"Um... tea actually, with milk, it better not be coffee..." He crinkled his nose. "It's um... Black tea, heavy milk, spices and um... a little sweetener, or... a lot depending who makes it." He said with a small shrug. "If you want to try I'll let you take the first sip."
"It's originally from india... I bet they do make coffee chai now though, ugh, god you'd think tea was a cardinal sin." He said scowling around, there were some lovely looking teas for offer, but it looked like the whole shop was drinking coffee, or expresso, or some tar like variant with whipped cream.
"Nothing against coffee, I just haven't found much of a taste for it..." he shrugged.

"Uh. Pass," Kirin said, weakly waving a hand. Fair enough for people who liked tea, but he wasn't one of them. And even if he did, that sounded like the strangest tea ever. Though maybe to tea drinkers it was like a coffee addict's triple espresso?
He couldn't take offensive at Zac's thoughts on coffee. Kirin explained, "That's my thoughts on tea."
An opening appeared at the counter, and Kirin gave Zac a tiny bump forward. Zac had offered to buy Kirin caffeine and Kirin wasn't about to turn that down.
"So what's it like trying to get tea in a dorm?" he asked, aware that Hillworth was live-in like BP had been. "Coffee in dorms was the worst swill in the world. Never stopped me from drinking it, though," he added after a thoughtful pause.

Zac chuckled "It's not so bad, another reason to learn to like -some- tea is that you can make it passible almost anywhere, as long as you have a general idea how long to steep it and you have access to a microwave or, even a candle you can heat the water for it. Of course they frown on candles but that, is what windows are for." he shrugged "... I think they cut the coffee out of the dorm pot with a knife... though I don't really know, early enough in the day you might still have to battle it to get it out of the pot."

That was true, Kirin considered. Tea was easier to make in your own room. The only kind of coffee you could do that for, was the powered kind. Ugh... Kirin shuddered. He didn't considered himself a coffee snob (since he'd drink just about anything as long as it had caffeine in it), but instant generally just didn't turn out well.
"Being stuck on campus sucks," he commiserated with Zac. Not being able to leave and buy a decent hot drink... Or to go to karaoke! Stupid boarding schools and their rules. At least Kirin was back to normal public school now.
"Should we sit while we wait?"

"Oh!... sure..." he said embarrassed that he hadn't thought to offer. He moved over and pulled the chair out for her, it was less impressive if you considered that he did the same for his mother. But no one but he knew that, and to him it was just... manners. So she was at times, more than a little of an old fashioned romantic. She still believed after all that his Father would return to her... he didn't know why though. They never even -heard- from the man that he knew of.
"So.. um... yeah, how long have you played chess?" Ok, that was probably an -awful- start to a conversation... so he didn't do this often without a -goal- in mind, it'd never struck him as an issue till now. Then again half the time he was talking to someone it was to gloat, direct them in the error of their ways or... inform them that they had just walked into a trap of his own devise. Kirin had done nothing to warrant a gloat, an dictation of error, nor had she walked into one of his traps... hell.

No one had ever pulled a chair out for Kirin before. He hadn't seen it done outside of fancy restaurants. There was a few moments where Kirin froze, trying to search for an appropriate response. Eventually he settled into the offered chair, his expression somewhere between bewildered and ... faint blushing? Nah, must be the warmth in the building.
"Ah... thank you," he offered, unsure what the expected response for something like that was. He was more than happy to seize on Zac's awful conversation starter. "Years, I guess. Nothing serious until junior high, but I used to play my grandfather when I was young." You know, when they could stand to look at each other for more than ten minutes. No chance of a game these days.
"How about you?"

A small laugh... "I started by reading a book...my Father gave me for a birthday, as sad as that must sound. That went -terribly- the first time I tried to play. I was so irritated that the game didn't go the way the book said. But after that I started watching the games, and by the time I started playing again I at least had some idea what I was doing and how the game worked rather than just remembering lay outs from a beginners book.
He just assumed that the Grandfather must be dead, so he didn't want to ask or press the issue.
What else should he ask? Oh boy... 'So... um... You enjoy singing a lot, are you in the chorus or something? Are you planning to try and go professional after school?"

