Roseth put on her haughtiest expression. They may say whatever they want of me. They can say I am the most stubborn dragon in the Weyr, if they want. I will fly with my sisters or not at all.

Of course, that was ridiculous. Any dragon from a blue on up could force her to fly if they exerted enough effort, but Roseth meant to make them work for it. She thought she could be that stubborn. Not that she'd yet had to pit her will against that of a "higher" color. But she did know that she didn't believe in the idea that there were colors higher than herself. She was...outside of the color hierarchy because she was so wonderful. And she supposed her clutchmates were, too, since they were nearly as wonderful as she.

"I suppose," Jasrai said doubtfully. She hadn't heard that dragons tended to speak to people who weren't their riders on a regular basis, though in the case of this clutch it seemed more reasonable than it might for others. "It would certainly be an interesting change to hear yet another voice in my head. It must be a bit like going crazy."

She'd known someone who heard voices, back when she lived in High Telgar Hold. They'd been mostly harmless, and as a child she'd found the man fascinating. His expression and carriage would change whenever his voice changed, and he'd become someone else, refusing even to answer to his name. Even when he did answer to his own name, he still carried on conversations with people who weren't there. As she'd gotten older, Jasrai had begun to avoid the man because it wasn't such a great idea to be seen in his company even though he had continued to fascinate her. She hadn't thought about him in ages.

We should, yes. Go, I mean, Roseth answered. She nudged the door open and slipped through. Anyone else who wanted to follow was welcome to do so, but she wasn't going to wait for them any longer.

"Right," Kannaroth hopped lightly off her bed, sending Y'ar who had been leaning on her sprawling. "Come on Mine," she chided as she trotted after her sister, "we are hungry." Now that she was aware of the state of her belly, she wasn't prepared to wait any longer than absolutely necessary. Hers had better hurry up and follow her, or she was going to be seriously annoyed with him.

Y'kar righted himself as the small green stepped out of the door, and brushed himself free of straw before setting off after her. "I don't know if it was like going crazy," he said to Jasrai with a shrug, "but it was certainly very... very different. I don't really know how to describe it." So many things were like that with dragons, it was probably best to just accept them and move on. "I guess you have to experience it for yourself," he went on eventually with a shrug, "I expect Kanna or Nellath will have a reason to talk to you directly eventually." If it was Kannaroth, she might well be asking Jasrai to give him a good hard slap for doing something that displeased her; when she couldn't do something herself the bright green certainly wasn't above the use of minions.

"Well, I won't be waiting with baited breath. Between myself and Roseth, I've really got enough people in my head."

Jasrai reluctantly left her place at the hearth. She was nice and toasty warm, but she knew that feeling would leave her on the walk from the weyrling barracks to the dining hall. It was warm in the kitchen, which was the only good thing she could think of about the place, but she would probably be banned from there if things kept on like this. On her way out the door the brunette grabbed a wool tabard that would help her preserve her heat a little longer. Winter was definitely coming, and Jasrai always fared poorly during that season. A selfish part of her couldn't wait for Roseth to grow large enough to act as her own personal thermal bed.

"Other than a trip to the springs, how was your day?" Jasrai asked while pulling the tabard on over her outfit. She wasn't going to win any awards for being the most fashionable person in the Weyr, and the layers probably added to the perception of pudginess. For the immediate future, she didn't care.

"My day..." Y'kar slipped back into character as they headed into more public areas. "It was alright I guess... I had to help out with cleaning the beast pens, the crafters made fun of how small Kannaroth is." Hunching his shoulders, he shrugged unhappily. "I wanted to stand up for her but there were a lot of them and they were a lot bigger than me. The candidates to came along to carry on once my shift was done joined in. They said if she'd tried to choose them, they would have turned her away to go between... So I guess today was pretty normal," he shrugged again and shot Jasrai a weak smile, "you know how it is."

He wondered if she knew him well enough yet to know that while he seemed to be backing off helplessly, internally he was plotting. Someday, somehow, he was going to make all of those smug felines suffer; really, seriously, horribly suffer. Nobody got away with speaking like that about Kannaroth. If she had gone to them, they'd have sent her between eh? Well, that might actually have been alright for her; the day his lifemate opted for such a fool it would be blazing hot between and full of sunny ledges to laze on and fat herd beasts to feast on. He wished he could have said that to them, or that he could say it to Jasrai now. Still, at least Kannaroth knew, and she would help him think of a way to get back at them all.

Jasrai was momentarily thrown as Y'kar resumed his charade. Sometimes she wondered why he bothered with it, now that he'd Impressed Kannaroth, but most of the time she could understand the convenience of having a facade to hide behind when dealing with others. Mostly she just made herself seem more unremarkable than usual when she wanted to hide. Not that it was an experience she had frequently. Much of the time the challenge, for her, was attracting attention.

I am attention-getting, Roseth pointed out.

Yes. But before I had you, I had a knack for being invisible.

"I'm sorry to hear how you suffer," Jasrai said. She was more irritated than sorry, but in a public place she couldn't really air her grievances. She had Impressed, and she should be grateful - she was grateful - but her gratitude was supposed to extend to putting up with everything everyone else dealt out uncomplainingly.

"But obviously she didn't want anything to do with them. I can honestly see why, too. Kannaroth doesn't seem the sort to be impressed by people who lack the subtlety of a half-starved wher." Her tone was dismissive, the closest she would get to criticism in public. She was grateful that there was no new clutch on the sands, bringing the imposing threat of more people in the weyrling barracks. It would make commiseration far more difficult if they had to contend with other clutches' people as well.

