The Basilisk swayed eagerly from side to side not able to contain the excitement that was bubbling up in her. This was something of a surprise to Ebony as it was the most active the black clad Frei had been since her birth only a few months prior. Usually she was too busy sleeping and keeping warm to be bothered with doing much of anything else. Perhaps the prospect of meeting other Raevans, ones who wouldn't hold a grudge against her due to her unfavorable actions during her time under the influence of the virus, was what prompted Delia to be and do more. Hands clasped tight and smoke orbs shining bright, Cordelia waited patiently while Lucia finally ripped open the gift. She sure hoped she liked it. Though Ebony was the one who had picked most of the gifts, it was still fun to watch others open them to discover the secret inside. The last piece of wrapping paper fell away and revealed a small statue of the Egyptian Goddess Bastet.Ebony had snuck a brief peek over to the Rose Raevan then. It pained her to hear that they had suffered the same hardships as themselves, but it was good to see her and Ethan both here now, healthy and happy. Or as happy as she could tell. One never knew after all. "I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm glad you both are doing well now too." She had wanted to say more, but the man side-tracked her with his question. The purple haired woman leaned back and contemplated what to say. It was different telling him what Cordelia was. Aphi had seen it and Isi knew because he was his brother and worked at the Lab. Eiry and Riv couldn't be kept out what with how things had gone down after the capture. Kyou and the rest of the Lab staff had to know for obvious reasons, but that was it. No one else knew the specifics, but looking at the girl it wasn't that hard to figure out what she was technically. "She's a snake." She was quiet for another moment, still debating how Ethan would react if he told him what kind of snake. Then Ebony sighed and leaned in towards him to whisper, "Well...to be specific she's a basilisk."

The kitten liked the wrapping paper. She tore into it. She ripped it up. She threw it up in the air and then her mouth spread into a brighter grin as she saw the statue. The kitty was like her. It had piercings and pretty gold necklaces. Floating up, she wrapped her arms around Delia in a hug. "Thank you!"
Placing the cat to the side, Lucia opened her little hand bag and pulled out an unopened tube of the most pretty shade of dark pink lipstick. She had gotten it as a Christmas gift from Yuu, but the kitten figured that since she got a present, it would be good to give her friend one in return.
"Here! This is for you." The kitten smiled, looking at Delia's expression. "Merry Christmas!"

Watching Lucia tear off the wrapping paper and revealing the small cat statue Vyn murmured her agreement at how nice the present was. Whilst Lucia whipped out her gift for the smoke based raevan Vyn turned her attention to her own gift. Rather less frantically she removed the wrapping; dainty untying the ribbon and then prying the wrapping paper apart so that it fell away cleanly – almost undisturbed enough for it to be used again without any blemishes. Underneath the coloured paper sat her gift to which she responded with a smile of thanks lifting it to admire fully.
The way that Ebony responded to his queering perplexed Ethan at first. She responded instantly that Cordelia’s soul had been a snake, but something about her tone of voice left a question mark lingering over the reply. Was it just a snake or...? Ethan knew that some raevan’s origins were more likely to be seen in fairytales and books about the arcane than in scientific journals... Could the British woman be suggesting that Cordelia’s soul was an example of these unusual captures? The quickly following whisper confirmed the businessman’s curious ideas.
“A basilisk you say?” He mused the thought over in his head, watching the raevan’s interacting on the other side of the room. Yes, now he could see some of the snake-like traits in the girl. The way she seemed to slither from place to place and the cold unblinking scaled eyes. His knowledge of folklore was admittedly rather rudimentary – dealing with beats of legend was rarely necessary within the boardroom – however he could paint a basic picture of the serpentine animal. “Huge snake, incredibly venomous and petrifying gaze too if I remember correctly?” He looked over the woman before him. “You surprise me Ebony... How did you gain such a creature’s soul?”

