Kirin gave a decidedly 'unladylike' snort at the move. If Ara was anyone else, Kirin would accuse him of being lazy. But after so long playing against each other, Kirin thought Ara must be waiting to see if Kirin would continue or was just making a random one-off move.
"That won't work for long," Kirin advised loftily.
He moved a rook forward a few places, the pawn in front of it already having been moved. Kirin had a strategy building where this would be in good place for defensive manouvres later on. But he wouldn't blame Ara if the other boy just thought Kirin was being facetious about his moves.
Kirin hit the timer and raised his eyes to Ara. "Something on my face?" he asked, having felt the weight of Ara's gaze.

Ara snapped out of his reverie. “Oh, err, I thought I saw something, but it's nothing, please excuse me. And… don’t worry. This will get better.”
Several moves later (and several “j’adoube” later – he just had to correct the position of those pawns going over those poor squares that didn’t deserve it), the boy seemed to be on the path to success; he’d captured both white knights, while his own was stalking the king with the help of a few cluttered (but equally menacing) pieces.
Meanwhile, he’d tried to observe Kirin without outright staring; you just don’t stare at ladies. He was still completely certain there was something wrong. Actually, gathering his memories and the most recent data, he understood what made the girl stand out in his mind… … she most certainly had had cancer during the past years. It all made sense. The way the disease and the chemo modified slightly her traits and hit her femininity, her much too perfect hair, the way her body adapted and moved, her attitude, her secret love of life’s things such as karaoke, her defying of the Barren Pines staff by hacking her way into a floor she wasn’t supposed to live in. Of course, in hindsight, Arastoo had completely forgotten his theory concerning Kirin’s name. If asked, he’d deny having ever thought this was a serious idea. I mean, just who would give a string of code for a child’s name, now? Also, actually, he had never seen a cancer patient with his own eyes during his short life. But he didn’t care; after all, you don’t need to travel around the stars in order to be an astronomer.
It was all clear to the freckled guy, and he would need seriously contradicting information to think otherwise. But even though the “girl” must have been sick at some point of her life, and might still be, he didn’t even consider letting her win. She didn’t need his pity, she only needed an opponent. Thus, he pushed his rook forward one square, touching it only with his fingertip, a satisfied smile on his lips. “Checkmate.”

Despite a few "checks" in Kirin's favour (and equally as many in Ara's favour), it seemed Ara was taking out the game with his checkmate. Kirin exhaled forcefully, then obligingly tipped over his King to signify defeat.
"Good game," Kirin congratulated Ara. More out of his self-programmed manners than anything else, but considering he could actually tolerate Ara more than he could most students at this school, it wasn't so horrible to lose. One battle, at least. Kirin intended to win the war.
"I suppose this puts you in the lead? I'll have to work harder to overtake you." Kirin referred to the overall tally of all their chess games. He suspected Ara kept as close an eye on their scores as Kirin himself did - after all, Ara was the one with the fetish for numbers, statistics and patterns.
Ara's considering glances hadn't gone unnoticed during the length of the game. Kirin wasn't entirely sure what that was about, but considering one of Ara's first comments to Kirin had been, "May I compliment your hair, miss? It is very symmetric and beautiful, it doesn't make people notice your flat chest at all," Kirin was just a little worried about earning so much of Ara's attention. Ara was smart. Kirin-level smart. He was good at seeing through Kirin's strategies - Kirin just hoped Ara couldn't see through the feminine disguise quite as easily. But as long as Ara didn't realise, Kirin could feel smug about being one step ahead of the mathematician.

“Good game”, repeated Ara, as he proceeded to shake his opponent’s hand. Immediately after that, he began putting the pawns, black and white, in their right places. He didn’t need to think to spout stats; instead, he had to restrain himself not to restate the obvious with an unnecessary amount of words and numbers: “It does. Nice opening move and nice counter-attack with your queen 11 moves ago, by the way.”
Arastoo was pretty smart, but whenever the human or natural factor went into play, he could fail pretty epicly, and never notice it even when the absolute proof would sneak up behind him to bite his a**. That’s why he asked casually, with no hint of malice whatsoever in his voice: “I presume you learnt all these tactics while playing at the hospital?”

