Aoibheann sighed as they stepped into the cave and curled up in a corner after thoroughly shaking the water from her coat, mane, tail, wings, crest, and scales. "Misfortune does not last forever, and I seriously doubt the Goddess could ever have anyone lead a life so unhappy as yours has been sometimes without finding a way to bring a little joy into it somewhere. I'm sure you'll find that happiness sooner or later, you just have to have faith and courage and patience," she said softly. "The Goddess moves in mysterious ways, and not even her Chosen may know how or why she does anything, Sir Draven. You do not need to heed my words or respond, though I have fragile hopes that you can find that happiness I am sure you are meant to find now that you are free."
PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 11:48 am

He didn't even bother to shake any of the water from himself as he just dropped to the ground, wings remained folded to his sides. Draven snorted as the mare kept on about how happiness would find him sooner or later, he very highly doubted that. Shaking only his head, he sprayed some water on the cumbersome rocks that he laid a little too close to. The metal spikes from his armored face brushed up against them. Within the dimness of the cave, the small sparks that came from the metal against rock reaction lit him up just a little and for only an instant. "I don't see myself becoming 'happy' in the same terms as you think you know. I'm only 'happy' knowing I can keep you all away from me and AWAY from what follows." Draven grumbled lowing his head to the slippery cave floor, his wings fanning themselves out a little to almost encompass his whole being.

He didn't want to hear much more of this goddess whom seemed to have gone and neglected him for so long. What was he to her? Just another grease spot on her 'perfect' world. With a human raised whore of a mother and a wild souled father who knew no better anyways. Lifting his head from the ground, he scratched the metal spikes across the stones again, making the most teeth chattering noise possible until slowly the metal plate seemed to slip from his face and to the ground with a bit of a clatter. Cool, damp air rushed over his already cold face before he tucked it under a wing to warm. The plate itself laid between himself and the wall he was near. That was better, at least it wouldn't freeze to his face, not that it wouldn't have been a bad idea really.

"If I were meant for freedom, they why am I always haunted? Hunted? You think freedom can come so easily, well wake up. Unless you know TRUE hardships like I had you know nothing! Now just shut up and leave me alone. I'm only in this stupid cave, cause you insisted upon it." Bitterly he closed his eyes, his horn stubbed face still hidden underneath still wet wing. Tail flicking, landing with a wet splatter on the rocky floor, he tried ignoring the mare, for once.

Aoibheann was falling asleep as he spoke, so she didn't pay a lot of attention to his words, which made her feel both guilty and relieved. What she did say as she drifted off was, "I simply do not like to see anyone suffering. No true mother can ever let anyone suffer without seeing in that suffering soul her own child crying out to her and feel the pain of seeing her child in pain. I just wish to protect all I meet from sadness, even if it is at the cost of my life and my own happiness." And with that, she fell asleep to the pattering of rain outside the cave and the quiet breathing of the aririn stallion across the cave and the warmth she shifted around to achieve.

Ears still poking up between his forward folding wings, Draven listened as the mare slowly fell asleep to the pitter patter of the rain. It did kind of had a way of making him drowsy. His eyes had long been closed after he shed the metal armored plate. Rolling a little, a leg kicked out from under his larger wing and against the wall. He barely flinched as it pulled back, damn, he hated with the cold cramped him up. It seemed that no amount of warmth could keep it from happening. An ear flicked in the direction of the mare as she shifted around, probably trying to get more warmth from her wings.

Draven lifted his head up a little, just barely letting his eyes crest the edges of his smaller forwards wing. From the dim of the light that came from the outside, he could see her silhouette. With a soft huff, he stuck his head back beneath his wings and closed them a little more to hide his hornless face for whenever the sun did come back again. A foreleg shifted a little pulling the face plate closer to his body to keep the metal warm, he dozed. Never completely falling asleep as the air in the cave seemed to drop even more and the coldness of the cloth on his back was making things more miserable.

Groaning, he stood back up, he couldn't get to a proper sleep with how cold it was getting. Leaving the plate on the ground, he paced back and forth at the back of the cave, not caring if his steps were a little loud. Perhaps the movements would warm and dry the tapestry enough so he could at least take a little bit of a nap.

At some point, Aoibheann woke up briefly to see Draven pacing. The rain had the look, sound, and feel of a serious late autumn-early winter storm, which meant it might last well into tomorrow. Drat. It was cold, but she'd found some pine boughs when she'd laid down, and the needles were much warmer and softer than when she'd fallen asleep. She sighed. Draven looked cold and unhappy, too, and some touch of motherly instinct led her to say muzzily before she drifted off again, "If you're cold and can't get warm, you can lie down next to me." From the silhouette of his face, she could discern no horn, which didn't really surprise her. Occasionally, even wild kirin were born without horns. "I don't really mind you not having a horn, if you're worried about that; I've seen at least one or two kirin who didn't have horns before I met you." And with that, she fell asleep again, having shifted a bit on the pine bedding to make room for him if he so wished.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 18, 2009 3:00 pm

His ears laid themselves back as he turned his head towards her as she had apparently just woke to tell him that she had met hornless Kirin before. He was not a TRUE hornless, but no one could see that. Head lowering, he stomped over towards the mare and was tempted to grasp a hold of hers and just pull. But he thought better of it and just snorted at her, when his face was close to her. "What do you know of hornless. I was not BORN hornless. The heathens CUT and BURNT my horn so I couldn't GROW BACK! You got that!" he roared not caring how close to her ears his mouth was. "TRUE hornless might have their pride, but I have NOTHING because of those...." He trailed of as he stomped heavily back over to the face plate and rolled it over so that he could slam it back into place.

