Growing increasingly conscious of the fact that she was the only human in the water, Jasrai took a moment to pull herself out of the pool. Immediately she reached for the length of cloth she used to towel herself mostly dry and draped it over her shoulders and under her hair, crossing the ends over her chest in a nod to modesty. She was aware that clothing tended to cling when wet, and she didn't really think anyone needed to get that particular eyeful. Clinging to her breasts was fine. Clinging to her round, soft stomach was not.

"I think if I decided to practice my grandfather's craft I'd be in trouble. I'm not really cut out for it." Let him think she meant that being out of shape would hinder her as a miner. In reality, she just didn't think she'd ever have made a very good thief. She wasn't like her grandfather, who couldn't help himself and so had learned to turn a profit from his compulsions.

"I'm still not sure I'd want siblings. They sound like a lot of work." And Jasrai didn't really like work if she could avoid it. "Besides, didn't you ever wonder who your parents liked best? I mean, it's human nature to have favorites. What if you're not the favorite?"

She didn't realize until belatedly that what she'd said could be construed as a rejection of his offer of family. She had a family, a real one, and wasn't really in the market for more. Oh, a husband someday, maybe, but she doubted that would happen for her. Particularly not now that she'd Impressed a green. The reputation that went with that would pretty much ensure no one ever wanted to actually marry her. She wasn't sure how she felt about that.. It was another thing on the increasingly long list of Things Not to Think About.

Roseth paddled furiously toward the edge of the pool where her human had gotten out and planted her foreclaws on the edge. If Jasrai wasn't going to stay in the water, neither was she. It was a bit of an awkward scramble to get out, and she probably sprayed everyone with her wings as she fanned them for balance. Nevertheless, she ended up on terra firma once more.

Yes, she said smugly. We will be the best. I will settle for nothing less.

A'li nods, looking out over the water to give her a bit of privacy until the cloth was in place. He didn't want to give a bad impression after all. Even though he'd spent all his life, well until coming to the Weyr, around women and girls, that didn't mean he had any right to look at someone when they don't want to be looked at. He'd chased off a number of boys for staring at his sisters when they were clothed enough to learn that staring was not a welcome thing.

"Well then you're a lot smarter than half the people here I'd say." If not more. And of course he really means all those in their higher positions who did nothing to earn them but impress to a ranking dragon. They were no better than any of them, and a strong surge of agreement from Nellath seals that.

"Siblings aren't work unless you take the roe of keeper among them. I enjoyed my younger sisters more than my older sisters. I only had work to do dealing with them when some hold boy came around, to chase them off. They might not have liked it but I saw the way those boys would look at them. They were no good, not a one of the lot." By the time he reaches the end of his little rant, his voice had turned a bit sour, letting how much he really disliked them very clear to be heard.

It takes a moment before he really thinks on the favorite idea. "I know I wasn't the favorite. My mother loved my sisters too much to favor me, and I'm not anything my father would have been proud of. But just keeping my sisters in line and safe was good enough." A frown slips in though as he thinks a bit more on that. Was she turning down the idea of being viewed as a sister?

Nellath contents herself to remain in the water, though she moves closer to the lot of them. A wave of amusement is tossed at A'li when he is made wet despite his efforts. Attention is focused again on Roseth and she nods her head in a slow sweep. Of course we will be the best. They won't be able to do a thing to stop us from proving it. Kannaroth and Hers have planned meeting outside of regular lessons to work on it out of their sight. Of course if anyone did happen to look for them and catch them in their own little wing practices, not a thing could be done about it because it was just harmless practicing. Harmless indeed.

Jasrai's mouth twitched into a half-smile. If anyone asked her opinion, and she was inclined to get in a lot of trouble, she would have said that she was smarter than more than half of the people at Telgar. For one thing, she didn't limit herself through pettiness as they did. Perhaps if she'd been Searched by High Reaches instead, things might have been different. They were supposed to be more accepting. Of female greenriders and intelligent females in general.

But then you wouldn't have had me, and I'm worth it, Roseth pointed out.

True, Jasrai conceded, patting her dragon on the shoulder.

"Thanks," she said to A'li. "Nice to know someone's in my corner. Though I suppose you're in it for much the same reason I am."

She shrugged, thinking about A'li and his sisters. She never wanted a sister. When she lived in the hold, she'd had Morlie who was a good friend, but they hadn't spoken in over a turn. Not even through letters. That was a friend she'd lost completely, and she sometimes missed her. Missed having a female to talk things over with. Morlie, before she decided that she hated Jasrai, would have offered to seduce anyone who was unkind and then leave them with their hearts bleeding. Jasrai wished she could do that. Morlie wouldn't have liked to have someone like A'li as a brother. Too much supervision.

"I can understand why they wouldn't be appreciative of you chasing the boys away," she said. "We girls do like to have a young man or two hanging about. They're good for our egos. Even if they aren't good for much else."

Not that she really knew from personal experience, but she was good at observation, and she'd observed that much. And who knows? Maybe someday she'd meet someone who liked fat women and didn't mind that she had a dragon. Not likely at this Weyr.
