Spencer's Arrival
Emery's book had to be considered one of her most prized possessions. She often read it over and over, just seeing the new stories that cropped up in it. One couldn't say she was exactly emotional about it – it was more she felt very angry and upset when it was away from her, like when that girl knocked it out of her hands. It was a very special and very important item, and it was highly magical – Emery could tell that.
What she hadn't realized about it was just how magical it was – one day when attempting to read a story as it was forming at the end, something very bizarre happened. Her book had shook and glowed, before expelling a small dark blobular creature into Emery's lap. Unlike some kids, the girl wasn't even surprised – more confused. This creature – or something quite like it – was vaguely familiar. But Emery couldn't place where she knew it from at all!
“Hello there.” she greeted it quietly, noting the creature was immediately very terrified and making weird chirps, attempting to figure out where it had suddenly landed. It buried its small head in her skirts when her hand seemed to come towards it, however the creature seemed to relax some once Emery started to pet the creature. It was a shadow, something the girl could understand and instinctively know how to care for.
Marie and the boys were very confused when Emery came out of her room later, carrying the small creature cradled in her arms, book very awkwardly under one elbow as she brought the strange beast into her kitchen to make it some toast. Birds liked breadcrumbs, right? So why not toast?
“What's that, Em honey?” the woman asked, looking over at her daughter's new pet.
Emery glanced down at him for a moment before back up at her mother. “This is Spencer. He came from my book. He's going to have some toast. Please do not surprise him.” the statements were firm and blank, Emery's usual matter-of-fact mannerisms evident here as she carefully broke the toast she'd made into bits so some of them could be buttered or sugared for the creature to try out.
The brunette blinked down at her daughter before sighing and shrugging. “All right, but you're going to take care of him.”
