LILINA + BENJAMIN
Earlier that day Ben tried on his best suit. It was a bit shabby at best. The funeral was over, and he was on his way to his friend's old home. Brushing his lank hair back he thought of his friend... He was dead, and so had ended an ill-fated love story. Benjamin sighed this would be his fate too-they had always known it. Walking between the neatly rowed houses, he stopped in front of a particularly old looking two-storey. He removed the heavy key from his pocket and unlocked and opened the door. Walking in, he looked around the house of the man who had been a brother, a friend, a father to him. Sighing, he replaced the key in his pants pocket and pulled out a thick sealed envelope. Breaking the seal, he sat down to read the instructions he was to carry out.
I am gone and I know that none shall mourn me but you. To you I leave everything I own. Amongst these is a prized and feared possession. In my house, in a chest, there is a sealed tank. Open it. Therein lies all of me that is left and all that was good in her. I could not abide... this creation that was never meant to take shape. How could I? I could see what would have happened if we had loved and had a child. You'll know what to do with her. Please do what I could not.
Benjamin folded the paper and walked through the musty house. He found an antique chest under a cloth-draped table in the study. The lid creaked when he opened it. Lifting the lid to the sealed chamber, he looked down at two luminous green eyes looking up at him though a flood of water.
Her ashy hair swished around her in the liquid she was submerged in. Her green eyes blinked as she tried to accommodate herself to the light, dim as it was. Her pupils shrank painfully. She said something, but all that escaped her mouth was bubbles.
Ben unlocked the lid, and reached into the liquid to pull out the small form. Setting her down on the floor, he shook his arms to get of the water.
She blinked at him and spat out a mouthful of acrid water, coughing and breathing her first inhales of dry air, gasping and choking.
Ben thumped her back, "That's right. Cough it up. You'll feel better now." He looked at her closely. "You certainly look like them. What's your name?"
"Name?" she asked. No-one had ever spoken to her before- she knew how to speak from listening to others outside her tank, but some words had no meaning for her, such as any terms relating to herself, except one.
"Yes, your name. What did he call you when spoke to you?"
"He," she gasped. "He... said... Lily." She gasped, coughed, then sneezed.
Benjamin sat down for a moment. Quickly, he lied. "That's short for your real name Lilina."
"Lilina?" she asked. "Name? What... is..."
"A name is what you're called. Mine is Benjamin. I've come to take you home with me. Would you like that? And when you're old enough this place...it'll be yours."
"Benjamin..." Lilina struggled to her feet, wobbling. She had never stood under her own power before. Her face was still damp. She took a few steps and stumbled forward into a low table. She grabbed at the tablecloth but fell, sending everything that had been on the table on top of her. "Owch..."
Benjamin jumped up and lifted the small child up. "Are you okay?" His eyes held concern for her.
Lilina pushed up the hat that fell across her eyes. "Yes... I... am tired." She reached and touched Ben's hair. "You... look..."
Ben quickly interjected. "I look tired too." Hefting her up, he spoke again "Time to take you home. You're safe with me."
"This is," she looked around. "This is my home," she said.
"Not any more. You're home is with me."
"But..." she said and she began to be distressed. "Where is... where is he?"
"He's with her now." Benjamin smoothed her hair. "It's okay little one. He's happy now."
"I don't understand," she said and she shook her head.
Benjamin looked around the room to quickly find something to distract her. Picking up a crystal-like paperweight he gave it to her. "Look what I brought you!"
Lilina took it and turned it around. Light seemed to be trapped in it. She smiled. "Thank you," she said.
Queen Aeronwen smiled down at the child. "She's beautiful." She turned to a lilac coloured pony. "Nyx, what do you see?"
Nyx closed her eyes. "She is not a threat to us. Possibly an asset. Benjamin must raise her."
Queen Aeronwen bowed to her then nodded her head at Benjamin. "She may stay. Be blessed."
Benjamin nodded solemnly as he sat down waiting for Lilina to wake up.
Lilina rolled over in her sleep and woke up in shock, glancing around. She saw Ben and smiled. "It still surprises me when I can move so freely..."
Ben smiled down at her. "I'm sorry that you had to go through that. You're free here. You can roam around. The only one your age though is Neviah."
Lilina sat up. "So where is here?" She had become much more articulate in her short time out of her suspended state.
Benjamin laughed. "This is my home. We live in a cave at the base of the forest. Queen Aeronwen has lived her for ages, and has partially made/discovered a serious of networks in here. Basically, it's a maze in a mountain."
"Ooooh," said Lilina. "How do you see in a cave?"
"There's a bunch of candle holders on the wall. I was told that some sort of magic makes them never go out. Aeronwen found the place like that. We can't understand it, only that if you attach a light to the wall it glows."
"Wow!" cooed Lilina, genuinely impressed. "So... so when do I go home?"
Ben bit his lip for a moment. "I thought you'd like to stay with me. Don't you want this to be your home?"
"Yes, sure," said Lilina. "I like it here. But this isn't my home; I have to go back to my chamber. I don't even know why you opened it."
Benjamin's face contorted in rage for a moment, before he could smooth it out again. "He shouldn't' have done that. And you will never go back to it. You're free. You've missed out on a lot of things."
Lilina nodded. "Well that's nice, but I still live there. Is..." her lips pressed together. "Is he angry with me?" she whispered fearfully.
"No...He's gone. That's all."
"But... I don't understand," said Lilina. "Is he coming back?"
"No. He's gone forever." He didn't want to come right out and say it. "He's with her now."
"Oh," said Lilina in a very small voice. "Who is... her?"
Benjamin stared hard at the small one. She didn't know. "She's no one of consequence," he lied. "I'm what matters to you now. You need to meet the others. Are you ready?"
"Yes but, I don't understand," she said. She dragged her hat off and hugged it to her chest. "I still don't understand. Ben."
"I don't understand either. I really don't. I can't explain what's happening. But things will be different now on. I'll never hide anythign from you."
Lilina looked up at him sadly. "Will you go away too?"
"I'll never leave you. Sometimes I might have to go away for awhile, but I'll always let you know. I'll always come back."
Lilina rubbed her face and nodded. "Thank you," she said, knowing that it must have been important.
He tilted her chin up and wiped at her eyes. "Let's go meet the others, okay?"
Lilina took a deep breath. "Yeah. Okay..."
Benjamin led her deeper into the cave, where the voices grew louder. Taking a turn to the left, they came upon the meal room. Every head turned to watch them. He pointed to a beautiful white skinned pony with stains of blood dripping from her mouth. "This is Queen Aeronwen, our leader."
Aeronwen nodded "Welcome to our abode my dear. We are The Coven."
Pointing to the corner, he showed Lilina a lilac pony with long dark locks. "That's Nyx. She can see the future and that's-" He pointed to a bright green girl-"Wanda. She has mental strength and links." He pointed to the table were a boy reclined, "That's Azrael. He's an archangel and over there is Neviah and Abraxas. Neviah is good at mind games. Be careful. She plays dirty. And Abraxas makes things out of nothing for a short time. And that's the gang."
"Oh," said Lilina, gazing around. "Pleased to meet you..."
Neviah smirked nastily, about to say something.
"SILENCE!" Aeronwen's voice rang out. "There shall be none of that Neviah. Thank you."
Ben smiled down at her. "You'll be fine."
Lilina smiled and put her hat back on. "I know. I'm with you."
Benjamin smiled down at her as Abraxas walked over.
Kneeling, he smiled warmly at her. "You can call me Brax."
"That's not what Ben said," said Lilina. "Was he wrong?"
Abraxas looked confused. "Well my name is Abraxas, but Brax is a shortened name for me."
"Why is it shortened?" asked Lilina.
"Because it's...too long?"
"Okay," said Lilina. "I think... Ben, you said that there was a short name for me, didn't you?"
"Lily."
"Lily," repeated Lilina. "I... I think I like Lilina more. Lily sounds like... it belongs to someone else."
Abraxas smirked. "Every name belongs to someone else, that's why we have to make it our own."
Azrael rolled his eyes.
"Oh," said Lilina. "Okay."

DAIKIN + AMATERASU
“So that recovered her?’ asked Seto Kaiba.
“Yes, Onii-Sama.”
“Well then you have permanent custody and care of her.”
“WHAT????”
“Lower your voice, Daikin,” said Seto paternally. “You’re not yet big enough to shout me down. Is it any different to what Compassion did?”
“Compassion hides from me.”
“Yes but that is because you were a soulless shell.”
Daikin’s eyes went large. “Oh…”
“She doesn’t want to be responsible for stuffing you up.”
“Oh.”
“Amaterasu already has a soul so you can’t stuff her up. You go along and have fun,” said Seto with an end of discussion finality.
Daikin nodded and with a happy-go-lucky Amaterasu scampering around his knees he went off with her, his head lowered so they couldn’t see the tears rolling down his face.
Since then, Daikin grew to a handsome adult pony. He looked at the sky as Amaterasu played with the snapdragons and reminisced about their first meeting.
~~~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~
Daikin dipped his nose into the pond water to wash a scratch when he heard whispering behind him. He turned and saw no-one. He turned away again and there was rustling. “Okay whoever it is can come out because I don‘t want to play.”
“Doesn‘t that mean I shouldn‘t come out?”
“Huh?” asked Daikin- the bush had TALKED!
“Well if you don‘t want to play with me then I shouldn‘t come out because you‘ll yell at me for following you.”
“Well… okay please come out? I promise not to yell at you?” asked Daikin, his shyness offset by his curiosity.
“Well if you promise…” Amaterasu had walked out. “I‘m Amaterasu but you can call me Suki, Onii-San.”
“Okay, I‘m Daikin,” said Daikin. “Why were you following me?”
In answer, Amaterasu flew to encircle him with a hug. “I knew it! I knew it! Onii-Daikin!”
“Wha- get off me!” said Daikin. “What‘s wrong with you?”
Amaterasu let go and looked up at him with ill-concealed wonder. “Nothing is wrong, Onii-Daikin.”
“Why do you keep calling me your brother?”
“Because you are! You must be!”
“Why must I be?” asked Daikin slowly. Maybe this girl knew about his past!
“Because you look like me!”
“Oh,” said Daikin, put out, “is that all? Well then I can say with clarity that I‘m not related to you.”
Amaterasu backed away from him. “Not?”
“Yes.”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Oh… does that mean you don‘t like me?”
“Why would that mean I don‘t like you?”
“Ponies say I‘m too high maintenance.”
“Maintenance?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“I faint a lot,” said Amaterasu absently.
“That‘s not good. Why?”
“I starve.”
“WHAT??? You should eat then!”
“I eat sunlight but I use it up quick,” said Amaterasu. “Onii-Sama says I should grow out of it but…”
“Well I don‘t think fainting is good for your brain.”
“You‘d think not, hey?”
~~~~~~End Flashback~~~~~~
Daikin came to when Amaterasu, still a hyperactive baby, jumped on him. “Wake up Daikin! Sleep time is for nights!”
“Okay, okay,” said Daikin, slightly happy to have a sister but sort of sad that he had a child before his time.
Daikin wandered around… as always looking for Compassion. He was walking in the direction of the stream when he tripped over a big rock and fell heavily to the ground. Before he could start crying, he picked himself up and went to wash it off- Compassion didn’t like him crying.
He nearly fell in when he washed his knee and he stood up and continued on his way. He was going down a disused path when he saw a moving shadow. “Compassion?” he called. She didn’t answer. He went into the shade to see if it was her.
Instead he found a huddled shadow of a baby pony. He poked it and it barely had the strength to glow. “Amaterasu!” he hissed, recognising her as a baby from his herd.
She groaned pitifully. Daikin tried shaking her and then remembered that she was that pony who ate sunlight. There was no sun at the moment- in fact she was totally in the shade. She must have sat down or had a nap and the sun moved.
“Ahh…” he said and he sat away from her and his eyes unfocused to the sky. The world stopped and the clouds shifted away to let in watery sunlight. Amaterasu quivered as she drank it in, her skin began to glitter. Daikin grouped his energy and strengthened the sunlight and Amaterasu glowed with the brightness.
Daikin held it as long as he could before falling to the ground almost senseless, by which time Amaterasu was up looking around.
“Daikin!” she said as she went over to him. Sunlight shone out of her eyes as the clouds rolled over and he blinked in wonder. “What happened Onii-Daikin?”
“The sun shifted…”
Amaterasu cocked her head. “Should I get help?”
“No…”
“What’s wrong with you?”
“Just… just tired.”
“Why?”
