`|Alexis Lowell|`

Lexi pulled her knees to her chest and cocked her head to the side as she starred out her open window. A light breeze blew fresh cool air into her stuffy dorm room. She looked at the stars, picking out the constellations behind the wispy night clouds. Lexi let out a long quivering breath, and jumped at bit at the siren whizzing past the campus, heading toward the forest. With a frown, Lexi slammed her window shut. She turned around on her bed, her back to the window. Warily, Lexi glanced at the window and sharply turned around as a shiver went down her spine. The only reason police cars went into the Blackback Forest was to investigate another giant dog attack. It wasn’t that she didn’t like dogs, puppies were absolutely adorable, but the thought of something big, vicious, and known to attack, living a mile away from where she lived, absolutely terrified her. She knew it was irrational but she couldn’t help be imagine that the next time she would look out her window a giant wolf-dog would be there, staring her down as its next meal.

Starting at the pull cord above her window, Lexi turned and drew the curtains to cover her dark windowpane. A sigh of relief filled her quiet room. Lexi crossed over to her desk, opened a draw and pulled out her iPod. She scanned over her music as she put the buds in her ear. Lexi glanced down at her calendar; a date highlighted in blue caught her eye.
‘Oh, crap. I forgot I was gonna go check if there was an open mic night at the bar in town tomorrow. Eh, Vince wouldn’t mind coming with me to that. I could use the moral support.’ Settling on soft Celtic music, Lexi curled up on her bed and pulled her stuffed polar bear close. She shut her eyes tight and took a deep breath, the smell of her old room and home calming her nerves as she curled up on her bed.

.:Damian Connell:.

Slowly, Damian leaned back and attempted to subtly increase the distance between the two of them, aware that his presence made the girl uncomfortable. Her voice was soft with a hint of exotic spice and very pleasing to the ear although the circumstances did not lend themselves to allow Damian to enjoy her voice. A mutilated body not twenty feet away, fresh blood, it was a wonder the rogue hadn’t attacked her as well. Her gaze dropped and Damian tracked her line of sight. It came to rest on her sketch pad, coal black marks on the page, in the shape of a wolf. Damian stifled a growl and backed away further as she flinched and immediately crumpled the paper. He watched it settle on the ground and flicked his eyes back the girl. She was captivated by the moon for brief moment; his heart went out to her as she shivered. The familiar, sadistic shiver that warned of the full moon. Her violet eyes captured his fleetingly before she shut them, trying to control . . . something. Damian searched her features frantically trying to pick out a clue as to what she was thinking, the clumsy crashing of brush behind them distracting and irking Damian slightly. Her eyes opened, reclaiming his vision, no longer soft violet but icy tundra blue.

Damian’s eyes went wide with shock, talons of fear sunk into his heart, his ears twitched back, his self-control rapidly dimensioning, his inner wolf fighting to get free. His entire being went rigid, focusing all his energy on the battle within him, desperately grappling for his human form to remain dominate. He could feel the deaf thunder on the edge of his senses, but just before the thunder could rumble four people entered the scene. ”Oh dear god!” one exclaimed seeing the body, ”How the hell did he beat us?” another commented. Damian seized the distraction and stood, a moving statue, emotionless strain etched on his face. ”Out of my way, make way, you can’t do anything until I check the corpse anyway.” a short man pushed his way through the gaggle of police men, obviously the coroner. Damian took quick strides towards the other officers.

”Well lookie, lookie who can’t handle a little blood.” a burly officer scoffed as Damian approached them. His eyes plastered to the ground Damian stopped at the side of the officer.
”Don’t think I didn’t hear your shock at the gore.” Damian growled ”The girl with the sketch pad called it in. If you remember how, Gardin, treat her with respect and kindness, not everyone sees the things we do.” he warned. The older officer, Gardin, became enraged at Damian’s remark. ”Don’t think I’ve forgotten how to handle a witness, Connell. I’ve got years on you kid.” Gardin hissed as he stormed toward the girl. Damian rushed toward his car, tremors ripping along skin. ’I just need to get to the other side of the forest.’ He gritted his teeth, willing his control to last just seconds longer, till he was clear of the people. Damian spotted his car, scanned to make sure he was alone and sprinted into the brush across the street, his eyes shifting from deep mahogany to vibrant amber-honey as he struggled to save his last uniform before he shifted.