A peel of glee left the Basilisk as Lucia pretty much demolished Ebony's wrapping paper, tossing it to the air and allowing it to fall upon the girls like glossy purple colored snow. Before she could play with the pretend snow more, the Cat had quickly gathered her into a tight hug and was suddenly presenting her with a gift too. Curiously, Delia opened the tube and played with it until the pink stick pushed up from its depths. Oh! She knew what this was! It was one of those things her guardian used to change the color of her lips. Not that she ever understood why anyone would want to change it, but nevertheless a gift was a gift. A gentle pat to the cheek was her silent means of gratitude once again.
Soon Vyn was following suit and opening her present as well. Though not with exactly the same gusto as Lucia had, but still with a bit of eagerness to her graceful movements. Delia willed her to speed up because she wanted her to see what she got from Ebony now! Finally the last of the wrapping gave way and revealed an elegant black choker with a single crystal rose hanging from it. As the shadow Raevan held it to the light of the fire, the bloom was seen to have a tint of pink in its glass petals.
"Yes, but she does not know this yet. Or at least...I don't think she does. Hard to tell with her being practically mute." Her eyes had shifted towards the gaggle of girls for a moment before drifting back to her companion for the evening. Shaking her violet locks with a sigh, Ebony leaned back in her seat again. "Fate I suppose. We were, me and Aphismet Delaran that is, he's Rivener's guardian. Have you met them?" She asked before realizing she'd deviated from her original line of thought. "Anyway, we were exploring some caves near his home and I got stuck in a crevice. We cracked through the floor too much not knowing it was brittle below and fell through to a secret cavern. There was mountains of treasure and gold everywhere. Actually, I think Aphismet still has the shield we used to escape the Basilisk's death gaze. Sorry, side tracked again. So yes, long story short, we managed to defeat it luckily and because I had my bottle with me, the soul just got sucked right in without meaning too. Fast forward several months and here we are."

The gift she had received was beautiful. The delicate sculpted glass twinkled in the flickering dancing light of the fire and the voluptuous velvet tie would contrast beautifully against her pale skin when she wore it! That fact that she already had another similar object from Xiu was irrelevant – they were both the same and yet utterly different and Vyn felt an instant attraction to the piece of jewellery. Turning her gaze from the intricate little gem she gave her host a warm look of thank you. She wanted to return the motion with a present of her own – the Shade household had given her two wonderful gifts now, but sadly she hadn’t come prepared – unlike Lucia – and she could find nothing on her person to give to the snake eyed girl. “I don’t know how to thank you.” She whispered, hastily putting the item to her neck and fumbling with the clasp at the back. She knew that Lucia would probably pass on the friendship necklace later on as per tradition, but for now the new chocker could take pride of place at her neck.
At the mention of Aphismet’s name Ethan’s brows rose in amusement. Aphismet? The mild mannered pleasant chef? Well – Ebony was certainly supplying him with surprise after surprise! However, he didn’t interrupt her recounting of the events and listened with rapt interest. When she was finished and all of the details of the heart racing had been recounted he clapped his hands, impressed by the woman’s story. Of course, he found it difficult to stomach the extravagant tale, but then again he didn’t doubt the truth either... “My, my, my.. Sounds like something out of an adventure tale.” He grinned, casting an eye back over the raevan and back to Ebony. “I hope she doesn’t give you any further troubles like her soul!”
Changing the topic of conversation he lifted his present and began removing the wrapping paper. “This reminds me – I haven’t had the chance to thank you on behalf of Vyn for that painting... Such a generous gift!” As he finished his thanks the paper fell away and his gift was revealed.