“Why do you ask so many questions?” he asked dully. He sighed as that got no response except expectancy. “I moved… the clouds… for the sun.”
“You can do that?”
“Yes.”
“And it makes you sleepy?”
“Not sleepy, just tired.”
“Okay,” said Amaterasu. “Well I feel like a sleep too- it saves the brighty inside,” she said, using her word for the sun she stored. She curled up inside the hollow of Daikin’s chest.
“But I’m not… oh…” He said as she drifted off into a trance-like sleep to recoup and decided he should do the same. He watched the clouds waft around and stayed away just enough to stop the sun from being cut off. Amaterasu shifted and snorted occasionally. Her dark hair fell over her face and Daikin moved it so her cheek got more sun.

BRITTANIA + SETO + ZANOBI
Brittania gazed over the fields as they rippled underneath her. "That idiot demon," she hissed, noticing Zanobi behind her. She landed and he did also. "What do you want?" She asked irritably.
"What have you done with Jin?"
"Nothing. If you want him back you can have him."
Seto rose from under a hill, puffing slightly. "That's not good enough, Brittania."
"Ugh! Won't you all just get a freaking life" she howled.
Seto growled. "You listen here-"
Brittania glared and rose into the air again, flying far enough that she could see the water in the distance.
"I'm not going after her," said Zanobi. "She's livid."
"Fine," snapped Seto. "We'll walk."
Seto saw the pretty shell bounce around. "Eerinna might like that," he said quietly. "Zanobi, go and get that."
"I'm not your servant," hissed Zanobi.
"No, but I can't get it myself," growled Seto. And so an argument ensued.
"I'M NOT CHASING AFTER SOME STUPID SHELL!"
"YES YOU ARE BECAUSE I SAID SO!"
"YOU CHASE AFTER IT!"
"YOU!"
(Natalia) ”I‘m me again!” the merpony gasped and looked at the earth ponys gathered on the shore. “Oh, you must be land dwellers. Please, you must help me! My name is Natalia, I’m one of the merponys who live in the waters surrounding these lands...at least we lived peacefully there until recently. My people were captured by the Bone Sea Sorceress. She turned us into shells and we were scattered across the land. I was lucky enough to make it here but the others must be found and restored to their true forms as well. I can‘t get to them,” she indicated to her tail which kept her from traveling on land. “But you can. Please, the merponys must be rescued! Are there any among you who would help us?”
Brittania, who hadn't actually flown that far at all, heard the mer pony. "Hmmm," said Brittania. "Maybe this is just what Rage needs... Where is this... Bone Sea Sorceress?"
"Oh..." Said Seto, stopping short (he'd resorted to trying to catch the shell by himself). "Okay," he said.
"Okay? What are you, daft?" asked Zanobi.
"Maybe if we do something good, Jin will come back."
"Wuss," said Zanobi, but it was a good idea so he privately agreed.
(morticia) A dark merpony appears at the edge of the water. She looks scary as she smiles a cruel smile. “Hello, would-be heroes,” she smirks. “I understand that you seek some shells I lost. Trying to help the little merponys? Why? What have they ever done for you? Instead, why don’t you find the shells for me? I promise you will be paid handsomely for your efforts… ”
Brittania cocked her head. No she wouldn't be paid off. She looked at the water. She was half water dragon was she not? She slipped in and waited for the witch to stop talking to everyone else.
Seto scoffed. "I don't need any more money."
Zonobi rolled his eyes. "You don't get anything, do you?" he asked Seto.
"Why are these pretty trinkets so important to you?" asked Brittania- to herself or the witch, she wasn't certain. "That is all I ask in return for my services..."
(Morticia) The dark merpony eyed the few that had stepped forward, “Find the shells and bring them to me and you shall receive your just rewards. As for the rest of you…” she turned a cold gaze on the others. ”You are Fools!” the sorceress hissed slipping back into the water. “And you will pay dearly for crossing me…” (prompt) However, you’re noticing that the blue skies have suddenly turned to black and the shadows, they’re looking strange. Suddenly you hear a loud ROAR from the waters. You turn and see an enormous creature of darkness rising from where the witch disappeared. The leviathan, a sea monster of swirling shadows and smoke, looks down at you and it doesn’t look friendly…
Brittania glared. "Nothing." She rose from the water and shook out her mane. I may not have gotten what I wanted... but if I get what she wants, then she'll have to tell me thought Brittania. She grinned and then saw the leviathan. "Poor little cupcakes, the leviathan cannot harm a creature of air." She cackled and rose into the sky.
Seto followed her with his eyes. "I think she's acting strangely."
"You think?" said Zanobi. "Priorities, man. you're about to be eaten by a squid thing!"
Seto looked at Zanobi darkly. "And you care... so much. We're not running if that's what you want. We'll stand our ground."
"You... Are an idiot," said Zanobi, sighing.
"You suck, Kaiba," hissed Zanobi as he flew into the vortex to try and wreak some havoc.
Seto, left on land, found some bamboo and shredded it- using them like darts.
(miss)
"Damn it!" swore Zanobi from iside the vortex. "The bugger it me!"
"It bit you? and you're complaining? Grow a bunch, why don't you?" hissed Seto, reaching for more bamboo.
(hit)
Seto heard a satisfying scream from the monster. "Aim is perfect, as usual." He threw some more bamboo darts.
Zanobi grinned inside the vortex after hearing the monster scream. "Aim is perfect, as usual," he said and he launched into another round of kicks.
(miss)
(prompt) While some of your attacks are successful they only seem to make the monster angrier!
Now would be the time for a tactical retreat, but do you run back down to the beach or up to the cliffs?
Seto groaned. "Okay... Zanobi- if you're alive... or as alive as you can be," he called, "meet me at the cliffs"
Zanobi heard and scowled. "Al'right you big chicken!" He mumbled as he flew out; "I was winning too..."
(prompt) Your choice is made for you when the monster cuts off your escape to the beach. You quickly scramble up, climbing in to the cliffs that rise above the sea. The shadowy monster follows, taking swipes at any ponys that aren’t fast enough!
SETO + ZANOBI
Suddenly you find yourself at the edge of the cliff, trapped between the sheer drop to the rocks and churning waters below and the leviathan. The monster thinks he’s won. You have one more chance to get out of this mess in on piece, but do you wait for him to make the first move or spring forward and attack the monster!
Seto sighed. "I've never longed for a helicopter more... Okay- fighting it doesn't work- we'll have to wait for it to make a mistake."
"Oh you're a real freaking rocket scientist!" hissed Zanobi.
Seto turned to Zanobi. "Actually, I am."
(prompt) Your attacks haven’t done much so far, so this time you wait. The monster leaps forward and at the last second you leap out of the way!
Seto paused just before the beast attacked. "I have ominous feeling..." he said softly
"What?" spat Zanobi. "Oh! Jump!" he cried.
(miss)
Zanobi dragged Seto back up. "You are such a clutz!"
"You cared enough to help me up," said Seto.
"Yeah- coz your corpse is too heavy to drag back to your children!"
"Humph," said Seto and he regained his feet. "You aren't a very good liar."
"Whats that supposed to mean?"
(prompt)
The monster lunges past the ponys and falls over the edge of the cliff onto the rocks below where it seems to melt away into the water…
Whew, that was a close one!
Now that the monster is gone it seems as if the skies are turning a little bit brighter. And from the heights of the cliff you can see the Lake of Sparkles where the Lake Spirit dwells!
Well, what are you waiting for? You have some merponys to save!
You all rush to the lake, but once you arrive you’re faced with another problem, how do you get the Lake Spirit’s attention? Do you call out to her “Oh Mighty Spirit of the Lake…” or do you throw in an “offering“?
Seto grabs Yuna before she can fall. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"Come off it, Romeo, they're at the lake already!" growled Zanobi.
Seto creased his brow when they got there. "Oh spirit-"
Zanobi rolled his eyes and pushed Seto into the lake. "How's this for an offering? Hey Kaiba, every time you try and help someone, you usually end up all wet!"
Seto foundered in the water. "When I" *blurble* "Get you!" *blurble*
(prompt) Surprising as it may seem, throwing in an offering seems to have gotten the Lake Spirit’s attention…maybe not in a good way…
“Who disturbs my waters?” a booming voice demands as the spirit rises from the lake. “Oh,” she remarked frowning at the ponies. “It’s you again. What do you want this time?”
Seto coughed and sputtered. "I want to get out of this lake!"
Zanobi rolled his eyes. "If you can catch my hoof, I'll let you out."
"No chance!"
"Sure?"
"Yes!"
"Sure you're sure?"
"SHUT UP ZANOBI!"
(prompt) “Ah, I see,” she smiled. “You seek the merponys. But I wonder if any of you are fit to aid them. Do you know anything about the creatures of the sea? We’ll soon find out. Answer my questions to prove your worth and perhaps I’ll help you find the little, lost shells.
Seto dragged himself out of the lake with no help. "Humph. Questions. Fine. I'll answer them." He wrung water out of his mane.
"That was not so hard," said Seto, checking his nails.
"You actually knew those answer?" asked Zanobi in astonishment.
"I have daughters."
"Oh."
(prompt) Shell ect >.<
Seto blinked as the white shell was chucked at them. He looked at Zanobi. "It's not purple; Eerinna won't like it."
"Don't look at me. Isn't there supposed to be a pony inside or something?"
"Of course there isn't. It's just a shell."
"Then you won't mind if I take it?" asked Brittania- swooping down without waiting for an answer and taking the shell. "Ugh... it really is rather drab, isn't it?" she muttered to herself. Not in her taste at all. She flew away towards the sea- or so everyone guessed.
"Oh wait," mumbled Zanobi, rolling his eyes. "Stop, please we," his voice lowered to a whisper, "need that..."
Seto rolled his eyes. "You want to get it?"
"No, why bother, it's just a drab little shell."
"Well I think if we let her have it that makes us bad guys."
"Oh for the love of-"
"Yeah that means we're going after it."
Seto and Zanobi had thought about a plan in a half hearted way which was actually no half at all. It was just a seashell after all? Let the girl have it.
(prompt)
Morticia is desperately trying to heal herself, but the ponies she trapped seem to be getting farther and farther way from her hands. Some unknown land creatures seem to be helping them out. Curse them! She still had three shells she could get to, but she didn’t have enough power to get them from the land. She sensed evil amidst the large mass of ponies on the land. Perhaps she could use this to her advantage…
“Hello my darlings. I’m certain you know of me by now. I fear I am in need of your assistance. Aid me and I can give you anything you want…”
Brittania looked at the shell in her claws and turned towards teh voice. "Hmmm."
Brittania cocked her head. "This evil sorceress hasn't told me why I'm doing this!” she muttered angrily. "Until she does, This shell stays with me!" (prompt)
“Now my pretties! I need you to go after the shells! I shall reveal their locations to you! She reveals scenery to the evil ponies, showing a place high up in the mountains where the air is thin and it looks as though no pony has been.
The evil ponies dart off and the good ponies follow them. Does your good pony follow their trail to mountains in Dream Valley or the mountains where the old dragon lairs were?
Seto stood up finally. "Okay, she's probably gone back to the dragon lairs to hide the shell. We'll go that way."
Zanobi sighed. "Yadda yadda yadda."
(prompt)
If your ponies chose to go to the mountains where the old dragon lairs are at you get one point. +1
It’s a really long way to go to those mountains. You have three options: 1. Do your ponies head out immediately while the trail is hot or do they rest and then go? 2. Do you your ponies head out immediately, but take a short break at the lake of sparkles? 3. Do your ponies continuously work to reach the mountain, never pausing at all?
(Pick a number between 1 and 3, your number corresponds to what your ponies do. 1: 0pts, 2: 1pt, 3: 2pts.) +2
"It's a really long way to the dragon caves," said Zanobi snidely.
"So?" asked Seto.
"Just thinking your little legs might get tired..." Said Zanobi in a baby voice.
"Fine, if you're so worried, we'll rest at the lake of sparkles, you wuss."
Zanobi grumbled and went out to scout ahead.
(prompt)
If you stopped at the lake, you woke the lake spirit from her rest. She was a bit annoyed at you, but after some quick talking, you’ve gotten her calmed down. She decides she likes you and gives you a magical horseshoe and tells you it can only be used once.
Your good ponies, after much physical exhaustion, have decided to rest the night at the bottom of the mountain. Some are restless and wish to move on with the task at hand. If you have a horseshoe, do you use it?
Seto leaned down and bunkered up for sleep. He hoped his feeling of forboding was just because Zanobi was over there, watching him freakily. But he couldn't help feeling like a wad of stress was overtaking him. The horseshoe weighed heavily in his pocket.