Rhia looked after him, and suddenly felt herself wishing he wasn't leaving her. She blinked, and her eyes went back to their normal dark violet color, only now they had silver flecks within them, almost making them seem luminescent. She answered the questions that were asked of her truthfully and honestly, and when they decided to take her to the station, she put up no fight, knowing it was routine. She suppressed the shivers and feelings of dread and panic that passed through her at the mention of the old building, and simply stood, grabbing the sketch, to go where the officer took her. She tried to ignore the hand that was digging hard into her arm, though it became easier when she finally lost feeling in the appendage. What was the officers name again? Oh yes.... Gardin. She remembered him from the last time... she shivered again. He hadn't believed her then, nor had he liked her much then either. When he shoved her roughly into the back of a squad car, against the suggestions of his fellow officers, and against the express wishes of the paramedics, she simply ducked her head, though she hit it hard anyway, and hoped that she wouldn't have too many bruises. Obviously, he remembered her from the last time as well. She looked out the window, and wondered how long she'd be stuck at the station, and if they'd allow her to call her boss to warn him she wouldn't be in that night. When they reached the station, she looked out at the great old building, and felt a shiver of foreboding pass through her, as she was pulled roughly from the back of the car, and shoved bodily up the stairs. She tripped over the third to last steps, and cracked her knee, hard, against the top step, gasping softly with the pain, as her eyes watered. But no one said anything to neigh say the policeman, and she didn't want to bring anymore attention to herself. She was pushed into the building, and was told to sit and wait until they were ready to question her officially. So she sat, and prepared herself for a long wait, her knee throbbing painfully. She wondered, in a detached, numb sort of way, if it was broken. It wouldn't be the first time she had a broken bone due to the... treatment by an officer of the peace. A vivid memory flashed before her eyes once again, and she felt herself cringe into the hard metal seat of the station chair, before she caught herself, and straightened, gritting her teeth against the pain in her knee.

.:Damian Connell:.

Damian panted heavily as the last shards of pain ebbed away. Shifting on the full moon was always excruciating, and shifting around it was always abnormally painful as well. He stood in his full wolf form, his big puppy like ears swiveled to take in the forest symphony, his claret fur with ebony highlights puffed away from his body with a downy like texture, revealing how young he still was. His vibrant honey-amber eyes scanned his discarded uniform. The shirt seemed to still be intact, his pants also managed to endure the shift this time around, that was lucky. His shoes had also survived although his socks were not so lucky. Damian sighed as he spotted the scraps left of his boxers, undershirt and socks. Damian nudged the rest of his clothes into a pile and gingerly gripped them with his teeth and sprinted away from the flashing police lights.

It was good to run, to use his pent up energy. His body became less cluttered with tension and his mind had more space to breathe. After a few minutes Damian stopped, and dropped his uniform under a tree. He weaved in and out of a few trees and panted happily as he stretched his stiff limbs. Lying down, Damian rest his muzzle on his crossed fore paws and whined as he realized what he had done. He had run away, he had abandoned a frightened, uneasy girl who would turn in two days. Not only had he abandoned her, but he had left her in the care of the rudest officer on the force. He had also failed to look over the body before the coroner had come and pick up the scent of the rogue. Damian whined as he stood, gazing back to where the scene was. He had to go back, to check on the girl and to find out where the rogue was going. But if he came to close in his current state . . . he would be mistaken for the creature who was taking lives. Damian’s ears went flat with determination. He had to go back. Nipping up his clothes he darted back towards the scene.

