If Sue was supposed to be offended, he missed his cue. Part of him had been there; a year ago, that part of him had died, and that was when Zue had joined with the rest of him. If Sue himself had failed to be there, well... it hadn't been his duty then, just an unfulfilled piece of destiny. He'd just have to take a rain check for the next time there was a call for everyone to die on a rescue mission.

Of course, the part of him that did die screeched with indignity. But that was all undercurrents, twinges, suggestions. Nothing that leaped to the forefront of Sue's mind.

"She thinks I've been going to Meadowview this whole time, attending a gifted program. That's not even the freaky part, though. I mean, I wrote e-mails, you know? I was on Facebook all the time. But all the stuff I wrote is gone now." Sue pressed his lips together, then ventured his guess - "I think the Opal Crystal hid it. And I think that means it's better that they don't know."

"Maybe," Elke whispered.

Anyone who knew Elke knew that she didn't keep secrets well. Even if she pinky swore to never tell another living soul, she'd end up telling another living soul someday. Somehow. She just did, because she was Elke Arma. She was the kind of girl who changed three letters in your name and asked for advice for you on her blog. She gossiped--not meanly--about everything. To have something she really, truly couldn't talk about would be like sticking ants under her skin and telling her she couldn't do a thing about it.

Well, that was pretty succinctly what was up, anyway. She needed a subject change. "I'm also sorry for siccing Sebby on you," she said. "I thought he'd promised not to go attack you at that shed thing, and then he did. I'm sorry."

Aw, ********. They weren't going to keep going like this; for one thing, Sue wasn't gracious enough to handle so many apologies, and for another, they'd be there all night if Elke was really going to try and apologize for every little wrong she'd ever done.

"All's forgiven, Elke," Sue sighed grouchily. "Really. Let's just... forget it. Okay?" Forgetting wasn't something Sue did well. But maybe it was called for in this instance - just this once. For the sake of the team, and their princess.

Who he still had not met. And wasn't likely to meet soon, if the hospital folks got their way. God damn it all.

Elke brightened. "Okay," she agreed, opening her eyes and looking at Sue. She pursed her lips and stared, then said: "Mackenzie was wrong, you are not a looker when your hair's down. You're a Sue when your hair's down."

This she possibly did mean to be offensive.

"I should go," she said, sitting back in the chair and swinging her feet again. "Maman and Papa will be looking for me." And she wanted a look at that list.

Mackenzie had said... what? Sue's face went blank, an instinctive defensive measure when coming across something he didn't quite know how to react to. It was like... it was like those Geminis lived to fluster him....

Better to dismiss all thoughts of that now, before they started working some insidious spell on him that would cause his eye to twitch whenever their names were mentioned.

"Yeah," Sue agreed non-chalantly, "all right, that's fine." He didn't see any point in getting all mushy about her going. Elke had come, and she'd visited him; it had been a little awkward, but overall, surprisingly pleasant. Better to leave it on that note, right?

She stood up, straightened her heavy coat and picked up her bag. The suit was walking over towards them, impassive face in an impressive frown. Apparently he, too, had decided it was time for her to go home. Elke smiled at the man. "You rest up, okay?"

A furtive look. Sue would probably not know this look, he had mostly been an antagonist at Barren Pines, she had never had to pull out her You're going to get hugged look on him. Stepping forward, she hugged Sue tightly, tight enough to squeeze all the air out of him. "Take care, Sue," said Elke when she had let go and scampered away. "I'll see you soon, okay?"

Waving enthusiastically, she followed the suit out of the ward.

"Yeah," Sue had been saying. There'd been the sense that something might be wrong, but poor Sue was inexperienced in the ways of Elke-wrangling, unable to read what was to come. So, with a slightly mystified look on his face, he'd gone on like nothing was wrong, saying, "And look, you see the others, you tell them hi for meeaAAAAAAH ******** SHE HUGGED ME!"

Really. Sue made it sound like she'd just stabbed him in the gut. He continued swearing crossly as Elke made her retreat, making all manners of noise (though if Elke had been more familiar with Sue-speak, she might have known that this was a sort of amused kind of grumbling, with only a dash of true grouchiness in the mix.)

"Struck like a goddamn broke-tail rattler," was what Elke heard as she left the room while Sue squirmed and brushed at his shoulders as though to remove the Elke-taint.