Zanobi glared at Kaiba. That puny mortal- why did he get to keep the horseshoe? What does it do, anyway?
(prompt) The sun has risen and its time to move onward. You climb the mountain. The cold is all encompassing and it’s a tough climb, but you keep moving. After much exhaustion, the ponies with horseshoes wonder if this is the time to use the shoes. Do they put on the horseshoe now?
Seto had dreamer and he thought he knew what the horeshoe would do. It woudl be easy to put it on, but he knew that there were worse times ahead. Getting there is only half the journey- we still have to come back, He thought. "Keep up, Zanobi!"
"I'll keep up Zanobi, you," growled Zanobi, forced to walk under the wind currents that earthed him.
(prompt) If yes, you automatically get +2 points for leaping to the top. This gives you a head start on searching for the evil ponies running around. Bummer guys...
Finally, everyone gets to the top and you find the evil ponies with shells in their hands. Do you fight them and win?
Seto blinked. "Oh, come on, this is nuts."
Zanobi glared. "I am so full of you! I'm going to beat someone up!"
Seto cocked his head in mock concern. "Why? That time of the month?"
Seto blinked as Paluure came to his rescue. "Thanks, I guess, but I don't need any help." He attempted a roundhouse kick.
(miss) Zanobi cackled as the roundhouse kick misses and he swoops down to attack.
(miss)
Seto grinned as the flying attack misses. He tried one last time for a roundhouse kick.
Zanobi grumbled as the flying attack missed. He tried one last time to claw someone’s eye out.
(hit)
"Yes!" cried Zanobi. "I got a hit!"
"Yes!," cried Seto. "I got a hit! Wait a second, it was my roundhouse kick!"
"You idiot- It was my attack that landed!"
Zanobi and Seto were hit- the smalls of their backs, paralysing them temporarily from, the hips down after two massive blows from Nemesis. "This is all your fault, Kaiba-boy," spat Zanobi.
"No, It's your fault," growled Seto.
Seto braced himself on Zanobi's head and pushed himself up- trying to get his rear legs back in action.
"Watch where you're groping, Kaiba," snarled Zanobi.
"You'd like it if I were groping, wouldn't you," growled Seto and he finally regained his feet. "Come on," he said sparsely, offeing Zanobi his hoof without looking."
"I'd rather rot here!" spat Zanobi.
Seto shrugged then bent down and heaved Zanobi up wether he liked it or not. "You're welcome, ingrate."

BRITTANIA + SETO KAIBA
Seto Kaiba sat with his laptop in the dark. He worked on some algorithms, then realised he’d already done them. He sighed. He was not used to feeling lonely but he had gotten used to having a kiss await him at the end of a long day, someone to prattle on about their own (less important) day while he settled down for sleep. Someone to make him a nice coffee in the morning. He missed that. She’d been good to him. He’d gotten soft.
Before he realised it, he’d been sitting at his computer not doing anything for fifteen minutes. He sighed and shut it down- that was a mistake. He had a picture of Kala and his kids as a background for his icons and it showed as the computer shut off. Seto scowled at how childish it was and shut the laptop and pushed it away. He was momentarily distracted by the sound and wind vibrations of beating wings. He looked up. “Brittania, what are you doing in the herd’s grounds?”
Brittania- for it was she- curled her wings in, showing Kaiba her good side, and sat down with her tail wrapped around here. “I’m part of the Matchstick Herd too.”
Seto snorted. “’Matchstick Herd- whoever started such a ridiculous name?”
“I don’t know,” said Brittania softly. “You look sad, Kaiba. Why?”
Kaiba’s gaze hardened, “I do not look sad.”
Brittania smiled. “If that’s what you want me to think, I’ll think it.”
Seto looked at her a moment longer and turned away. “What do you want?”
Brittania lowered her gaze, remembering that she was not supposed to be above him… for now. “I suppose… I got lonely.”
Seto’s eyes wandered. What? Isn’t that- no, can’t be. Coincidence. “You have Jin Kyoshi up there.”
Brittania’s head shifted forlornly and her mane slowly, then with speed, fell into her eyes. “He won’t talk to me.” She looked up- quickly meeting his gaze and then dropping it.
Before he could lose interest and counter with a snide comment, she continued; “He won’t forgive me for the event.”
“It was your choice to help the wrong side,” said Seto, but not as nastily as he could have. He felt… pity? No- why would Seto Kaiba feel pity! No! It’s not! Maybe it’s… comradeship? She’s lonely too.
Brittania stood in one fluid motion and converged on Seto before he could do more than flinch away. She lowered her head to be close to his and met his blue gaze with hers in a show of timidity. “Don’t you know?” she whispered. “Don’t you know why I did it?” Seto couldn’t speak for a moment- the shock of being so close to- and breathing her scent- no! “I wanted to be… near you… Se..to…” She said, lowering her eyes as she said his name hesitantly. She felt a black illness bubbling inside her. She was lying. She hated him- she hated Seto Kaiba! Kill him! Kill him!
“You’re lying.”
Brittania gasped and met his eyes again- and again she pulled away, taking a few steps backward and dropping to her knees. “No.” She breathed. “No- why would I lie? You- you hate me anyway,” she dropped her head. “You hate me like everyone else does. But I want you- I want you to know,” she approached him again and seized his hoof, holding it near enough to her cheek to feel the warmth. “That I don’t hate you. I have… always admired you-”
Seto wrenched his hoof back. “Yes, you like me so much because I broke your wing.”
Brittania let out a (theatrical) dry sob. “You know I’m attracted to power- it is my flaw- but isn’t that good? I mean for you? You are stronger than I am. You deserve my,” she paused, trying to think of the word she meant. “Devotion.”
It is hard. Very hard. For a lonely man to turn down a woman who radiates strength and youth and beauty who happens to be throwing herself at him. And be he anything else, Seto Kaiba was still a man. He felt a hot seed of desire enter his blood. He closed his eyes to try and block it out.
Brittania’s lip curled when she saw him fight her. b*****d! She twisted around and grabbed his face between her hooves and kissed him. His eyes flicked open and he tried- unsuccessfully- to force her off- before he just… gave in. He relaxed and tentatively held her in his arms. Brittania grinned. Finally!
The need saturated his blood- the need for closeness. For a warm body against his own, to be needed by someone. To be selfish and take when it was also a gift.
Brittania felt ill. She wanted to purge herself- but she wasn’t clean. She hadn’t been clean for a long time. This was just a new stain. She let herself go with it. She thought of why she was doing it- for Jin- no! The thought sickened her. When he found out what she’d done… she gasped in horror- but Seto did not notice. She didn’t want this- no she didn’t- but it was too late…
BRITTANIA + JIN KYOSHI + SETO KAIBA
Seto winced as he shrugged on his jacket. Three red lines had already bled through his shirt to make a darker shade of black. Brittania was free with her claws. Wrong, wrong. It felt so wrong. His mouth worked as he tried to form his thoughts. He realised that any forming couldn’t be done now. He retrieved his laptop and walked out, his left flank was painfully stiff and needed working out,
Brittania kept her eyes closed in a mockery of sleep until Kaiba had left. She sat up and pulled herself in- making a smaller target. She wanted to cry, to scream but she knew she couldn’t. She was worthless and the only person who saw worth in her-something she hadn’t seen in a long time- now would never see it again. She felt dirty- his touch still burned her skin. Her flesh crawled. She couldn’t help re-living it. She hated it because… on some level she had enjoyed it.
She fell back, then flinched as she felt something hard. “A… pendant?” she said. She snapped open the necklace pendant with the front of a card. “Oh.” Inside was a torn picture of Mokuba. She hadn’t actually thought that this might hurt Kaiba. Not that she cared. At all. No. She pulled the pendant over her head. She’d need this to prove it to Jin… Poor Jin.
She looked at her golden nails. They were crusted with dried blood. She licked them clean. Then she fixed her hair. So undignified. She rose to her feet and tried not to gag as a waft of scent reached her nose- Kaiba’s scent. No time for a bath.
She took off- relishing for a simple moment the feeling of the wind before the memory struck her again and she sobbed dryly- this time a real one. She collapsed onto the ledge outside her cave and went inside. Again, she didn’t notice Jin Kyoshi.
His eyes were red with tiredness. He’d waited up for Brittania. “Brittania- where have you been?” he asked.
“I don’t have to explain myself to you.” She knew it had to be done- it had to- it must be done. He had to know. He had to find out. But the will deserted her.
“At least you’re back now,” said Jin brightly. “Are you okay?”
“Ah…”
Jin blinked slowly and edged over to her. “Are you okay, Brittania?”
Brittania swallowed and remembered she was wearing Kaiba’s locket- it burned her neck where it lay. She turned away, to hide it. She couldn’t do it to him. Not to Jin. It was too harsh. She was sorry. She didn’t want to have done it. She’d have to find another way. Let’s just forget it…
Jin wrinkled his nose. “Brittania are you really okay? What’s that smell?”
As soon as I wash his scent off… “I’m fine, leave it alone, leave me alone,” she said unhappily.
Jin’s mouth worked in concern. “O… okay Brittania. If you need me… even, even if you don’t… I’m- just over there,” he said, pointing to the cave entrance. “Right?” he asked, turning away from her with one eye still glued to her green form. “Kay?”
“Just go!”
“Gone! I’m gone,” said Jin hopping and flapping away.
Brittania ripped off the loop and flung it into a corner and curled up. Then she thought better of it. She retrieved it and took it deep into the cave system. She hid it in the deepest, darkest cavern and laid it in a cranny. This was also the place where she had talked to Rage. She talked to Rage again.
“This was a stupid thing to do!”
“Well, was a good idea at the time- you just chickened out.”
“Well I thought better of it! Your thoughts are stupid! I don’t want this anymore!”
“Fine.” Rage sounded like it shrugged. “Don’t call me next time you ******** up your life.”
“No reason to use bad language, Rage! Rage?” Rage was gone and all that was left was Brittania. With Brittania’s problems.
BRITTANIA + JIN KYOSHI
The plan was to never think or talk about the Seto thing again. The plan was not working.
Firstly, Brittania was trying to talk to Jin about… well leaving, and he was too thick to actually notice. He was just being so nice and kind… and God knew whatever he did with all the metal he’d taken from inside these new caves. He stayed for hours in his sorry excuse for a cave with… Brittania didn’t know- some huge block of metal… just making... something.
And as for Brittania… she wasn’t doing too well. Mentally, all she could do was think about that night- when she closed her eyes she could feel him-touching her and she felt nauseated. Then when she had her eyes open, she actually felt nauseated. She was famished for the strangest things- like pork. Pork? When had she ever eaten pork before? But she wanted it! Raw, cooked, kabobbed- she NEEDED it! Jin was really good about it, though. He was getting her whatever she wanted- obviously to make up for his slip-up a few weeks back. But it just made Brittania feel guiltier.
Well as for Jin Kyoshi- he knew exactly what Brittania was doing. Or thought he did, which for a teenage male is everything. He knew Brittania was trying to push him away. He knew it was because he was too young. He knew that he has to do something impressive to prove that he loved her more than the sky and the ground and more than the feeling of the air in his wings and his face. So he sat in his cave, making her something really… well to tell the truth even he didn’t know what it was. He debated on a sculpture of her- without the scars, but then he thought it might upset her. Then he thought, maybe a nice sandpit or a chair, but them… no. Then he thought- what about… well girls like pretty things? Pretty things are… well sometimes antiques? Antiquey stuff seemed a good bet, then? So… metal and antique? Well girls like looking at themselves… metal was reflective… what about a mirror? But it would have to be one whopping mirror, for all the metal he had. Why not one of those old posh study table desk things? The ones with the mirrors? Okay- make one of those.
(Looks like this, for reference: )
So he set about making one of those, and getting Brittania pork. Lots of it. She was eating loads more than usual lately… and, not to sound like a typical male, she was putting on a bit of weight… which was weird because her face looked gaunt and haggard and the scales were greyish and bagging. He didn’t want to say she was less beautiful… but she looked… yeah let’s not finish that sentence. Jin wouldn’t forgive himself if he finished that sentence. He worried about her.
Brittania, however, didn’t notice her bagging skin. She didn’t leave the cave for fear of running into Seto Kaiba and him… just being all… looking at her! With his eyes that saw her… She shuddered.
Seto Kaiba, by the way, felt terrible. He felt like he had betrayed his children and his family. He could barely get up in the morning. And when Mokuba found out that Seto had lost his locket… well, let’s just say it is definitely something when Seto Kaiba cringes at the anger in his baby brother.
