It's interesting to see this whole thing loop back round to where we started. I only figured we needed a different design for the Anachronism because people were mentioning a flying city was a bad idea ~ not only because it would be liable to crash, but because it'd be subject to near-constant winds and cold temperatures, and there would be a rather high risk of falling/being blown off. So, I figured they were right, and pondered what people would want instead...

What if a terrible weather event were to flip the city?

Well, if I may...
I read somewhere that the Anachronism is a free city, that is, that it's neutral for everyone, and both ruffians as well as fair folk can enjoy her streets. Well, with so many pirates and smugglers landing and taking off from the city, you'd think the city would have the latest in technology, as people smuggle everything from riches to stolen technology. Bargaining with a smuggler or pirate for a new boiler blueprint for a few months of stay on the city free of charge would mean the city would be the most technological marvel in the skies.

Whenever I think flying city, I think a step up from The Jetson's universe... sweatdrop Guess that's why it doesn't sound so attractive.

Nuciferal What if a terrible weather event were to flip the city? If you detect a storm coming you just gain altitude and fly above it. Hospitals would have rooms that could be pressurized just in case, and people would be warned to have oxygen masks ready beforehand.

Even if that were possible (may not be able to fly high enough, etc.) it doesn't sound very pleasant. D:

More pleasant than getting overturned. Really, every place you might choose to live on the planet has its particular hardships. Extreme hot weather. Extreme cold weather. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis.

Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis. The alternative I was thinking of was, say, a nice semi-tropical-esque island. Perhaps in the Mediterranean? Not too hot, not too cold, and no subject to severe wether like islands out in the ocean. Meanwhile; you have a nice, safe airship to adventure around the world in.

I would prefer something I could fly my airship to, especially if there would be a good place to "trade".

Elias Aerhart I would prefer something I could fly my airship to, especially if there would be a good place to "trade". That's what the island is there for, as well as to provide various things a flying city could never have ~ such as submarine laboratories and the like.

Don't throw Logic into my Fantasy! xDD I say Flying City. With the Mass of the City It'll have a hard time being knocked about, and if we Anchor it down It'll have even less of a chance of moving.

I'm an Engineer! I cannot help it! I enjoy my Steampunk with a heavy dose of real science.
Think of me as Verne with a healthy disdain for H. G. Wells' Cavorite.
The mass of the city? It's flying! You want it to have as little mass as possible. True, it'd have a fair amount of inertia that a storm would have to overcome, but this would be offset by its considerable surface area.
Personally, I'd rather like to have have a heavily & permanently anchored flying city/harbour ~ whether whatever it's anchored to can move or not is a different matter.
