There was a sudden increase in noise as Tenma looked over to the kitchen. With the door opened slightly she could, more or less, hear one of the Nara women. Unfortunately, the girl couldn’t tell who was attempting to speak to her through the quite effective barrier. “No thank you,” Her voice slightly raised in order to be heard, “I believe I can manage but thank you for the advice.” At that she turned her attention back to the task at hand, noticing how illogical her previous method had been. A smile confirmed how imbecilic it had been and Tenma continued with her chore. Yes, a chore; it seemed all too odd because her grandparents had never allowed her to work unsupervised. It gave the child a sense of pride, but she caught herself knowing that it was only justified if she managed to properly finish the task.

Once Tenma had pulled herself from her thoughts it was as if the cups had been miraculously set. While lost in thought the child had acted unconsciously and set the table. She almost chuckled but pinched her arm to remind herself that she had yet to pour the tea in any but one of the cups. Then again, she was more than half way through the task at hand.

Picturesque was the word Tenma decided to use in describing the dining room. It seemed homely, if not foreign to her, and with the cups now in place it seemed all the more natural. All that was missing was the steam swirling from the lip of the cup. Half of her task was complete and all she had to do was fill the cups; simple, no? Hopefully this, like the last part after her fellow female’s advice had been, would end uneventfully. If it did Tenma could continue with the rest of the day, what little of it there was left, without a qualm: she had gained a new friend, infiltrated a high security compound, met the Hokage, and moved in with a new family – though it was probably a temporary setup. Once more as these thoughts swirled through her head Tenma moved without thinking too much and managed to maneuver to her first cup, with the teapot, and not a droplet of tea could be seen along the path she had taken. Once again her smile decided to surface as she elatedly poured another cup of tea.

With the cups in their appropriate places and multiple cups already poured Tenma felt quite comfortable with the task at hand. Now, of course, this was a chore that she had already failed multiple times and it was overly possible that it could happen again within the almost frighteningly near future. As these thoughts managed to tumble about her head the child no longer watched where she was walking and suddenly found her foot caught on something as she was attempting to walk forward. Unable to move back and unlatch her foot Tenma found her momentum suddenly taking her down; the teapot would now have to be her sole focus. As she met the floor, in an oddly quiet fashion at that, her hands cradled the pot but the spout hit her head, causing some of the heated liquid to lap up from its containment and land on the child’s head. Pushing herself up, Tenma felt the unpleasantly warm sensation seeping down into her hair as she set the pot on the table as not to risk another incident. Content that there was no physical way the container could slip off the edge the child turned her attention to the mild burns that could possibly stick if she wasn’t to clean herself up.

{{Damn...Ignore Roll, Resting Post crying }}

Upon standing Tenma retrieved her rag and tended to the liquid that had dribbled onto her face with her change in stance. Content that her face was adequately dried she turned her attention to the wet spot in her hair where the heated liquid still remained. Though it took her a little over a minute she was positive that she had managed to clean up every last drop, or at least as close to being humanly possible. With both her hair and her face cleaned the girl removed the black ribbon wrapped around her wrist and twisted the messy black strings into a less than perfect mass of a bun. Though it wasn’t very appealing as a fashion statement, it did serve its purpose. This had been the style that Tenma’s Aunt had once worn her hair, but she had never been discussed amongst the family. No, based on Tenma’s investigations through their attic at home, her Father had a younger sister who had been brutally murdered at age thirteen. The only reason Tenma had ever been interested in searching was when her grandfather snapped after seeing her hair up like it was. Yes, he had struck the girl, yelled and screamed, possibly broken a dish or two – Tenma couldn’t quite remember.

Trapped within memories of the past Tenma numbly travelled from placement to placement, pouring tea as she went. When had that incident happened? Possibly a year ago, maybe less; what she did remember vividly was the bruise that had stuck on her arm for a complete three weeks without fading or changing color and then, quite literally overnight, it had disappeared. The girl had always wondered what happened to the mark, but she wasn’t one to complain about the throbbing mass disappearing. Grandmother hadn’t known about the incident. No, she had been down at the river gathering water to boil for dinner while Tenma set the table. Just like today she had been pouring the tea. He had come in almost silently, all she had heard was the front door closing. Tenma told her grandmother that she had slipped and the tray she had been carrying slipped the dishes and they broke. As a punishment she wasn’t allowed out of the house for three days; being forced to remain inside was the ultimate form of torture for the child as she would daily go down to the river and swim, or sometimes she would simply let it lap at her feet. Suddenly she shook her head in an almost violent manner and brought her mind back to the present. Why was she remembering this particular incident? It was irrelevant as far as Tenma was concerned.

When Tenma pulled me mind back to the present she was pleasantly surprised to see that almost half of the cups were filled with steaming tea. It was nice to see but, as had happened almost every time before, when he confidence went up her performance went down. Perhaps, as long as she wasn’t truly comfortable with the task, her mind was more focused on the chore she had been sent to. And, if she was more focused, maybe she was less likely to mess up. This did seem like simple, nearly remedial, logic, but apparently Tenma had to work through it before she could actually set a pattern that might work. As the child continued to pour tea the room was beginning to fill with scents from the kitchen along with the light waft of hot tea that was rising in the air. It was a welcoming scent that Tenma found quite comforting. Perhaps this was what it was like to have a family around you, or maybe it was just a silly notion that she was blowing out of proportions.

