"No, we're not superheroes like that," said Virgo. Was Fallon seriously planning what Virgo was thinking Fallon was planning? Because she was pretty sure that if their positions had been reversed and she had the magical power to detect youma... who was she kidding. Virgo would have stayed home and hid under her bed. No one would be stupid enough to go youma-hunting, right? Right?

She looked back at Fallon again. "I'm usually around here," she said, "or around the Academy, sometimes. But I haven't seen other senshi enough to really get, you know, familiar with their patrol routes or anything. Just please be careful?"

There wasn't really anything on her mind--except, gosh, she hoped Fallon wasn't going to do anything stupid. She knew what happened to people who got their starseeds consumed by youma.

Fallon had no specific plans, but she had persistent thoughts. Was that enough to make her risk death? Probably not. But she didn't know the extent of the risk that following that feeling would force her to take. Starseed, schmarsmeed. Fallon just wanted to understand that nagging feeling, to scratch the itch of its pull. No plans, just postulation.

Her mind wandered back to the conversation, eyes finding Virgo's. "Yes, I'll be more careful," she said, mostly meaning it. Fallon did not have a death wish, but this new sensation hung in the back of her mind. Those little powerful monsters... they were there too. For now, she was just happy to be alive, and the cinnamon-haired girl made a mental note to not linger in the streets so late at night, or perhaps to start shopping with a buddy.

As they neared Crystal Academy, Fallon's mind returned to when Virgo first fell onto the scene. She had said something -- what was it? All at once Fallon remembered. "Do you know me?" she said, curiosity evident on her face. "You knew my name. You said it when we first started to run." More like, Virgo started to run and Fallon just came along for the ride. Still, her point was valid.

Oops. Oh, man, she was gonna catch it if the Captain or, well, anyone knew that she'd slipped up and called a civilian by their name before being introduced. Virgo sighed and mumbled, "Et merde."

She was quiet for a minute, trying to think of an explanation, which was probably an explanation in itself. "Well... um... sort of. A long time ago, I don't know how I managed to remembered your name at all." Would that work? If it didn't work, no one would know; she could see the Academy and beat a quick retreat. She knew she could run fast enough that most people couldn't keep up.

It was really, really cold. How was she not noticing how cold it was?

For emphasis, she added, "It was a really long time ago."

When Virgo spoke in French (and a swear, at that), Fallon smiled. A lot. She smiled like Frankie might smile in the presence of Edward Cullen, or Andeon in the presence of a bottle of good alcohol, or Zue in the presence of a stray cat. Her lips were forming French syllables before her mind was conscious of the action. "It is so nice to hear someone else my age speak French! Are you fluent? Did you live there? Could we speak French for the rest of the walk to Crystal Academy?" The cold combined with the excitement made Fallon bounce back and forth on her heels, hair swaying behind her.

Those two little words made the whole hey-random-magical-girl-knows-my-name thing disappear in a flash of croissants and baguettes. C'est magnifique!

She might have slid a step away from Fallon at that creepy smile. Maybe, like an entire step, and she was fiddling with her circlet as she walked. It was a really, really creepy expression.

"Oui, I speak it fluently, and I grew up there! In Paris, actually. And I don't mind speaking French, it's my native tongue." She smiled in relief, though, thinking about how she had successfully managed to avoid revealing how she knew Fallon's day. That was a minor miracle.

With a toss of her hair, she said, "I guess... Well, nevermind that." She smiled, brightly.

The smile did not dissipate. It was glued to her lips now. Fallon was not a native Frenchmen, and a part of her felt the need to compensate for this by being excessively prideful and chatty about the place that had been her home for most of her adolescence. Sailor Virgo was about to be her victim -- at least until they reach Crystal Academy.

"You save my life and speak French to me. I think it was worth being chased by a monster," she said, bouncing a little on her heels. This was a cracked out version of Fallon. If Fallon ever took uppers, she would probably be like this all the time.

