"I'm sorry," she said, bringing her gaze back to Howl's face and appearing nothing less than startled. Her expression was rather like a deer in the headlights, and twice as innocent. "I was looking out for youma." She took the compliment gracefully, smiling again. "You're not boring at all." Even if he had been being boring, she would have pretended interest anyway--probably wouldn't have taken the time to look around for youma.
Such good conversation partners deserved a long, full life!
She nodded. "The Princess is the most down-to-earth best friend ever." The addendum of 'best friend' suggested that she was probably too biased to be really definitely truthful about how level-headed her Princess was. But it was true that her Princess was the best Princess ever, she just felt it went without saying. If you didn't know that Virgo's Princess was the best ever, then you would know just from the happy look on her face. The devotion there was nearly slavish. When she thought about the Captain, though... the Captain was scary. She frowned a little bit.
Well, no helping that. She giggled, free hand covering her teeth, "I guess. I like reading romance novels, they're so... they make me happy." Most people would have been embarrassed, but not Virgo; she was looking ahead one more, pretending to be ever vigilant.
She stopped for a moment on the mentions of a suitable suitor. Avery... Oh, she knew she hadn't really been dating him for a whole year, but it felt like it. There wasn't a gap of time between death the first time and the beginning of Barren Pines; it was as if she died, then woke up to a new semester at a school she'd always attended, and she had loved Avery. Deeply. Her eyes had gone blank, distant, like she was looking at something else. (She was: a face, not Avery's but close, skin a shade paler and hair a bit darker. Not anyone she knew in this lifetime.)
Then she shook her head and started to walk again. "I guess, but I'm not really looking for one right now," she said brightly. "Papa wouldn't like it if I was, either."

"Ah, Youma. What exactly are the 'Youma,' Miss Virgo?" Howl, being merely a human, was not as familiar with the city-wide goings on as others. His knowledge so far was that they were ugly, and obviously dangerous. It really wasn't a very educated portrayal of this "Youma" creature, and if there was one thing Howl did not want to be was uneducated.
As he awaited a response, he listened to her fond explanation of her Princess. As the girl smiled fondly, he could not help but mirror the same sort of smile, as if he actually knew the Princess himself. The momentary frown was easily observed, but it was fleeting at absolute worst. It was nothing that needed attention.
He could not help but admire the look upon her face as she spoke of the romance novels. It was always lovely when a girl spoke of love with such passion. This girl seemed so young to have such firm beliefs in love, but perhaps she had clutched onto the ideals and magic of true love from fairy tales as a child. However, the enchanting expression upon her face seemed to dull for a brief moment. The young man couldn't help but suspect it was something he had said. Maybe the girl had recently been in a relationship that ended? In an attempt to comfort her silently, he gently placed his fingers from his free hand upon her arm firmly latched within his own. "There is no rush, Miss Virgo. I am certain you will find someone, on your own time, my dear." His smile was still ever so kind as his fingers gently patted her arm.
Perhaps it had all happened too fast, but the two teenagers approached the side of Hillworth Grammar School. The campus was always so grim looking compared to the rest of Destiny City. With a disappointed sigh, he turned back to the Sailor Scout. "Alas, it would seem our time together is over, my dear. I thank you, Miss Virgo, for the escort back to the campus."

She looked at Howl solemnly. "They are monsters," said Virgo, as if that wasn't clear. "They're... they eat... starseeds." Then, by rote, she recited: "Everyone is born with a star in their heart. We must always stand ready against the Darkness to protect it." Returning to her normal mode of speech, happy and sing-song, she said, "Well, that's what I was told when I was recruited. Princess said so, and the Princess is always right."
There was no response to what he had said; she suspected, strongly, that he assumed the relationship had ended the normal way. So she was silent until they reached the school, where she smiled and said, "Seems like it. And don't worry about it! Just tell Simon that I say hi, okay?"
It took some effort to keep up the smile, but she managed.

Monsters and Starseeds. Monsters, he understood, but Starseeds were a bit more vague to him. At least she offered a poetic explanation for what a Starseed was.
Everyone is born with a star in their heart.
He nodded his head at her explanation before allowing his gym bag to slip off his shoulder to land heavily on the ground. In an elegant motion, he had taken up her hand with his free one and detached his arm from around her own. His hand lifted hers slightly and he planted another kiss upon her gloved hand. Teal eyes looked up to her green ones for perhaps the last time. This was his first meeting with a Sailor Scout, and perhaps it would be the only one he'd ever have.
As if he was making a vow of loyalty, he uttered "The next time I see Mr. Ferris, I will send him your regards, my dear." His lips had been in a consistent smile the whole time, but it widened slightly as he confessed "I sincerely hope I do have the pleasure of encountering you again, Miss Virgo. Until we meet again, my dear." With a slight formal bow, he then released her hand and turned back to his bag. He scooped up his possession and then calmly walked back to the main building to check back in with the faculty. He casually drew his free hand up so his watch was facing his eyes. Howl still had 10 minutes left.
"Ah, just on time" he laughed to himself.

Smiling again, she curtseyed once more, this time a little more deeply. "All right. Have a good day," she said, backing up so she wouldn't be visible from the school building. Once she had seen the civilian safely in, she turned to the building behind her--hopped up, and was quickly gone beyond sight.
