You could also donate old electronics too, or take faulty stuff and hack it up to make fun things like jewelry http://www.instructables.com/id/Motherboard-PCB-Bracelet/
But something useful to do also, because kids need them for school so much now, especially if you have extra flash drives, to donate them, but to fancy them up in a fun way would be awesome too http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-USB-thumb-drive-gift-more-memorable/

Those are great ideas!
And if any of us are thinking about doing for others for the holidays (or any other reason), it's time to get started!
There was a huge apartment fire here a couple of weeks ago, and 40 families of all ages lost everything. EVERYTHING. As someone who went through the same thing years ago, I can tell you that the kindness of strangers gives you the courage to pick up and go forward. The public outpouring of absolutely everything has been wonderful to see. It's good to remember that someone needs our help EVERY DAY. Look around you and see what you use or enjoy every day----those are the things to give, through whatever neighborhood organizations are available.
