"I did see her," objected Astor. "I saw her a few days before I got here, it's just-"
He rubbed his eyes sleepily. It was too late at night. He was having trouble remembering what it was Airi had said to him. It wasn't that he hadn't been paying attention, just that right now he was preoccupied. It really was on the tip of his tongue.
"I can't remember right now," he grumbled in frustration.
"I can promise you that this is not your first life..."
At that, Astor's eyes slowly went wide as a look of comprehension crossed his face. "There's a voice," he confided. "It calls me Hunahpu."
He hoped sincerely that he hadn't jinxed it. The voice had been quiet for the last two weeks, and he did not want it to come back now of all the inconvenient times it could choose to butt in.

"Hunahpu..." Riven sounded the word out carefully, getting it a bit wrong in the end, but it was a good attempt. "Perhaps that was your name, in the past. Or the name of someone close to you. It seems more complicated for some Fa'e than others. Me... I was - am - me. Not much difference, really."
There was a very, very faint trace of - bitterness? frustration? in Riven's tone. "And my job was to prevent this from happening." He gestured at the structure, the movement sharp and obviously angry. "And I haven't been neglecting things... I don't understand why..."
His voice trailed off, and he made himself smile at Astor. "I'm sorry... if you want to look for your friends, you can. But I have to stay here, and try and fix this."
But I have no idea how. Other than throwing spirits at it until the construct faded or he had no more energy to use...

"Oh," nodded Astor, who had spent enough time running around in restricted areas on ships to know when he was getting in the way. "Okay." He took a few steps back, glancing over his shoulder to make sure he didn't step in a pumpkin or get too close to the crows. He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked over the darkened grounds.
"I- I guess I'll go look for Zaoll," he said, although if he didn't find her then he didn't know what he'd do. If he did find her, though - if he found her then everything would be okay.
It occurred to him that going home at some point before Chess woke up would be a good idea, but that was hours away.
"I," he fumbled, trailing off awkwardly. "Good luck?"
He was not sure what you were supposed to say to someone under these circumstances.

"Thank you," Riven said, and his smile this time was a little less forced. "I hope we can talk again later on... when there aren't such serious things to deal with. Good luck to you, too. I hope you find everyone you're looking for."

"Okay," nodded Astor, and swallowed the lump in his throat. "I hope I find them, too," he said. He waved weakly to Riven and turned. He wasn't sure which direction to go - either one would take him around the building - and wound up going left just because there were fewer crows that way.
