Gullien blinked down rather dazed at the small child sitting on her lap. The small child, equally concerned, stared back up her. They were sitting in a large unfurnished room on the third floor of what appeared to be some sort of dimension-shifting, sentient store. For all intents and purposes, she would be LIVING in the sentient store. With a baby. In this room. All because of the stupid milk. This was clearly why she wasn't allowed to do chores. All she'd wanted was milk and a peek into the potions store she always saw coming and going. Then it went downhill with glowing cats and long-necked people and being shoved in a room with a baby. Right.

"So... Hi! I'm Gullien! Your name is Thylassa, right?"

Stare. Oh yes. Pre-verbal. Yay.

"Right. So, I guess I'm going to be watching you for a while. Well, not a while. Your whole life, really. So, I guess, I'm going to be adopting you." Not that she HAD to. She could always just shove the kid off her lap, form a couple of seals and jitsu the hell out of here. As long as she never, ever bought milk again she was safe. The thought was very very tempting.

"Buhba."

"What?" Gullien leaned forward, trying to catch whatever the kid was trying to communicate. One little hand reached up and carefully pulled an eye-bobble down. Down, down, down, release.

SMACK

"Ow! You little!" Gullien fell back as what felt like a hard rubber ball got her right in the eye. Right in the EYE. There was irony in that, surely. Pain too.
Thylassa fell with her, ending up chest to chest as the little kid shrieked laughter. Against Gullien's better judgement, one hand come up to brace the kid while the other pressed against her aching eye. Thylassa cooed happily as Gullien's hand supported her and began blowing spit bubbles in Gullien's face.

"You, young lady, are one dangerous kid. Since I do not relish having to flee from you when you come after me with abandonment issues years from now, I'd better stay. But we are going to have to get some furniture. This floor sucks."

Thylassa, wiggling as Gullien stroked her back, simply cooed again. She'd won and she knew it.

"Let's hope this isn't the beginning of a trend."

"Bwee!"

"Hey Mona!" Gullien slid the door shut behind her, arms full of packages. The building didn't really match the map she had... at all, really, but she'd finally found the minishop. She'd still need to grab stuff from home like the futons and some clothes but for the minute she needed to make Lassa comfortable. "How did everything go?"

Baby Moniter was still hovering over Lassa's makeshift crib, a cardboard box carefully padded with Gullien's jacket. It was a good thing she'd been wearing it today. Otherwise Lassa would be bunking down on a mesh shirt and some underwear.
"Where were you?" Mona piped up, pausing to scowl at Gullien before resuming her circling. "You took forever! I though you said it would only be a second. What was I going to do if she started crying or if she wet herself. There aren't any other diapers here!" Despite Mona's complaints, Lassa looked far from crying. She was staring at the hovering Nimue with deep fascination. Mona did have a point, though.

"Well, we're prepared for that now. I picked up some diapers from the store upstairs. I'd be faster if I could. The map to this place is totally outdated and there wasn't anyone around to ask for directions! You're lucky I left markers so I could find my way back."

Mona shrugged, abandoning Lassa to peer over Gullien's shoulder into the bags. "So what did you bring back? Diapers, right? Anything else?"
"I've got some blankets and a pillow... I'll have to run home and pick up a futon. Sorry, but that's more babysitting for you. A buncha toys. It'll get me something to do if she doesn't like them. Blocks, doggie, rattle..." Gullien rattled the rattle for emphasis. Thylassa immendiently gurgled and put out hands for it. Gullien handed it over and watched the baby happily rattle the rattle while blowing spit bubbles.
"Okay, that's going to get annoying soon. They had food, but I'd better get a mini-fridge or something first. Some bathroom supplies... should I have gotten a toothbrush? She doesn't have teeth."
The Nim shrugged. Her daughters hatched from their pearls as adults. She didn't have to worry about things like this.
"Meh. Some first aid stuff, a few books. I think we're set on the basics."

Mona glanced around the room. One empty bureau with a drawer missing, said drawer with a baby, one empty bookshelf and a bunch of stuff on the floor.
"No you're not! You're not set at all! Go home and get everything else! A futon! Another bookshelf! Even some of your doomed plants if they can survive the trip! Get some pictures. This place looks like a hotel room."
Gullien glanced around, tail drooping. It did look really bare, but... unfair. She had a life and in a day she was supposed to abandon her house, move all of her stuff and come live with this kid she hadn't even created?

"I know that look!" BAP
"Go home, get the stuff, get Matthias to come in and take care of the fish and that squishy Wethkin thingy. You know the other water Nim will watch out for the koi. Then get your butt back here and make this a home! You don't get a choice!"
The Nim hovered, scowling, with her arms crossed and an authorative air. Gullien restrained the urge to salute.
"Okay, okay. I'm going. Will you two be all right while I'm going?"
"We'll be fine. Come back soon, or I'll tell Spectrum."
Gullien shuddered. She knew what the family-orientated fire Nim could do.
"All right, I'll be back in like an hour or so. Take care you guys."

Mona watched in satisfaction as the door clicked shut decisively. Really. So Gullien hadn't asked for the baby. Who cares? Why throw away happiness when it hit you in the eyeball?

Her musings were interrupted as a hideous stench filled the apartment. Thylassa dropped her rattle and began to cry, indicating her unhappiness with her present diaper state. Sighing, Mona ripped open the diaper bag and labriously hauled one out. Uggggggh. Heavy.

A baby moniter's work is never done.

So I got Thylassa a stuffed Totoro. Why not? They're big, they're cute, they're cheaper than a Gameboy and I've yet to hear someone complain they secretly encourage drug use or something. She seems to like it! I should probably buy her the movie sometime.

Darn thing's as big as she is.

RP with Chinchillie and Sabriel!

Edit: And Grey and Odnako!

Chinchillie
--The Library

Finding a library here had been amazing - if there was one Chin thing had mourned about in the old HQ, is that she never had enough books to read. Now she trailed her fingers along the handsomely cut wood. 'This is heaven.' she thought. No more picking out books to reread, or running out to get something quick and coming back and finding everything in ruins...

Chin heaved a happy sigh and plunked down next to Sabriel, curled up on an armchair that was about 10 times his size. Right. They'd come here to read. Picking a book from the stroller beside her, she spread it across her lap, and tapped him on the top of the head so he'd pay attention.

Sabriel listened boredly as Chin read from Alice in Wonderland. For a while now she'd been sitting him down for little reading sessions, almost none of which made any sense to him. To pass the time, he picked at the bottom of his sweater with his claws so it'd eventually unravel - for the umpteenth time she patiently pulled his fingers away. It was a habit she disliked very much. He waited until she'd gotten involved in the book again before he went back to the sweater.

She didn't know why she bothered, sometimes.

Gullien
Gullien wandered down the hall. Lost. Lost, lost, lost. The map she'd been given showed this place at like half the size it actually was. If that. Apparently nobody'd thought to print out new maps after the place grew or metamorphasized or whatever it was that buildings do when they grow. Which they shouldn't.

"Okay. We've passed a swimming pool, a bunch of classrooms, bathroom, random fountain to nowhere... and still no people. What's your verdict? Are we alone forever?"

