Kimmie was terrified. She stared at her gun on the ground, shuddering somewhat violently, lost in her thoughts unaware of the surroundings. Why was this happening? Sure, she wasn't a saint, but she hadn't done anything bad in her life. There were people who'd murdered and killed and raped and beat others, and all they got was some jail sentence which was cut when they acted sympathetic. She hadn't done any of those things. Sure, she'd stolen a chocolate bar from the corner shop when she was twelve, and she played boys along sometimes...but never anything serious! She didn't deserve to die!

Cameron's voice broke her from her trance, the female glancing at the male, teeth chewing her bottom lip lightly. He looked...he looked terrified. His eyes were so wide. He was going to... Going to what!? The answer came all too quickly, however, as some white foam started spilling from the corners of his mouth. And blood...horrible, red, thick blood. He looked...he looked rabid. With the wide eyes and the foam...oh no. They...They couldn't! Another choked sob broke through the teenager's lips as she stumbled forwards a few steps, her beliefs comfirmed by Cameron's words. Ten minutes!? Surely it couldn't have been ten minutes! Not already! They said time flew when you were having fun, not when you were being made to play some psychotic cat and mouse game where the punishment for defeat was your life!

Why was he giggling!? She was terrified, in hysterics, afraid to touch him as he stood, giggling in an extremely creepy way. What was the drug? Did it make you go crazy, before you died? Tears leaked out of the red-heads eyes, shaking her head in disbelief. He couldn't be dying. Cameron was the one who always had a joke, laughed about stories like this. But this wasn't a story. This was all very real.

Kimmie gave a cry of surprise as she was dragged to the floor with Cameron as he fell, not expecting the sudden weight on her wrist. She crumbled to the floor with another sob, instantly up on her knees and shaking Cameron's shoulders, as if she were trying to wake him up. And she was - maybe he'd wake up. Maybe it was just a sleeping drug, rather than anything deadly. Maybe this was all some sick, sick, sick joke and he'd sit up in a moment laughing his head off about how funny her face had been. But he didn't, and he wouldn't. She knew it, really. This was a sleep he'd never wake up from. But that didn't stop the distraught girl from trying.

But something did stop her. Something very, very painful.

At first it felt like a very sharp pinprick, in her right shoulder. But then the pain blossomed, spreading further and further like an explosion of sheer, utter agony in her shoulder. She gave a shriek, collapsing forwards onto Cameron as the shriek morphed into a scream, the pain unbearable. Her hands flew up to try and cradle the wound, but that only prompted more screams, and more tears as the movement of her right arm prompted even worse pain in her shoulder. She rolled off of Cameron, unable to move, get up, do anything. It was too much. Her gun was on the other side of the room, where she'd originally dropped it, so she couldn't even defend herself.

Her throat raw from the screaming, her breath coming in short, rasping gasps, Kimmie gave a sob as her knees came up, her whole form shivering as she curled into a fetal position on the floor. She was dying. Clearly someone didn't care about the value of a human life, and was out to save their own. She couldn't blame them. And with the pain in her shoulder right now...ending it sounded like bliss. In any way possible.

She didn't get to see Kimmie's reaction to Cameron's death, too busy wanting the box to reply back to pay attention. Not that her attention was held there for too much longer by Azzo speaking. She didn't hear what he had said but she knew he had said something.

But that was probably because she heard the gun cocking and found her eyes widening in surprise, dread making her stomach cold and unbalanced. Was he...? Hearing the gun fire answered that question and she shrieked in fright at the fact he really had pulled the trigger.

And then there was Kimmie's scream that had started off as a painful but bearable sound. It was only when it turned to a scream that she tired to cover her ears with her hands, tears running down her cheeks and trying hard not to upchuck against Azzo's back. She couldn't do this, couldn't let Azzo do this! There was no way she could live with herself if this continued, too many lives had been lost.

And so, in a movement of brave stupidity, she moved around the dark haired male to once more stand in front of him. This time she wasn't clinging to him though, that would be her next move she was sure, her front facing his as she attempted to be a human shield to the wounded girl. It was just so hard to do in handcuffs, blasted things.

"Please... Don't take her life too.. There has to be a way we can save her."

There was too much ******** death in this school and she was tired of it. Tired of the heart ache and pain everyone felt, tired of trying to pretend the world wasn't so harsh and cruel... When was it all going to end?!

Azzo looked at the girl and then gun, and back again. That was before Mel stood in front of him.

He sighed and shook his head muttered, "She shot.... didn't want you hurt..."

His mind wasn't really working, it'd shut down after he shot. He looked at the clip and started to take it out, hearing the girl whimper in pain. Giving a sigh, it'd been better if it'd been quick rather than missing her heart. Now she was suffering.

"Would you rather loose your life like Cam?" He nodded towards where the boy lay lifeless. Foam and blood still slightly pooled around him. Azzo's mind was still numb but it was working well enough he could mutter a few idle responses.