They turned a corner, and Fallon spotted the familiar archway leading up to Crystal Academy in the distance. It was so late. She'd probably get scolded by an administrator. Oh well. Nothing she could do to stop that now. "Why did you leave France?" she asked, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. Fallon left for Barren Pines and to escape her parents while they contemplated divorce. It wasn't the most pleasant reason. Still, she was curious why Sailor Virgo would leave.

"Nothing is worth almost getting dead," Virgo said, firmly, "If I had found you as a civilian, I would have spoken French to you, too." She was lying; probably if she'd met Fallon as Elke, she would have hightailed it back to her dorm room and cowered under the covers until Serenade beaned her with a pillow or something.

Not like the Princess would ever do such a thing.

She saw the arched gateway, paused for a moment, and said, "Do you need help getting in?" Virgo, come to think of it, had to get back to her dorm soon if she wanted to sneak out patrolling with the Princess. "I could jump over--"

Why had she left France? Well, because Papa had told her to. Elke was a good girl, and when told to go, she went. Virgo, though... Well, the same thing; Elke and Virgo were really the same.

"For school," she said, "Because Papa wanted me to meet my American family."

Sailor Virgo was right. Fallon had no desire to die. And though Fallon would usually want to dominate her interaction with a pretty girl like Virgo, the urge was ignored in light of how grateful she was to have been saved. How odd, she thought, for her well-being to depend on others. Fallon had certainly (and continued to be) a loved child, but she was also independent from her family in a way she could never articulate to them. The OCD had something to do with it, she knew that. It was just... sometimes Fallon felt like she had to take care of her parents. She always talked to her mom about every little grievance, and she was constantly coaching her dad to be more assertive at work. Her parents offered her love all over the place, but they did very little for in her the way of guidance.

Coming back to Destiny City, for example, had been entirely Fallon's idea. So was applying to fancy private schools.

The thought of her parents made her miss them for a moment, but she recovered quickly, refocusing on the conversation at hand. "I have an aunt who still lives in Destiny City, but most of my mother's family lives up north," she said, eying the high fence the hedged around the school. Yeah. No way was she climbing that. Not in these shoes. "I'm not much of a climber. I think I will just call the front desk attendant and have them let me in. They won't bother me about missing curfew." The latter was true. Fallon's parents had paid a lot of money to Crystal Academy, and the administration knew that she was one of the special transfer students who might need a little extra help to get back on their feet. It was one of the few good things about the whole Barren Pines/Organ Ring debacle. People were constantly willing to make excuses for you, even if it meant she had mandatory sessions with the school psychiatrist for the next month or so.

Fallon pulled out her cellphone, eyes flickering to Sailor Virgo. "Thank you for... tackling the youma," she said, though the word felt foreign on her tongue. She had no idea how to say "youma" in French so English would have to do.

She smiled. "I know how that is." Virgo patted the older girl's shoulder and patted her own fuku back into place. If Fallon wanted to go through the gate, that was okay; she'd just hop back into her dorm room and drop henshin back into Elke, nestle up and go to sleep. There had been an awful lot of excitement, after all.

"Don't worry about it," she said brightly, then she turned serious again with an admonishment: "And don't go out wandering by yourself after dark, okay? Bring someone with you!"

It seemed to go without saying.

"Good night, Fallon," said Virgo.

Fallon smiled and dialed the number for Crystal Academy. "Good night... Sailor Virgo," she said, though it sounded strange to refer to someone in such a way. The wind picked up, an icy chill seeping in through her clothes.

It was rude to turn your back on a person, but Fallon could feel the departure in the air. So she nodded in goodbye and angled her body away, half convinced that the senshi might have some kind of glowing exit procedure. For that, Fallon kept one eye staring in her direction. She would think about what Virgo said, but the independent girl felt it might be impossible for her to never go out after dark.

Oh well. C'est la vie.