Vyn needn't worry about thanking them. Ebony was raised to be a generous, giving person at best and she was trying to pass those same values down to her ward. Cordelia on the other hand was happy they were happy with their presents and that was gift enough for her. When the Rose had trouble affixing the choker around her neck, the Basilisk quickly slipped in and took over for the older female. A light, yet slightly chilled pat to the delicate piece of velvet was placed after securing the neck piece. She smiled cheerfully and floated to 'sit' down next to the others before the fire. No one else seemed to be coming now, so they could get her full attention without too much interruption.
"Indeed, life is much stranger than fiction as they say." Ebony gave a light amused chuckle. "Honestly Cordelia is pretty calm and easy to care for. Though I probably should bite my tongue or something since there is still so much more to learn about the girl. As much as I want her to remain as sweet and innocent as she is now..." The Brit closed her eyes and sighed. "I know that's an impossibility. But I can still hope."
"Think nothing of it Ethan. My thanks is Vyn enjoying her gifts." She watched as the man began to finally unwrap the present Cordelia had given him earlier. A tug of anticipation was felt as the purple haired female wondered whether it was an appropriate enough gift. It had been somewhat hard to pick gifts since she had no idea who would show up, not to mention there were still plenty of Lab associates she hadn't meet yet. But luckily having meet Ethan prior she felt she could easily pick something he would like. Thus the man soon unveiled a designer tie swirling with hues of blue and gold. "I hope you like yours though."

Lucia sat there watching her friend open the gift. "So pretty!" she said as it glowed in the firelight. The choker looked nice on her neck, as Vyn placed it there with Delia's help.
"Oh!" she said suddenly remembering the point of wearing their necklace. Lucia deftly reached back and undid the clasp before pulling her hands down. She still grasped the two clasps and then locked them together. Slipping them into Vyn's hand, she smiled and said, "Remember, it's your turn."
The frei leaned back towards the fire and basked in the warmth. She laid the statue next to her. The party wasn't very eventful, but it was more pleasant than her own Halloween party. She'd have to try again, she thought. Maybe she could get Yuurei to throw her a birthday party in March.
"So what did you get for Christmas, Delia?" she asked with a smile.

When the basilisk’s firm fingers fiddled with the clasp at the back of her neck Vyn flinched slightly, uncomfortable with he relative stranger so close to her, however the moment of awkwardness quickly passed as the ornament was fixed in place at her throat and the snake drifted back to sitting by the warmth producing fire. Lucia then passed her the necklace, reminding her that it was her turn, and the rose sunk into a comfortable silence, content in the warmth listening to the other two whilst they conversed. Lucia was asking Cordelia what she had done for Christmas and the rose leaned in with interest. Since entering the modern house she had barely heard the grey eyed girl say a word besides the introduction of names.
Lifting the silken patterned tie he smiled. Yes, he did like it, he assured Ebony of this fact and held it up to his collar is a slightly corny attempt to see how it would look on him. It would probably best be matched with a pale grey suit – the blue and gold would compliment that style of business wear. “I’m afraid I don’t have anything to give you or your ward.” He paused, thinking how best to produce a non-material gift for the generous Brit. “Perhaps I can take you and Cordelia on a day trip at some point? As a form of thanks – it is only fair that I reciprocate your kindness.”

Suddenly the attention was back on Cordelia and she wasn't sure how to feel about that exactly. Usually people's questions towards her were pretty simplistic in nature, only needing perhaps a shake or nod of the head. Questions such as the one Lucia now posed were much more difficult for the snake to answer. They required the stringing of words she wasn't yet that familiar with.
Cordelia flicked her wings a few times in frustration and gave a sigh at her conversation impediment. But she wanted to answer the cat Raevan...somehow. A slender finger tapped light at her chin as she thought the best way to answer. When it hit her, the younger female spun up in excitement and quickly zoomed off towards the stairs. She stopped on the landing and beckoned to the girls to follow her. If they wanted to know what she'd gotten for Christmas then she'd just show them, simple as that.
"The color suits you." Ebony said with a smile as the businessman held the tie up to himself. "A trip sounds lovely. Cordelia needs to get out more. I don't much like her let's stay home mentality as of late. I realize she's a snake, but it's only part of what she is. It shouldn't dictate every single part of her life."
Suddenly the Brit was struck with a thought, "Oh my, Ethan I'm terribly sorry. Would you like something to eat? There's still some time before the ball drops if you'd like to get something. We have plenty seeing as I was expecting a much larger crowd." Her hand waved towards the dining room table with all the delectable dishes. "Hmm, I guess everyone had other plans tonight. That's all right though. It's nice to have at least you all to help bring in the new year with."

