Ok, there seem to be a lot of misinformed people on here. Prefect Pitch is not a fiary tail thing, but some argue that you cannot aquire it. Perfect pitch is something that you are born with. You can tell if you have it because things that are not perfectly in pitch will bother you a lot, even if you know nothing about music (like if you play a slightly out of tune guitar it will sound like nails on a chalkboard). Those of us who were not born with it can only hope to develop relative pitch memory. In other words, we can train our ears and develop memories (such as remembering scale sounds, chord sounds etc.) and use them to figure out what someone with perfect pitch would already know naturally. People who are really advanced in relative pitch can come pretty close to having perfect pitch.

I saw an ad in a guitar magazine for CDs on Perfect Pitch
I think it exists, but I don't think you have to be born with it (in my opinion)

What exactly is perfect pitch?
PostPosted: Sun Aug 27, 2006 9:51 am

Perfect pitch is the ability to recognize a note, chord, or pitch when played. It is not to be confused with relative pitch, which is determining a note, chord, or pitch be comparing the interval between the unknown note and a known note that has just been heard.

I agree that perfect pitch can be learned. I also agree the sometimes people with really good relative pitch can almost seem to have perfect pitch.

you really have to be born with it or it's just pointless to try to get
I have relative pitch and I think you need at least that to be a real musician

I agree with the people saying you need to be born with it. You either have it or you don't. Even relative pitch I believe you need to be born with a certin amount of (... I don't know... Creativity?) to learn. I have mild Relative pitch. Like if you played me an E I could sing a G or a B to finnish off the chord. Or say you play a two note chord and told me one of the notes I think I could tell you the other one. But I couldn't hear any note and tell you exactly what it was, nor do I care (/would have noticed) if my guitar is tuned quater of a tone down by mistake.

Autistic people can have ammazing perfect pitch. I saw a program about this one pianist who was like, spectacular. They did a test where there was a full orchestra and each instrument played a note and he had to play the same note on the piano as the amounts of instruments he was listening to went up. So like it started with a violin but itself, then kept getting bigger and bigger making full chords. Eventually it got to over 10, so he started doing arpeggios, and nailed them all! There was another thing where he was on the train and telling the camara man what notes the engin was making. Really ammazing fotage.