Dropping his clothes under a tree on the opposite side of the road from the scene, Damian crept toward the edge of the brush. He scanned the road, fear causing knots to churn in his stomach. The problem with cars was that they all reeked of gas and asphalt, near impossible to distinguish from the road. Holding his breath, he dashed for it, making it safely past his car and into the dark brush. Damian stalked along the perimeter of the scene, careful to avoid the beams of the officer’s flashlights. The lustful scent of blood washed sultry over him. Damian circled around till he was close to the body. The coroner was finishing up, his gloves cloaked in ruby syrup. With great effort, Damian was able to ignore the alluring scent and scan over tattered body. Not many clues remained now that the coroner gave the okay to take it back to the lab. Disappointed, Damian began to turn to try and pick up the trail of the rogue, when Gardin caught his attention forcefully dragging the young werewolf and stuffing her in the back of his police car. Damian struggled to stifle a growl and took off in the brush, ware that one of the officers had hurt his presence. Damian raced on the forest floor taking the longest route he could to circle back to the fleeing police cars. He dashed across the road to his clothes and found his uniform. Panting heavily and feeling better from the run, Damian took a deep heaving breath and allowed the shattering mute thunder to spill back into his spine, claret fur evaporating off his pale skin, the receding ripples pulling him upright in the process. His teeth and face twisted with agony, Damian fell kneeling to the ground in his birthday suit.
he hissed into the blotted night. Throwing on his uniform Damian rushed into his car and followed suit to the police station. Pulling in, Damian watched as Gardin yanked and pushed the girl into the station, causing her to fall before she went through the doors. Damian growled as he made his way up the steps, his emotions and inner wolf in check thanks to his impromptu therapeutic run. He entered the building and watched as the girl sat in the chair, discomfort and pain written all over her face. His mahogany eyes burning with fury, Damian dissected the room in search of Gardin.

Rhia felt, rather than heard or saw, him enter the crowded room. She looked up, her eyes changed back to that icy blue once more, and she blinked. They were dark violet once more. Her brows drew together with worry, as she saw his stormy expression, and his searching eyes. Had she done something wrong, and not realized? No... he couldn't possibly be looking for her with that expression. She was certain she'd done everything as she was supposed to, and hadn't disturbed anything... She bit her lower lip, nervously, and couldn't help herself when she pulled her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them, her head down, trying to make herself as small as possible. She didn't say anything, she just kept her head down. She could hear muttered and whispered conversations, coming from everywhere. She didn't even notice that they were too far away for her to have heard... before that attack. It wasn't normal. But suddenly everything seemed so much louder. Too loud. She bit back the urge to whimper softly, not understanding where it came from, and simply locked her hands together, her knuckles turning white, and her fingers turning blue, with the tightness of her grip. She ignored the pain in her knee. It wasn't important. The only thing that was important to her right now, was her getting out of their and going home. She could hear Gardin on the other side of the squad room, loudly claiming that the attack was her fault, and that she'd probably done it herself, trying to convince his captain to let him detain her, in a private cell. Rhia shuddered at the thought, and cringed at the memory that came with it. She pushed it away, curling in on herself even more, her eyes closing as a wave of nausea rolled through her. She would not be sick. She would not show weakness. She wasn't a little kid anymore, and she sure as hell hadn't done anything wrong. She wouldn't be sick. She was stronger than that. The sweat that beaded on her brow, was the cold sweat of fear. A fear so powerful, it left an acrid taste in her mouth.

.:Damian Connell:.

Damian felt her emotions wash over him, and it pained him to push them aside. Right now, the only thing that mattered was to drive that arrogant man into the ground. Damian locked in on Gardin’s voice from the far side of squad room. Damian’s eyes narrowed as he b-lined to the boasting officer. ”But, Sir, she obviously killed the girl and used the giant wolf attack as an excuse! Gardin banged his fist on the desk. Captain Tuan narrowed his gaze at Gardin. ”You honestly expect me to believe that this girl committed a murder, distorted the body so she could blame a giant wolf, then called in the attack. Tuan’s eyebrow raised as he watched Gardin fiddle for a moment. ”But calling it in is the best way to throw off suspicion! Gardin argued. At this point Damian entered the conversation. ”Then what was the murder weapon? What was the motive for that reason? Do you see her right now Gardin? Why would she commit murder, and then call it in knowing she would be brought to the police station? No murder would risk that, no matter how clever they were.” Gardin turned red with furry while Tuan folded his hands. ”Connell makes an excellent point, Gardin.” he said as he looked over at the girl. ”Have you received the coroner’s report yet?” Tuan asked. Gardin looked down in frustrated defeat. ”Yes.” he whispered. ”And. What did he say? Tuan prodded. Gardin looked to the side as he answered. ”The coroner concluded that the marks on the body were consistent with that of a large breed of dog. Cause of death was bleeding out due to esophagus being ripped out of her throat.” Tuan leaned back in his chair. ”Then until the autopsy is complete, and any evidence of human fowl play is found, the girl is innocent and can be released once we are finished questioning her. You can both go back to your duties.” Damian tried to hold back a smirk and Gardin scowled and turned to leave. ”And Officer Gardin,” Tuan called after him ”I’m sure the coroner doesn’t need your help nor you standing over his shoulder.””Thank you Captain Tuan.” Damian bowed his head to his superior.