The corners of Kirin's mouth tugged upwards at the compliments. It had been a good game, both of them pulling out their best moves and strategies. That was the whole point of playing someone decent - Kirin wouldn't need his bets moves to defeat someone of lesser talent.
"Thank yo-" the automatic response cut off as Ara's next sentence sunk in.
Kirin froze. Hospital? Where did Ara... How did he...?
'He doesn't know, he can't know, don't think of hospitals don't think of hospitals dontthinkofhospitalsdontthinkofheritneverhappenedyouresomeoneelseitnever-!'
Close eyes. Reboot brain. Shake it off. Carry on as normal.
Despite forcing a smile, Kirin's voice couldn't help but come out icy, revealing his true opinion of this topic and how little he wanted to discuss it. "Pardon me? Hospital?"
The instinctual reaction to the mention of the place his mother died over with, Kirin was left at a loss. Trying to parse through all the possible options Ara had brought this up, Kirin was left with one thought:
'Did he realise I'm male, but think I've undergone gender changing surgery?'

The funny thing with Arastoo’s mind, is that he tended to skip directly to the conclusion. He only realized after the fact his train of thought wasn’t the most obvious thing in the world. And Kirin’s reaction didn’t look good at all. … which only confirmed his theory. Of course she would hate hospitals after enduring chemo! (Though the gentlemanly part of his brain reminded him as coldly as Kirin did that health is part of someone’s privacy and should never be brought up without a warning. No actually, why am I even bothering, grumbled that same part, just shut up next time, right? Shut up and stop making a fool of yourself.)
“Err, I didn’t know how to bring it up, I’m very sorry if it hurt you. What I meant is… I should have noticed earlier you’ve had a hard time with the treatments for that kind of… disease.” Quick calculus time. Most likely case: the girl is going to slap him if he doesn’t say something else now. “You seem to be in good health now, but you can ask me for help if you have a problem with anything, I insist.” Ara was pretty satisfied: he completely got rid of the previous risk. What’s the worst that could happen to him now that he has shown genuine sympathy?...

And... brainfail. What? Disease? Ara thought there'd been a problem with Kirin's health?
Kirin closed his eyes and rubbed at his temples. He didn't need to fake a long-suffering expression, it was all too real. Damn mathematician added 2 + 2 and got 7, overcomplicating things that should have been simple.
Well, at least his secret was still safe.
"I'll remember that," Kirin said, suddenly feeling very drained. "If you don't mind, I think I'll head back to my room and lie down. I'm feeling a bit tired."
Suddenly realising how Ara might take that, he shot the other boy a scowl. "No, I'm fine, my health is fine. It's a very normal kind of tired."
There. Being touchy about it would be normal for someone who'd had... whatever Ara mistakenly thought Kirin had suffered from.

Our mathematician had exactly two big problems: -he kept seeing patterns and important hints where there weren’t any; -and he could not know if what he said is offensive because nothing much really offended him at all. And both of these issues were now associated in a hideous but vaguely hilarious combination of misunderstandings and untold secrets. As if he had taken the hint, Ara lowered his head, biting his lip. “… alright. I understand.” A pause. “... shall I accompany you back to your room…?” He had avoided the most physically painful consequences, but instead, there was that familiar confusion. He wasn’t devoid from empathy, far from it, but he just didn’t understand why people kept sending mixed messages.

"Thank you," Kirin was clearly not feeling thankful, just mouthing the appropriate response, "but I'll be fine. I'm not a delicate flower about to collapse on the short walk back to the dorms."
With a nod of goodbye, Kirin exited the chess room, making a beeline for the library exit. As he left the building and entered the courtyard once again, a smirk appeared on Kirin's face.
So much for fear of exposure to Ara. In the end, the war? Was going to Kirin.
