In which Elizabeth meets a Star...
Here. Take this and get as far as you can from here. Somewhere where even I can't find you....
And Elizabeth...?
I'm sorry it had to be this way...I love you, sweetheart. Good luck!
Elizabeth looked blankly up at the stars, replaying the last moment she had seen her mother in her mind. Run away...Yes. They had planned for weeks on end. In secret. But why had it had to come to this? Why did she have to be the black sheep? The one who would be scorned for whatever she did, whatever she became...Ah yes. The b***h. That was why.
She sighed, continuing to stare up into the heavens, not even shivering at the cold. It must have been the beginning of December now, right? She had been traveling on foot (save the money for food...) for the past few days. How close was she to Barton now? How much longer would her rations last? The girl sat up and looked her bag over. Blankets, matches, a lantern, water bottles, medicine, a first aid kid...Ah. The food. Another day's worth, at least.
Elizabeth sighed, getting out the blankets to curl up under the moonlight. Sleep always came quickly these days. She was exhausted from traveling, and such things provided more leg strength, so maybe...
...
What was that?
A bright light had flashed across the sky, and seemed to grow brighter as it drew closer, and closer, and....
...A star?
Elizabeth crawled over to the place where the piece of bright light had fallen, gazing into the small crater at the tiny thing. The star hopped around, not happy to be in the mud at all.
"H-Hello?" Elizabeth shyly asked, peering over the edge at it, face still neutral. On the inside, her heart was fluttering. This thing...Was really a star? The little thing jumped, surprised, but settled down, glowing happily at the girl. "You okay?" She asked next, watching it bounce. So it was. The little thing had nowhere to go, did it? She sat there for quite a while, the little thing jumping happily beside her, making the sounds of wind chimes as it did. Eventually, the girl fell asleep, and the tiny star hopped into her hair to do the same.
They could be away from home...
Together.