Gardin stalked out of the room and Damian followed him out, quickly stepping in his path.
”You leave her alone, Gardin. Don’t think I or any of the other officers ,didn’t see you being too rough with her on her way in.” Damian warned. Gardin shook with furry. ”I can handle being the only one to see the truth kid, but don’t think for a second that you can tell me what to do. The way I treat suspects is my business and don’t worry your pretty little head about me questioning her, she isn’t worth my time.” Gardin spat and shoulder checked Damian out of his way. Damian’s upper lip involuntarily curled up in the beginnings of a snarl. He breathed out heavily and turned his honey flecked mahogany eyes back to the girl who was now curled up into tight ball on her chair. Damian turned to one of the officers he knew was at the scene earlier. ”Hey, Brian, do you know if the girl has been seen by the paramedics yet?” Brian looked sleepily up at Damian. ”Huh? No, I don’t think she has.” Damian frowned as he looked over her closely. Her bottom lip seemed have an indent of her upper teeth temporarily etched into it, her grip wound around her knees was very tight, so tight that her fingers were loosing circulation. ’If she isn’t careful she could fracture something.’ Damian slowly crossed over to her, and was cautious to keep his distance. ”Can I get you anything? A glass of water or a cup of coffee? A band aid maybe? he said smoothly trying to lighten the mood.

Rhia flinched when she heard his voice, then looked up slowly, unable to believe how nice he was being. It was just so... odd. She frowned for a moment, before she shook her head. She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. She closed it, biting her lower lip again, and took a deep, slow, calming breath. She smiled tentatively at him, and shook her head. "No... no thank you... I'm... fine... I just... I need to call my boss... I'm late for work... and I don't think I'm going to make it in tonight... The... Officer that brought me here mentioned keeping me overnight for questioning..." she said softly, her voice hardly above a whisper. She shuddered at the thought. She looked down at herself, and realized how very tightly she was holding herself. It was almost as if she were afraid she was going to break into a million pieces. But she wasn't. She knew that. Didn't she? She slowly released her hands, and winced, at the pain the blood circulating through her fingers once more caused her. She looked at her hand, seeing the fast forming bruises. She sighed softly. She slowly uncurled from her ball, and took another deep breath as she folded her hands gently in her lap, sitting a little straighter. She looked cool and composed now. Nothing to show her fear, or any of her emotions. Except the eyes. If anyone knew her well, or at least were good at reading eyes, they would know exactly what terror she felt being in the police station, surrounded by cops. If anyone knew her well, they'd know why. But she'd never let anyone get that close to her. Not since she was a little girl.

Damian’s heart sank as she flinched away and seemed unhappy to have him speak to her. Her velvet voice was soothing to the ear, and Damian was somewhat disappointed at her request. He yearned for her to require more than a call, she was in obvious need of a medical attention, but he felt it pointless and overbearing to insist on that . . . for now. ”Of course you can call your boss. I’ll see if we can avoid holding you overnight, that doesn’t seem necessary at this juncture. If you like, I can show you to the phone now.” he offered softly taking a step back, impressed at her calm manner, but a pin of fright stuck his heart as he saw the terror in her eyes. Damian surveyed the room, phones ringing, officers chattering, yawning, and snoring, marks that their night shifts were almost over. All the noise was bothersome. It clicked that the stimulus would be more than bothersome to her; Damian had the unfortunate pleasure of being engulfed in the irksome symphony almost daily. He thought about who would be able to influence when she would be questioned, and his eyes locked on the Captain. At least Captain Tuan seemed willing to accept and accommodate the girl for the time being. Perhaps he would check on the coroner’s progress while she talked to her boss, Damian’s thoughts trailed off. It was strange that his alpha hadn’t checked in, and that he was the one to find the new lycan. . . Damian shook his head and turned his attention back to the seemingly composed girl who sat in front of him.

