Yehudah ZonkotheSane wear a mogen dovid necklace? (star of david, for those who don't know) well not really. The other day i wore my Hamesh hand and my Chai. And i braught somethign to this ladies car and you know i was kind and polite with her as always, then when i put the thing in her car she says "Bless you child, May Jesus Bless you and your smile, have a Merry Christmas" domokun she tipped well thow. yeah, i know. she was probably being nice and hinting for you to repent for jesus hath diedst for thy sins, and thus loveth you. the last day of public school (in which i am proud to have worn a yalmuke, tzitzis, and perhaps an overly expressed opinion in social studies sweatdrop ) everybody was getting yearbooks signed, and this one guy wrote "jesus loves you" in mine. i just smiled wrote something about jesus being gay, and showed it to him. it was funny, and he took it in good taste.

Zonko- It doesn't matter if you accept Jesus or not. If someone says something like that, even if you're obviously Jewish, just grin and bear it. I spent three years delivering canned food for Christmas (based out of my JEWISH day school) to a predominantly black community where most of the older members of the community were very religious. I can't count how many times we got wished a "merry Christmas", were told "God bless you!" or "Jesus bless you!" It's their way of thanking you. And since you can tell they appreciate what you've done for them, why's it matter how they say it? Would you prefer they didn't thank you at all or just slammed the door in your face?
Then again, my Jewish identity comes a lot more from social action than my beliefs. I'm fairly agnostic.

While I understand that for many of us the whole "Merry Christmas"/"God bless you"/"Jesus loves you" thing gets annoying, it's something we have to deal with. If it offends you that much, move to Israel. I'm totally serious about that. If you want to live in America, you have to accept that most of the community around us is Christian. People wishing you "Merry Christmas" is an expression of goodwill, and saying anything rude to them because you aren't Christian just makes things harder for us. I assume most of you have heard about the conservative Christians who are fighting against "Happy Holidays". They blame us for a lot of that, and by getting upset over being told "Merry Christmas" we aren't helping.

.... sweatdrop
ok, i think poeple kinda got the wrong idea from my post. kinda. silverah-its a great thing you did, and of course in that situation, you would be right: just say thank you. however, this was casual, between classmates. now that i think about it, it probably wasn't the most mature thing i could have done, but i won't lose any sleep over it. if i lost sleep over every stupid thing i've in my life (hell, in the last year) i'd have my own type of insomnia. i'm a work in progress. i can admit that.
anyway, the point of my post was that theres no point in getting angry. either smile and say thank you, or at least take it in good humor.

I just kind of assume they don't know any better and reply, "Thank you!" and smile. It's nice to be thought of. But it does get a bit annoying after a while.

Just got out of a debate about how people are actually insulted by teh term "Happy Holidays", and if I'm guessing correctly, it isn't quite over yet sweatdrop Though, I was wanting to put "Happy Hannukah" in my Sig, but I'm wanting it in proper Hebrew, though I don't know any Hebrew. Could anyone here be of assistance? sweatdrop

But don't trust me on it. If you wait until after Shabbas, one of our Yeshiva boys might be better to ask about that.

Yeah I read some of letters from Christians in my community in our newspaper, and some of it was really bad. My personal favorite was "the vicious minority that is keeping us from saying Merry Christmas in peace." Of course, they mean anyone that isn't Christian, not just Jews, but that's scary. 'vicious?!' Now we're vicious for wanting to celebrate our own holidays?
I get 'Merry Christmas' a lot. Usually I just reply 'Happy Holidays', but sometimes I'll tell them I'm Jewish. I actually had someone not believe me once. It was pretty sad.

I've actually had someone not believe I was Jewish recently. I look Jewish enough, but I guess if you don't know the stereotype... And I wear a magen david every day. But the kicker, of course, was that this guy said something like "Wait- you're really Jewish?" after we had all been joking about how I'm 'the Jew', and the friends I was with tend to great me with something like, "Hey Jew"
