Merrill huffed a sigh. Spirits, will I have to spell out everything to him? Aye . . . Patience, patience. "You misunderstand me," she told him, swivelling her gaze to encompass the river to the right of them as they walked; all clear. "Many become gammas and betas, yes, but within those general ranks are other tasks assigned to them. As the sole beta right now, I take on the responsibility of overseeing border patrols and keeping the inner workings of the pack smooth, for instance. If you seek gamma status, there are other options: are you more skilled in stalking as a hunter or spying as a scout, for instance? Durable for multiple patrols as a border keeper or night vigils as a guardian? Or," and here she meant to make it a joke, "perhaps you would be more personable and be a pup-sitter. I'd rather you make a specific choice rather than myself having to make them for you."

So that's what she had meant? He felt a little displeased at himself for not understanding. "Ah, sorry for causing such misunderstanding. I believe I'm quite suitable in hunting. My training serves me well there. But night vigils are good as well. I'm..." he paused, "not much of a sleeper." It was true. Ovian would take quick naps at night but would wake up at night. He didn't feel comfortable sleeping...ever. This made his stamina drop quickly, but he used every single bit. One day Ovian would have to try and sleep longer, deeper. But how? Hur...

She nodded with some satisfaction. "Good, good. I shall place you on night vigil starting tonight if you can, then," she stated without having to think it over for very long. "And hunt when you are not exhausted. I won't lie, I'm no nightcrawler myself. I rise with the sun, take an afternoon nap, and grab shut-eye with dusk's advent. I have been having to stay up late, however, to keep up night-vigil when others do not; we are lacking in those who are strong enough to take on jobs like that." It was a little of opinion mixed in with fact; Ki-Adi was too soft-spoken like the omega Lulluby, Corvus within her bias's reach against green to take him seriously, and the pups not yet old enough to begin working towards their ranks.

Merrill turned them back around towards the pack. "This will do for now, I have scented no immediate danger. Thank you for accompanying me today, Ovian." With that, she flagged her tail for him to follow and trotted towards YMCA once more.

Ovian nodded and followed her back. So his position was to keep night-vigil and to hunt. A suitable position for a wolf like him. What would his life be like? The dark wolf couldn't see his future, something he didn't like all too well. "Yes, I can start tonight," he replied before they split as they got to the clearing. As he watched her go, Ovian turned back into the forest. What else could he do? What else could he say? The male's future lay in his position, and how well he did it. This was the start of a new beginning, and a new life.