Seto could still feel her scales on his skin. He was not repulsed by the memory, only deeply saddened and almost betrayed by it. He couldn’t bear to look at his children, and when Izanami turned up with her new babies he nearly wept with the injustice of it all. He was having one of these episodes when Brittania suddenly choked on the pork kabob she was eating.
She’d figured out why she liked pork suddenly. She’d figured out why she’d gotten fat- oh even she could tell she was fat when she couldn’t easily fit through her own tunnels!
She was pregnant.
SETO KAIBA + JIN KYOSHI
Seto was asleep when the first blow landed. He woke with a start and found that his locked had been pegged at him and the sharp edge and scraped skin off his forehead. He picked it up. “Wh-”
“I’ll be asking the questions!” screeched a very wet looking Jin. His hair was slicked to his head. Seto looped the locket around his neck and under his shirt, out of the rain. The cut was beading red and mixing with the rain Seto stood in, out of the safety of his bed bower. “Why did you do it?”
“Do what Jin- keep your voice down,” said Seto, standing up and wiping the blood off. “Why did you-”
“I’ll be asking the questions!” cried Jin again. “You took advantage of Brittania! Why did you do it! You monster!”
Seto blanched. “I didn’t take advantage of her,” he said carefully. “She came to me-”
“Liar!” cried Jin, lashing out at Seto. Seto parried with his left arm. “You- you forced- you’re evil!”
“I’m not evil.”
“You’re a monster!”
“I’m not a monster.”
“You are!” Jin lashed out again and feinted up before taking off and diving right at Seto. Seto collapsed under his weight and rolled Jin underneath him.
“What will you accomplish like this?”
“Your death!”
“You want me dead?”
“For Brittania’s honour,” hissed Jin.
Seto’s eyes hardened. He realised that Jin would attack him until he was too weak or incapacitated to move. He strained to reach up and pinch Jin’s neck- and find the nerve that, if blocked, would cause temporary paralysis, but Jin twisted away and whipped at him with his tail- his spikes narrowly missing Seto’s face.
“That is enough!” Said Seto, now thoroughly wet and cold, his jacket having been inside his sleeping space. “I am not going to fight you! You’re a teen!”
“I am going to fight for Brittania’s honour, now or never!” Jin dived at Seto again, who brought up his foreleg to stop a collision- and Jin collided with the buckles on the arm bands Seto wore, splitting his face. He fell back, whimpering, touching his torn scales, then he turned his furious eyes back onto his former big brother.
“Jin- you know that was not intenti-” protested Seto before Jin roared- in a deep and threateningly adult way- and charged him. Seto flipped him up and onto his back, pinning down his vicious talons and forcing a knee into Jin’s stomach. “Wake up and smell the coffee, Jin! I am not fighting you!”
Unbeknownst to either of the combatants, they had collected a ring of spectators. Heketoro and Kyo looked at each other and nodded. The stepped forward, into the rain, and pulled Seto off of the gasping Jin. Jin coughed and spat and stood up. Heketoro gasped.
“Seto- you did that to his face?”
“He did that to himself,” said Seto in a tone dipped in bile. “Let go of me!” Kyo snorted and released him. Heketoro reached out to Jin to cup his face and check the bruised and torn scales traced with dragon blood. Jin shoved him away and he sprawled into the mud. Jin glared at Seto, who had blood trailing into his left eye. “There will be a better time. And be sure, I’ll be the one chewing on your throat.” He sniffed a bit of blood up his nose and sprang into the air.
Kyo turned to Seto. “What the hell was that about?”
Seto rubbed his chin. “Something about that she-dragon, Don’t worry about it. Growing pains.”
The herd nodded- knowing the agony of growing.
Amane crept over. “Onii-Sama- you’re bleeding.”
“It’s a head wound, they bleed a lot.”
“Yeah, but-”
“Look, I’m okay- you’re all getting wet. Get inside. Go away. Let me deal with my problems,” snapped Seto. Eventually the crowd dispersed. But many a long glance wondered why a boy with such a sweet disposition would turn against the man who was once his hero. The love of a woman can do a lot of things to a man- even if he’s still a boy.
SETO KAIBA
“You know, Onii-Sama’s been acting a bit strange,” said Mokuba pensively to Noa. They were playing a friendly gave of chess in the shade.
Noa frowned and moved his Bishop. “Yeah, I guess. He’s acting like a lovesick teenager without the lovesick. All moony and moody.”
“Isn’t that strange?”
“Yes. I thought he was over Kala.”
“He is,” said Mokuba defensively. “It’s not that.”
“When did he start acting like this, then?”
“Uh…” wondered Mokuba. “When he lost my locket.” Mokuba scowled. “Then Jin threw it at him.”
“How did Jin get it?” asked Noa with the air of one opening a delicious and sought after chocolate.
Mokuba chewed his lip. “I don’t know, actually.”
“Well however that was is probably why Seto is annoyed,” said Noa deftly.
Mokuba fixed his elder sibling with a narrowed glare. “Why can’t you refer to him politely? Onii-Sama.”
“I was born before him,” Noa said sourly.
“But he’s now older, so you should call him so,” demanded Mokuba.
Noa bit back a retort and sighed at Mokuba. “Fine.”
Mokuba nodded. “Check.”
Noa frowned, moved his knight, and smirked. “Checkmate.”
“What? Wait!” cried Mokuba. “Wait this is… absolutely checkmate…” He sighed “You win again.”
“You’re getting better.”
“Or you’re getting worse,” said Mokuba with a grin.
Noa smirked. “Then you’re getting sub-normal.”
“Then you’re getting-”
“What’s going on here?” interrupted Seto.
The two teens looked up.
“Hi, Onii-Sama,” said Mokuba brightly.
“Hi…” began Noa without enthusiasm, “Onii-sama…”
Seto looked at them both. “You’re acting strange.”
“No, that’s you!” said Mokuba sternly. “You’re acting totally weird!”
Seto frowned. “I am not.”
“Yes, you are,” said Noa. “It’s making you a bit of a drag to be around.”
“You don’t have any idea what you’re talking about,” growled Seto. “You two haven’t’ even reached puberty!”
“So it’s a girl thing?” asked Mokuba.
“Yeah- uh, no,” said Seto, frowning. “Yes and no and it’s none of your business.”
“We’re your brothers!” said Mokuba indignantly. “Of course we have business.”
Noa rolled his eyes. “Seto, people are starting to notice. If you keep acting this way, you’ll lose your leadership.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t be a leader then,” snarled Seto.
“I’d be leader, if you wouldn’t contest me, then,” said Noa with a glint in his eye.
Seto glared at Noa. “You don’t have what it takes.”
“Well you don’t either, the way you’ve been acting,” snapped Noa.
“Stop it,” said Mokuba. “Okay, Onii-Sama, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong,” said Seto.
“Seto,” said Mokuba sternly. “Don’t lie to me. There is something wrong and you’re acting like a zombie! Why are you acting like a zombie?”
“Well how should I be acting?” snapped Seto. “All carefree and happy?”
“I wouldn’t say no to that,” began Mokuba, “but I know you’re being sarcastic.”
Noa rolled his eyes. “You’re so subtle.”
“Okay, well first of all you keep shunning me,” said Mokuba shortly. “I don’t like it and I want you to stop.”
“Fine,” said Seto much more aggressively than he really felt.
“And you need to update your computer,” said Noa blandly. “I’m getting bored.”
“Fine,” repeated Seto without much enthusiasm- he kind of knew that but had been procrastinating. He had been procrastinating a lot lately.
“And would it kill you to start acting like yourself again,” asked Mokuba in a small voice. “I miss talking to you.”
Seto frowned, looking at Mokuba. His whole world had once started and ended with him. Maybe it was time to go back to his roots and begin again. “So what now?”
“Pizza!” Mokuba cried, throwing his arms in the air.
Seto actually cracked a smile.
BRITTANIA + EERINNA KAIBA + JIN KYOSHI
Brittania sat at the window, thinking.
"Brittania?" asked Eerinna.
Brittania turned to the girl. "Yes?"
"Sorry, I just..." Eerinna smiled sadly. "You seem so sad."
"I never expected anyone to come to me for relationship help," said Brittania seriously.
Eerinna grabbed Brittania's hand. "Oh, no, you're the only one I'd ask! My father kind of sucks at that stuff," she said fairly bitterly. "And no-one else in the herd... well I feel like I can talk to you. you won't go gossip about me behind my back. And Jin was my friend once, and he thinks you're okay." She smiled sincerely. "I hope you're my friend, too."
Brittania squeezed Eerinna's hand. "You're my friend," she said quietly. "I like our visits."
Eerinna giggled. "Yeah. Did I tell you about Zared's last visit?"
"Which one was that?"
"When he came to dinner- waiting for me."
"Oh yes, you did. He seems straight up and down," she said with consideration. "He lives under us in the mountain and he comes up to see Jin sometimes." Brittania drew on the ground with a talon. "He's working on something on the other side of the mountain. I said I didn't mind as long as it stayed on the side, and didn't intrude on my area."
"What's he doing?" asked Eerinna excitedly.
"No idea, he's secretive," she said and shrugged.
"Aww," said Eerinna with mock desolation.
Brittania sighed. "I think it would be nice to be so innocent and in love."
Eerinna touched Brittania's shoulder. "It's not all it's cracked up to be. I come to you for advice, don't I? But sometimes I do wonder... if maybe I think Zared feels less than I want him to."
"You mean he might not love you?"
"Yet," said Eerinna knowingly. "Who can resist me?" She posed cutely.
Brittania inhaled for a deep, booming laugh it catch in her throat. She felt a a sharp twitch of her lower abdomen and she clutched her stomach convulsively.
"Brittania?" squeaked Eerinna, her voice tight with fear. "What's wrong?"
"I think... I think.." Brittania gasped raggedly.
"Are the babies coming?" asked Eerinna, her voice rising even further.
Brittania grunted and nodded.
Eerinna flapped around, staring frantically and dashed out the door. "I'll go find Jin!"
Brittania nodded and pressed her eyes shut. She concentrated on breathing. In. Out. In. Out. Another wrench of agony and she let out a roar of pent-up fear and pain.
------------------------------------
Jin's head snapped up when he heard Brittania's voice on the wind. "Oh my god," he hissed.
"What's wrong?" asked Shoubu worriedly.
"I gotta go," he said shortly. "See you later." He started running to take off and launched himself up over the trees. He glided easily until he saw Eerinna waving him down frantically. He landed in front of her. "What?" he bleated.
"Brittania's in labour!" Eerinna shrieked. Every pony in earshot looked up and blinked.
Jin froze. Then he started to shake. "O...okay... Okay. Can you help?"
"'Course, of course!" Eerinna flapped.
"Go back up to Brittania, I know now and I'm faster than you, I'll get water and blankets and... whatever else I need," he said vaguely. He took off before he heard Eerinna's answer, leaving her unknowingly to go take care of her new siblings' entry into the world.
Eerinna patted the sweat from Brittania's face. "It's okay, it's gonna be okay," said Eerinna breathlessly. "Just focus on relaxing and pushing," she patted more vigorously. "And let it out."
Brittania roared in Eerinna's face.
Eerinna blinked, coughed, and began to massage Brittania's shoulders. "Jin will be back soon."
"What is he getting this time?" Brittania snapped.
"Ice chips," said Eerinna. "Don't take it to heard, dear. He's only making himself chores to do so he doesn't have to see you in pain."
"b*****d," Brittania moaned. "I can't strangle you."
Eerinna paused. "Uh. Thanks?"
Brittania laughed in a gasping way. "I am never having children again," she huffed.
Eerinna blanched. "Er... Maybe you'll have enough kids for you to be happy."
Brittania felt tears fall across her cheeks. "I'm scared," she said.
Eerinna hugged her. "It's going to be fine; we've got this stuff here from Bella, it'll be fine, you won't have any marks, and your babies will be all okay."
Brittania wept harder. "I'm so afraid."
"What are you afraid of?" asked Eerinna.
"The children."
"Oh," said Eerinna blankly. "Do dragons kill thier parents?"
"No," said Brittania. "Sometimes. But... I'm not sure they'll be dragons."
"But with you as a mother," said Eerinna reasuringly, "and Jin as a father, you should have a great chance at dragons."
Brittania gulped and looked away.
Eerinna swallowed tightly. "He's... not..."