Lucia watched her Snake friend intently, waiting for a response. The young frei seemed to go through a myriad of emotions just from the six-worded question the Kitten had posed. Lucia, usually adept at understanding even non-verbal communication stared with intense eyes, blinking occasionally. She saw Delia's frustration, contemplation, an epiphany and sudden excitement as she flew up and towards the stairs leading to the second level of the Shade house.
Lucia smiled, a little saddened that she and her dark friend wouldn't be able to have any gossipy slumber parties anytime soon. But she floated up, with just as much enthusiasm as the first. She did a flip, head over ribbon and buckle, before bounding towards the stairs and the waiting frei. She slipped her hand in the crook of Delia's elbow. "Let's see!" she said with a bright smile.

Almost as mute as the snake raevan Vyn trailed behind the pair, her chaotic ribbon swirling gracefully as her rune propelled her up the stairs and after the two freis into Cordellia’s room. Cordellia’s refusal to speak perplexed the rose frei... If the girl could obviously understand the language that Vyn and Lucia were speaking and had even showed evidence of speaking names... Why did the smoky girl just drop the mime act and utilise the perfectly good voice box in her throat? It would most likely make things much easier. Then again, when the shadow thought back to the memories of her first few months of life in the dusty recesses of her mind she too had not spoken more than one or two select words. Why had that been? Mostly due to a lack of comfort in the company of others - Was it the same for Cordellia? She tilted her head in silent observation.... Perhaps... Either way, she should stop musing in the doorway of the room and enter to engage in what the snake would be showing her and Lucia.
Ethan nodded as the British woman spoke, at the mention of the food he drifted towards the tables she had gestured to. “I will take a plate, but I cannot promise to eat this entire feast!” He chortled, taking one of the paper plates on offer and serving himself. He had eaten a light dinner before leaving home – a simple salad scheduled into his routine by his dietician. He would have to eat sparsely to avoid a scolding from the stern woman... His indulgent feeding habits in restraints meant that what little food she could timetable him eating was important. Thus he only gave himself a slight helping of couscous and one or two little hors d'oeuvres.

Quickly she lead the girls to her room and banged the door wide open in her excitement. Momentarily, Cordelia examined the dent she'd left in the light green wall behind her door and bite her bottom lip. Eh, Ebby wasn't going to like that one bit. Most especially after all the work she'd put into getting the basilisk's room finished. Oh well! Her woman would just have to fix it and that would be that, no need to get all worked up about it. Wasn't like she'd destroyed the place after all. With the obvious grin of a child caught in a candy or toy store, Delia twirled around in the middle of her room, her wispy, black ribbon spiraling wildly as she did. She absolutely loved her room! Almost everything in it was green or at least a shade of it. Yet of course, Ebony thought wise and added bouts of black furniture to help balance things out. The smoke Raevan might have been able to look at an all green room all day and night, but others surely wouldn't be able to take it. Ebony herself most importantly. Slithering back, she gently took both females hands and lead them to her black Victorian styled bed. She then proceeded to move around her room, lightly touching certain objects and muttering a name or two. Most of the time it was Ebby of course. But then Delia stopped at her dresser and her grin grew ten fold. Carefully she opened the jewelry box on top of it and pulled out two things: a beautiful silver iced comb and a silver emerald bracelet. The latter was originally Ebony's, but the woman had pawned it off to Cordelia instead. Something the basilisk was ecstatic about. If the Brit couldn't accept it and appreciate it, Delia would. Floating back over so both Vyn and Lucia could get a good look at her precious baubles, the snake uttered one word or name rather. "Lazarus." She said it with pride and fondness in her smoky voice, a quick indication of her deep like for the fire Sigel and his presents. Ebony had decided to join the elder male in his dining, creating a small plate for herself as well. It wouldn't do to make him eat in front of her so and then make him feel bad for doing it. "Don't worry. I could use some leftovers anyway." She skipped telling him about her not being a very good cook and that the food here was actually catered. No reason to ruin his meal or anything. "I'll take the rest to a shelter tomorrow so it won't go to waste."When they were finished, she lead them back to their seats in the living room. Though the purple haired woman didn't particularly like the idea of eating in the room, she had no choice. The table was all taken up with her makeshift buffet and Ebony highly doubted Ethan would like eating at the counter or bar in the kitchen. Besides, she'd prepared herself for a whole lot of guests and had made peace with the messes that was sure to ensue. But luckily it was only the two of them eating now and she was certain nothing much of anything would happen to her white decor. "So Ethan, tell me about you. What have you and Vyn been up to since we last met?"

