This may sound really stupid, but I'm guessing the pets with the little saddles are the rarer version right?

How often do custom slots open up? Can I possibly bribe the artists?

It usually varies based on activity and the amount of events in-thread. O: All staff are unable to take customs, breedings (with the exception of breeders for this one), or bribes unless they fulfill a minimum requirement (this differs depending on job so I won't list them all but if you're interested, you can see all the information in our old hiring thread here), but if a colorist is interested in opening slots, you'll usually be able to tell because there will be a large flatsale, various games, and / or open breeding slots in-thread.
All bribe requests can also be PMed to the mule if you'd like to send one right away. However, I wouldn't recommend it because:
1. You cannot choose your colorist. (Well, I suppose you could, but a colorist is more likely to see PMs in his or her own inbox than a mule's and so specifying one can result in a long(er) wait.)
2. As stated above, bribes may not be taken unless a minimum requirement is met. Because of this, it could take months for your PM to be acknowledged because, even if a colorist takes on bribes earlier, he or she may not want to choose your bribe. If you PM a colorist directly with a bribe when he or she has slots open, then you can tell what their decision is when they post it up without having to wait forever and a half.
Syaoran-Puu (the one hosting the Design Your Own auction) has also expressed interest in opening up her slots around the first of November. At the moment, I believe she's the only one who's close to fulfilling all requirements.
