"No. No," he said, even more gruffly, apparently more horrified at the idea of a bathroom redecoration project than he was at anything else. "Keep your attention on the project. It's been pretty ******** disappointing, but so long as we use the rest of the subjects we can keep working at Barren Pines. You're safer there than you are anywhere else in Destiny goddamned City."

She was correct; Charonite didn't know if your secretary conned you into marriage every day in this new age. Well, Nova and Tisiphone had never goddamned tried this, just made him terrible coffee.

"You still have your... duty."

He'd been about to say orders, but she didn't quite have those any more. Anything she did she generally did at her own desire.

"But if any senshi show up at the campus, take them the ******** out. We don't have time for that s**t so late in the mission."

Really, it seemed that things had gone back to normal, but unfortunately she had given the overworked clawed machine of his mind time to think --

"Get a ring," he said casually. "I can't marry you, your Majesty, not until you're on your rightful throne again -- I'm not having it look as though I'm throwing a ******** coup by marrying the Queen before we get our goal. But get a ring."

This was unfairly unromantic.

"As you wish, my General-King." she said with a nod, trying out a new phrase for a change. It was strange, not using her normal 'sir' response, but then again, it had been a rather strange day, all in all. While it was apparent that she had some sort of hold over him (this Queen business was really starting to ******** rock), Ursula was not about to fool herself when it came to matters of the Negaverse. She had little to no experience when compared to that of her leader, and she would continue to respect and obey any command directed her way from him.

Apartment wise, no, Captain wise, always and forever.

She sighed briefly at the mention of the ring. It was probably for the best that she pick it out anyways; judging by his room decor, there was no telling what kind of Cracker Jack ring the man would come up with. As well, at least he was willing to admit to the engagement, (though Ursula would never have allowed it to remain a secret for long). This was a start. A start. She came close to mentioning how she could very well tell him when and where they would be married, but that would be an argument for another day.

"Fine, fine," She said with a hand wave, her focus still on her shopping list of items to fill the pantries with, "I'll find something, and if you're good, it won't be too expensive. But Prom. I expect a corsage now, Mr. Killingworth."

Corsage. Prom. These words held no meaning in his brain until he opened the files and stared at them blankly: in response, he made a fairly non-committal "Hm," noise, the kind of sound you made when there was no response to be had. Ursula should have felt fairly proud at how emphatically she had won the war.

She was also right about the ring. Either she would have had something so plain that people would have pitied her for her inevitable church-mouse wedding, or something so alarmingly crunchy with yellow gold and rocks that she would have had to 'lose' it. After getting it 'insured'. 'Heavily'.

He let the Mr. Killingworth slide, but only because he was still staring at the wall as though it would offer him comfort at this time.

She frowned at his lack of response. No witty retort? No growl or bark in return....not even a terse comment?

Her pad and notes were quickly forgotten, orange eyes glancing up to stare at him from the couch as the purple pen stilled between her fingers. He seemed distant. Cut off. Sure, she had won the victory only minutes earlier, but that confidence was quickly waning the longer she stared at his silent form just standing there, gazing at the wall as if he were waiting on it to speak to him.

And that's when the first wave of doubt came over her.

He doesn't want you, Ursula, he's only after Beryl.

She forcibly shoved the voice back into the depths of her mind. No, he'd reacted to her kisses, he'd been flustered at her when she was Ursula. Of course he liked Beryl, she was the ******** Queen of the Negaverse.

But that wasn't Ursula.

Was it?

Ursula was Beryl. Beryl was Ursula. They were one and the same now, not two inhabitants. So why did it bother her now, all of a sudden? She'd gotten his attention, what more could she want? He didn't have to love her, he just had to be with her... right?

She began to chew on the bottom of her lip, a nervous habit. The Captain hated this constant fluctuation with her confidence. One moment, she was on top of the ******** world, and the next, she was nothing. He would... he would be okay with all of this in the end, right? It wasn't just her doing this for herself?

Rising from the couch, she approached where he stood, pausing only when she was inches away from him. She opened her mouth to say something, but the words were lost, her expression unsure. It closed, and she looked away, her face shadowed by long orange bangs.

Charonite was not the best candidate for comforting anyone -- he just didn't know how; he didn't have it in him, he didn't have the file. For the longest time he'd equated needing comfort to weakness. It was disreputable. It was embarrassing. He'd never god damn needed it, and it was shameful in another person.

Along came Ursula.

He stood beside her -- not in front of her; that was too intimate -- beside her, facing the other wall as she faced the back of the kitchen. And then he reached out and tangled his hand in her long, citrus-orange hair, wrapping it around his wrist as though it was the only way that he really knew how to give affection, almost like a knee-jerk reaction. Something he didn't have to think about. He just touched that fistful of her hair, stroked over the breadth of it with his thumb, and then he let it go to cascade down her back; he said, "I have to go to the goddamned office," and then he walked away.

That was something, at least -- something. She'd always wanted more.

She hadn't expected him to do anything as she stood there, awkwardly just standing by his side, uncertain of what to say or do. She didn't know whether expressing her feelings was a wise course of action, or if she should continue on acting oblivious, shoving aside the inner turmoil that had surfaced itself.

Her eyes closed as she felt his hand running through her hair, the touch more gentle than a certain previous (and unfortunate) encounter. It was brief, but it was there. There was no hugs, no kisses, no warm arms to wrap around her and comforting whispers to soothe away her anxiety and worry. Affection was not expected from a General-King, especially not from one such as Charonite. It was a wonder how the poor man had survived such a roller coaster of events since her fuse with Beryl's soul only the day before. Both of them had gone through quite the ordeal, quite the change in their relationship. ********, they were engaged a day after their first kiss.

She smiled, only to have it fade as he spoke, and she felt his footsteps as he moved across the room towards the door. She stood there quietly, still, as he exited the room.

It took her a few moments to collect herself, to tell herself that she was just letting her emotions get the better of her, that she was a fool for expecting him to change so abruptly. That wasn't who Charonite was. That would not be the man she'd fallen in love with.

Shaking her head at her own foolishness, the smile returned, and she moved back towards the sound system. Raising one hand, she pressed the Play button and once again found herself returning to the distracting companionship of Lady Gaga's music.