Thylassa took her foot out of her mouth and thought about it for a second. One bobble eye craned up to look at Gullien while the other pointed down the hall. One direction was probably as good as another. Besides... who cares? Toes.

"This direction, huh? Okay... hey, looks like there's a library down here. Wanna check it out?"

Gullien quickly trotted down the hallway, pushing the stroller in front of her quickly as Thylassa giggled. Both of them stared as they came up to a huge wooden down. A voice could be faintly heard on the other side. It had the chanting quality of someone reciting something, but the words couldn't be heard.

Thaylassa clapped her hands and pointed at the door, entralled by the voice.

Gullien, eager to see another living person, did her lady's bidding and shoved the door open with a grunt.

Chinchillie
Chin nearly jumped at the unexpected creak, quickly turning around to see who it was. Both person and baby were complete strangers - that was hardly surprising, since she'd only met a few people so far. "Hi!" Getting up proved difficult. She shifted Sabriel, who growled and refused to budge, tried to find a bookmark and failed, and finally gave up, smiling nervously at the pair.

"Neat room, isn't it?"

Sabriel pretended not to be interested, but was really seething with curiosity over the new baby. He couldn't help looking over once or twice. Compared to the other Mishaps, she was really weird. Blue and funny things on her head...

Gullien
Gullien peeked in the opened door, surprised to see the chanter was a humanish young woman with ankle-wings. She appared to have been reading something to a baby... an odd looking baby. It must be another Mishap kid. A black animal-thing, with a bunch of weird tails. It looked pretty alert though, from the way it was staring at Lassa. Well, and from the way it was pretty much keeping the woman pinned.

"Hey." She smiled nervously, wheeling Lassa's stoller into the room. "Yeah, it is. Was it always here? It isn't on the map they gave me." She waved it around as proof.

Thylassa eyed the other baby intently. Hmmmm. Hmmmmmm... She eyed the giant plushie sitting next to her. Well... the colors were kinda right and so were the ears, but Totoro didn't have tails like that. Boo. So, what the heck was the other baby if he wasn't a Totoro?

Chinchillie
"Nope. " Chin still sounded unhappy about it. She'd learned a bit of the new HQ's layout, but things kept popping up and surprising her at every turn, like this room. Taking in the other two, especially Thylassa, she went to wrestle Sabriel off again so she could get up. He didn't like it - he tried latching himself to her arm with his claws - but she patiently pried him off again and set him back on the chair.

Sabriel blinked at 'Lassa, seeing her eyes on him when he sat back up again. All of them. Wanting to get a closer look, he glanced measuringly at the floor...maybe it wasn't that far...and once more found himself lifted. He made a cross noise, glaring up at Chin as she set him on the floor. Darnit.

Not wanting to lose such a good chance, he set off for Thylassa's stroller.

Chin stuck her tongue out at him before heading over to the pair. "Aww, she's a cutie." she said happily of Thylassa, waving a hand over the baby's head - she couldn't resist, because of those eyes. All the babies here were adorable. (well, excluding one). She must be another Mishap...and maybe even younger than Sabriel?

"Are you guys new here?" she asked, wanting to know rather a lot.

Gullien
Gullien wagged her tail cautiously as she watched the furry little Mishap approach Thylassa's stroller. Cute, in a feral kinda way. She approved highly. "He's pretty cute too. Yep, we're new. Just got in a few days ago, actually." She knelt down, carefully performing a combo of lifting Thylassa and tilting her forward out of the stroller in an attempt not to actually carry her. It seemed to have worked, the little Mishap was placed safely on the carpeted floor without tears or screaming. "I just finished getting her room set up today, so I thought we'd wander around and see who else was here. I'm Gullien and the squirt is Thylassa."

Thylassa blinked up, tracking the new adult's hands with her top two eyes while fixing her other two on the new Mishap approaching. Her chest eye, per usual, remained closed. Not wanting to fall over or risk being picked up, she simply waited for the other baby to approach. He was crawling, which was another strike against being a totoro, but he was fuzzy.

Chinchillie
"Oh! It's nice to meet you, Gulli," She wiggled her fingers over the baby again, finding her absurdly adorable, "and Thylassa. Um, you don't mind the nickname, do you?"

A few days ago. So they weren't the newest people any more - that was an interesting piece of news, especially since all the Mishaps Sabriel met had been older. Chin hoped he'd like having someone the same age around. But those poor people...new, and having to navigate through this mansion, practically...

"I'm Chinchillie, but usually just plain Chin - that's Sabriel. We've been here about a month, but it's crazy how much this place changed. It'd be nice if they issued new maps. They must not have gotten around to it." It'd be great if there were new maps sometime soon. Getting lost in here wasn't much fun.

What was that thing next to her? It looked a little familiar...he frowned as he placed it, sitting down beside the newt baby, though not necessarily close. An evil guardian. She had one too. Frowning more, even glaring at the totoro, he leaned in and daringly poked Thylassa on the arm. If it really was a guardian, it'd do something about it.

Gullien
"Yeah, that would be nice. I suppose we're lucky to get a map at all though. I was debating painting a big 'X' on our room door just to make sure we'd find it again. Lassa seems to have a pretty good sense of direction though. Have you been here long? Are there many other people here? I haven't seen a soul besides you and Sabriel." Man, if Chin was the only other person, she was going to follow her like a puppy. She and Lassa had both gone a bit stir-crazy by the time the room was done.

Thylassa might a "mmf"-ing noise as Sabiel poked her in the arm. That wasn't nice. This thing was definately not a Totoro. She tore her top two eyes from Chinchillie's fascinating hands and glanced up at Gullien.

Gullien stared back down with interest, tail tapping against the ground. Thylassa didn't seem that upset about being poked. Eh, she'd step in if Lassa started crying or something. That was what you did with human babies, right? Or were they playfighting? Crap, she didn't know.

Lassa huffed as Gullien just watched. Turning back to Sabriel, she popped one of her head-eyes in her mouth and waited for his next move.

Chinchillie
"Uh, Sabriel..." Chin began, a little worried. The poke was followed by silence, no screaming, so she deigned to keep an eye on him for now. She looked up at Gulli and smiled slightly. "Hey, why hadn't I thought of that? We're lucky, though. Right by the balcony. There's a few other people around, but we haven't really run into many."

Perhaps sensing this, she quickly added, "Maybe I could introduce you to someone who knows the place better, who could show us around?" An idea struck her. "Or we could try and make our own map." she suggested, feeling a little foolish. It sounded like a good idea.

Seeing Lassa's annoyed huff, Sabriel grinned at her. Ha! What a crummy guardian! Emboldened, he scootched closer and reached for the eye not stuck in her mouth, probably intending to yank on it.

Gullien
"We're right by the stairs. It makes it easier to find our way around, but the lack of windows is a bit of a downer." Gullien stuck out her tounge. It made her houseplants die even quicker. Although it did give her an excuse for why they kept dying. "On the plus side, the room is warm. Making a map could be fun! We've got all the paper in the world in here." She gestured around. "And I'd love to not be lost anymore. We spent a whole day just looking for the minishop."

Thylassa eyed the scooting Sabriel. One poke she would let slide, but clearly he was planning something worse. Spitting her eye into her hand she pulled it back, aiming for his head.

