Jericho laughed good humoredly at the picture she painted with her words. He could certainly imagine the miner's shock when a newly hatched queen waltzed into their living quarters.
"Well, with a dragon like Roheth, I'm sure this K'han would be worth meeting." Jericho said. "He must be a good person to attract such a kind dragon." he observed.
The candidate watched as Amelia loving stroked her dragons nose, idly wondering if he would have the same privelage some day. He certainly hoped so. It would be nice to have someone who always understood you, someone to always be there for you, to protect you, and to be able to do the same for that someone.
"The Search was...surprising." Jericho said with a chuckle. "Two dragonriders came to Tillek and walked amongst the people, just spent a day in the hold getting a look at everyone in their day to day lives. They must have another sense that normal people don't or something, because they came to my family, and one other boy's and told us that we would make good candidates, gave us the choice to come to the Weyr, or stay." Jericho still remembered the way his mind had reeled at the news. A chance to leave the craft hall and go to the Weyr...true, there would not be much use for his skills in boat building there, but still, a chance to impress a dragon wasn't somthing one passed up lightly.
In the end, though, he had decided to go, to get out from under his father's thumb, to try living life for himself instead of having his actions dictated to him. Yes, even if he didn't impress one of the magnificent dragons, he would still be glad that he had come.
"They gave us the afternoon to think about it and gather our things if we wanted too. And, well...here I am." he said, flashing her a shy smile and a shrug.

"I've hardly spoken to either, so I don't really know if he's as kind as he appeared to be or no... I'm inclined to think he is, however." She wondered briefly if she'd get a chance to speak to them, everyone was always so busy and her schedule was a little out of phase with the rest of the weyrlings.

"Oh that's how they do it?" She blinked, grinning, "I thought the dragons scouted prospective riders. I didn't know the riders themselves did the work. Hmn. I wonder what it's like to be a Searchrider - you get to travel all over the place." Amelia chuckled, "I probably won't find out, not with Sharath as my dragon. We've got too much to do here."

When they'd reached the entrance to the weyrling barracks, she paused, "Are you going to stay on if you don't Impress? I know many stay and many do go back. If you like the sea..."

Ahead of them, Sharath paraded through the relatively empty barracks as if she owned the place. And in a way she did, these were her peers and her subjects... the ones she would one day lead.

He nodded in agreement "I'm sure I'll run into them someday." he mused.
"And I believe, with Search, its a joint effort between dragon and rider. The riders walk through the hold, but their dragons give feedback. Obviously they're too big to walk through the hold as well." he said with an amused chuckle. "That's the impression I got, anyways."
Her question took him a little by surprise. what would happen if he didn't impress? He knew that candidates often simply stayed in the Weyr, waiting for another chance to impress, or taking up some other role instead of going back. Would he stay? Would he try to impress again? Probably. If he didn't impress after a couple of hatchings, he would probably give up. Whether he would stay within the Weyr or return to Tillek, though, was another question entirely.
"I...don't know. I haven't really been here long enough to decide I guess. I'm definitely growing to like it here...but I think I might miss working on ships as well...I guess it all just depends. It'll be awhile in any case." he said with a shrug

Amelia chuckled, "Indeed. It would be a difficult thing to fit a dragon into a people-sized building. Dragons do have a certain kind of sense about people... I wonder what it's like to Search a Candidate..." Musing, the goldrider turned down the appropriate hall and headed towards the Weyrling Barracks.

She nodded, "There's plenty of time for you to decide, you never know - you might Impress a dragon and return to a tropical Weyr anyway. I rather like it here, I won't leave unless Sharath really wants to." Smiling, she reached out to pat the queen's shoulder, knowing that Sharath would want to move if she thought it would better enable her to achieve her goals - a concept Amelia was glad she didn't have to consider for a while.

"A tropical Weyr would certainly be nice." Jericho mused thoughtfully. Tillek was warmer than High Reaches, but it still got cold in the winters. Supposedly, in the south, it was warm year round. "The dragons would sure enjoy the south, I'm sure. All that sun and warm sand." He rather liked the idea himself, especially with the slight n** in the air that pervaded the Weyr this time of year.
"Do queens often change Weyrs?" He asked, a little surprised at the thought. Granted, High Reaches already had a resident senior queen, so they could probably make do without Sharath and Amelia, but he had a feeling it might be frowned upon. Who was he to know, though? After all, he had just moved here to the Weyr recently.
"Would you want to leave High Reaches?" he added to his question. She seemed to have family here, lots of friends too, no doubt. She had grown up here, from what he had heard, so would that hold her back from wanting to leave? Or would she relish the chance to go somewhere new? He knew he had been happy to leave home, but not everyone had overbearing fathers like he did.