Kirin sensed father issues. He was a little more attuned to these things than your average person, due to all his own family issues. Because Zac had left Kirin's mention of family alone, Kirin would do the same for Zac.
He could totally picture a tiny (tinier) Zac buried in books, though. He seemed the type.
"I never had the patience for it as a kid," Kirin offered. "Rushed my moves, tried to rush others, couldn't stand to leave a game unfinished I had to know same-day who had won. So it was never me."
Kirin had more patience now, though he still felt the need to burn energy while playing. Sitting still and thinking deeply was too boring for him. But he could finally take his time, plan his strategies, and could wait a long time for his plans to come to fruition. He didn't mention this to Zac, though - no one gave too much away right before a game.
There was a tightening of lips and eyes at the mention of chorus. Kirin gave a smirk that was more of a grimace. "Groups and I don't do so well together," he said loftily. "It's just a hobby for me. I don't want to get tied to practices, to silly competitions where they pick your song choice apart and tell you that you would have scored higher if you'd been a boy singing that song, and little divas who think screeching Whitney Houston makes them the next big star."
Why, yes, Kirin may have tried this before.

A wince from Zac "Ugh... I honestly think that people appreciate some of the sopranos in those competitions for the soul reason that their upper range hearing is -shot-, and if it wasn't when the started than it sure is after they get going, give NO mention of the ones who think that adding vibrato to everything from Happy Birthday to The Sound of music makes it -better-" He stopped himself from the unexpected tangent with a small embarrassed cough. "hmm... Not that I... well.. yes... Oh! theirs our drinks!"
Saved by the steaming cardboard cups... dear lord. He scooted up to go fetch them a light blush of his own on his cheeks. Yes, must be from coming out of the cold damn it. At least it wasn't as bad as with Dem at times, good lord. Still, this was.. nice.. very nice. Having someone to talk to like this. He should -really- be questioning motive right now, but he could do that -and- enjoy himself right?

Kirin was grateful for the distraction of their drinks arriving. It was too easy to get into ranting mode with Zac, and then more spilled out that Kirin usually revealed - especially considering this was only their second meeting. (Not a date, not a date.)
He sipped his coffee experimentally. Licking his lips, Kirin decided the caramel was a nice addition. A little extra sweetness without turning it into a sugary dessert drink. He began plotting which other syrup additions he'd have to try next visit.
"How's your chai?" Kirin asked. "I'm thinking this place deserves a repeat visit sometime."

Zac took a cautious sip, it wafted the smell of strange spices on its steam and he did an odd little shrug at how hot it was but after a moment he nodded approvingly. "Mmm Hot but good." He curled his fingers around it to let the warmth from the cup seep into his fingers. "I think you may be right." He nodded. "Theirs a few people i've overheard raving about their cinnamon rolls too." he conceded. Perhaps next time, if he were hungry he'd try one, if they weren't -too- sweet it'd be rather nice.

"Really?" Kirin swung a look over his shoulder at the counter. He'd been so fixated on getting his caffeine fix that he hadn't even noticed the pastries and desserts available. Yet there they were, a large glass counter full of treats. "Huh. We'll have to come back again."
Abruptly, Kirin's face flushed red. He didn't want Zac to think Kirin was jumping to conclusions, that Kirin was one of those crazies who assumed everything was a date. "I mean, separately. Not together. Or..." Kirin realised he was possibly going too far in the other direction. "Or together, but not together together. Not like a date."
Words ran together as Kirin spoke softly but quickly, a kind of calm babbling that came from trying to over-explain things.
"Not that I don't like you. You're one of the least sucktacular people I know. And... I'm just... going to stop talking now." Kirin trailed off, not used to making such an a** of himself in public. He dropped his attention to his coffee, wondering the earth would be kind enough to swallow up everyone else in the room.

He blinked, several times.
"I... um... thank you?" He said tilting his head a little almost owlishly to one side. He laughed a little. "I think I get what you mean though, Don't worry, I am... not one of those so desperate do date that I would force that meaning on anything involving mutual company... " he sipped his drink and then made a face. "er... Not that if I were looking that I would...turn you away...you are... defiantly non sucktacular yourself." He said, seeming to have caught her fluster.

Zac's response made it a little easier to look up again. Kirin attempted a small smile - he was unsure if it worked, but it was kind of flattering to hear that someone who seemed to agree that the rest of the world was filled with douchebags similarly found Kirin to be an exception. To be 'non sucky' to people like Kirin and Zac was the equivalent of... being 'liked' by normal people.
"Yeah, exactly," Kirin said. That was it. He was desperate, or assuming than any interaction meant liking or dating. He turned and looked out the window, unable to look at Zac as he said, "It's... it's not so bad, spending time with you, though. It's surprisingly... nice."

A hint of pink in his cheeks at that word. "...yes... nice..." He agreed. glancing away as well... lovely display that. Yes, very ...entrancing.
"Ah..you know if you prefer I think I see a portable chess board in that corner... if you'd prefer to stay out of the cold or. If you had somewhere else in mind..." He trailed off.
For all he knew it was a backgammon board not a chess board at all.