Once that was done, he was done with that he stomped past her and back outside. He was going to find some where's else to rest. Wings shuffling themselves, he let the smaller, weaker wings lay atop the tapestry as the larger set fanned themselves out. He wasn't sure where he was going to go, but it certainly would have been better then that cave. With a couple beats of his wings, Draven headed into the pouring rain. Rain that pelted at him like frozen spears before he could land again in the midst of a small clump of thick evergreens. It might have not been that 'far' from the cave, but it was enough and it was dry here as well. A good place where he could rest.

Pulling the cloth from his back, he difficultly laid it over two of the smaller trees and gave himself a good shake. Long thick locks fuzzed out a little as he did, water was released from his soggy coat as the many scars. Ones a fleshy pink color from good healing and those a crimson red from ill heath showed up against his pale coat. Wings folded back against his body, he paws at the needle covered ground before he laid himself back down to rest. Hopefully she didn't follow him, as if he needed MORE humiliation.

Aoibheann had been shocked awake by Draven yelling that his horn had been forcibly removed, and before she could apologize and express her sorrow for him, he flew away like a colt having a tantrum. She was torn between letting such an irritating colt go out into a storm that showed signs of getting nastier before nightfall and going after him to try to make amends and in case he got in trouble. Aoibheann was a mother through and through, however, and flew after him as the clouds deepened suspiciously like an electric storm on its way with a vengeful fury. She couldn't leave anyone alone out in a storm like this when he could be hurt, and it did not occur to her to fear for her own safety. Not for one minute.

"Draven, wait! I'm sorry, I didn't realize they'd taken so much from you! Please, wait! It's not safe out here right now! Draven!" she screamed out as the rumbles of thunder approached and the first flashes of lightning stabbed the earth and air.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 18, 2009 4:17 pm

"OH WHAT NOW!" Draven grumbled loudly as his head turned looking towards where Aiobh's voice had come. So she 'had' followed him, just perfect. Eyes narrowing themselves he thought of just remaining quiet and still she wouldn't see him. Though his white coat was kind of a give away amongst the green of the trees around him. Then there was the thunder that was starting to rattle the heavens, could this day get any worse? Rolling himself over he looked to the cloth that was draped and dripping from the evergreen branches, he wasn't wanting to put that back on. He was already starting to get a little warmer without the freezing fabric covering him, but without it... He was 'exposed'!

"Oh hell with it." Grudgingly Draven slithered his way under the cloth, shivering as it touched his skin and pulled it more or less into place. Folding his smaller wings under the cloth, his larger set laid atop, it was some comfort it wouldn't completely touch him at least. Turning his face skywards again, he took a breath. "Down here you fool!" He shouted to Aiobh, to get her out of the wind. Sure Draven had himself holed up inside, but he wasn't 'that' cruel to let someone else get themselves killed because of him. Heck, that would just make him dig a deeper hole that no one could drag him out of. "Get down here, before I'm taking your feathers back to your so called family and telling them that you were stupid enough to fly in a lightening storm!" Well if that were to happen, they he might get killed by them. Hell, that might have been a better fate then anything else, but still. Again, he wasn't that cruel.

Aoibheann spotted him and angled downward, backwinging as she crashed through the narrow aperture in the canopy to where Draven was. "I'm sorry, Draven, I really didn't know what they'd taken and how cruel they could possibly be. If I'd known, I wouldn't have said what I said." Aoibheann still wanted to believe in the Goddess, that she had plans for Draven, but she kept these thoughts to herself, as well as the unease she was beginning to feel about the relationship between the Goddess and the captured kirindae. Surely she wouldn't abandon them?

((Yay for Aoibh now having existential crisis that will become plot? xd ))

[[ oh dear. xD What has Draven done? ]]

Stepping backwards, the stallion pressed himself to the back of the 'enclosure' as the mare landed. Huffing to himself he looked around, head raised up some as if he were looking over high walls of some sort. True the trees were tall, but he was used to other thing to look over, finding nothing that he might have been looking for he looked back to the peahen mare. "I try and KEEP that away from the naive so that you don't suffer the same fates. For not even your own wings, hooves or horn are a match to them. They have ways of subduing the strongest of us." Shaking his head once more as he settled down some, this was going to be a long and restless night.