Lucia followed Delia to her room feeling like the only voice in a room of mutes. Which she kind of was. When she exclaimed excitedly to go see her snakey friend's Christmas haul, she was the only one who did so. Delia certainly had her own way of expressing things, with her animated movements and gesticulations. Vyn, however, seemed more withdrawn than she remembered. While the rose had been occasionally bold or even daring during their mini shopping spree, she was silent, observant and much more demure here. Maybe it was the strangeness of the house? Or maybe she didn't like Delia?
Either way it didn't matter. Lucia figured that since her two companions were silent, she'd just have to make up for the lack of noise! "Oh wow! Your room is so cool!!!" And it was. While purple had naturally been her favorite color, green was always something she was drawn to. Maybe it was how the purple hue of her rune changed the color to almost be a soft cyan. She looked around, a smile on her face as she said, "Ooooo" and "wicked!" and "bitchin'" and "cool" and "sweet!" at anything that struck her fancy.
Sitting on the snake's bed, it reminded her of her own, only not in the same way. Her bed was made of birch -- that white wood she saw in the ghost world. As Delia flitted around the room, the kitten leaned back, spun around so she was on her chest facing her searching friend, and curled, laying her head on a pillow as she watched. The frei could nap on almost a moment's notice, so it probably wasn't best to leave her there too long.
As Delia came back with the trinkets, she smiled widely. "Wow! That hair clip is really pretty!" The bracelet didn't stand out to the cat as something she really liked, so she was silent on the issue, but was sure to display her enthusiasm for the comb as brightly as possible. It was too quiet. "I love the color!" she said reaching out a hand to touch the fragile-looking hair clip. She grinned wide as a silence drifted over her. Lazarus. She knew that name. That was Pasha's friend. She had wanted to meet Lazarus. Maybe she would get to in the coming year. But for now Lucia was silent. It was fun to talk with someone. Not by herself. Cuddling up with the pillow, Lucia began to feel sleepy. Would she make it to midnight? It wouldn't matter. She had to figure out how to get home by herself. Or maybe she'd see if she could just...stay.right....there. Her eyelids slid closed as she laid sideways on the bed, completely comfortable snuggling with the soft pillow as she fell asleep.