"I-"
"It doesn't matter," said Jin, casting a shadow over the two women. "They were mine the moment they were concieved. My children," he inforced the notion. He pressed some ice chips to Brittania's lips and rubbed her throat. "I got you some meat," he said hopefully, pressing a mass of blood and flesh at her. "Will it help?"
Brittania gasped and shook her head.
"Later," said Jin, smiling wanly. He put it in some ice. He put his hand on her belly and Brittania roared again. "Bella said if I can count ten ripples in under a minute, they're ready."
Eerinna waited a minute, then asked; "How many was that?"
"A million!" cried Brittania.
"It was nine," said Jin. "But close enough." He grabbed the towels and started arranging. "Thanks Eerinna."
"Anytime," said Eerinna sadly.
"Never again!"
-------------------------------------------
It wasn't as easy as Bella had promised; the long incubation had forced the children together. Jin swaddled the first child and Eerinna leant Brittania against the wall so she could clean her up. her eyes filled with tears as she sat down next to Brittania again. "It's a girl," she murmured. "And she's a dragon."
Brittania let out a sigh of relief and pain. To have been the first one, she had not been sparing in the use of her claws. Dragon mothers were not prone to survive childbirth with any of their own kind. "She's beautiful," she gasped.
Eerinna patted Jin on the shoulder and put the first baby in a nearby cot to keep out of the way. The others followed.
Brittania staggered up to take a first real look at her children before she fellt heavily into Jin and he carried her away to sleep.
Eerinna entertained the kids until Jin returned. "They're beautiful," she said softly.
"They are," he agreed. he ticked the second baby under the chin.
Eerinna striked the first girl's hair. "A blue eyes white dragon," she murmured. "They're... Daddy's... aren't they?"
Jin looked at her solemnly. "Brittania doesn't want him to know."
"He's a great father, you know," she championed.
"Might be so," said Jin. "She's afraid he'd take them away from her. Eerinna," he said sternly. "You can't tell anyone. It's best they just think the babies are mine. No questions."
"It will come out," Eerinna protested. "I mean, they're my brothers and sisters!"
"They are," admitted Jin. "And they need you. But I am their father. I can take care of them. Until they're ready to face the world."
"You mean face my father?"
"Yes."
Eerinna wiped her face. "It sounds so sad."
"It will be okay," said Jin. "We just need to leave things for the future."

VESUVIA + HASSELTI + JIN KYOSHI + COMPASSION
Compassion watched the sun rise from her cleft in the mountain. How long had it been since she slept in her own house? She wiped a few stray tears and her gaze fell on a dark shape.
"Darkling?" she said, recognising the shape as her daughter Vesuvia. She patted down Vesuvia's red hair. "Did you sit here to watch the sunrise?"
Vesuvia didn't answer, or even move. This was her wont; she would stay perfectly still all day, like a carved statue, in the hopes of being left alone. She liked her mother and liked sitting near her. She liked wandering around after Jin as well, secretly calling him her father in her thoughts.
Compassion smiled and kissed Vesuvia's temple. "Don't forget to get breakfast, gorgeous." She stood up and wended her way through the artery of the mountain to the peak to help Jin with the morning meal.
------------
Hasselti meandered sleepily through the corridors, leaving Dalila sleeping in their cavern. It annoyed her a little that Vesuvia got her own room and she had to share with a sister and someone completely unrelated, but she supposed those were the breaks when you only had recessive dragon genes. At least she had someone to crawl in with if she had a nightmare. Not that she had nightmares! Or was scared at all. The option is there, is all.
She passed Tasma and Rage's rooms. Rage got the biggest, even a bit bigger than Compassion's room. Which also annoyed Hasselti, but at least she was not dead.
"Where are you headed, white one?" Asked Brittania.
Hasselti blinked and shook her head. "Um... brekkie? Am I late?"
Brittania placed a guiding claw on Hasselti's back and pushed her in the right direction. "No more sleepwalking."
"You're not having breakfast?"
Brittania smiled toothily. "Not yours."
-------------------------
Vesuvia chewed pensively on some toast.
"I didn't expect to see you up here, Vesuvia," said Jin. "It's a nice change."
Vesuvia blinked and swallowed and ripped off another strip.
Hasselti was falling asleep and nearly tumbling into the fire. Jin poked her. "You alright, Sel?"
She sat up straight and blinked sleepily. "Yup."
Jin frowned. "Trouble sleeping?"
"No. I sleep fine. I just don't do it if I can help it."
"Why not?" asked Jin.
Hasselti looked around warily and Jin put his ear down to listen. "I see scary things."
"Oh..." Said Jin. "Okay. Well then you and I are going off today. Eat your breakfast and we'll go."
Compassion settled herself at the breakfast fire between her daughters. "Go where?"
Jin frowned. "Kaiba mansion. To see Slavillia and Emir."
"Why?" asked Compassion with a growl in her voice as Hasselti leant her head on her mother and dozed.
"Sel has been having visions."
"What?" asked Compassion. "Visions? Like premonitions?"
"Future dreams, I think," said Jin. "Emir and Slavillia are trained with this. I would prefer to ask Zanobi... but he's not available. If Emir can't help us then I'll track him down." He patted Compassion's arm and passed her some toast. "There is no harm in learning more and getting a handle on it."
Compassion munched thoughtfully. "I don't think I could have found a better father for them," she said.
Jin grinned. "Someone must have raised me well."
Compassion blushed and whacked him with her toast.
HASSELTI + JIN KYOSHI
Hasselti held on tightly as Jin soared down through the updraughts towards Kaiba Mansion. He touched down gently and pulled Hasselti off his back.
"You okay, Sel?"
Hasselti shivered. "It's so cold to fly..."
"I'm sorry," said Jin sincerely. "I don't feel it so much... scales." He rubbed her arms vigorously.
"Better now," she said, wincing. "So..." she said looking up at the mouldering ruin. "That's where we're going?" She looked a little incredulous.
Jin grinned. "Demons don't have Spring cleaning. C'mon." He held her hand and lead her up the path.
"Demons?" asked Hasselti tremulously. "Are they safe?"
Jin smiled down at her. "I'm the biggest thing in this herd. I won't let anyone upset you."
Hasselti smiled. "Okay."
They walked up the disused path and up the cracked steps. Jin rapped on the door and let himself in.
"Jin?"
Jin looked around and sighed. "Ahh, Dom, you startled us. This is Hasselti."
Hasselti looked up at the purple and black mummy pony standing in the shadows. She didn't answer.
Mortedom smiled. "Hello, Hasselti, my name is Mortedom." He leant down. "That's a pretty necklace."
"Thanks," said Hasselti quietly.
Jin squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Dom, I was wondering if you knew where Emir is? We came down to see him and Slavillia."
"Emir isn't up yet," said Dom, straightening up. "Slavillia is though. Top floor in the solarium. Why do you want to see them?" he asked curiously.
"We have to ask them a few professional questions," said Jin.
Mortedom narrowed his eyes knowingly and pointed in the left direction. "Stairs that way. Have fun." He touched his forelock and went back the way he came.
Jin lead Hasselti up the stairs and opened the solarium door. "Slavillia?" he called.
She looked up from the book she pored over. To Hasselti, she looked terrible; covered in blood and with terrible ripped wings.
"What do you want?"
Jin smirked. "Wouldn't you know already?"
Slavilia snapped her book shut. "You foolish boy. I do not See mundane things. I would think you imagined life to be better used."
Jin's face looked like stone. "I'm here to ask for your help."
"And you even brought me a sacrifice, what a good boy you are," she said witch mock excitement.
Hasselti's blood ran cold and she tightened her grip on Jin's hand.
Jin growled back in his throat. "Do not threaten my child."
Slavillia smiled terribly. "What is it you do want, oh brawny one?"
"Hasselti is having visions."
Slavillia cocked her head. "Is this right, child?"
Hasselti nodded timidly.
"Do you see these things often? In water? In glass? Do you go into a trance? Or do you have dreams?"
"Dreams," said Hasselti softly.
"Do they frighten you?" she asked.
Hasselti nodded again and edged behind Jin.
"Do you dream these things every night? The same dream or different?"
"Most nights, but not every time I sleep," said Hasselti. Jin lead her to a pile of cushions and sat down beside her.
"And they are mostly the same but they have little things that change."
Slavillia frowned and walked closer to Hasselti. She took her face in her hands and looked into her eyes, tilting her face to and fro. "Hmm. Your gift is expanding. It hurts you, doesn't it?" She released Hasselti.
Hasselti's eyebrows tightened with remembered pain. "It hurts my eyes, and my head sometimes if it's a big dream."
"Mm" Slavillia tapped her lip. "You're missing something in the process."
"What does it all mean?" asked Jin.
"Hasselti. That's the name of a deadly spider," said Slavillia, ignoring Jin. "Some people can see things in their minds. Zanobi is one of those. Some people use crystal balls like Emir. I use a scrying bowl. The difference between Zanobi and Emir and I is that he does not need a conduit to be able to safely see his visions. I think you need a conduit."
She stood up and crossed to a cupboard. "But the fact that you can See freely means you do not have to pay a toll, like I do and like Zanobi does."
"So what are you saying?" said Jin, losing his cool.
Slavillia pulled out a crystal ball and sat back down before answering. "It means that we need to find the right conduit for Hasselti." She held the crystal in front of Hasselti. "Have a look at this. Do you like it?"
Hasselti looked at it but all she saw was a glass ball. "Um."
"Hmm," Slavillia frowned. "I don't think it's a ball."
"We're not going to start having her look in a bowl of-" he snapped off and glanced at Hasselti. "Of you know what?"
"No." Slavillia rolled the ball around. "Is there anything else you can do?"
"I can do hair," offered Hasselti. "I'll show you." She grabbed Jin's head and started moving his hair around. In a few minutes he had a secure Mohawk sealed with red web. It looked very punk-rock.
Slavillia smiled. "You create webs."
"But that doesn't help," said Hasselti sadly.
Slavillia smiled. "It can do. Do you use your web for anything else?"
"You mean like swinging around like Spiderman?" Hasselti giggled. "No. It's poisonous anyway."
Slavillia smirked at Jin.
"It doesn't work on me," said Jin. "Thick skinned."
"A pity. But this poison does not affect you, Hasselti?"
"Nope. If I hold it for too long my hands tingle though."
"Right. Do you know how to weave?"
"Weave like pictures?" asked Hasselti. "No..."
"Perhaps you should learn. Have you heard of people who paint the future?"
"A little," said Hasselti dubiously. "In a comic book."
"You might weave the future. Try it out and if it doesn't work come and see me again." She stood up and put her crystal away.
"Is that it?" asked Jin in irritation.
"Yes. Now get out."
"I don't need to be told twice," said Jin in an undertone to Hasselti. "Come on, Kiddo, we have to go see someone else now."
Jin lead Hasselti down to the second floor. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," said Hasselti. "I'm glad I know about it now."
Jin ruffled her hair. "Good."
"Who are we going to see now?"
"A man called Blaid. He is very good at sewing. He can teach you."
"What if he says no?"
"He's not going to say no to me." He looked down at her with a rakish smile.
Hasselti returned it but sadly. "I don't know why you couldn't have been my father."
Jin stopped her and leant down to her gaze. "Your mother... I don't think you will be seeing your father much at all. And your mother doesn't need to hear things like that." He brushed some hair off her face. "But you can talk to me about father stuff. Just like the other kids."
"Ok. I promise."
"Good girl." They continued down to Blaid's workshop. Jin knocked on the door but this time he waited until it opened instead of charging in.
The pony inside was just an earth but Hasselti felt uneasy. The way his eyes were dark and cold and his mouth was set in a barely concealed snarl.
"Blaid, this is Hasselti and she needs to learn how to weave."
"You want me to teach her." Blaid said. His voice was hard.
"Yes," said Jin. "Look at it as a personal favour. We need to see if she can weave the future instead of seeing visions. I'll owe you one."
Blaid stepped away from the door and picked up an unused loom, setting it up before a tall chair. "Sit."
Hasselti looked at Jin with alarm and he nudged her reassuringly, shutting the door behind them. She perched uncertainly on the stool as Blaid went around the workshop, picking out threads and things. Jin sprawled next to Hasselti and the loom.
Baid came back and turned the loom around, starting to stretch the base threads across it in a mesh. When he was finished, he dragged his own loom over and proceeded to taciturnly instruct Hasselti. Jin helped her out a little but she made a very big mess, always afraid that Blaid would snap at her. But he didn't seem annoyed by her lack of grace or skill.
After a few hours, Blaid started to pack her up. "That's enough for now."
Hasselti was grateful; her eyes were burning. "Thanks."