Rhia smiled softly, grateful. "Thank you.. I really do appreciate it." she said softly, standing. When her knee gave beneath her, she couldn't stop the whimper as it fell from her lips, as she fell to the ground at his feet, cracking her injured knee once again. She took a gasping breath, full of pain, and her eyes shut tight, as she tried to calm her racing heart, as the pain became nearly unbearable. But she'd had worse. She'd had so much worse. She wouldn't think on the pain. No. She'd breathe through it. She could do that. She'd stand. She would. She bit her lip, and pushed herself slowly to her feet, fighting past the wave of nausea that tried to make it impossible for her, because of the pain. She straightened slowly, shaking, though she didn't realize it, and looked at him. "Sorry... maybe... I should... go... to the hospital... once... I'm done here..." she murmured softly, as she tried to take another step, she nearly fell again, catching herself on a chair. She shook her head. "I'm sorry..." she whispered softly.

.:Damian Connell:.

Damian was still searching the faces in the room when he heard it, the thud of someone falling, the crack of a broken bone, and a soft whimper of pain. Damian turned on heel to see the injured girl starting to stand. His heart shattered as she apologized, sending pins and needles down his spine. He reached for her as she fell again, but she caught herself on the chair. ”Nathan!” he called out desperately. ”Pull the ambulance around! We need to go!” Nathan turned and looked at Damian, and looked down at the girl. ”Well yeah, but . . .” Nathan hesitated, turning away slightly. ”Nate!” Damian barked, eyes sharp and narrow. Nathan turned back to him, a mild mixture of shock and fear in his eyes. Damian stared him down, there was no time to waste, her injuries were worse than he had thought. Nathan fidgeted, sighed and ran out the back to collect his keys. A small smirk twitched on Damian’s lips. He may be the ‘youngest’ officer on the force, but he was defiantly the most intimidating, a trait that was slowly growing on him. Damian turn his amber flecked mahogany eyes back to the wobbling girl, they had exactly one minute and twenty-four seconds before the ambulance would be at the front of the station, it was then a six minute, forty-nine second drive to the nearest hospital given the roads were clear of traffic. ”You don’t need to apologize.” he cooed as he knelt beside her. ”Come on; we need to get you to a hospital.” he whispered. Damian heard the tires squeal to a stop outside the station, it was obvious she couldn’t walk, and a stretcher would take three minutes to get her on, five if she protested, drastically increasing the chance of Gardin trying to interfere.

’Yup, screw the stretcher.’ he thought briefly. Damian held his breath as he scooped up the girl in his arms, tiny shocks of lightning jolted through his body where his bare arm touched hers. Damian winced as he dashed out the door, skipping the last three steps and ignoring any complaints the girl might have. Nathan had just swung open the back of the ambulance when Damian jumped in with his injured guest. He gently laid her down on the gurney secured to the inside wall of the vehicle. ”You couldn’t wait for me to pull out the stretcher?” Nathan questioned, his voice thick and slow with confusion.”No, she needs to get medical attention as soon as possible. A stretcher would only have slowed us down. Come on, we’re almost ready to go.” Damian said as he finished strapping the girl in so she wouldn’t fly off the gurney with Nathan’s erratic driving. He turned around to see Nathan retreating around the corner of the ambulance as the furious Gardin stormed out of the station starring poison daggers at Damian. ”What do you think you’re doing? Gardin spat as he stepped toward the ambulance. Damian stepped to the edge of the truck bed placing his hands and feet on the four corners of the doorframe blocking Gardin from the girl with his body. ”I’m taking her to the hospital, something that should have happened before she even reached the station.” Damian struggled to cloak the venomous growl that saturated his words. Gardin advanced slowly. ”She can’t leave yet, she still has to be officially questioned.” Gardin hissed, his burly fists clenched tight. Damian sunk into a crouch, his ears pulling back as his eyes narrowed into slits.”She is going to the hospital.” the words were measured and authoritative. “She can be questioned there, standard procedure as you well know.” Damian jeered. Gardin’s advance stopped two steps shy of the ambulance, the driver side door snapped shut. A protective fiendish air grew around Damian, venomous spikes rippling down his spine. ”Watch your nose.”he mocked as he swung the doors shut. Damian secured the doors, and tapped the roof twice, signaling Nathan to step on the gas. Damian froze as they pulled away, Gardin cursed and headed inside the station calling for the Captain. Damian’s breathing was labored, willing the tremors to be ensnared and trapped in his spine. He was shocked at how territorial he had been seconds ago. ’She needs to be protected . . .’ was the only weak thought that ran through his head. She needed to be kept safe. Damian shook his head as he took his seat, back to back through a wall of steel with Nathan. ”You didn’t have to be so scary.” Nathan whispered under the blearing siren. Damian’s eyes darted along the floor.”You know Gardin gets under my skin. But still, I’m sorry.” his apology was meant for both Nathan and the girl. Damian gripped a cross bar of metal under his seat and squeezed it like a stress ball. The metal softly whined as his handed caused an indent to take shape. His head was a bit cooler now; hopefully he would be less rash when they reached the hospital. He didn’t know why he was charged with this girls safety, no one had ordered him to take on this task . . . but Damian knew that he had to do. She needed to be kept safe.