Even with the sentimental thoughts swirling about her head the child was still managing to wander around and fill the cups with tea. Then again, on a normal day, she probably would have slapped herself for thinking like she was. It was concerning: maybe it was exhaustion from the exam…or perhaps there was something in the water that was causing her to go soft in the head. This seemed to be becoming a habit as of recent, but again she had to throw various thoughts and ideas far, far away from her conscious. It was ridiculous, she didn’t ever ponder such things and there was no need to do such now. No, she would be content with where she was but she also wouldn’t allow it to substitute for home.

Now that the teapot was lighter Tenma switched to a proper grip, with her free hand assuring the lid stayed on the pot. Hopefully with time and a little practice she would make this quite a simple task that she could refine into one of the proper arts like the women back home had done.

It had been so elegant; the way women would serve tea at formal occasions was breathtaking, even without actually taking part in the ceremony. Yet another memory forced its way into her vision as Tenma began to recall the one formal event her grandparents had hosted while she was home. Once they had sent her to bed all of the guests had arrived and Tenma snuck down into the kitchen. A young woman had served the tea with such confidence and grace that Tenma hadn’t realized it when her grandmother appeared behind her. She had been promptly drug off and locked in her room – up until that evening she didn’t even know there was a lock on the outside of her door. She had dreamt of being able to possess such beauty and grace herself, but her grandfather felt it was a waste of their time to attempt teaching her. After all, she was some sort of atrocity in his eyes.

Damn the memories! Lost in senseless longing she had managed to tilt the pot forward and spill on the table while she had been pretending to be one of the elegant ladies of Ame. Curse her inattentiveness and daydreaming! Once more she was forced to push away thoughts and images of times past, something that was beginning to try her patience. Tenma felt frustration in the pit of her stomach, knowing that she lacked vital control of her mind and its actions. She would have to recommence her daily meditations on her own if she wanted to regain control. Her grandfather had trained her in the matters of meditation quite explicitly, so theoretically she should be capable of reinstating a daily routine.

Yet another sigh, an expression which seemed to be increasing in frequency, escaped Tenma’s lips as she once more loosened the rag from her apron. There were still spots of moisture on the cloth from her previous mishaps, but it wouldn’t make a difference if it was only cleaning up more liquid. With careful hands the girl wiped down the table, lifting a couple of empty cups to retrieve tea that slipped beneath, until she was satisfied that it was dried. It was almost an obsession with her. Always had she been given the chance to pound away at a task until it was perfected, but now she would have to learn as she worked through everything that had been thrown over to her. It was an adjustment that had to be made and the child would take that first step by bringing back her meditations that she had so quickly neglected.

It seemed like, along with sighing, scolding herself was also becoming more and more of a habit. She was becoming her own grandfather. Once more she shook her head as she attempted to, yet again, shake the past from her head. Becoming centric on pouring the tea into the few cups left Tenma emptied her mind of just about everything. The clashing from the kitchen passed through her hollowed hears and the scents settled to the point she couldn’t smell them. Completely focused she once more filled a cup with the now only warm liquid. There were only three more to go and, if Tenma kept spilling, there wouldn’t me much tea left if any at all.

Indeed, just to make things more difficult and to push the risk of running out of tea all the further, Tenma managed to spill once again. This time, however, it wasn’t her fault. There had been a fly that was unnoticed flying around the room and it had landed on the spout. When the girl went to swat it away the pot had tilted enough for it to knock just a bit more tea out from the nozzle. Blast that stupid fly! Ah, she could see it now, when she was older and had a bit more conviction with her words Tenma could quite possibly end up swearing like a sailor. That was another note she would have to make: avoid swearing in order to thusly avoid future consequences. It was imbecilic to say the least and now the child was becoming irritated by the pestering fly which meant, after it took flight, she quickly killed it with a swift swat of her rag. And now the nuisance was deceased.

Taking a look at the rag there was the all too satisfying image of the massacred fly, which really didn’t count but the thought made her smile. Yes, only when frustrated with tea could the child be so easily amused by as insignificant as the pestering insect. Folding the expired body into the creases of the rag, Tenma “buried” the musca domestica, not to be thought of again, in order to return to cleaning up the minor mess. After mopping up the constantly cooling liquid the child returned to the tray. It was a lovely set and so far the child had simply managed to abuse it…oh well, at least none of the dishes were broken or chipped or scratched or simply obliterated.

With her pleasant gaze upon the unharmed cups the child moved her hand without noticing where it was going and bumped into the teapot. This wasn’t a high energy bump that would send the poor, unsuspecting, inanimate object sailing across the room and into the wall or anything of that short. However, it was enough to knock off the lid and create a small puddle on the table before the girl was able to right the container. Curse her spacious mind and absently wandering appendage! Lucky for her some of the tea actually landed in the lid and was able to be replaced in the pot. Though she kept on messing up Tenma attempted to contain her minor frustration long enough to make sure the pot was far enough away from her that it would be out of firing range while she cleaned yet another mess.

Content that the teapot was adequately out of the way she promptly mopped up the loose tea. It was frustrating; this was the sixth time she had to clean up a mess she had made in less than five minutes. Oh well, assumingly this was a manner of training and, if training was easy, then everyone else you be sannin level ninja - even the children taking remedial classes would be able to manage at least a jounnin level. With her conclusively failed attempt at a pep talk Tenma turned back to her teapot, swiping liquid off the side that had been resting on the table. She would learn, yes, she would have to. Tenma already knew that an absent mind had been her greatest downfall so far, but it didn’t seem as if she was acting on the knowledge. That was what she needed to do: act on what she knew.