"Ok," said Jin. "I know your mother will kill me for this, but I think we ought to stay down here while you learn this."
Hasselti felt sick, but she knew she had to do this so she stayed quiet.
"We'll go home tonight though, to tell them, and then I'll stay down here with you. Are you alright?"
"Yeah," she said softly. "Just tired."
"Let's get you home, then," said Jin. "Thanks Blaid."
Blaid glared at them until they left.

HASSELTI + MORTEDOM
Mortedom tapped on Hasselti's door. "Can I come in?" he asked.
Hasselti quickly swept dirty laundry onto her bed and covered it with the doona. "Um, sure!"
Mortedom opened the door with a smile. "Hey, Hass! I brought you some lunch." He put his tray on her table as she hastily cleared it.
"Sorry about the mess, I've been... absorbed.
"It's fine," said Mortedom. "Have you seen your kiddies lately?" He grinned. "I do love having kids around this place."
Hasselti picked at her sandwich. "I see them every now and then. Carmine gets Valmoriel to bring her down." SHe sighed. "I miss them..." She absently rubbed her tummy.
Mortedom frowned and patted her shoulder. "It's all okay, Hass. I mean, it's a bit sad how things happen, but you've done the right thing. I mean, that's what your prophesy was about right?"
Hasselti smiled at him and gave him a squeeze. "Yeah. Yeah. That's right. I just feel a bit sad right now."
"Well we can't have that!" said Mortedom, jumping up. "Eat that and I will take you out somewhere!" He paused, thinking really hard on where to take her. "Oh I know!"
"You know what?" asked Hasselti. She took a bite out of her sandwich.
"Um, just thinking out load. Is is good?"
Hasselti nodded with her mouth full.
"Good," he said proudly. "I made it. You haven't been down to the kitchen's while I've been there."
Hasselti swallowed. "You don't eat- why are you in the kitchen?"
"Everyone goes there pretty regularly. It's a nice place to see people."
Hasselti smiled at him. Mortedom was a scary looking guy- but he was so sweet. He had no guile or nastiness and he did thing because he felt like it, not because he wanted something in return.
"You're staring at me," said Mortedom.
"Sorry," said Hasselti. "Just wondering. Thinking."
"Nice thoughts?" asked Mortedom hopefully.
"Yes," said Hasselti with a laugh. "Good thoughts."
"Well, eat up and I'll take you out," pronounced Mortedom in all seriousness.
Hasselti grinned, shoved her sandwich into her mouth and chewed and swallowed as fast as she could. "So, where are we going?"
"Where are you taking me?" asked Hasselti, incredibly aware of her dishevelled state and the fact that she hadn't brushed her teeth since the night before. She sucked furiously on a breath mint she had quickly shoved into her mouth from her bedside table.
"It's a secret!" said Mortedom cheekily, tucking her arm under his. "But you'll find out soon, so don't worry. I'm just milking the suspense."
"Oh," Hasselti smiled. Even when he was trying to be suave, he was cheeky.
Mortedom lead Hasselti up the staircase and up another one. "Figured it out yet?"
"Yes," said Hasselti. "But you tell me."
Mortedom nodded proudly. "We're going to the theatre! It's a good thing Kaiba liked to splash out on entertainment, because it's still light outside. I can't take you anywhere."
Hasselti patted his arm. "That's okay, going to the movies is great fun, much better than going out in the sunlight."
Mortedom opened the theatre door for her and then paused. "Um... may not have thought this all the way through. What do you want to watch?"
Hasselti frowned as she thought. "Nothing with kids in it. What is there?"
Mortedom dropped her arm and scrambled up into the operator's box. "Um... Letters to Juliet... Ooooh Edward Scissorhands, Breakfast at Tiffany's... what? Um And Planet 51 and Sense and-"
"Edward Scissorhands is fine," called Hasselti. She glanced around. "Ooooh popcorn maker!" She started the machine in the concession stand in the alcove off the theatre. "Ooooh frozen coke! Mortedom do you- oh... never mind."
"What?" Asked Mortedom from right behind her."
Hasselti jumped. She paused to get her breath back and Mortedom filled her popcorn into a box and turned off the machine. "Sorry, I was just about to ask if you wanted anything and I just remembered... you don't eat..."
Mortedom laughed at her unease and made her a frozen drink. "It's okay! I've never eaten, but I like the smell. SO when you're eating I get to smell it..." He frowned as he gave the drink to her and stuck a straw in. "Is that creepy?"
"Yes, a bit," giggled Hasselti. "But it's creepy in a nice way."
"Here," said Mortedom and he gave her the popcorn and closed the door to the alcove. "Get us some seats and I'll put the movie on."
Mortedom turned on the movie and then sidled along the row to sit one seat away from Hasselti with the popcorn on the seat between them. The eerie music of the opening of Edward Scissorhands started. He hadn't seen this movie before and he hoped it was nice.
Hasselti slurped on her drink and engrossed herself in the film. She grabbed a handful of popcorn and crammed it into her mouth.
As the movie progressed, Mortedom found himself identifying with the main character, Edward and thinking of Hasselti as the main girl what's her name... How could such a pretty girl like a freak like Edward... like him.
Hasselti giggled. "I love this part!" She glanced at Mortedom. "You okay?"
"Yeah," said Mortedom. "I'm having fun."
Hasselti smiled and watched the movie.
Mortedom fiddled with his bandages. The movie was lovely and all but now he was a little depressed.
Hasselti ate the rest of the popcorn and sighed at all the right places. She even teared up a little at the end.
When the movie ended, Mortedom quickly hopped up and stopped the film and put it away safely before returning to Hasselti.
Hasselti threw out her popcorn box and the empty drink cup. "Thanks, Mortedom, I had a great time." She paused. "Do you have a nickname? Like a shorter name than that?"
Mortedom thought for a moment. "Would you like to call me Dom?"
Hasselti nodded. "Sure, Dom is a nice name."
"I like that you like it," said Mortedom. "Now where to, milady?"
Hasselti sighed. "I don't know. Every now again I just feel so sad. I miss my kids."
Mortedom tucked her arm under his again and lead her out of the cinema. "Well. How about we make them up a room so they can stay down here sometimes? That gives you something to do?"
Hasselti put her head on his bandaged shoulder. "But what if they don't stay?"
Mortedom patted her hair. "Well if they do stay where will you put them? How about we try and find a room close to yours that we can make up?"
Hasselti didn't really want to but she knew Mortedom would not take no for an answer. "Okay. Lead the way."
Back on Hasselti's floor, Mortedom checked the next room to hers.He stuck his head in and coughed and withdrew. "Ack, no I don't think so..."
"What was in there?" asked Hasselti curiously.
"Um," said Mortedom. "It was... occupied. Someone was... making a lab for a... different kind of potion..." He cleared his throat and checked the door on the other side of Hasselti's room.
Hasselti blinked. Meth lab next to my bedroom? What kind of place am I staying in??
"This one is... good. We might need to disinfect and repain and rewallpaper and recarpet and... deodorise but..."
Hasselti peered around him. The walls and floor and even the ceiling were covered in thick brown blood. "What happened in here?" she asked, not sure if she wanted to know the answer.
"Either a murder, a suicide, a ritual, or a prank," said Mortedom lightly. "Yeah I think this would look much better is... maybe a light green..."
Hasselti pulled an unhappy face. "I don't know if I want my girls in a room that we had to wash the blood off of."
Mortedom urrowed his brow. "Oh. You would rather the meth lab?"
"Um." Hasselti was at once taken by a vision of her children frollicking around, completely out of their gourds on meth fumes. "You're right, bloodbath beats methamphetamines..."
"Great!" said Mortedom brightly. "Now I think if we ask Verdis, she'd hook us up with some paint. Until I can go out, want to just scrub off this top layer?"
Hasselti sighed and resigned herself to an afternoon of disinfectant and grossness. "Okay, sounds good."
Mortedom grinned and set anout throwing all of the soiled furniture out the window.
Hasselti lifted her aching arm. Another quick coat of paint, and then set this aside...
The room was cleaned and painted and even trimmed with a stripe of wallpaper around the walls. Hasselti was painting over a small table to set aside with a set of chairs and two as-yet matressless bedsteds.
Mortedom knocked and opened the door to her bedroom. "I got the mattresses inside," he said cheerfully. "They're in the hall; I didn't want them to get wet-paint smel-ly."
Hasselti nodded and wiped her forhead. "I'm nearly done. I think we should be able to set the room up tomorrow. We just need to find curtains and bedsheets now. And maybe a carpet for the floor."
Mortedom grinned. "Sure. And then maybe some toys and things! I can help with that!" He chewed his tongue thoughtfully. "Do you think they'll like green?"
Hasselti chuckled. "I'm sure they'll like anything you make them."
Mortedom looked embarrassed. "That's nice of you to say."
Hasselti giggled. He was so cute. "I'm nearly finished." She swiftly touched up the last patch of grey on the chairleg. She glanced up to see Mortedom smiling at her. "What?" she asked.
"Nothing," he said. "Come on, you're covered in paint, let's go get that yellow off you."
Hasseti did up her hair and retired to the bathroom to scrape off all the paint. When she emerged, Mortedom had laid out a rudimentary dinner for her: a very well done cheese sandwich, some salad and a glass of watery lemonade. Hasselti was touched that he'd thought about it.
Mortedom hovered in the corner while she ate. "Is it okay?' he burst out suddenly.
Hasselti tried to unstick her teeth from the cheese but was forced to swallow some lemonade to regain the power of speech. "It's fine," she said thickly. "It's great."
Mortedom let out a greath breath that Hasselti hadn't noticed he was holding. "I'm a little relieved."
Hasselti swallowed with difficulty. "It's fine, I promise."
Mortedom sidled over to her and sat down next to her. "Um. Hass. I hope you don't think I'm... overstepping," he said hesitantly. "But... I really... um... I really like you," he was looking at her arms as he said this, not game enough to look her in the eye, but not cowardly enough to stare at the floor.
Hasselti stared at him for a few moments. She opened her mouth but she couldn't think of what to say.
Mortedom could not stand the quiet. "Um I know I'm not really alive and all but... I do have feelings."
"I know you have feelings!," said Hasselti indignantly. "I think you're alive," she said more quietly.
Mortedom's eyes flicked up to her face and down again. "I like that that's how you think..."
Hasselti squeased his hand. "I like you too. A lot. You're so bright and happy! You make me want to be happy."
Mortedom smiled and put his face down gently against her hands. He closed his eyes in rapture.
Hasselti smiled and her chest expanded with sadness and love. "Oh, Dom. Don't we make quite a pair?"
"Any pair is better with you in it."
"You're so cute..."
Hasselti stroked Mortedom's hair gently. He so loved it when she touched him gently. She was reading a novel while she sat with him out on the balcony.
"Is the book good?" asked Mortedom sleepily.
"Yes," said Hasselti. Vesuvia just sent it to me."
"What's this?" asked Mortedom, pulling something out of the book. "A bookmark?"
"No it looks like... photographs," said Hasselti, taking them from him. "They're... it's my girls..." She bent over Mortedom to show him. "That one, there, that's Valmoriel. And the other is Carmine Masque. Aren't they so beautiful?"
Mortedom sat up to see better. "Yes they are, they're very cute." He frowned. "There's something on the back of them..."
Hasselti flipped the photos over. "Oh yes, there's writing! This is from Vesuvia. She's telling me... about them." She sniffed quietly. "And this one..." She flipped over the next picture. "Oh... It's from them..."
Mortedom hugged her. "It's okay. Are they coming to stay?"
"Um... yes... but not for a little while..." She sighed with disappointment. "They have to have Brittania's okay."
Mortedom smiled. "Well at least when they do, they'll have a room to themselves."
"Yes," said Hasselti. "You know, I feel a lot better about the whole issue now. I had some long talks with my father... Jin Kyoshi I mean. And he's helped me so much."
"Have I helped?" asked Mortedom hopefully.
"Yes, of course," she smiled at him and kissed him cheek. "I wouldn't be quite so happy if not for you."
"I do my best. Do you remember how frightened you were when you met me?"
"Ot was a scary day for me. I even had to meet Slavillia!"
Mortedom frowned. "She's not so bad!"
Hasselti started laughing- she just could not help it. He just made her feel like there was nothing too important.

JIN KYOSHI + BRITTANIA + DUCHESS
"Tundra," said Jin warningly, "be careful with him. Don't turn him around like that."
Tundra frowned and put Mr Chuckles the egg back in his nest next to Magina.
"Thankyou."