Rhia gasped softly, and curled in closer to Damien, when he picked her up and started running. Even though his hasty footfalls jarred her while she rested easily in his arms, it wasn't as bad as it would have been, had she been trying to walk. "Thank you.. I... thank you..." she said softly, burying her face in his neck, breathing deeply. She couldn't help but feel safer, as she smelled him. He smelled of soap, and trees and earth and... home. Rhia blinked and pulled away for a moment. Home? Where had that thought come from? She didn't even know this man. This... cop. Rhia was jerked again, and buried her face back in his neck, snuggling closer to him, trying to make herself as small as possible. When he strapped her in, she didn't know how she felt. His hands were so gentle. He was being so kind... and then she heard Gardin's voice, and she wished she could curl into a ball and disappear. But he made him go away. And then they were suddenly driving. So fast... she didn't know how she knew, but they were going really fast. When he apologized, she smiled tentatively at him, watching him, her eyes dark. She felt oddly drawn to him, and she didn't understand why. It was weird. "Gardin has never been a particularly... pleasant... cop..." murmured softly, her eyes closing, as a particularly sharp corner pulled a strap tight across her knee, making her want to groan in pain. She grit her teeth against it, and waited for the pain to dissipate to a low throbbing. "I'm sorry if I've caused you trouble..." she added softly.

.:Damian Connell:.

Damian couldn’t help but let out a solitary chuckle when she referred to herself as ‘trouble’. You are not trouble. Gardin is trouble, and that’s what I’m aiming to keep you out of.” Damian was a bit surprised at the honesty of his answer. Damian knew that he was drawn to protect her, but he wondered why the fragile creature next to him was able to lure the truth from his lips. He shook his head slightly, allowing his fairly shaggy hair to mask his eyes. The ambulance was filling with a pleasing scent. A tang of blossoms, smooth honey, hints of pine, all mixing together under the alluring bite of earthy perfume. Peeking out from under his shaggy bangs, Damian’s eyes scanned the girl’s pinned form, her knee pinched painfully from the sharp turn. Damian’s ears flick backward as he watched the way her knee interacted with the restraint. ’Her bones are starting to improperly mend themselves. It’s going to be excruciating to reset them if we don’t hurry, not to mention to try and explain it.’ The ambulance jerked to a stop and nearly sent Damian flying into the doors. He shook his head and turned to look through the half window at Nathan, annoyance around the edge of his pupils. ”Nate, call in for anyone but Gardin to come question her once the doctors look her over. I’ll bring her in and walkie you her room number.” Nathan nodded as he fiddled with the dials on his radio. Damian unlocked and swung the back doors of the vehicle open, then turned and gently released the restraints from the girl. ”Ready?” he sighed as he scooped her up bride style, lighting striking twice wherever their bare skin met one another. Damian shivered slightly as he tried to keep the sharp ripples of his inner wolf contained within his spine. He jumped down out the ambulance, and took quick but smooth steps to the back door of the hospital. He kicked through the doors and talked to the first nurse he could find. She motioned for him to follow, and obediently he did, careful to keep his gate even and not jostle the girl too much. They were taken in an elevator up to the fourth floor. ”Is there a reason you’re caring her?” the nurse asked more than perplexed. ”Wouldn’t a stretcher have worked better?” Damian closed his eyes annoyed. ”To get her the medical care she needs it was faster to carry her.” Damian said coolly. The elevator door opened and he followed the nurse to an empty room. ”You can lay her on the bed now.” Damian hesitated. ”I have a feeling that her leg may need x-rays.” he said looking for any excuse to keep her near, feeling that the only safe place for her was in his arms. ”Okay. But for that we will need to have her on the bed to bring her down to the machine. You can put her down now.” the nurse said pointedly. Damian whined softly, but did as he was told.