"Considering how many of them tend to sun themselves on the ledges above, I'm inclined to agree. Some still might find it too hot, though. I like the crisp chill of this Weyr in the Autumn and the snow in the Winter." She replied, amused.

"I don't know... I know High Reaches has been asking for queens a lot - but nobody's sent them to us. Maybe it's an 'as needed' thing? Queens are precious." Amelia glanced to Sharath then, before turning into the nearby archway, "These are the Weyrling Barracks. Sharath and I have our own weyr at the moment - way at the back."

Sharath, true to form, moved forward beyond them and lead the way through the halls between barracks, padding softly with her head held up high. As the gold moved, Amelia pursed her lips and shook her head, "I don't know, it's my home, after all. But everyone finds their own path at some point, right? You don't always stay with your parents. Besides..." She trailed off for a moment, considering how to phrase her next comment, "Sharath is too much of an alpha to settle for second best, I think."

"Does a lot of snow fall here?" he asked curiously. "We don't get much at home, just some flurries every so often." The idea of there being a lot of snow intrigued him, but at the same time, he had a feeling that having to wade through all that white stuff would be very tiresome and uncomfortable after the initial excitement wore off. Maybe the dragons could melt it out of the bowl by breathing fire...Well, maybe not. Something might catch on fire and that would definitely be a bad thing, no matter how convenient just melting the snow might be.
"They are." he said in agreement, looking at Sharath as well. She was still young, but already quite large, and her well oiled hide shone with a kind of warmth in the dying light of the sunset. "Without them, dragon kind would most likely die out eventually."
Taking his eyes from the golden queen, Jericho looked through the arch, curious as to what the Weyrling barracks looked like. Certainly much different from the candidate barracks, what with the need to accommodate young dragons too. He followed the pair through the halls, his long legs keeping up with the two females easily. He made sure to let Sharath lead the way, and walked beside her rider, looking over at her with his bright blue eyes as she spoke again.
"The path may be hard to see, but we all find it eventually." he mused "I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that my path would lead here, to the Weyr." Jericho said with a broad gesture "You might be surprised where you end up." He flashed the girl a grin, the white of his teeth standing out against his dark skin.

"It can. We're in the northern mountains, after all. If the clouds stay below the weyrbowl, though, we don't get much." She shrugged, obviously not concerned by the concept of a large amount of snow, "Most of my work occured under ground, where it tends to be warmer despite being winter."

Amelia laughed, nodding in agreement as they came upon hers and Sharath's weyr. It was larger then the rest, with a sleeping area and a bathing area in addition to the central commons. An echo of the larger, private weyrs, it was a luxury in comparison to the rest of the barracks, "Well, home sweet home. Ulysses' stash is somewhere over here..." Wandering in, she watched as Sharath padded over to the raised dais and settled in with a satisfied rumble. Wings tucked in to her side and tail curled around her sides, the gold looked pleased with herself as she stretched her hind feet out and watched the two.

Searching around the stone-hewn chest of drawers, she grinned when she found her flit's little hoard. "See? He's a treasure hoarder."

Jericho nodded at her words, chances were snow wasn't that big of a problem here or else surely she would have a tale or two to tell. As they entered the weyr, he looked around curiously, though not too closely, not wanting to seem nosy. It was large, as was necessary for a growing queen. He smiled slightly as said queen settled herself down on her dais, making herself comfortable.
When Amelia's voice reached his ears, Jericho turned and went to join her by the chest of drawers. "Aha, so the buried treasure has been discovered." he said with a low chuckle, looking at the little pile of bricka-brack. Various small, shiny objects that would catch a flit's attention sat in a little pile there. "Quite the collection." He said, smiling, amusement showing in his sea blue eyes.
He turned his gaze around the room once more, noting the attached bathroom "Wow, must be nice to have your own bath." he said with an appreciative raise of an eyebrow, thinking of how, as a candidate, he still had to share a bathing room with all the other boys, quite the noisy rabble. It was like a battle just to get clean in the evenings.

Rising, she nodded and dusted her trousers off as she glanced at the bath, "Ah, yeah. I guess... it's dragon-sized though so the only one who really enjoys it is Sharath. I'm half afraid I'll drown in it." She laughed softly as she wandered over to the room, its entrance a large arch so as to accomodate young golds.

The gold flit, having blinked between before, now suddenly reappeared before the goldrider with a chittered greeting and settled down on the sink looking pleased with herself. "Are there no private baths for the Candidates?" She'd never been one so she knew very little of the life of a prospective rider, "What's it like - being a Candidate?"