She whimpered. She felt so pathetic. But she was scared. Not just scared, terrified. Kimmie knew she was a bit of a scaredy-cat. The only things she wasn't scared of were water and heights, which was pretty lucky considering she was a diver. But pretty much everything else she couldn't manage. Fire, clowns, pidgeons, storms...and the big one. Death. They said everyone was afraid of death. But Kimmie could feel her heart beating ten times faster than usual, despite the feeling that someone had their hand around it, squeezing hard. She was just so, so scared. Her parents had always told her to be brave. To face up to her fears. But death? Death was different to everything else. Everything else could hurt you, disgust you, but you'd come out alright in the end.

Death was forever. You couldn't come out alright from death.

She shuddered, yet another sob breaking through as she heard words spoken. Her mind was in pieces, she didn't understand. She could make out movement out of the corner of her eye, but didn't want to move her head in case of more pain. Didn't care. Pain - there was something else she was scared of. Kimmie wanted to move, wanted to run away, but didn't dare uncurl herself for fear of more agony coursing through her veins. It was so, so horrible...a horrible, burning agony spreading like wildfire, consuming everything in it's path.

Be strong, my love. Be brave. That was what her parents had said, when she'd suggested not returning to Barren Pines. They'd insisted she return, to face any fears she had. This only proved that her fears had been right. But...but she'd faced them. Just like they'd told her. She was here, right now. But she didn't want any more pain.

"Would you rather loose your life like Cam?"

Despite her jumbled mind, those words shot through, loud and clear. Loose her life? Suicide? But wait, it wasn't suicide if it wasn't her commiting it, was it? She was so afraid. So afraid of death. What if there was nothing? Kimmie was a mild Christian - she wasn't a regular church attendee, but she believed in God, believed in heaven and hell. But now she was doubting herself. What if there was just nothing. Would she just float in nothing, for the rest of eternity? She didn't want that to happen.

The pain was just so much, though!

Face her fears. She could end the pain - she was getting the choice. Only one pair could make it out alive. There were three. Those gunshots at the beginning, perhaps they were the end of one pair. Cameron was dead, it was just her. These two had a chance at life, they weren't going to waste it. They wanted to live. If she tried to retaliate, they'd just shoot back. More pain, more tears. More fear. If she faced it now, she could die less painfully. One quick shot to the head, or the chest, that was all it needed. She'd have conquered her fears, all of them. Death was her biggest one, so in conquering that, she'd have achieved something. All of her diving trophies, her achievements in life, they would mean nothing, compared to not being afraid anymore. Not letting fear control her.

And suddenly, all seemed clear. Calm, clear and serene. The sob that broke through the silence was one she couldn't stop, but clamping her eyes shut, teeth nibbling her bottom lip, Kimmie gave a slow, sure nod.

Was this what it was like, to be free?

Azzo's eyes still placed on Kimmie, right past Melody. The regret in his eyes told stories of how he wished none of this had ever happened. How he wished he could go around like few other students not knowing how this happened.

He was wishing that things had been different, that he had died before, when he was with Naico. He sighed, "Mel she's suffering..." He muttered as he moved her aside.

"I can't let her suffer..." He said, "Naico didn't.... not for long...." He leveled the gun one more.... "To let one suffer... like a rat in a cage being tormented... it's..." He sighed as he cocked the gun once more.

"I'm sorry Mel. None of this has to weight on your shoulders... You don't even have to face me again..." He looked up at the box, "It's okay to hate me."

He pulled the tigger, and afterwords let the clip and gun fall to the ground. "It's okay to hate me..." He repeated.

She couldn't see what was going on behind her, couldn't see as Kimmie had seemed to make up her mind that it was she who needed to die. But she knew, some how or another she knew and it was likely the sob the other girl had let out.

Sadly, however, Azzo's words had struck a cord in her. Did she want to die like Cameron? Insane and foaming at the mouth? No matter how much she disliked violence she was afraid of death. It had hurt so much to lose her Gran so long ago and she didn't want to give others that same pain, she feared her death would make others suffer in sorrow. She didn't want that at all.

She didn't have a chance to say anything when she was pushed aside, forced to stand beside Azzo and watch as he took aim. Her tears had been silent up until he spoke. The pain in his voice, the sorrow in his heart was so over bearing that she let out a whimpering sob. She understood, Kimmie was in pain and it was either let her continue to suffer and possibly bleed out while they died while trying to figure this s**t out... Or help her to not suffer, to give her the peace of death. She couldn't blame him.

"I won't ever hate you," she managed out around her tears, glancing away from Kimmie's body to spare her the pain of watching the girl likely die. "I can't ever hate you."

She heard footsteps, and jumbled words. 'Suffer', 'Rats', 'Hate'. None of them mattered. The reality set in - she was going to die. Death was fast approaching, and it was in her hands. It was a choice she'd made. She'd chosen to be brave, to stand up (well, not literally stand up) and face her fears. She felt strangely calm, strangely happy. She'd achieved something. She was free from her fears, and despite her looming death, her heart felt light and her mind felt clear and free.

"Thank you." she whispered hoarsely. There was a loud bang, and then it was over.

It was messy.

But whether Kimmie's conscience went to heaven, hell, or was to be floating around in nothingness for eternity, it was happy.

She was finally free.