Jin was doing some carving at the main dropoff point while keeping an eye on the kids inside. He was just getting started on the second branch of the elm tree when a shadow passed over him, followed with a cold blast of wind as someone flews down the cliff face and landed on the ledge he was carving. Jin threw himself up over the cliff and flung himself in front of the intruder; between them and his children.
"Girls, get the eggs into the bunker and stay there!" growled Jin, glaring at the intruder.
Vesuvia, moving faster than she ever had, launched across the cavern, snapped open her wings, clutched Mr Chuckles with three claws and flown out into the East artery. Tasma took hold of Magina and used her safeguard ability to shield Tundra and herself as they hurried down the Nrth-West artery.
The intruder, a grey female wth curly white hair, folded her wings and, wisely, did not move forward. "I am Duchess," she said. "And you are Jin Kyoshi. I've come here to discuss the futures of those eggs your daughters just ran away with."
"You have no right to come uninvited to my home," snarled Jin.
"You also had no right to take those eggs without consulting the council."
"The council of Hippogryphs is in shambles!" retorted Jin. "I saved them!"
"So you own them?" spat Duchess. "It's not you I have coe to see anyway," she said, shaking back her lovely curls. "I came to speak to your mate."
"You mean me?" asked Brittania, walking into the landing cavern with state. "And you are?"
Duchess strode to meet Brittania and dipped her head slightly. "I am Duchess and I have come to get custody of those eggs."
Jin flared his wings in anger. "You can't just walk in here and-"
"Shut up, I'm not finished!" Duchess cut him off angrily. "As I was saying, I would like to apply to you, the Green Lady, for a residence in your mountain."
"Is that so?" asked Brittania quietly. "There are a few caverns on the other side of the mountain. A third of the way down. You could have those."
Duchess frowned, then smoothed her brow by force of will. "I would prefer someting closer to the peak..."
"All the caverns at the peak are unavaliable," said Jin shortly, folding his wings down and flexing his claws.
"If that's the case..." began Duchess. "Well. I would appreciate those caverns you were telling me about." She nipped her head again. "I would also, of course, love to raise the eggs around your children, as your mate was so instrumental in their safety."
Brittania frowned. "Just because you've asked for board and houseroom does not mean I am willing to offer up those eggs to you as well. Why should you have them?"
Duchess restrained an angry remark. Brittania, as she knew, was a queen amongst Dragons and the head of a draconic dynasty and as such, not to be trifled with, even when she pisses you off. "Because they are hippogryff eggs, not dragon eggs. A hippogryph should raise them. ANd as I am the only one applying for the job, I'd say I'm a prime candidate."
Brittania smirked. "You have that right. Move in, get yourself settled, and I shall see how you interact with my brood and the eggs."
"I could ask for nothing more," said Duchess and, with a farewell nod, she turned and flew out into the sunshine.
Jin frowned. "I don't like her."
"You're just protective," said Brittania. "That's a good thing. Didn't you hear what she said, though? She wants them to grow up on my mountain, near my children. How much closer would you like?"
"You're right." Jis nibbled her neck. "You're aways right."
Brittania smiled smugly. "I know."
JIN KYOSHI + DUCHESS
Duchess sat disconsolately in the malformed cave Brittania had given her. It was taller than it was wide. It barely let her lay down. And it was infested with rats.
She sighed. It was never going to be that easy, was it?
"Hey."
Duchess looked up. Jin leant his elbow on the cave opening with his chin on his claw.
"Hello Jin."
"You look depressed."
"I'm not. I don't know why that would be," she replied huffily.
"You know," said Jin, transferring his chin to the other claw, "Brittania did this to me the first time I moved in. Except my cave was even smaller."
"How did you fit in?"
"I was only a foal."
Duchess blinked. "You... oh my. That's ter- I mean. That's kind of harsh."
Jin nodded. "Long story though. Anyway, I thought I would come down and see how you were going. What's your talent, by the way?"
Duchess frowned. "Soothing balm."
"Ah," said Jin. "So not good for renovations?"
"No," said Duchess sadly.
"Would you like some help with this place?" Jin asked. "You can't raise two eggs in a place not even big enough for yourself."
"You would help me?' asked Duchess hopefully. "But... it would take so long. The eggs might be grown by the time I have a home for them!"
"Brittania didn't tell you there are two hollow chambers abutting this one," said Jin, checking out his claws. "Shouldn't take too long to break through and even out the edges."
"And you'd help me?"
"Yeah, said Jin seriously. "It would be great for my kids to have some friends. That and, I think if they have those eggs hanging around all the time, they'd get scrambled."
"What?" yelped Duchess. "What do you mean?"
"Rage can electrocute things. Vesuvia can overcook your internal organs. Tundra can freeze you alive and Hasselti is poisonous."
Duchess blinked at him in shock. "O...h..."
"Rage is also very antisocial at the present."
"Does she tend to... electrocute people a lot?"
"She tried to. Tasma can counteract her power. But no-one wants to be around Rage without Tasma and they don't like to be around each other at all." Jin sighed. "All very complicated."
"Maybe having another parent figure around will help?" asked Duchess.
"When she stops smelling like rat guano, maybe."
Duchess blanched. "Yeah."
"It's okay," said Jin. "I had mice. Squeeze out of there and go get a bucket of water." He crawled out of the way for her to leave and took a deep breath. "Okay." He focused and dug his fist into the rock.
Duchess was tired. She was grimy and dirty but she finally felt she was getting somewhere.
Washing her hooves in a bowl of clean water, she looked around her new, enlarged home. It was still covered in dirt and there were rat corpses around, but it was an improvement. While Jin did the heavy lifting, Duchess carted out the debris.
She examined her blackened face in the mirror Jin had given her. Her lovely white face was all dirty. She wiped it off gently.
There was now the front room, with the landing space, which was a lot bigger, and two smaller rooms for bedrooms. The last two still needed to be cleaned out, but she was just too tired to do any more. She had been sleeping in the front room to save herself sleeping on dirt. It was cold but it was preferable.
Jin told her that he wouldn't give her the eggs until her home was ready for them. Duchess had to agree it was the right thing to do, but there just seemed to be so much to do. She curled up to sleep the deep sleep of the exhausted and careworn.
----------------------------
Duchess woke up in the brightness of the day. She couldn't guess what had woken her though, until she heard is again.
Swish, swish, swish, scrape.
Duchess' head jerked up and looked around. Someone was in her cave!
"Don't panic, it's just me," said Jin, coming into the main room with a broom in his hand. "I got and early start."
Duchess stood up and stretched. "Ahhh. Thanks."
"Hey, go up to the top, they've got breakfast there for you," offered Jin.
Duchess stood up, stretched out her muscles. "Thanks Jin." She dove out the window and extended her wings to catch an updraught.
She landed up at the peak where pancakes and toast and porridge were cooking over an open fire.
"Hello Duchess," said Tasma politely. "Sit down and have some pancakes."
"Thankyou," said Duchess happily, doing as she said. "Would you pass me a plate, Tasma?"
"Sure."
Duchess helped herself and looked around at the children. There were so many of them. It was such a blessing on the mountain to have them.
Tundra sat down next to Duchess. "Hey, lady."
"Hello, Tundra. Try the pancakes."
"Cool."
Soren tried to balance two plates at once. "Oh... oh woops!"
Duchess took the remaining plate away and picked up the broken shards. "Here you go," she said, handing him another one. "Careful now."
"Thanks Duchess."
"So what are you guys up to today?" asked Duchess.
"I'm going to practise my card games some more," said Tundra.
"That sounds great."
"I was thinking of helping you with the cleaning," said Tasma. "I don't really have much else to do. And then later I'm helping Tundra practise."
"Because I'm helping in the morning," said Soren.
"What's on the agenda for you in the afternoon?" asked Duchess.
"Not sure. Might go see Medusa or something."
"That's nice." She put down her plate. "Well I will just take these plates away and then help Jin with my cavern."
"I'll help!" said Tasma.
"See you lot later."
-----------------------------------------
Tasma had curled up and fallen asleep in the corner while Duchess and Jin worked when Duchess called uncle and sat down for a break.
"Uh I'm so tired."
"We're nearly there," said Jin. "After this, we just need to wash the place out and scrub it down."
Duchess groaned and buried her face in her hooves.
Jin chuckled and patted her shoulder. "It's okay. It'll only take another day. If we get it done toady, you'll get the eggs in two days."
Duchess sighed. "I wish I could believe that."
"Ahh. Then let's go get Zared to help." He held her hooves and lifted her up. "We'll need both of us."
"Why?" asked Duchess.
"Zared can't fly."
Zared stumbled gratefully into the cave. "I do not like flying," he said sickly.
Jin chuckled. "Well as soon as we're done, you won't have to fly again."
Duchess smiled. "Thank you so much for helping me," she said sweetly.
"It's no problem. Let's see... back two rooms." He was a little unsteady as he looked into them. "Looks like you've been working hard."
"You can tell?" asked Duchess.
"Well by the look of the tyke in here," said Zared, bringing Tasma into the main cavern. She was fast asleep in his arms.
"Ahh," said Jin. "I'll take her up to bed."
"There's one over here she can use," said Duchess, pointing to a freshly made nest.
"Thanks." Jin put Tasma there and watched her curl her serpentine tail around herself.
Zared clapped him hands softly. "Right! Now to work." He went into the back room and blocked himself in with a wall of ice.
"Is he going to be okay?" asked Duchess.
"Sure he will."
"Ewww! Gross!" came Zared's voice from behind the ice.
Jin and Duchess glanced at each other.
"You okay?' asked Jin.
"Yup!" said Zared. "But some rats are not."
"Ew." said Duchess.
"Let's just sit," suggested Jin.
"Yeah."
Jin played with a stray bit of iron ore. "So. Are we good now?"
"Yes, I think so," said Duchess. "You know, we both have the best interests of the eggs at heart."
Jin smiled. "We do. I love kids."
Duchess grinned. "I noticed. You have so many. And none of them seem to be related to you."
Jin's eyes grazed the ground. "Mmm."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you."
"They are Brittania's children and Brittania's protégées. She works on their futures and their heritage..."
"And you do the nurturing?" asked Duchess, looking at him.
"Sounds about right."
The ice suddenly cracked, expelling a torrent of filthy water. Duchess and Jin leapt up just as the wave curled up to meet them- and then froze.
"Sorry! Sorry," said Zared "I lost control." The ice-wave started melting and trickles in rivulets from the cave opening. "Good news- the worst of it is gone. Just another purge will see it right."
"Yay!" said Duchess. "Thanks, Zared."
"No problem," said Zared. "You just owe me one. " He winked.
Duchess arranged straw and soft blankets and even her own soft down in the innermost chamber for nests for the eggs.
"Knock know."
"Hey Jin!" called Duchess. "I'll be out in a moment!" She plucked out another feather from her chest.
"Owch," said Jin, blanching. "Didn't that hurt?"
Duchess rubbed her chest. "Yes. But it's for the eggs. Soft down is what they need."
Jin chuckled nervously. "Well are you ready to go get them?"
"Yes!" giggled Duchess. Jin took her hand and walked her to the opening.
They flew together up to Brittania's carven entryway and Jin lead Duchess down into the playroom. Duchess cooed and swept Mr Chuckles into her arms, nuzzling Magina.
Jin smiled warmly. "I'll carry them down if you make sure I keep my grip."
Duchess nodded and pushed Mr Chuckles and then Magina onto Jin's back. With most of the children watching, Jin rode the wind slowly down to the caves he and Duchess had been renovating, with Duchess hovering around fearfully. The trip ended well and Jin proceeded into the furthest chamber, where Duchess snugged each of the eggs into their down nests.
"Is it me," she said quietly, "or do they look happy here?"
"I think they're happy," said Jin. "You did a good job."
"I think we did a good job," she corrected. She looked at him with glowing eyes. "Thankyou."
"S'ok," said Jin. He kissed her hand gently. "You settle in. I'll see you later." He nodded curtly and left.
Duchess sat down on her nest and put her face in her hands, covering her eyes in misery. How stupid! Falling for a mated man! And so devoted... The perfect man, who already had the perfect woman.
-------------------------
Duchess was cuddling her eggs when Brittania flew down and into the cavern.
"Duchess?" called Brittania. "I want a word."
Duchess emerged, looking a bit weepy. "Yes, Brittania?"
"I would like a favour from you," said Brittania. "Jin told me about the last time you parted. He tells me everything, so don't think he was ratting on you. I think you have feelings for him. Is that true."
Duchess felt tears coming on her again. "I feel awful about it," she mumbled. "He was just so nice to me and..." she couldn't look Brittania in the face. "I think I fell in love with him."