"It occurs to me that we are not very well socialized," she remarked with a mischievous grin. "We should do something about that. Shall we sit with someone new this evening at dinner?"

Y'kar's mid brown eyes flickered from meek and open to chilly and amused for just a moment. "That sounds like fun," he replied with a smile, "it'd be nice to get to know more people. I'm sure once they do know us they'll be nicer, all most people see is that our dragons came from a tiny clutch and caused havoc... Once they know us, some people might be nicer." Some, but not many. Nevertheless, it was worth trying, and if tehy made no friends then perhaps they could anatgonize an idiot or two. Either way was fine by him, though of course he would be horrified when Kannaroth tried to steal from or verbally shred other diners.

"Maybe," Y'kar suggested tentativly with a slight smile to Jasrai, "our day is about to get better."

Jasrai couldn't tell if Y'kar was being serious or not. She could think of a number of things more fun than trying to meet new people. It wasn't something she was good at anyway, and the general antagonism the Weyr seemed to feel toward her and the others who had Impressed with her just made it that much less fun. Now that she'd made the suggestion, however, she couldn't exactly take it back. Not unless Y'kar decided to change his mind. Shardit.

You don't want to meet people? Roseth asked. Why not? Then more people could learn how wonderful I am, and how clever Kannaroth is. Not enough people know that, you know.

I'm not good at meeting. And they're probably all jealous that I have you, which will make it difficult for me to make a good impression on them, Jasrai replied, which reminded her of something else that she couldn't say to Y'kar or anyone because Roseth would hear and have her feelings hurt. There was a certain paradox in the Weyr's attitude toward this clutch. The dragons were inferior, but their riders didn't deserve them.

"Oh, no doubt," Jasrai agreed.

Roseth turned to Kannaroth and said, Jasrai doesn't mean what she's saying. Does Y'kar?

"And as for our day getting better, how could it not?" she added with an almost believable peal of laughter.

Did he? She gave her rider a nudge, having not really been paying attention to his thoughts; she'd been thinking about her belly. "Sort of," she replied eventually, "he thinks it could be fun to show up some idiots... but it is an effort, he would be just as happy to keep to ourselves. Frankly all I want is food, I do not have the patience to suffer fools tonight." She'd verbally shred if necessary, but it wasn't something she especially felt like for once. Food. That was all she wanted. Food, lots of it, and soon.

Having thought about it, and responded to his lifemate's nudge, Y'kar turned to Jasrai, wondering if he had been asked because she had asked Roseth to check. "Or we could keep to ourselves and mock from a distance," he suggested in an undertone, "secretly of course." He didn't expect Jasrai to understand his pretenses, but he trusted her to let him keep them nevertheless.

Roseth considered Kannaroth's answer. She could certainly agree with that last bit about lacking the patience for fools. She didn't feel like dealing with them, either. It was exhausting, trying to remember not to give offense simply by showing them up in every possible way. Jasrai frequently had to remind her not to show off too much. She resented being forced to stifle her genius for moronic laypeople, but she understood, she thought. These people could make their lives unpleasant if they got too jealous.

I just want food, too. I think we should not sit with new people. I don't want to meet them. They'll be stupid and boring. Roseth spoke so that her rider, her sister, and Y'kar could hear her. She rather liked this new speaking-to-clutchmates'-humans thing. It made life so much simpler. And she'd thought of it before Kannaroth.

"Um. That's up to you. I think we've heard Roseth's opinion."

Most of the time Jasrai loved having Roseth as a bondmate, but there were times when she wished for more privacy. This was one of those instances. She wasn't sure what Roseth had said to prompt Y'kar's offer of an alternative dinner plan, but she guessed it had been taken from something she'd thought. She wasn't sure how she felt about Roseth's new idea of speaking to other people, either. It was something she'd have to discuss with the dragonet in the near future.

"Personally, I just want to feed Roseth and go to bed. I'm ready for this day to be over," she said truthfully. She sounded weary.

Y'kar blinked as he heard Roseth's voice once more; he suspected the feeling would take a while to get used to. "Umm... I'm happy to just eat by ourselves," he siad with a smile to Jasrai. "It has been a long day, the sonner we all eat the sooner we can go to bed, right?" Go to bed, so that they could get up and trudge through another day. He was getting tired of the routine, more interesting lessons - flying lessons - couldn't come soon enough.

"That," Jasrai agreed, "would be wonderful."

Roseth sighed pointedly, her sides actually heaving with the force of her expelled breath. Would the humans talk forever? She circled the pair impatiently and walked toward the dining cavern, repeating the process several times until Jasrai finally took the hint and headed in the desired direction. Her mission accomplished, Roseth settled her wings on her shoulders in something that almost resembled a shrug and looked behind her at Kannaroth.

Humans, was all she said, but she fit enough affection and exasperation into that one word that there could be no doubt what she meant. Weren't they a trial, but rather nice to have around at other times?

It wouldn't be the first time Jasrai had eaten alone or almost alone in the dining cavern. Having someone who wasn't Roseth for company would be a treat, but in reality she was weary and lacked the energy to be an engaging dinner companion. She hoped Y'kar wouldn't mind that she would spend most of the meal silent. Already she was making plans for bed and sleep. A bath would have to wait until the morning.
