"Oh, there's me, Mama, Papa, Ziazan, the baby twins, Kelly, and the puppies, Bert and Contessa," Rhian said, counting them off on her fingers. "Oh, and there's the baby on the way, too, Mama's pregnant again," she added, smiling at Kaosu softly.
"Miss Lee is Lauss-teacher's owner. . . Lauss-teacher's very, very special to me," she said, unable to keep the dreamy smile from spreading across her face - and unaware of the coalescing vapors of her Essence that were swirling around her slowly.

Kaosu did not seem very amused by her listing off of family. He really had no comparison for that kind of thing. He had no idea what it was like to have such a full household, and therefore did not see the attraction. "Sounds crowded to me..." he mused flatly. "Sounds like your owner gets knocked up a great deal, too. Hasn't she ever heard of contraception?"
Observing her sappy smile at the mention of Lauss, he figured out rather quickly that Elle was not the only female living in a romance. "And if you're not careful, you'll get knocked up, too,"

Rhian shrugged. "Mama likes having babies, and something about Papa being realyl, um, fertile I think was te word." She smiled at Kaosu, not at all bothered by the statement he made about her and Lauss. "Actually, Lauss and I want to have a baby, if we even can," she said softly, looking at the spot in front of her belly button that seemed the be swirling mist of blue-green Essence. What was this? She'd never seen anything like this before. . .

"How can one LIKE having babies?" Kao replied, still sounding extremely skeptical. "Isn't childbirth excruciatingly painful? And isn't caring for new borns a ridiculous amount of work?" His skepticism only multiplied when she mentioned children of her own. It twisted and mutated, evolving from skepticism into a darker, uglier emotion called horror.
So Essentics were simulating love. Even worse, they were acting on said love. Reproducing. To him that idea seemed just about as natural as two laptops hooking up and popping out a new computer. "If you can..." Kao repeated slowly, clearly VERY uncomfortable with the idea. Before he could even organize his thoughts properly, the situation grew worse.
Essence swirled in front of her. Here? Why? "Are you...? What are you..." He could not even form a clear question. This display was beyond him -nothing he had seen before.

Rhian shrugged at Kaosu's questioned about birth, picking up the horror but much more fascinated by the swirling Essence at her tummy-level. "Yeah, Mama and Papa like having babies," she said, almost-but-not-quite reaching a finger towards the Essence, taking a few steps off to the side out of the path, until she was relatively out of sight between two vardos. "And - and I don't know what's happening," she added, eyes wide and frightened, more of Kaosu's growing horror and disgust than what was happening to her.
The mist around her belly continued to swirl, almost seeming to coalesce into a shape a few times, before there was an almost snapping sensation from Rhian's Essence, and a big, heavy-looking rock fell to the ground, blue-green essence pooling from it and rising around it. The flutterby immediately scooped it up. "... A spark. . . . . . mine and Lauss-teacher's spark," she whispered, understanding fully for the first time how her Mama felt about little Bel and Sam. She had also completely forgotten Kaosu's presence for the moment.

They... like having babies. Kaosu would have commented on just how ridiculous that statement was, but he was too distracted by Rhian's Essence. He remained frozen where he stood, too wary to follow her as she stepped of the path. The redhead sensed he was frightening her, but considering the circumstances he did not care.
A Spark. She had just literally popped out a spark. A whirlwind of emotions he could not describe twisted through Kao's gut. As confused as he was, though, he could identity one of them clearly: disgust. Disgust that something so artificial could reproduce. Disgust that Essentics dared imitate one of the most intimate parts of life.
There was something else stirring in his chest, too. Something that shot through his system, electrifying him as he watched Rhian "naturally" assumed a motherly attitude -behavior not even his own mother had managed. Hate. That hate from his childhood revived, like a phoenix sprung from ashes. Why had he forgotten to hunt down Banning? Why had he forgotten that Essentics were a problem?
While he had been stuck angsting about that stupid boy, time had passed him by and the species was expanding. Something about that reality sent a malicious chill down his spine. He could not bring himself to comment. He did not know what to say. Any chances he might have had of befriending or finding companionship in Rhian died that very instant.
Ohhh boy. He did not like this one bit.

Rhian, though still awed by her spark, sensed Kaosu's change of mood immediately - and knew that she would never have a chance of reaching him or helping him again. Ever. It was out of her hands now, and she had the eerie feeling that she might have to consider herself lucky just to escape with her life. She watched Kaosu now with all the expression of a rabbit seeing the cat coming closer. Her entire body tensed, her antennae glow dimming to an absolute minimum - something within her letting her know that the highly visible shiny things were a danger right now.
"Goodbye, Kaosu," she said quietly, figuring that he wouldn't listen to her anyway. "Good luck with your life." Then she turned tail and fled like a bat out of hell to get herself and her new spark home before Kaosu decided to start offing her species (again) right here, right now.
