what she had asked...she wanted to train, but with him. "I asked to train,"

She took another bite of the leafy plant, chewing slowly, her thoughts drifting to what her future would soon hold for her.

"A noble purpose. Not everything in the forest is friendly, particularly those who follow the dark one's path. You must be here with a teacher, then, or are you seeking self-enlightenment on your own?"

The alicorn broke the cap off a mushroom and chewed thoughtfully. "Though paths may cross time and again, ultimately each alone must choose their footsteps."

"Mentor," she continued to chew thoughtfully as Embri spoke. "His name is Sofiel....he is an old warrior friend of Maion's. He's teaching me the art of defense,"

Embri's words made sense to her, though it didn't make her feel any better about the situation. It was just another challenge for her to face, another way that she can show Maion that she was worthy of him. She would be able to defend HER children...and he would never know. Stab him in the heart, cause him the same pain he had caused her. It would serve him right.

"Best you learn quickly then, you've a full turn of the seasons to accomplish your goal. Luckily our kind are quite able to carry on as normal up until the last mooncyle or so. I'd be happy to be your guide, Seng." Embri smiled ruefully. "I've seen just about all there is to see when it comes to little ones."

"Does your mentor know that you're with foals?" Embri tilted her head slightly in query. This part of the forest was outside the range she usually travelled, the residents here unfamiliar except for a few former patients, none of which were the kind to instruct in the arts of defence.

"I...I'm not sure if he is aware or not."

Truth be known, Sofiel knew she was expecting, hence why he would not teach her combat skills along with her learning how to read nature. He was waiting for her to foal before the physical aspects of her training started.

Her eyes cast an appreciative look over to Embri, "Thank you. I, I don't want to be alone..." She knew she wouldn't be alone if Sofiel kept her as a student, but it would be nice to have another mare around. Especially one trained in the art of midwife-ery.

"Is there anything I should be doing..Besides eating well?" she didn't even know where to start. She hadn't expected to even start trying for a family for a while since Maion had left. She didn't know what an expectant mother should do to care for her unborn little ones.

Ah. Another He. Embri snorted softly to herself, unimpressed with males.

"Well, if he's not, you'd best either tell him, or stay away from anything too strenuous on your own. Physical activity is good, stressing your body to the point of distress is not. It'll be doing enough of that on its own. If you think you're hungry now, just wait another year... you'll be ready to chew on everything in sight." Embri smiled a bit; the appetites of soon-to-deliver mares were rather legendary.

"There is nothing to be frightened of, all you have to do is follow your instincts. You've many mooncycles to prepare yourself for having a family of your own, decide if you want to keep them or not."

Embri walked a slow circle around Seng, looking her up and down.

"You're not in bad shape, a bit on the thin side for my tastes. How many seasons have ye? "

Sengdroma listened quietly to her new friend, she knew much more about the situation in hand than Seng did. That was a certain fact. “I’ll be even more hungry?” she thought to herself. That thought did not please her, she already felt like she was eating her own weight.

Her head tilted as Embri mentioned figuring out if she would want to keep them or not. Surely mothers didn’t give away their children? “Of course I’ll keep them, Embri…” she couldn’t imagine giving her own flesh to another to raise. Even though she would be a single mother, she would strive to be the best she could for them, in every manner.

Thin? Sengdroma had always thought she was in nice condition, she cast an eye over her shoulder trying to peer at herself. “I’m nearly three,” she was young still…the last of her parents children.
