Eww...really eww...
This makes me so happy I'm horrifically allergic to corn--which extends to the use of artificial sweeteners because of their use of starch.
I've also heard that extended exposure to HFCS can destroy or diminish the sense of taste.

best alternative for a sweetener is stevia. unfortunately the plant is illegal to sell in the USA but the extract is sold by companies like Truvia. or you can grow your own and dry out the leaves and crush them into powder. the next best sweetener is raw organic honey and then real maple syrup. stay far away from aspartame and agave!

Stevia plants are readily available here in the spring at home improvement stores, and are also available at mailorder nurseries. I used stevia for several years, and found cooking with it to be a bit tricky.....don't try to substitute in recipes for jams and jellies, for example. It may have been difficult to buy plants here in the States at one time, but I've seen them everywhere the past 2 or 3 years.

Huffington Post had an article the other day saying the unhealthiness of HFCS is a food myth. I hate how places keep putting out bad information like this.

I'm trying to cut high fructose corn syrup out of my diet, so far it's going pretty well. Though once I started paying attention to the ingredients on food and drink labels, it really irritated me that some of the tea I used to drink had more high fructose corn syrup than actual tea. -___- The same with things like juice and lemonade, too. I wanted LEMONade, not high-fructose-corn-syrup-ade, thanks! It's going to be tough to avoid during Halloween though. Any suggestions for candy that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup?

Almost any Hershey product. Don't trust Nestle or M&M/Mars. They both usually contain HFCS. As for fruity, chewy, sour and gummy candies. There are none what so ever that do not contain HFCS. Sad but, true.

Any suggestions for candy that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup? go to a grocery store like raley's, savemart or safeway, or even riteaid/walgreens and you should find huge chocolate bars, but I don't think they are in the candy section. I buy the 93% or 97% dark chocolate bars, eating a couple squares a day is actually beneficial to your health, but more than that and the cons start to out way the pros. They should also sell delicious milk chocolate bars and some with added flavors like orange or mint or white chocolate (which has a lot more sugar in it). I also like to buy kettle baked potato chips. Also expensive fruits like mangos (to me they are like candy).

Let me preface this comment with "I don't eat sweets." I make them for other people, but don't eat them myself.
That being said, haven't any of you ever made fudge, for example, where the recipe called for corn syrup? Are we not the ones who are ultimately responsible for what goes into our mouths, and the consequences of those choices? "Goodies," in general, are not necessary to maintain life, certainly not health. If you are healthy then A LITTLE BIT of sweet, no matter what it is, is not going to hurt you, although it may give you a "rush."
When we were kids, sweet treats were reserved for the holidays. No desserts at my house, no Kool-Aid, no juice---so, of course, when I had my OWN house, I did whatever I wanted, and there was sugar in some form pretty regularly. It didn't take long to realize that it just made me feel terrible to consume it in any form, alcohol included. I tried just cutting back, but that didn't work. The solution was to just quit totally, and I mean TOTALLY, no pasta or bread either. I still make these things for the other people in the family, I just don't eat them, with the exception of a couple of cookies when I'm baking them, out of several dozen.

@Hester Peche: Figures, chewy, fruity candy is my favorite. Ah well, I don't eat candy as much as I used to, so I suppose if I only reserve it for a rare special occasion, it'll be okay. Definitely glad to hear that Hershey's is all right, I'll stick to that. I've also heard that Lindt chocolate doesn't use hfcs, either.
@TrutherMei: Mm, I love kettle cooked chips too. I should really be buying more fruit as it is, so that's a good idea. Usually I get grapes or tropical fruit, those are my favorites for snacks. Oh, and berries. <3
@Sunsetsmile: What helped you quit eating sugar? It seems like it would be really difficult.
...I'm so hungry now, haha.

Strega Mama @little batwing you could always make your own candy. that could be great fun! That does sound fun. I've made 'candy sushi' before, but that's about it (and you need other types of candy to make it, so... I don't think that counts, haha). I'll have to look up some recipes and see what would be easy to start with. :3
