"I don't think Calliope is that cruel" he said, finding himself defending the wolf who'd caused him such grief. "I... I think it must have been something in her past or.. I don't know. She was cold to me, I felt unwelcome, but she would not have turned me out, or harmed me... I don't think" he wasn't one hundred percent sure.

Then it occured to him what she'd said. "I didn't know you were uhm... an orphan?" he had been imagining a pack of blue wolves all this time - perhaps that was further from the truth than he imagined. Ouranos amongst blue wolves did seem a rather odd thought.

"I think you're right" he replied, having not noticed her reverie because of his own. Her comment about bright and natural seemed to have been plucked right out of his mind, as he imagined a little pup with Oura's colour and bright blue spots somewhat like Eva's. His thoughts caused him to smile, and when his eyes came back to hers they were a little more hopeful than they'd been before. "I hope I will find somewhere like that" he said "though I have no idea where I'll go. Do you know where you'll be going 'when you're older'?" he asked, remembering her earlier comment.

"Yup, orphaned as pups." She lost her good humor and stared upside-down at the sea. "My brother and I, that is. Calandra is our adopted mom, and a wonderful mother overall." She could have gone on into the whole issue, but that... wasn't a story for a veritable stranger. Eva didn't look at Ovid, but she did change the subject as her eyes followed the shimmering waves hitting the shore.

"I know where I'm going to start off," she replied to his question, thinking of the fire, of Indie falling into the river during their escape. Her voice got soft as she said, "There's only one place to start."

A sigh escaped her after another long moment of staring at the ocean and reliving the past, and then she suddenly flipped back to her stomach and looked at him. "You could always stick around for a few days, you know. There's no better place than Outriders to get you slowly adjusted to wolves like me. Most of the pack is quiet, out of the way, or just plain absent, but my brother looks a bit like me and Cali is like you: all natural with markings." Eva smiled. "And she can't have prejudices. It's just not in her, I don't think."

He wondered what it would have been like to be orphaned - would he have ended up in a pack which would have been kinder to him? Perhaps so, but he couldn't discount the kindness of those who had not been cruel to him and he certainly could not wish his mother had never been in his life. Her unreserved love is what had stopped him from becoming completely sure of his own feelings of inferiority.

His eyes followed Eva's, out across the deep, dark waters which stretched to the horizon, still awed by the sheer volume all in one place. He almost didn't hear her words, at first, or see her turn towards him, and he shivered a little as he came back to himself. Stay here? That sounded good, if they were all as friendly as Eva was. "If... if you're sure it would be ok? It'd be nice to have somewhere to stay for a few days until I can figure out where to go..."

Hearing her call her mother Cali, he smiled wryly "It's kinda weird, isn't it, that two wolves with such similar names have such different personalities? Maybe I can meet them?" he asked, feeling a little brave after their long conversation, and figuring that he might as well get on with the work of finding himself a place in this world. He didn't want to tell her he still found her blue pelt a tiny bit disconcerting, though he was growing to really like it, but he figured the more he was exposed to, the more he'd find such coloured pelts normal...

"I'd have to talk to her about maybe finding a den for you anyway, so sure. They should both be up soon, if they aren't already wondering where I went." Evadne rose to her feet and shook herself to dislodge any loose dirt from her coat. Names had nothing to do with personality, and she almost told him so flat out.

"Personality depends on what happened as you grew up, I guess." She walked casually back towards the dens, in no rush to get back. "We should head back and clear your stay. We may have to go to the Alpha." Eva glanced back at him and smiled, flicking her tail twice. "Don't worry about it, she's not natural so she doesn't have any concerns with what your pelt looks like."

Turning back to the walk ahead, she turned and trailed along the edge of the beach rather than heading down onto the sand. "This way."