"Hey, she did that to me too!" Gullien said brightly, watching Thylassa ready the eye-a-pault. "Hurts like a b***h." She confided to Chin.

Chinchillie
"She what?" Thanks to Gullien's comment, she realized what Thylassa was going to do, and found a hand at her mouth - she knew she couldn't stop it, but tried anyways."Sabriel, don't!" she squeaked.

Too late. He ignored her. Unworried by Lassa's threat (she couldn't possibly hurt him, right?), Sabriel closed his fingers around the eye, giving it a good solid yank.

Chin buried her face in her hands, knowing what was coming next.

Gullien
Pull, pull, pull, release

SMACK

"She did that!"

Chinchillie
Sabriel never saw it coming. His mouth opened in a shout of triumph, and was cut off by a faceful of eye-a-pault. Contrary to her previous mood, Chin burst out laughing - she had to stagger into Gullien for support.

"Did you see his face...!"

Gullien
Gullien chuckled too, gently scooping Thylassa into her lap to avoid any possible Sabriel-vengence. The expression on the feral-Mishap's face was pretty priceless. "Like I said," she grinned "the little squirt did that to me too. Right in the eye. She's dangerous with those things. That's what you get for being an instigator." She told Sabriel.

Lassa made an unhappy noise as she was lifted, but settled happily into Gullien's lap, popping one bobble-eye smugly back into her mouth as she flopped backwards and giggled with the adults. Never underestimate hard eyeballs!

Chinchillie
Chin now giggled at the expression Sabriel wore as he got upright again. She made her way to the nearest chair and collapsed into it. "Sounds painful." she agreed sympathetically. "She's a pretty inventive lil tyke, though - no claws or teeth, but she's still dangerous!"

That hurt. And look at her! Thylassa was laughing! He straightened up with dignity and coiled his tails around his feet, trying to look as though it hadn't hurt one bit, and trying to think of some way to get back at her. Sabriel couldn't understand what Gullien was saying, but he glared at her anyways. She was probably being rude.

His ideas fell on the totoro plushie still sitting in the stroller. Hm...

Gullien]"Yeah, she's a little bit of a handful. Not really violent though. I don't she knows how much that eye thing hurts. They're hard, ya know? I suspect she'll be a real pain when she gets big enough to walk, though. Your's looks like a piece of work too though. What are those, whips? He probably does a fair amount of damage when he's in a mood." Gullien settled comfortable on the floor in a cross-legged sit, settling Lassa into the crock of one knee. "I take it he doesn't play nicely with others at all?" She tickled at Lassa's tummy with one hand and quickly scritched behind Sabriel's ears with the other. Definately feral.

Lassa giggled on Gullien's lap, happy to be cuddled. She could still see the other Mishap over Gullien's knee if she craned, but who cared? The other Mishap was poopy. She fixed her gaze on Chin instead, cooing happily. She'd take a nice quite tall person over a mean not-totoro baby anyday. Maybe Chinchille would start chanting again!
[quote="Chinchillie
"Yup, and he usually is in a mood. I'm not sure he likes anyone." Sabriel winced away from Gullien's fingers, surprising Chin a bit - she expected him to swipe. "It's a relief he can't get out of cribs and playpens and stuff - I can't imagine what he'll be like when he can walk." She slid down off the chair to sit on the floor with them.

Chin noticed Thylassa looking and smiled back, elated the baby seemed to like her. And she was so cute! "Hey, 'Lassa." she said with a wave. "Does she like books at all?" she asked Gullien, reminded of the book they'd been reading together before the two came in. Maybe it was because she actually looked like she'd enjoy it, rather than just grumble the entire way through...or something had gone through on a psychic line. Either way.

The mean non-totoro baby found himself ignored, even more annoyed for it. He frowned at the floor, his ears pinned back (they still tingled from the brief scritch) and started pulling at his sweater again. Stupid girl.

Gullien
"Aw, he'll probably calm down when he gets older. Can't stay in a mood forever." Gullien grinned down at the little cat-mishap. Cute. He looked rather like on of her kits from way back when. "I can see him playing rough when he gets older though. Has he teethed yet? I bet you get a lot of chewed stuff."

Lassa fixed her top two eyes on the other human, cooing again and waving her arms happy. It wasn't quite a wave, but it was a good attempt. Me, me! Look at me!

"I'm not sure if she likes books or not. She's still pretty much at the chewing on them stage. But she likes hearing rhythmic voices. Chanting, singing, reading aloud, that kind of stuff. What about this guy?" She waggled her fingers on the ground by Sabriel.

Chinchillie
"Nothing's impossible." She sure hoped he'd grow out of it. "And sort of; there's all these dragon plushies with little puncture marks all over the room, but he hasn't been gnawing on anything else, or not that I've noticed. Maybe they're just really chewable?"

Sabriel gave Gullien's fingers a halfhearted swat, distracted with shredding the sweater. At Lassa's coos, his frown deepened. Oh, that was it...

He withdrew his paw to point it at the totoro plushie, big, innocent eyes fixed on Gulli's face. "Cat?" he asked. Gimme?

Aww! She was waving! Chin waved back using both hands, nearly laughing again as she replied, "Sabriel's more of a music fan; he practically fell asleep today when I was reading to him, right before you guys came in. He's reeeally picky. Aw, you're just the cutest..."

Gullien
Gullien raised an eye at Sabriel, amused by the swat. "You must think I'm the biggest idiot in the world, to think I'm going to give you that after hearing about puncture wounded dragons. Lassa would never forgive me when you ate it, and she'd be right to." Any other plush and she'd be all for it though... other plush... hmm. She leaned back for a moment, bent almost double as she rooted in the stroller's under-carriage. "Here we go!" She tossed him one of the rubber dragons that Lassa seemed to find everywhere. Chewable, durable and not a favorite. Excellent. On retrospect, she pulled out a second for Lassa. "He's pretty cute too." She told Chin, waggling the dragon she held like prey. "Tough little guy. Lassa's a sweetie but she's so fragile. I'm not quite sure how to deal with it. You must really like kids though... have any others?"

Lassa frowned, lower eyes fixing on the dragon Gullien still held. "A bah..." My dragon! Mine! Not his! Give it here. She levered herself up in Gullien's lap, arms reaching for the dragon. Pay attention to me, not him!

Chinchillie
Leaning back against the chair, Chin rested her head on her arms and watched.

"A few. But Aramae's left home, and I didn't want Tene and Sabriel together, at least for now. He's kind of fragile too." Her voice sounded a little guilty. Tenebrion did need a lot of support...and the house could be chaotic at times. "And we have this yellow flower too. Is Lassa really? She seems so...um...well, good at taking care of herself. VERY good." she added in memory of the eye-a-pault.

No! Sabriel didn't want a stupid dragon, he wanted the totoro so she couldn't have it! Was that so much to ask? He bunched the sweater in his paws as fists, but gave Lassa the sweetest smile he could, hearing her complain about her mother's choice. HA.

Ooh. And the dragon was moving...

The cat baby leaned forward intently. Then - POUNCE! both it and Gullien's hand were captured.