Brittania pursed her scaled lips. "That makes things easier. Jin is my mate, but Idon't know if it is right for him to stay with me. I want to give him an opportunity to be sure of himself."
"What do you mean?" asked Duchess. "What kind of opportunity?"
"This is hard to explain," said Brittania. "But I think he should spend some time with you. Without thinking of me."
Duchess blinked. "Oh... I think I understand. A... trial seperation?"
"While he has no biological children to me and he can walk away freely."
Duchess nodded. "I can't say I understand why you're willing to let him go, but I think I understand why you would want him to know."
"I do. I appreciate your help."
"I didn't say I'd help!"
Brittania smiled. "I know."
Duchess, resolute, flew up to the peak to see Jin. She found Soren, Tundra, Hasselti and Vesuvia up there instead.
"Hey, kids," she said brightly.
"Hey D-ess," said Soren.
"Good afternoon, Duchess," said Tundra.
"Hi, Duchess," said Hasselti. "Where are Magina and Mr Chuckles?"
Vesuvia, as usual, said nothing.
"The eggs are safe in their nests," said Duchess. "How have you been?"
"Can't complain," said Soren.
Jin cam up behind them. "Hello, Duchess. Been well?"
"Yes, I have," said Duchess. "I was wondering if I could talk to you?"
"Sure," said Jin. He motioned her to follow him. He sat down on a big rock verlooking the ocean and Duchess stood next to him.
"How have you been, really?" she asked quietly.
Jin sighed. "I hate how little faith she has in me."
Duchess frowned. "It's not you, it's her. She thinks of you too highly to bind you to her. Don't blame her."
"But she thinks I could stray from her so easily. She values me too highly. I'm afraid I must be letting her down."
Duchess put her hand on his arm. "I don't think you could ever let her down. She loves you."
"Then why would she do this to me?"
"Same reason. She loves you." She sat next to him and tried to wrap her arms around him. He was a bit too big, but she tried and it's the effort that counts, after all. "I wish I could help you."
"I think you are," he said in a muffled voice. "It's wierd to talk to someone about Brittania and not have them hate her."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Basically everyone in our herd hates her. Tey think she corrupted me and kidnapped me and kept me here against my will."
"That's awful."
"It's not true, either." Jin sighed. "I did run away and I did come here, but she always told me I should go back to my family. But I couldn't leave her. She looked after me by letting me find my own way."
"It sounds like you were in love with her even then," said Duchess.
"I might have been," said Jin seriously. "Maybe that's why she wants me to be sure."
"She doesn't mean any harm."
Jin rested his head on her shoulder. "You know what?"
"What?"
"Those eggs are going to be so lucky they got you as a mother."
"That's sweet."
"That's what she says. She used to say I'd rot my teeth if I got any sweeter."
Duchess took hold of his face and lifted his upper lip. "You still have them."
Jinjerked his head away and licked his teeth. "Careful with those. I need them to... chew on rocks with."
"Sure you do," giggled Duchess.
-----------
Jin stared out of the cave opening into the glittering night. He missed sleeping next to someone who breathed and was warm. He made an unsatisfied sound in his throat and tried to curl his tail around like Brittania did.
"Are you having trouble sleeping?" asked Duchess, coming softly into the airy room.
"I'm not used to sleeping alone."
"I'm sorry. You can sleep with the eggs if that would make you feel better."
"That's okay," said Jin. "The sky is really lovely from your cave."
"I know," said Duchess proudly. "I love the view, especially at sunset. Back inland, you don't see the coast. I mean, I know we hippogryphs hate merponies, but the water is still very pretty to look at."
Jin murmured in acknowledgement of her satement. He heard her feathers rustle and she lay down beside him.

CAPRICIA + VOLUBILE
Capricia drew on her straw again. She wasn't really thirsty anymore, but the iced chololate drink was very yummy. She evaluated the ponies in the cafe while she sat and drank her hideously expensive cup of cold milk and flavouring.
Suddenly, a mischievous look marred her pensive features. "Look at that one, Volly. That one over there, the pink unicorn!" She looked at her brother. "We should do him next! And... uh... oh," she giggled and had to hold her hoof against her mouth to stop it from being so loud. "That one, the one in the dress, the kirin outside in the dress! What do you think?"
"Hmm," Volubile murmmurred distractedly. His sister liked to play these silly little games, they weren't really that fun to him. Meddling got boring quite quickly. His sister, on the other hand, liked to move people like pawns on chess boards. The more exciting and controversial the move...the more excited she became. Eventually, he knew he'd be forced to really interact with her, or she'd hassle him to death. But he didn't want to give in too easily. He flipped the pages of the paper, "Hmm."
Capricia was flicking her eyes towards both the pink unicorn and the elegant kirin with an air of one rubbing one's hands with evil delight, but she stopped this when she heard the second 'Hmm' from her brother. Her bright smile immediately changed into a narrow look, almost like someone had thrown a blanket over her head and insulated the mega-watt smile.
"Hmm?" she asked, compressing her voice so it was not icy, but still unpleasant. "Is that all?" In the silence, she tensed like a wound coil.
Carefully, he folded the paper. He knew that warning tone in her voice. He took a sip of his cappicino and glanced negligenatly at the two ponies she mentioned. He had no love for this, there was too much work involved and she always got bored. "What else would you like me to say? It felt like a general summarization of what I felt about the situation." He glanced away from her cold eyes, she still hadn't forgiven him.
"I would like you to say," said Capricia in clipped tones, "something helpful. I always have to pick the ponies and then I have to try and make you pay attention." She picked up her drink and smacked it back down, making the chocolate froth around.
Carefully, he handed his sister a napkin. "What do you want me to do about it? Maybe it would be eaiser if you told me what you wanted me to say so that we can stop this conversation. I'm bored already." He couldnt' resist baiting her.
"Fine," said Capricia in a strained voice similar to her normal voice. "I would like you to say 'Yes, that one, let's do it, it will be fun, let's'", at this point, Capricia slid lower in her seat and punctuated each word with a kick under the table. "'Have. Some. Fun!'" She looked almost hysterical with her eyes too wide and a hint of madness within them.
He winced as she punctuated her words with a kick. "Fine," he slammed down the paper on the table. "If we really must. I don't know why you're so for this. You'd think--" He stopped talking abruptly. "Which ones again?"
A retort dying on her lips and tears fading from her eyes, Capricia sat back up and looked around. "The kimono girl outside with the tea," she said quietly, "and... and the pink unicorn with all the cups."
Vol considered the two with a raised eyebrow, "Those two? Together?" He frowned at the pair. "They don't seem likely," he picked up his drink again and took a sip. "But you will have your way, so how will we do it then?"
"He looks like he's going out," said Capricia in hushed tones. "He'll have to pass her. Right then, I think." She nodded with excitement, the delirium of having power over someone else taking over and removing her pain at Volubile's withdrawal from her. In this one thing, they were together again, even if he didn't want to be. He was still her brother and she would MAKE him be her brother again.
Volubile couldn't help but see the animation in his sister's face, the pure joy of stringing this together. It'd been a long time since he'd seen her truly smile as though she meant it. If it was up to him, he'd give her all she wanted...But sometimes the things you wanted weren't what was good for you. She had never learned that lesson...maybe it would have been better if he'd let her. "Okay. That works," he watched as the kirin moved closer and he pushed out the power that he and his sister used together. She was looking up, and then she was really looking at the pink unicorn as though she'd come up for air.
Capricia watched the joint powers from her and her brother wash over the kirin and the unicorn. She saw the kirin stop and smile sweetly but with reserve to the unicorn and watched her lips move to greet him.
"I think it worked!" she crowed to Volubile. "That will be an odd couple!" She laughed so hard people stared and it began to take on an edge of hysteria.
He reveled in her laugh, the brightness of it and the ease with which it came. It had been good to do this, even if it was just watching the goofy looks on the two lovestruck victim's faces. "Oh love," he laughed along with her. "What fools it's made them."
Volubile's sharp tone made Capricia cease laughing and stare at him. "Is all love foolish, or just theirs?" she asked half-fearing the answer.
"Not all love," he said softly as he reached out and touched her hoof. That broken look on her face, those sad eyes. She still hurt.
Capricia resisted the urge to snatch her hoof away from him, his lying words like ice shards all over her skin. 'Not all love, but my love', she thought angrily. 'Or were you so jealous and selfish you couldn't let another person love me? And now... you act like it was all my fault. For loving someone... Well, you fixed that, didn't you?' It hurt, even to think these things, these true things that she wished she could say. Maybe by saying them in her mind they would be found untrue, maybe she had had a nightmare and she would wake up with a betrothed and a brother and be happy.
But the words were true, no matter how she tried to see them as false.
'I am alone except for you... because you made my love... love another...'
She had flinched, he'd felt it. Gradually, he could see her shrinking away from him. She deserved to know, she did. He should tell her about her "love". He should, but he was a coward about it. If he told her the truth, would it help her to get over that undeserving male? Or would she become more bitter and withdrawn? Maybe it was better that she just hated him instead of---He couldn't tell her. "Please," he begged her. "Not this. Not now."
Capricia ignored him and looked away. Outside, she saw the Kirin and the Unicorn smiling at each other. She had taken a few of his cups for him and he looked as though he was thanking her too much for it. The magic had taken and they were in the beginnings of love. But they were the only ones. In the cafe, the seryph twins saw across from each other. Their talents were united by a bond of love, but there was no longer love between them.

ZURIN
Once upon a time, there was a man who invented an extraordinary thing. He invented an object which could move and do things of its own free will. It did not breathe, or eat, or sleep, it would not even die unless the materials which housed it failed. But that material would not fail, for the man had chosen to house his miraculous object in the dropped scales of dragons.
Dragon scales can be shone to lustre as gems or even used an small tiles for jewel-bright mosaics, but their best use is as an ageless material to make magical objects, or artifacts. In the time before the Great Betrayal, when dragons were common amongst humans, dragon scales were highly prized and the most wondrous items were made from them. Dragons also made such things easier to create if they inspected the materials to ube used beforehand and blessed them. This blessing made the materials more responsive to the design of the maker, more malleable.
After the Great Betrayal, when the Glass King perished at the hands of pro-dragon zealots, the use of dragon scale in anything was discouraged. Many fine homes who had boasted of their expensive trinkets mad clever possessions made of dragon scale his them away, for to dispose of them and have them found could open them up to accusations against the new king.
So the wonderful artifacts which moved with their own will were hidden away in shame. In this time of concealment of beautiful things, one man endeavoured to find an alternative to dragon scales and recreate the wonders of the past without the use of such an unpopular material.
That man slaved away in the mountains to the east of the capital of the kingdom. he mapped and designed and created his masterpiece and then he realised it in parts of burnished golden metal.
There was only one, very important problem. In all the years the man had pursued the making of the incredible items which could act for themselves, those called Cylerion Animals, after the creator not of the item design itself but of the item's free will, he had never seen one. He knew what they looked like; they looked like the normal trinkets of dragon scale which adorned the boudoirs of rich ladies and the studies of rich men. In assuming that Cylerion animals were utterly the same as these simple-moving but unwilled items, he had overlooked the contribution of Caselyra, the person who, in imbuing a small, semi-precious stone with personality which her father then used to weight down the small fish decoration he was making, gave the fish the personality she had described to the stone.
The result of his hard work and ignorant assumptions was a huge sculpture of metal, larger than any Cylerion Animal ever made, with the capacity for movement but no will to do so. It was an ugly, hot monster with dark holes in its skull for eyes and nose where flames burned in the eyeholes and smoke rose from the nostrils. He had tried to replicate the shape of a dragon with a heart of fire, much like a stove. What he created was the ugliest heater ever invented.
In despair and shame the man fled with the monster of his creation, too proud to admit that the miracles woven from dragon scale were impossible to replicate without the aid of a dragon. He set up his own workshop in his exile with his creature and attempted to move on with his life, trying to redeem his massive failure with one good invention.
He did not know that, while his failed copy of a Cylerion Animal had no personality nor free will, it was capable of learning, just as it was capable of movement. Its continued exposure to its creator and others slowly impressed upon it what it was like to have will, free or not. What it would do once it had the will to move, none could say.
Zurin, for it was he who had invented Infernus and who now lived in Nightmare Valley with him, entered his workshop one warm morning and clicked on the lights. "Good morning, old boy," he said in a bright way to the hulking mass of metal that was his creation. "Had a good sleep?"
Infernus did not answer, but Zurin had not expected him to.
