You may have noticed that throughout this thread, I have been adamant that games ARE getting easier.

Several hours ago, I ordered an import of Demon's Souls from Amazon.

I may well change my tune.

I'm sure you'll find Demon's Souls will be as difficult as they say. But it's still just one game. An exception to the rule.

Games have more mercy programmed into them now. the origional was impossible to beat unless you were amazing at the game. nowadays people beat games and there's nothing to it. Some games, though only a select few, are still very hard, but not as impossible as the old games like tetris. There is also the issue of respawning and save points, as well as auto save that make games easier now. Its also a proven fact that games with 3/10 difficulty (, or selectable difficulty,) sell more. So yes, I believe that games are easier nowadays.

I believe that they are easier because they appeal to a wiser audience nowadays. It's not "geeky" to play games. Families play them.

Yeah, but back in the day, the general demographic for games were primarily little kids. So it the ideal thing would've been to make them easy enough so that kids can beat them.
Instead, they went for the arcade method. Suck the quarters out of people, and since that worked, they just did it with console games too.
I think the difference now is that there's other ways of creating replayability. Bonus missions, extra costumes, weapons, different in-game outcomes, endings, and so on.
Back then, if you were to go through one game from beginning to end, it would be like 3 hours, tops (RPGs and the like excluded). And then after that, there was nothing new to offer. So the replay value came from relying on the fact that a single peson would not be able to beat the game on his first try. So they'd have to replay it again, learn the enemy tactics better, not fall for the traps they fell for their first try, and little by little, they'd get further and further, until they finally beat the game.

Hmm, Im not too sure actually. Think theres a few to think about before deciding.

For one, the person playing them. Is that person a hardcore gamer? Occasionally gamer? Newbie? Defiantly think how often/long the person has been playing games should be taken into account. Someone whose been playing games for years might think that newer games are getting easier because they know what to expect from them.

Next, I think the game play itself needs to be looked at. Games back then are all pixelated compared to new games. Is there more effort being placed on the graphics than the story itself? Most games seem to have awesome stories, but are short. Is that because of online play? Online games seem to have shorter story modes than games without online play.

Then theres preference? Are only certain games getting easier? You mentioned GTA IV. I found that game to be easier than GTA Vice City. To me it may have gotten easier, but to someone else who hasnt played all the GTAs might think differently. Recently got into army games. Socom is the hardest game I own, to me. Cod is another one. Not as hard though. Graphics blow my mind and make it hard for me to distinguish players from scenery. Take it back before 2000. Back then Id play games like Banjo Kazooie and Zelda. Both sort of challenging for me at the age I was at. If I played it now I bet I could blow right through them since Ive had years of practice with other games.

you make good points, but I have to argue with one point a little. A person new to gaming would have no idea how to go about judging whether games have become more difficult or not.

Not unless they get hold of some old games. Although they seem relatively easy now because of how much gameplay itself has developed.

A person new to anything should research and experience its origins.

True, though its not often kids ask themselves, I wonder what these were like ten years ago? They usually ask no questions and just play them.

Well, kids like that can't call themselves real gamers.
Or, if the subject was, say, a certain music genre, they can't call themselves a fan of that genre... "I'm a fan of Heavy Metal." "Oh yeah? What's your favorite band?" "Nine Inch Nails. It's the only metal band I know." rolleyes