Gullien
Gullien chuckled, using the dragon to push Sabriel over on his back and wiggling it into his tummy before withdrawing her hand. Just like playing with a kitten. Snagging the dragon she had initially tossed to Sabriel, she handed it to Lassa, ignoring the puncture wounds Sabriel had left in her hand. She rubbed Lassa's back with her other hand, watching in amusement as Lassa promptly stuck the dragon in her mouth.
"A yellow flower? Eh... she's so-so. She's pretty capable right now. I mean, she doesn't cry much or get her head stuck in the toilet or anything, but she's kinda delicate health-wise. I've never really been like that or known anyone like that, so it's a little intimidating. I'm not always sure what triggers her either. She is inventive though. I'll definately give her that."

Lassa beamed around her mouthful of dragon. Stupid sweater baby. Her guardian was HERS. She didn't even care if he got her other dragon. She still got all the attention. She beamed up at Gullien and Chinchille, drool running down her chin as she gummed the dragon to death. If that non-Toroto tried anything, she'd fling a dragon at him.

Chinchillie
Aiee! He latched onto the dragon and tried unsuccessfully to bite it before it was lifted away for Thylassa. It was such an unexpected move that he caught himself purring into the silence. A quiet, clunky sort of rumble, but it was there.

Sabriel looked so mortified that Chin had to grin, scooping him up into her own lap. "Yup, a flower. She's supposed to be a fairy or something. Gah! Sabriel!" She yelped a little as the baby bit down on her hand - he'd obviously recovered. Prying Sabriel loose, she resettled him facing the other way, making sure he couldn't try anything else.

"Ohh, I see." She nodded, thinking off all sorts of reasons why Thylassa could have delicate health. Maybe her extra eyes needed glasses; Gullien would probably start laughing if she voiced that particular thought. "If you...ever need any help," she offered, a little tentatively, "I'd be glad to come over. Though I'm not exactly an expert. Just if it'd be good to have someone helping out, then..."

Sabriel stuck his tongue out at Lassa, sulking across from her. It was his dragon. Grumble.

Gullien
Gullien snorted as Sabriel bit Chinchille. "Bite him back." she offered simply. Hell, it had worked on her kits. It worked on most kits. Otherwise mother mammals would let their babies starve before they let them breastfeed.
"A fairy? Like, the traditional European winged kind? Man, the damnest things crop up around Gaia, don't they? I can't really talk though. I've got a Nimue watching over Lassa if I have to go out. They're... eh, kinda like wingless fairies, I suppose. But elemental."

Lassa inserted the dragon perhaps a little TOO far into her mouth and began coughing as she triggered a gag reflex. Gullien quickly pulled the dragon from the mouth and patted her back, but Lassa had already gone into a coughing fit. The sounds echoed in the library for a long moment until Lassa coughed up a small amount of salivia. Leaning against Gullien she wheezed slightly and promptly stuck an eyeball in her mouth.

Gullien patted her back again, looking worried until the baby settled down. "Bleah. Can you hand me some tissue from the stroller?" Since the patting seemed to be unneeded, she ran a hand through Lassa's hair instead. "Yeah, assistance is always nice. She's my first human baby, y'know? Although, as long as we're talking about assistance, what do you say to making that map? If she ever chokes of something for real, it'd be good to know where to take her."

Chinchillie
"Bite him back?" Chin made a face. "You can if you want." Hm...she'd assumed Bununu-bloom was going to have wings, since most fairies did, but thinking of it, it hadn't really been mentioned. Wings would be better. She could fly away if Sabriel attacked or something, which he undoubtably would given the opportunity.

Following Gullien's request, she leaned around Sabriel and pulled the stroller closer, fishing out a box of tissues from amid a mess of things. She handed them over, watching Thylassa in a worried way. "Is she all right? Good idea -and it could even be fun."

Sabriel, on the other hand, was delighted. That's what you got when you messed with Sah!

Thylassa burbled unhappily from behind the warding ofuda as Gullien wrestled the tree upright. Granted, Gullien didn't have any magic. But she did know a good jutsu to ward off magic and Thylassa contained enough magic to count. She felt a little bad warding the kid out of part of the room like she was a poltergeist, but she'd feel worse taking the kid to the ER with a candy cane embedded in her forehead.

"Aaaaaa!" Thylassa whined, miserably. She wasn't interested in the ball Gullien had tossed to her or the rattle Mona has attempted waving about. The candy cane that was now stuck to her shirt had distracted her for a while, but it couldn't compare to this. This thing! It was shiny. And BLUE. And it made a cool noise, and it was big, and it was SHINY and she couldn't touch it. There was a big invisible wall around it that let Gullien in and life wasn't fair.

"Mooooona!" Gullien whined, equally miserable as she wrestled with the tree. It wasn't big, only 4 feet tall or so, but it was a cheap artifical tree and didn't seem to fit into its holder. Gullien had been wrestling with it for quite a while now and was quite ready to just leave it lying on the floor. She winced as an ornament crashed to the ground and Thylassa's whimpers increased.

"Are you sure you were supposed to put the ornaments and lights on before you put it upright?"

"Hell if I know! I've never put up one of these things before. I don't even know WHY people put these things up. Can't you just keep Lassa entertained and NOT offer commentary?"

Mona sniffed and resumed darting around Lassa, transforming from Nim to water and back again in mid-air. It was usually a sight that fascinated Lassa but today she was clearly not giving up on the tree. Shiny. The tree was shiny, the balls on the tree were shiny and made a lovely noise and more shinies when they hit the floor and the ropes around the tree so it couldn't run away were shiny too. Waaaaant.

Gullien made a sound of triumph as the tree finally slotted into it's base. Even the crashing of another ornament and the crunch of glass under her shoes as she walked to the outlet couldn't dim her enthusiam.
"Ready?" She called to the Nim and the babe. At their various noises of agreement, she triumphantly plugged in the tree.

Thylassa cooed, clapping her sticky hands as the tree lit up. MORE shinies. It made all the pieces on the floor look beautiful. She gurgled as Gullien stepped over the barrier again, holding up her arms for cuddles. If she couldn't get to the tree, she could at least get to Gullien.

Gullien dropped cross-legged to the floor and grimaced as she quickly scooped a very sticky Thylassa into her lap.
"Mona, could you, maybe..."
"No way!"
The little nim, still admiring the tree, crossed her arms. She was not a washcloth. Gullien sighed but endulged in a snuggle with Lassa anyway. Sticky but sweet. The three of them simply sat, admiring the tree and it's lights. The shards made things look particularly festive.

"Now what?"
"Not sure. But if a fat guy in a robo suit tries to get in here, I'm gonna break his neck."

Gullien snuck into the room quietly. Ninja training wasn't always an equal to sharp little baby senses, as surreal as that seemed. Thylassa didn't even stir though. She was completely passed out, cuddled on her tummy on the futon with a blanket corner in one hand and the totoro ear in the other. Mona was sleeping curled on Thylassa's back, where any movements from the child would wake her. They were... sweet. Really really sweet. And utterly unconcious. Thylassa had been beginning to graduate from scooting to crawling. She must have kept Mona running all afternoon. Hopefully Gullien hadn't missed seeing Thylassa's first crawl or anything else special.