Rhia smiled up at him, feeling more at ease. Then they had arrived, and she was suddenly in his arms once more. She was content to rest her head on his shoulder, holding herself close to him, breathing in his calming scent. When the Nurse asked her questions, she said nothing, just happy to feel safe in his arms. Then she was wanting him to put her down, and she felt a sudden flash of panic. Her eyes widened, as he set her down, and she felt a soft whine building in her throat, which she pushed away, staying silent. Her eyes flicked around the room, panicked, her joints locking like a startled colt, as if she would bolt at any percieved threat or unfamiliar sound. She swallowed, with difficulty, and finally raised her eyes to his. "Thank you..." she said softly, her voice that soft, scared whisper once more. She looked at the nurse, who was writing something down on a clipboard, before turning back to him. "You must have... more important... things... to do..." she said softly, though in truth she wished he wouldn't leave her. She felt safer with him there. She didn't want him to go. If Rhia were already a full werewolf, she would know that part of the reason she felt so safe around him, was because he smelled of pack. He smelled of what every wolf would know of as home, and would feel safest with. In times of fear or panic, whenever a pack member has a problem that they don't know how to fix, if they can surround themselves with the scent of another pack member, or wolf, then they feel safe, protected. But Rhia didn't know that. All she knew was that she felt safe. She was safe, with him there with her, and she was indebted to him, because he protected her.

.:Damian Connell:.

Damian’s eyes narrowed at the nurse’s suggestion. The soft flutter of the girls voice calmed the edge on his nerve. Damian leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. ”She is my priority and it would violate my orders to leave her.” Yes, it was lie, no one from the station had given him orders to stay with the witness, but he couldn’t bring himself to abandon her, not again. The nurse would just have to deal with it and hell, she didn’t know his orders, it could be true . .

”Fine.” the nurse said with a sigh, walked out of the room and went to talk to a doctor. Damian let out a silent sigh and cocked his head to his right shoulder pushing on his walkie.
”Nathan, we’re in room 416, about to go for x-rays.” ”10-4. Captain Tuan is on his way for questioning.” Damian closed his eyes and released his walkie. The Captain was coming, either things were going in Damian’s favor, or things were going to get ugly for him down at the station. Damian sighed and turned to the now petrified girl laying on the hospital bed. Damian’s eyes softened as he looked at her. ”All this excitement and I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced.” he murmured. ”I’m Officer Damian Connell, and I think I owe you a phone call to your boss right?” he lightly teased, yearning to ease the panic that cloaked her deep eyes.

Rhia smiled up at him, calming, almost as soon as she'd been left alone with him. Then she heard the other man's voice saying the captain was coming. She shuddered, then shook her head. She would be fine. She would be. He wasn't leaving her. She looked up at him, her eyes soft, and full of her gratitude. "Rhiannon Tchaikovskii. And yes you do, but once he finds out I'm in the hospital, I'm sure he'd understand. And... if I have a release slip from here, I don't think it would really be necessary until tomorrow anymore... I like your name..." she said softly, biting her lower lip nervously. Was that too forward of her? "I'm surprised your captain won't let you simply question me. You're here already... and you were first on scene... but that's none of my business..." she said softly, watching him silently for a moment. She wished her were holding her again. An irrational wish, but one she felt nonetheless.