After the initial excitement of Cordellia sharing her gifts with them Vyn sensed a distinct winding down of the atmosphere. So much so that Lucia quite literally went to sleep, curling up in a very catlike manner on the plush bed. The rose folded her hands in front of her and examined the gift Delia had received from Lazarus with more interest.. It was delicately crafted and a truly beautiful accessory. Commending it, almost regurgitating her feline friend’s exact words, she slumped into quietness. She didn’t dislike the snake per say, but the atmosphere tonight at her house wasn’t the most lively and as a result the rose had somewhat budded up and had reverted back to her old rather socially indifferent state.
Ethan glossed over what had occurred since meeting Ebony ever so long ago at the museum – recounting it really made the businessman stunned at how different his life really was with the addition of his raevan daughter. A year ago his response would’ve been filled with mundane business information, lists of famous or affluent associates that he had dined with... Not how he had been trapped in his own kitchen by a virus infected torso... He chuckled.
Getting up and murmuring to Cordellia that she was just going downstairs Vyn floated to the door and returned to the main section of the house where Ethan and Ebony were conversing.. Sighing she drifted to his side.. She was tired and wanted to go home – hopefully he would pick up on that and make an excuse then she could say farewell to the smokey frei and her mother and go to sleep in her comfortable familiar room at home.

Her black bone-like wings shifted ecstatically behind her half-formed back creating a low clicking sound as she hugged the fire Raevan's gifts close to her chest. A tender smile graced her dark lips, happy that the other girls approved of her most precious of trinkets. Carefully she slipped the bracelet on before readjusting her ponytail and placing the comb snug between her raven locks. Since she had them out it was only right the Frei should give them some time to assume their purposes. It couldn't be much fun being locked away in the dark like that.
Cordelia took a couple more minutes to look herself over in the mirror to be sure everything was in a good place before turning back to her companions. She was surprised to find Lucia sound asleep on her bed and Vyn missing. The rose's words had been so low while Delia was distracted with her treasures that the snake had missed them entirely. Though she was still young, Cordelia was fairly intelligent and figured that the black and red femme must have just gotten bored and went back downstairs.
She began to make her way back down as well, but stopped just inside the open door frame. Smoke colored orbs looked back to the cat girl sleeping on her bed. Should she wake her? Delia smiled and floated back to draw the covers over the other girl. There was no reason to rudely interrupt Lucia's sleep and Cordelia didn't mind sharing her bed. They'd wake her later and Ebony could take her home then. Floating back out and shutting the door as quietly as she could, Delia finally made her way back downstairs.
Ebony waited patiently for Ethan to answer her question, meanwhile cutting up a piece of turkey before placing it in her mouth and chewing slowly. After a few more times of this, she wondered if she'd asked the wrong thing as the elder man had yet to say anything. But then Ethan gave a chuckle of which she didn't understand. Raising a single brow, the British woman was just about to ask him what was so funny when Vyn floated back into the room.
Her own smoky eyes blinked at the rose's sudden appearance and wondered where the rest of the girls were, even leaning sideways to look past the shadow Frei. Was something wrong? She hoped the girl's hadn't gotten into a fight, but then if they had she and Ethan would have heard it. When Vyn sighed Ebony immediately understood what was up. Having Cordelia had forced the woman to focus more closely on body language as a means to effective communication between the two of them. So Ebony had heard that sigh before and knew that Vyn was bored and perhaps a bit tired.
Looking to a clock on top of the mantle of the fireplace, Ebony couldn't help chuckling herself now. The Raevans certainly were young. Then again they weren't use to late nights like she was. "I don't think we're going to make it to midnight Ethan."
Just then Cordelia joined them in the room, Ebony noticing the jewelry she wore and couldn't keep the small frown that graced her tan features. It wasn't that she didn't like Lazarus, she just hadn't gotten over the initial meeting of him and her Cordelia yet. Not to mention the second where she hadn't even been there to make sure nothing bad would happen. Nothing did, but still, he had been here alone with the basilisk and that just didn't sit well with the woman. "Cordelia, where is Lucia?"
Immediately the dark femme tilted her head and laid it on her hands in a sleeping gesture. Yup, Ebony was right about midnight. Perhaps she'd called Yuurei later and ask if it was okay for Lucia to just spend the night. She'd hate to wake the girl if she didn't have to. Placing her plate down, "I can wrap that plate up for you Ethan if Vyn wants to go. It is rather late. I probably should have thought about that when planning this party. Sorry, I'm still getting use to being a guardian."