Ah, but what else could she do? Christmas meant Christmas presents, even she knew that. She didn't want to cause Thylassa eternal trauma for ruining her first Christmas or something. Besides... she wanted Thylassa to have a nice first Christmas. Hell, it was her first Christmas too, really.

Crouching by the tree, she opening her shopping bag and began placing items. Most of them were freebies that shops had been giving away. She felt a bit bad about that but what could she do? She hadn't exactly been budgeting for a child and winter was a very slow time for the koi. At Thylassa's age, the most important thing was that the presents were there, right? She'd probably just chew on them and forget about them.

Gullien eyed the meager selection. Not much, but it was something, right?
Sighing, she sat under the tree eyeing the presents. If she was doing everything right: the tree, the presents... why did it feel so empty? She was just throwing impersonal presents at the kid and celebrating a holiday she didn't even understand because everyone else was. Was there a point?

....

Well, yeah. Thylassa's face when she saw the tree lit was worth it. And the expression she would have when she ripped open all these gifts would be worth it too. Not so much a holiday then as a big birthday for Thylassa. Decorations and presents and all. Yeah... yeah!
If she thought of it as a birthday for Lassa then it finally made sense. Smiling, she crawled from beneath the tree and over to the sleeping beauties on the futon. Scooping Lassa in one hand, she carefully listed the babe onto her stomach. Lassa sighed hugely, but didn't stir. Unconcious indeed. Mona she caught in the other and gently placed on the pillow. Mona blinked sleepily and simply cuddled into Gullien's shoulder.

"Happy Birthday, Lassa." She grinned at the sleeping toddler. "I'll give you a real birthday someday. A birthday that isn't a holiday, just for you. But for now, this is your secret birthday. Even if everyone else celebrates Christmas, the two of us will know what today really is."

Gullien gently cuddled the baby, content in a way she rarely was as she smiled down on aqua hair.

Gullien shot awake as the crackling noise sounded from the doorway. She stared about the room for a moment, taking inventory of her surrondings while one hand quickly triggered the switchblade she kept beneath her pillow. Where had that noise come from?

"Calm down." Mona whispered from the doorwell, fluttering over... something. Paper?
"You got a letter. Nothing big. Put the knife away before you stab Thylassa by accident."

Although Mona whispered, Thylassa was already whimpering and thrashing. In a few moments she would be fully awake and in full howl. The kid slept deeply, but she hated being woken up. Gullien sighed and rose to her feet before the storm could get started. Snatching the paper she took a glance at it.

Thylassa woke up screaming and snotting as Gullien finished reading the letter. Sighing, Gullien pinned it to the wall with the switchblade before walking over to comfort the little Mishap.

A party huh? Could be fun...

"Okay!" Gullien announced, rather louder than she needed to to the empty room as she buckled Thylassa's stroller belt. The little Mishap was cutely outfitted in a little Christmas dress complete with hat and was happily clutching a snowglobe intended for their unknown host.
"We're getting ready to LEAVE now!"
Gullien, as usual, hadn't bothered to dress up, but she was proud of Lassa's dress. She wasn't a great seamstress, but she could manage from time to time. Granted, she'd usually just mended uniforms or flesh in the past, but the concept followed over.
"We're gooooing!" She called out as she wheeled Thylassa out the door. Normally the little Mishap would be staring at her guardian and her bizarre behavior, but she was much too occupied with the snowglobe now. Shake, shake, shake, WHEE!
"Good- BYE!"

SLAM

Seconds ticked by in the quiet apartment as the squeak of the stroller wheels faded into the distance. All was quiet... but just momentarily.

"I think they're gone!"
"You think?"

The closet door creaked open, and four little Nimue emerged, pulling at the large package. Mona was in the lead, straining at the weight, but the three Nimue after her with rainbow markings and unusual butterfly wings didn't seem bothered by their burden at all.

"Okay, stick it here!"

The Nimue abandoned the package next to the tree. Gullien had had to take down the jitsus for them to get near it, but it was only while Lassa was away. Nothing much could happen.
The package thumped down inelegantly, prompting a half-hearted growl from its inhabitant, who had been well bribed with fish to sit quietly in the present for a night.
"Okay! Thanks everyone!" Mona annouced, patting the package gently. "You all know how to get back again?" The leader of the other Nimue, a wingless rainbowed beauty nodded imperatively, before gesturing her daughters to her and darting out the door.
"Whew!" Mona sighed, fanning her face. A heavy package AND having to work with Spectrum, scariest of Gullien's Nimue. Gullien owed her big time.
She lifted off to take a quick bath in the sink, but made sure the package's tag was right-side up before she went.

To Thylassa,
Love Gullien

There wasn't any noise when it appeared. Just a simple slow curl of white smoke up from the floor, forming a curve, a spiral and slowly, slowly the head of a fox. It opened lambent eyes, shaking its head and looking about even as its body was still being formed of slow curls of smoke.

It had been waiting a long time for the jitsus to fall.

A small twist of color formed along its colorless back, shooting up to form a small kimono-patterned package carefully tied with Shinto knots to the fox's back. For a short moment, the fox just sat, nine tails twitching slightly as it listened intently.

No noise but the chirp of preycreature in another room, the snore of a larger creature in the box next to it. There was no one of importance here.

It did not shrug off the package, or pull it off, or any other inelegant method. It simply dissolved from below it, floating fluidly to reform above, lowering the package to the ground without the slightest noise.

It listened once more and then abruptly disappeared, leaving no noise or trace besides the present. It's mistress would be pleased.

The present sat neatly below the the tree, hidden behind Thylassa's surprise. The tag simply read:

To my knife-

Silencer Wolf

"Late again, as always." A sigh escaped Silencer as she stepped through the doorway into the beautifully decorated ballroom. The girl was dressed casually in a Toscano zip front cardigan sweater with a white sleeveless turtleneck underneath and a pair of black pants, which look suspiciously like the one she usually wore. Curled around her neck was a fluffy white fox, whose bright golden eyes peered around the room curiously as Silencer turned around to Rex and waved him in, her face all smiles.

Rex emerged a second later, a very grumpy tyrannosaurus behind him. The boy too was dressed casually, though in a light, earthier tone compared to Silencer's all black(well, almost) attire. The boy gazed around the room pleasantly, his face brightening up at the sight of Ike.

"HI IKE!"

Gullien
Gullien peeked through the doorway, rather overwhelmed by the large decorated room and the number of people she didn't know. She was rather late... although she also gotten rather lost, which would account for it. Still, it looked like she'd missed the critical time when everyone was just meeting each other and still making introductions. Almost everyone had already branched off into little clusters. Well... not everyone... noticing a brown-haired woman nearby (another late-comer?), Gullien decided to take a chance and head for her. Clutching her invitation in one hand, Gullien wheeled Thylassa's stroller into the room.

Thylassa sat proudly in her stroller. Unlike Gullien, she'd dressed up for the occasion in a cute little red dress and hat, with dagger-holes punched in it for her bobbles. In her lap was a snowglobe, purchased for the host of the party. It was pretty and fragile and very hard for her to resist sticking in her mouth, but the threat of Gullien taking it away was too strong for her to act on.

Xiao Ling
"Ah, thanks," Xiao Ling replied after Rabid explained, looking at the portal for some time. "I don't think I'll be going there, the party is nice," she continued, before heading towards the buffet table.

