The way she explained things...it did indeed sound less scary than he thought death to be. He nodded as things turned in his head. "Getting lost would indeed be scary. It's scary enough when one's alive...it must be terrifying when you're dead." He felt a bit of respect for the 'sacrifices' of her pride. Perhaps the sort of bravery he thought of wasn't so rare after all. "It's wonderful, what your home's sacrifices do. To face not only death but a possibility of something evil waiting on the other side...They are brave souls." His ears went down.
"Perhaps...she was not entirely unwilling? Just simply felt she was not ready yet? Such a responsibility...I could see how one would not want to 'leave' until they felt they could do their best for the sake of the ones they loved."

"Perhaps," Skuld agreed, but she didn't look totally convinced. The bone-visions had been very vivid, but they had only showed her bits and pieces of the life of that lioness. The girl talking to a lion Skuld had never seen before, talking about leaving the pride for something better. Where you will not have to be slaughtered, that's what the other lion had said. He had said other things too, and if they were true and not just boastingly said to win the poor Sacrifice over they were all in trouble back home. She had met unhappy ones now and then, those that one way or another didn't fit in. They usually left the pride, never to be heard of again, but her visions had hinted that some of the unhappy might now try to attack her pride. Well, the pride knew about the so called Dhati, but a head on attack from them sounded like crazy talk. it was a good thing Haini was in their midst an could report back if things started to turn ugly.
"You are very understanding," she said to the hyena, "Many misunderstand our customs and accuse us of killing these brave souls. But only the willing should be allowed to pass. Some... Some would fight us for it."
She caressed the bone with her paw, wishing it would show her some good news for a change, or at least something more useful than the bits of pieces of the young Sacrifice's life and death.

Dubu chuckled. "In truth, I'm a curious hyena. I like finding out about new things, new customs, new places. Plus...you seem nice. If such things were truly bad, they couldn't turn out someone nice." In all truth...the way she explained it, it didn't seem bad. Not unless the soul was truly unwilling. "Maybe, when you get home, you can help to make sure only the truly willing have such a fate?"

"Curiosity is a gift," she said and smiled, "Not everyone understands that. There are many things to discover if you keep your eyes and ears open, and far from everyone do!"
She had met many on her travels that were blind and deaf to the world even if their eyes and ears worked just fine. They just lacked a desire to see. And sometimes... sometimes you expect to see the world work in a certain way, only to miss every sign that contradicts your own expectations. Skuld knew she had made that mistake often enough.
"I did not keep my eyes open," she admitted, "Because I didn't want to believe that our enemies could be strong enough to hurt us. And look where that took me? If I make it home I think I shall take your advice, and if not I'll have to try to help from the spirit realm."
