Sige dove after the gems, only to whine when they tumbled away. He frowned at the barrier, reaching out to flick it with the back of his hand warily, but only a little bit afraid. Hadn't he just said he was strong? Shouldn't he prove it? But something stopped him from grabbing at the gems, and he was stuck, mid move, as if someone held on to him by the seat of his pants. Finally, he jolted out of the moment with the command.
His memory? Kafka had tried to do that once, but Sige didn't see what talking about rocks and hunting and stuff had to do with all this. Maybe the voice WAS Kafka, in disguise. But Kafka smelt different. This...he'd never smelt this smell before. It couldn't be Kafka. He frowned at the question before puffing up his chest with pride.
"M'King! Sigeric is KING!"

Coolly, "No." There were going to be no delusions here, nothing that this child could mistake. This posturing could continue if it must, but underneath it, there would be the knowledge of the truth - and the hate that must accompany it. "Sigeric was king. Before. This flesh that holds you now is weak, child. You were greater once - or you certainly couldn't have been more feeble. Now you are Fa'e, because that is what Airi made you. You are weak, and you can only dream of the day you will have such power again."

"Was king? Before?" Sigeric frowned, puzzled. Did he mean back when he was in the forest? And now, here, he was weak? That wasn't true. Certainly, he was as strong as any time he was in the forest. And maybe he wasn't king here yet, but he would be! When he showed his power! In fact, here he felt renewed. This dark was comforting--no obnoxious light to weaken him. He contemplated over what his companion was talking about, but it seemed to be largely beyond him. He rubbed his head irritatedly. Words, words, words. He didn't like all that this voice was saying. How did he know how strong Sige was or wasn't?
"No!" He roared and charged the area where the voice came from, heedless of the uneasy foreboding he felt about his companion's power.

Words were over-complicating things for the poor boy. Laughter, then, would communicate everything that needed to be said as the boy charged headlong into the darkness. "You are weak now, assuredly. Because you are weak to me, and you are weak to yourself. One day, you will have such strength that the trinkets I offer you now will be garbage. But for now...."
The child's rush found him at last. Chaos. He stood like a simple man, illuminated barely in the light of the power gems. There was something about his eyes, though, something twisting and always changing, lightening and darkening, that belied a different nature.
He was completely unconcerned by the Fa'e's approach, and only gave a small, nearly imperceptible flick of one finger. The gems which Sige already held grew brightly then, surged suddenly with power - and as they were in his hands already, this power was transferred to him. In full.
It was consuming, it was agony, it was terrible - and it was glorious. As though a blind man suddenly gaining vision after a lifetime of darkness, his brain unable to comprehend the signals it was receiving, but knowing that somehow, some way, that was it, the thing always lusted for, but unreachable for so long...! Until... it was....
Gone....
"And are you still so strong, little king?" Chaos murmured, smiling.

Sige's body arched back and then collapsed in on itself, much like when he'd been kicked in the groin for the first time. He gasped, unable to find the air to scream as the power filled and fulfilled him. It was like being consumed from the inside out, hollowed and then refilled with something greater than himself. Whereas his world had been once just the forest and the marsh within, he now, suddenly, understood the idea of a beyond. Not just a beyond as in a different land, but something beyond himself. A power greater than himself. And this was it. Intrinsically, he understood that this power was not HIS power. Not the power that he had grown up with. He hadn't suddenly become stronger, but strength had been forced upon him, as if someone had wrenched him in two and stuffed the new energy inside him.
But still, when it was taken away, he howled in frustration, slamming his fists on the floor. Suddenly, for the first time in his life, he felt truly emptied, and hollow. What he had perceived as being top of the world was nothing in comparison to what was now out of his reach.

"And so we come to an understanding at last."
Chaos knelt by Sigeric now, unafraid of his flailing. If a blow landed on him, it didn't much matter. The child could try to assert himself all he needed - it didn't matter anymore. The source of the true power was established.
"I will tell you what to do. You will have power. And with the power that I give you, you will be strong." The short, curt sentences left a foul taste in his mouth - but eloquence could be sacrificed at the appropriate time, if it served the greater need. Chaos offered out a hand, opened it - more of the gems, or perhaps the same gems that had fallen before, were deposited there. "Is that what you want, Sigeric?"

Sige looked up at Chaos with a mixture of greed and loathing. This man had the power that was rightfully his as king, and he couldn't take it. This man had revealed to him that he wasn't strong enough. Sige hated to be told that he couldn't do something, especially when it involved power. He was used to being able to muscle his way through any situation...but he'd just come up against his first iron wall. The boy who had once only known the soft barrier of wood was suddenly faced with an obstacle that he'd never seen before.
He lowered his head to press it on the floor. It felt horrible, asking for something he was unable to get for himself.
"Yes."

The crystals fell. There was no need for rubbing the matter in - what was true had been made true, and anything else would be a waste of time and effort. "Use their power, and they will meld with you. Take your time, become accustomed to them. I will provide you with playmates while you learn," Chaos told the child. "There will be a time very soon when I will have use for you, when you will have a chance to meet with those who would belittle you and steal your power. And when you succeed against them, I will give you more."
This seemed to sum up Chaos's deal. He rose again, preparing to leave Sigeric in the darkness. But as he turned away, he couldn't resist that urge to get a final shot over his shoulder --
"Do well, Sigeric. Perhaps you'll be a king yet."
Chaos melded back into the darkness of his realm then, leaving Sigeric to his own.