Kunjiro followed his mother when she walked towards the buffet table. He was interested in all the food on the buffet table, but he was too short to reach the food. He walked off and sat beside the snowman, feeling dissapointed. Not long after that, he saw a familiar face joining the party. "Is that Big?" he said in a small voice.

"Huh, Big?" said Xiao Ling, as she was walking to where Kunjiro was. "Hey, isn't that Rex?" she exclaimed, walking towards them. She thuoght that it would be better to be with other people than standing there and eat alone.

Silencer Wolf
Silencer's gaze followed her charge's briefly, before wandering off to the rest of the room. Her gaze fell on the newcomer(late-comer like herself just then and she smiled at the approaching guardian, waving to the new face.

"Hello there!"

Rex was just about to run off in the direction of his furry friend when a familiar female voice caught him in his tracks. "Hm?" Turning around, the boy smiled when he saw Xiao Ling and Kunjiro. Boy, the two families sure bumped into each other a lot lately, didn't they?

"'Ey Kunjiro-mum and Kunjiro!"

King, meanwhile, simply glared daggers at everything in the finely decorated ballroom, from the blue and silver decorations to the chairs, tables, people, snowman... everything. A foul mood he had indeed been for the past two days, growling and snapping at every living thing that dared to approach him.

All these, however, changed when the tyrannosaurus cought sight of... the buffet table. Food!

A rumble of excitement escaped King as he attempted to get to the table, pulling heavily in its direction.

"Chrr! Rurr-chrak..."

Gullien
Gullien smiled back, relieved that the other female seemed friendly. "Hey." She said in response, waving her non-invitation holding hand slightly and wheeling Thylassa over. "Let me guess." She said ruefully, "you were a little late too?"

Thylassa smiled up at the new person, offering the snowglobe like she was pretty sure she was supposed to do. Shiny, shiny, shiny, for you!

Xiao Ling
"Hi," Xiao Ling replied, putting what she took from the table on the floor. "We often meet each other," she continued. She then walked to where Silencer and a new guardian was and held out her right hand as she introduced herself. "I'm Xiao Ling, nice to meet you," she smiled and turned to Silencer. "How are you?"

"Hello!" Kunjiro said, eating the food from the plate that was placed on the floor. "What your name? I forgot to ask you," he continued, before stuffing the food into his mouth. He then walked off to where his guardian was and found himself meeting another mishap, who had blue hair and markings.

Silencer Wolf
"Ahah, yes." Silencer replied, a sheepish grin on her face. She returned the little mishap's smile with her own, and crouched down to be on the same level as her.

"Hello, little one. What's your name?" Silencer's smile widened as Thylassa held out the snowglobe to her. Little did she realise the gift was not intended for her. "For me? Thank you!" She took the snowglobe into her hands gently, and gave the dear little thing a peck on her cheek.

"You must be one of the newer guardians here, aren't you?" Silencer said, straightening up and smiling warmly at Gullien. "Late, I know, but welcome, my friend. I'm Silencer and you are...?"

"'Ey Xiao Ling. Good, I must say. How about you?"

Rex cocked an eyebrow at Kunjiro's antic and shrugged, smiling. "Rexier Gaver. Just call me Rex though, it's shorter. And my twin brother here," the boy turned his head a little, "is King."

"Um... you shouldn't at things placed on the floor." The boy spoke after a pause, scratching his right temple. "It's not healthy, y'know. If you want, we can get some fresher food from the buffet table."

Come on already, I'm starved! King snapped, and pulled in the direction of the buffet table with more force, causing Rex to almost stumble, but caught himself in time.

Okay, okay. Sighing a relief, Rex started in the direction of the table, before catching sight of Deimos. Ah, just the person he'd been looking for!

"Deimos! Hey Dei, I need to talk to you!"

Gullien
Gullien cringed a bit as Silencer took the snowglobe, but what could she do? It would be rude to take it back and she'd probably ruin Thylassa forever on sharing. Besides, it was unlikely she'd find the host this late in the party anyways. If she did, she had other stuff. Stuffed totoro, chewed plastic dragon... yeah.
"Ah, I'm Gullien. This is Thylassa." She indicated the cooing Mishap with a thumb. "We're both pretty new. I just got here at the start of this month. So actually this is our first Christmas." She grinned, leaning on the cart a little. "Are you a guardian here as well? Or an employee of the shop or...?" She really didn't have any idea of who was here or if they all had Mishaps. Not having any idea of who her neighbors were made her very nervous, really. She hated a gap in critical knowledge.

Thylassa cooed, clapping her hands as the new bigperson took the snowglobe from her and rewarded her with a lip-touch to the cheek. Curious, she clasped one hand on the cheek as the bigperson withdrew. What was that?

Silencer Wolf
Silencer juggled the snowglobe a little and hugged it close to her - it looked so darn fragile and beautiful, she was sure her heart would break if the thing slipped, fell and broke into pieces. Busy with the snowglobe, the girl missed Gullien's reaction.

Finally she looked up, and grinned at Gullien. "Oh, okay. Merry Christmas, Gullien, Thylassa." She shook her at at the word 'staff', and waved her hand in the direction of the tallest figure among a group of other mishaps and people.

"Guardian." Came the simple reply. "That's my boy there, the one sticking out from the group. Easy to spot. With that she chuckled, and shifted the snowglobe around in her arms again.

King munched happily on the food stuffed into his mouth by his twin earlier, his rumbling one of a content rather than anger and irritation. Mm...

It was just then that he noticed Lenore looking up at him, and the tyrannosaur blinked down back at her.

"Rrrrr?

""Nice to meet you, Len." Rex nodded, and smiled at Lenore. "Come on, to the lake!" The boy exclaimed, excitement clear in his voice, his action, everything.

Gullien
Gullien whistled, staring over the at the tall two-headed kid standing near a wing-headed boy and a girl with... bladed arms. Huh. Looks like she didn't have the only humaniod kid after all. "Wow. He's got some height to him. How old is he?" She glanced over again at Silencer, grinning slightly at the care the other woman was taking with the snowglobe. Wrong person to take it, but right person to give it to then. "How long have you been here?" She'd never actually thought about how long she'd been here.

Thylassa nodded at the words "Merry Christmas", still confused by the face-touched. Sensing more face-touches probably weren't forthcoming, she tuned out the bigpeople, sticking a bobble-eye in her mouth as she glanced around the room. Big, big, big, pointyarms, flying eyebrows, white fluffy... probably not a totoro. She sighed, remembering Sabriel. Avoid the fluffy ones.

Silencer Wolf
"Mishap-wise, he's a kid now. No idea how old he is in human terms. Ten, eleven maybe?" Silencer shrugged, smiling at Rex, Deimos and Lenore as they passed by.

Silencer turned her attention back to Gullien then, and grinned happily at Gullien. "I got Rex on the twenty-seventh of July, so..." The girl frowned, counting the months between back then and the present.

"About five months. Wow, has it been that long already?" Silencer smiled, and shook her head. "My, time sure flies."

Xiao Ling
"I'm good," the guardian replied, turning back to look at Kunjiro for a while. "But I don't think Kunjiro is. He's getting lazier since winter."