Jericho was taken a little off guard by her question until he remembered that she had never been a candidate, having impressed the gold from the audience.
"You didn't miss out on much, trust me." he said with a laugh "Mostly we attend classes with the other candidates where the candidate master teaches us about dragons, and basic dragon care. Those of us who weren't born here in the Weyr are also taught about life here, and how things work. The rest of is it just physical labor I suppose." He chuckled again. "You definitely didn't miss out on that part. Mostly we're given a lot of chores to keep us busy, and I assume, out of trouble. It's like being an apprentice all over again." he said with a slight grimace. He hadn't had to do so many mindless chores since he was first apprenticed to the ship Master and was given all the worst and most boring tasks to do until they figured he was reliable enough not to break things. He wasn't in any danger of getting into trouble, he was, after all, an adult, but he had to admit that it certainly did work wonders with the younger candidates.
"So, you lucked out, really." he said with a grin, watching as the little gold flit reappeared and landed on the sink, looking rather pleased with herself.

"Aye, I'll agree with you there - I did feel like an Apprentice again when I first started my catch-up." She smiled, nodding, "Though I have to admit that... if I were a Candidate, perhaps I'd have known more of my peers. Shards, even the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader had no idea who I was." Laughing more then complaining, the goldrider shrugged, "Now it's all training with how to run the Weyr and all that - so I think, perhaps, you're the lucky one at the moment. It can get very dull, learning how to manage bedding supply and food stores and disputes. I feel like a housewife-to-be."

Sitting down at her desk, polished stone instead of wood, she patted the other chair to invite him to sit down, "What do you think of when you think Dragonrider? I've grown up around them... so I don't really have an outside perspective. Apparently the holds aren't too fond of us?"

When Amelia sat down, Altaica winged her way over and immediately curled up on the woman's shoulders, cooing when a petting hand answered the action.

Jericho moved towards the desk when she gestured to the chair beside her and sat himself down in it, laughing "Well, when you say it like that, being a gold rider certainly does sound quite a lot less glamorous than most would lead you to believe. I must admit, I don't envy you the lessons. Then again, despite all the extra work in store for you, you've got someone who will always be there with you to help shoulder the load." Jericho pointed out, nodding towards Sharath.
He leaned back in the chair, tapping his chin with a long finger thoughtfully. "Well, I've never had anything against dragonriders, personally. I'd never even seen many until I came here. I think most people who have something against riders are the people in charge that have to pay our share to support the Weyrs. I don't know many people personally that outright dislike dragonriders. That's just the people I know though." he said with a shrug "I think most people still harbor a since of awe when it comes to dragons though. How could they not?" His eyes lit up as he grinned. "Who hasn't dreamed of impressing a dragon at some point in their life? Even if it was only as a child. I know I did. Didn't you?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:43 am

"I imagine there's perks to it, but I'm not really interested in fancy cosmetics and precious gems." She chuckled, "I'll just find out as we go along what all comes with the job... and yes, I'll not ever be alone. That, in and of itself, is comforting." Her gaze followed Jericho's to where Sharath was staring at them intently and laughed as the dragon huffed and nodded her head emphatically.

"So... it's the taxes that weigh on their minds, hmn?" She mused, tilting her head thoughtfully, "But.. without that support the Weyr would starve and there would be no dragons to fight Thread when it came." It seemed perfect logic to her... natural. Sighing, she shrugged - that was something she would have to deal with when it came time. For now, though, she had other lessons and people to meet. "I... did. Though I never expected to Impress. I'm an Excavator... I had no reason to be searched or to apply for Candidacy. So this is all... quite the change of pace if you will."

She smiled, "Sometimes I miss it, working with everyone down in the tunnels, but Sharath's too big now to be there without impeding the work and I don't want her or my comrades injured because of it."

"Once thread actually starts falling, I'm sure the majority of them will change their tunes rather quickly." he said with a bemused smile. "When it comes to supporting the Weyr's during times without thread, some people become a little bitter, because despite what dragons have done for Pern in the past, perhaps they feel that they don't do anything now to merit the holds feeding and supplying them." Jericho shrugged "There's really not much you can do about people like that."
He smiled at her as he settled back in his chair. He could understand how she felt about her work. He hadn't been here very long yet, but he was already beginning to miss the workshop he worked in at home. He missed working with the wood that one would day become massive sailing and fishing vessels, the large sheets of paper and straight edges he used to design new ships that were strong and faster than the ones before.
"I know what you mean. I miss working in the workshop at home. There's a certain kind of peace to be found amongst all that madness in people rushing here and there, and all the noise." He grinned reminescintly, lost in thought for a moment before reaching down into his pocket and pulling out his formerly pilfered timepiece. he flipped open the cover and raised his eyebrows at the time. It was considerably later than he had realized.
He looked at Amelia and smiled "It's a lot later than I realized, I should get back to the candidate barracks before I'm missed." he said with a grimace as he stood and stretched "It was nice meeting you, I'm sure I'll see you around again soon." he turned and sketched another bow to Sharath "It was very nice to meet you as well, gold Sharath."