"Rex and King? Okay," Kunjiro replied, leaving some mushroom spores on the food as he turned. "It's okay, Mom just got them. Not dirty." he continued.

Gullien
Gullien shook her head, slightly shocked. Ten years in five months... "What exactly is a Mishap life-span, do you know?" She asked Silencer. She wasn't raising a mayfly here, was she? That was a depressing thought... "It's just... he seems to have grown so quickly in such a short span of time."

Thylassa chewed on her eye thoughtfully as the other children she had been watching left. The only ones left around her now were adults. Boring. Even Sabriel was better than just sitting here.

Silencer Wolf
"Ah? How come?" Silencer asked at Xiao Ling's statement and looking over at the toddler. "If he is, then I certainly can't tell. He looks fine to me now, but meh. You're his guardian, so... 24 hour surveillance compared to just a few minutes from me," she said, laughing a little.

Just then she caught Gullien's question and frowned, then shook her head.

"Good question. You know, I've never thought of that," she said, looking down at Thylassa. "Now that you've mentioned it, I'm beginning to wonder myself." Her expression was one of worry as she glanced around the room at the other guardian, some of which she knew. Would they know?

Ah, but surely Jabir or Maggie knew? They were, after all, the ones who set up and ran the adoption agency. "Perhaps we can check it out whith Jabir or Maggie?" Silencer asked thoughtfully, stroking the snowglobe in her arms while the little white fox that had been curled on her head slithered down the girl and up onto Thylassa's stroller to sniff at the little one curiously.

Rex swept into the room just then, sending the fox skittering behind Thylassa. The boy stopped in front of his mother and handed her a large black void of a pearl, before turning and nodded to Gullien and Thylassa with a friendly smile on his face.

"Hello, uh..." he began.

"Gullien."

"Miss Gullien. And ei..."

"Thylassa"

"Thylassa." Grin.

Gullien
Gullien nodded to Rex, raising an eyebrow at the pearl he was nonchalantly holding. "Nice to meet you, Rex." She greeted, nodding at the tall Mishap. Glancing over, she caught sight of another woman talking to Silencer. Another guardian? "I'm sorry, I've meet Maggie very briefly... who's this Jabir? Another guardian?" she asked Silencer. "Or does he co-own the shop?" She glanced curiously over at the other woman as she waited for Silencer's reply.

Thylassa made an eager grab for the fox as it went by, only to miss it completely as a large shadow loomed over the stroller. Forgetting the fox, she looked up and up and up. "Aaaa!" She called up, loosing the eye from her mouth and waving with both hands. Big thing. Big taily thing, like Gullien! Grab the tail?

Silencer Wolf
Rex returned a nod of his own to Gullien, before turning and showered little Thylassa with warm smiles and grins. Noticing her interest in his tail, the boy crouched and waved it around in front of her in a teasing manner, while King looked on indifferently.

"Ah. Yes, erm. Gullien, Xiao Ling. Xiao Ling, Gullien." Silencer moved aside and motioned the two guardian to each other, fidgeting slightly. Introduction done? She was never good with them.

"Jabir," she began, "Is pretty much in charge of this place alongside. He's a mishap too - Maggie's, if I'm not wrong." Silencer nodded a little hesitantly. Eh.

Just then, Silencer snapped her head around as Rabid's announcement rang out into the ballroom. "Over already?" Looking at her own watch, the girl 'ah'-ed, and gave her charge, who was still playing with Thylassa, a few nudges.

"Mm?" Rex looked up from Thylassa to his mother.

"It's time, we have to go now."

"Okay."

Silencer turned to Gullien, as Rex gave the little young one a gentle pat one the head. "Well, it seems like we have to go now," she said, glancing from Gullien to Xiao Ling, then back to the former. "It's been nice meeting you and Thylassa, hope to see both of you around the HQ sometime. Happy New Year!"

"And you too!" Silencer added, turning to the guardian who had been so silent all the while. She shook hands with both guardians and their charges, then both mishap and guardian smiled and bowed slightly before waving and started heading for the door.

Gullien
Gullien offered a wave goodbye to Silencer and Rex's backs as they walked out. The head thing on Rex's back may have waved back, or being flailing, or something. Let's assume waving. Well, Silencer and Rex seemed nice and now she knew a little more about the people who ran Magical Mishaps. Glancing over the other guardian and her little Mishap, she smiled hesitantly.
"Ah, hello. I didn't see you standing there? Are you heading out too?"
She could hear a small gurgle from Lassa. It was pretty late.
"We're probably going to head to the kitchen for a midnight snack or something if you want to come too..."

Lassa signed unhappily as the tail retreated. But, but, but! The big other kid patted her on the head, prompting a giggle before he left. Booo! A bit tired and rather over-stimulated, Thylassa gurgled, looking around. Everyone seemed to be leaving? No, there was someone Gullien was talking too. A big person with another kid? She couldn't quite see.

Xiao Ling
"Goodbye!" said Xiao Ling when Silencer and the other mishap left the room, before turning to Gullien. "Erm, sure. I'd like to join," she replied.

Kunjiro waved at them as they left the place, and sighed as he turned. "Rex's leaving, no one else to play with." he thought. He then noticed a girl not far from him, and walked towards her. "Hallo!" he said.

Gullien
"Great!" Gullien replied, smiling at the other guardian and what she assumed was her (what was that kid, a plant?) Mishap. "It's not far from here. I've gotten pretty good at finding where the food is at." She glanced down at the little Mishap, but judging from the speed people were using to leave the room, it was probably best to do introductions in the kitchen. "Let's go."

The yank of the stroller surprised Lassa and she glanced up at and around. She had a quick glance of a neat-colored kid with a big hand before she was pointed at the door. They were leaving already? She stuck one hand out and waved to the hat-boy. She had to pull it back in quick though as the stoller passed through the door.

Gullien took a look around the hallway to get her bearings. Right. Trusting the other guardian and Mishap to follow, she pointed herself and the stroller in what was hopefully the right direction. Kitchen ho!

RP with Kunjiro and Xiao Ling

Gullien

Gullien pushed the stroller through the swinging door, glancing around. No one else was here, per usual. Maybe the other guardians ate in a lot or something. She glanced behind her, hearing Xiao Ling and the Mishap kid following. Cool, everyone was here then and they hadn't lost one forever in the hall. "So." She said to Xiao Ling, wheeling Thylassa next to one of the counters. "You know me and I know you, but I don't think the kids have been introduced. This is Thylassa." She gestured down to the little Mishap, who was rubbing one eye (face, left) and looking around with interest.

Xiao Ling

Xiao Ling smiled at Thylassa, then waved towards her charge, who seemed to have left her side for a different, more interesting place. The girl sweat-dropped at the empty space beside her, before catching sight of Kunjiro heading towards the fridge.

"Uh, my boy, he's Atsutoshi Kunjiro. You can just call him Kunjiro, and right now.. well..."

Upon entering the kitchen, Kunjiro's attention was instantly on the food storage area. The boy made a straight beeline towards the fridge, and, grabbing the handle with both hands, succeeded in opening it. A quite 'waaah' escaped the boy's lips as he peered up at the food stored inside.

Xiao Ling just shook her head at her mishap's food-orientated behaviour, smiling slighty. She returned her attention towards Gullien and her charge, an apologetic expression on her face. "Sorry about Kunjiro's behaviour. He's probably still hungry, I don't think he ate much during the ball."

Gullien

Gullien cocked her head at the name. "Is he Japanese?" She asked with interest. It'd been a long time since she'd met someone from Nippon. "Oh, don't worry about the food." She said, waving a hand. "We're just as hungry. Neither of us got anything to eat at the party at all. Were you late too?" Meandering over the the fridge, she peered over Kunjiro's shoulder, hands in pockets. Bottle... bottle... didn't they have any bottles in here? C'mon, this place was lousy with babies! Sighing, she began opening cabinets.

Thylassa yawned quietly and stuck one eye in her mouth, sucking on it like a pacifier. Hungry and sleepy and she couldn't figure out which one she wanted to do more, sleep or eat. Hungry, but there wasn't any food yet; sleepy, but interesting things were still going on. She simply settling on watching Kunjiro and Xiao Ling curiously. Hopefully food would be forthcoming.

Gullien yawned mightly, surrounded by wrapping paper, bows and chaos. A small mechanical Western dragon, bow still on his head, marched by uttering "Roar. Roar." in a very lackluster voice, while an equally mechanical penquin lay on it's side nearby gleefully singing something about a figgy pudding, whatever that was.

Thylasa had been a bit leery of the presents at first, poking carefully at the bright paper and then simply staring up at Gullien blankly. They were clearly the first wrapped presents she'd ever gotten. She'd caught on alarmingly quickly though. She'd gone from shy to estatic in about three seconds and was currently perched on Gullien's lap wearing only a diaper and gleefully motoring through one present after another, toys flying through the air.

Even Mona was enjoying the festive season. She'd been a bit ambivalent at first, but that had changed quickly enough when Gullien presented her with a box full of shiny marbles and a small and beautiful blue pottery bowl. The bowl now sat on the bookshelf far away from little hands. Gullien could hear Mona splashing in it as she arranged and rearranged her marbles. At least, she could hear her in between penguin songs.

"Eeee!" Thylassa shrieked, as she finally pulled all the paper away to reveal... something. Some freebie or another that Gullien had found of an unknown plush animal. Thylassa cuddled it happily before setting it aside as a roadblock for the dragon. "Aaa?"

Gullien glanced around. Where they finally... yes, yes, looked like that was it. Thank god.

"Hmmm. Looks like there's no more presents, Thylassa!"
"Awwww..."

Lassa's shoulders slumped as she stared at the giant present under the tree that Gullien hadn't given her. Not for Lassa?
"Unless... do you see another present?"
"Es! Es!" Lassa pointed eagerly. Big present!
"Where is it? Is it over there?"
"Eeee!"
"On the ceiling?"
"Eee-eeee!"
"Under the tree?"
"ESSS!" Thylassa shouted triumphantly. Gullien scooted the Mishap off her lap and stood, shaking out her legs and padding over to the big gift. She gently shook it, waking up its inhabitant.
"Looks like we're ready to open the big one. Wanna give me a hand Mona?" A little wet head popped out of the bowl. The Nim pouted, but obligingly flew down to land on Lassa's shoulder.
"Okay, Thylassa. This is a special gift, okay? He's going to be a new friend for you, but he might be a little scared so just sit quietly while he comes out, okay?"
Thylassa nodded, eyes huge.

Gullien swiftly pulled the bow off the top of the present and opened the top. Gleaming eyes looked up at her for a moment and she slowly tilted the box onto its side. There was a scuffling noise, a moment of silence and Polar stepped out of his box with a graceful slide and the stink of fish. Thylassa gasped, little hands flying up to cover her mouth as she stared at the creature.

User Image

Gullien watched the griffin warily. The store owner had promised that the creature was gently and that it was as intelligent as a young child, but Gullien could see how much damage that beak and those huge paws could do if the animal chose. For the moment however, Polar seemed more interested in the room than Thylassa. Polar pawed at the wrapping paper surronding him and slowly walked in a circuit around the room, taking a moment to mark the bookshelf (great) and sniff? at every crevice and corner. He kept up a running dialouge of sounds as he did so. Nothing audible, just a constant stream of mumbles and grumbles as he investigated.

Finally satisfied that he knew his enviroment well, Polar strolled back to the tree and sat himself in front of Lassa, staring into her face. Gullien braced herself to rush forward if she had too. Eye to eye staring was often the opening act to a brawl if the other party didn't back down.

Lassa didn't back down. Expression still deeply fascinated, she reached up and grabbed the griffin's beak. Polar's head shot back, Gullien and Mona began to shot forward and Polar began to emit a deep creaking noise. Gullien already had her hands under Lassa's arms and was preparing to lift when she realized the noise was... something like laughter. The hell kinda animal was this? Well... the shopkeeper did say it wasn't quite normal.

Thylassa gurgled laughter back, clapping her hands at the griffin. Grinning hugely, she looked around and grabbed the stuffed polar bear off of her dragon speedtrap.
"Eee?"
Polar delicately took the toy from her and shook his head violently, sending the little limbs of the bear shaking. Rumbling happily, he plonked down next to Lassa to give the toy a good chewing. Lassa reached on grasping little hand and akwardly patted him on the head.

Mona sighed deeply and then turned a cheeky grin to Gullien. "Looks like he's here to stay. Let's get his stuff out of the closet!" The little Nim fluttered happily to the closet, eager to amaze Lassa with all of Polar's items. Gullien followed her at a sedate pace, very carefully not looking at the delicate package now partially covered by Polar's box.

Mizuko.

With the setting of the sun and cleaning of the most prevalent crap, the holiday season had apparently come completely to a close. Lassa lay on what should have been the futon, but was actually more of a mound of new toys. She was slumbering as happily as any dragon with its hoard. Polar was curled up at the foot of the futon, despite protests and vigorous pointing at his new basket. Gullien was staring at her unopened present.

It looked innocent enough, all fabric wrapping paper and delicate knots. Nothing from Mizuko was ever innocent or uncomplicated. Gullien hadn't been her kogatana in years. She didn't intend to ever be her knife again.
Apparently it was time to remind Mizuko of that again.

She slit the fabric with her switchblade with little ceramony and great caution. She'd expected any mydriad of unpleasant or sharp objects. The mirror came as a surprise.

It was all smooth woods and egotistical fox carvings and there were four small handmirrors to match. Much to her disgust, it had kogatana engraved on the top. Small sword. It had a spell of some kind woven into it, that was certain, but what? Nothing on the frame... nothing triggered by the back of the mirror... it wasn't until Gullien ran her hands over the old and hated kanji that the mirror reacted.

"Hurry up, Sabriel!"

The toddler bit at his shoulder and ruffled the fur. At the irritated glare he tossed her, Chin actually stepped back, still nervous about the 'new' Sabriel, what with the claws and tails and all - okay, he could catch up if he wanted to. After checking to make sure the New Year's card was there, she knocked on Gullien and Thylassa's door. "Hello?"

She really hoped they were there - she had a 'thankyou' note ready, but it wasn't the same in person. And the two kids could visit with each other. That'd be good.