The tapestry against his sides and back was bitterly cold and it was making him shiver, no matter how much he tried adjusting it to not touch his bare skin. Slipping his other set of wings under it gave him a little bit of comfort and warmed his hide, still the night was going to get a lot colder. He could tell, deep down within his bones, he knew. A dark eye kept watch on the mare, making sure that she minded her own space as he would his own. Over head the thunder started rumbling louder, ears laying themselves back, his glance went more skyward, just peachy.

Aoibheann wanted to wrap her wings around him, just as she would one of her own sons in this instance, but Draven seemed so against it. Unsure of what to do, to comfort him or to respect his fears and desire to protect others from the suffering inflicted on him, she ended up standing alone across the clearing from him, fluffing her wings from time to time to keep warm and do a bit of preliminary drying of her wings.

How would one keep oneself safe from those horrible things that had hurt Draven and the other stallion, Black Beauty, though the latter didn't know it? If hooves didn't work and they seemed capable of removing horns, could anything keep the kirindae safe, short of the Goddess? Why would the Goddess let some of her own suffer like this when they were blameless?

Shaking her head, she refocused on Draven and noticed that he was shivering. Still uncertain about proper protocol, she asked, "Draven, do you want that thing taken off your back? It would probably make you less cold and wet. I know you don't want anyone to get too close, but I can't stand to see anyone suffering," she added, hoping he'd acquiesce to her request to help him dry off and warm up.

A rumble came from the stallion as he glanced back to the mare whom seemed bent on disturbing his inner peace with her annoyances. Pulling himself further under the cloth, his wings holding it down tightly. He would rather not be uncovered and would suffer with the cold as long as he could. A snort escaped him as he shoved his head under the cloth, it ruffled in the motion. "I would rather not." came Draven's rough voice as it seemed he was wanting to rest.

"And even if I did want you to remove it, what are you expecting to find? A seamless coat and glossy scales?" He asked not moving from where he laid, ears listening to both the thunder that rolled over head or the voice of the mare. "Because I can tell you this, you will find neither. You would be horrified and run as if someone had smacked you." Pulling his head from where it had been placed, a dark eye watched Aoibheann carefully, not wanting to miss something. Really not wanting to have her come any closer then she already was.

Aoibheann shrugged. "I did not offer to remove the cloth for aesthetic reasons, only because it seems to be preventing you from warming up and drying off. And I have seen deeply battle-scarred stallions before, and scars do not scare me." She snorted a little, irritated by his attempts to be over-careful with her. "I'm not a filly who does not know anything about the world, Sir Draven, I'm a mother of five and grandmother of two who is difficult to surprise and only gets truly scared when those around her, especially those dear to her heart, get in trouble."

She fluffed her tail feathers, still a little annoyed by his attitude. Who cared about scars in a place where almost all stallions with a good sized herd carried scars? Scars sometimes even made a stallion look dashing, and if Draven had earned these scars in battle, even if they were not battles of his choosing, he was someone who would earn respect amongst the kirindae, and for good reason.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 17, 2010 6:24 pm

"Such scars are for those with great pride, these aren't battle scars. Trust me, just get some sleep and hope that this bloody storm passes and I can be on my merry way." Draven huffed some as he tried once more to block out everything. But it seemed that he simply could not, this one was most insistent. With a heave, he pulled himself up. All four wings were stuffed under the tapestry.

"So you don't care of what the scars look like, fine then." was his statement as his wings extended themselves. The brand on his flank appearing first, soon the scars that littered his legs. Most were flesh colored, healed perfectly, others were a bloody color. Turning somewhat so that his back would be exposed, though from just his legs they showed ill treatment due to a dull coat and chipping scales. With a dip of his wings, the frozen cloth slipped from his body. All four wings flared themselves out to his sides, revealing his scared and almost mutilated back. Scars littered his back almost seeming like there was nothing else.

His scales were growing back, but they weren't as shiny as they possibly should have been. But scars, flesh and bloody colored alike marred his once lovely body. Draven's reminder of his breaking, ill tempered stable caretakers and even his own 'owner's' well placed whip. Some scars over lapped each other, most shallow, but the few that were deep would never be covered again. Ears leveling themselves to his skull, dark eyes glared from their sockets. "Tell me if your wild ones bear this many scars from simple battles over land and mares. Let them be broken by all means. Loss of their horns, wings if they have any. Tails and manes cropped short, leaving openings for the biting flies to feast. Heavy contraptions placed on their backs, to be ridden around and showed off like some big thing." Folds his wings back into their places, though small ones atop the larger this time. "Still trust your goddess? Because I see no goddess in these lands, just a place that the heathens of the outer worlds have yet to reach. No place is truly safe, not even here." His tone had softened as if he were worried that someone else might hear. Also he was getting tired of everything and just wanted to escape reality to somewhere no one could find him.

Aoibheann stared in horror at the wrongs done this stallion, and in her mind echoed the questions she didn't want to think about: did the Goddess really exist if there were creatures that could exact this kind of horrors upon her people? And if she really did exist, why did this sort of thing happen to her people? Was it preordained? Was it a message of sorts? Was she testing Draven? Was she even powerful enough to protect her people?

She shook her head, trying to drive the blasphemous questions from her mind. Surely, she existed and had a plan for Draven. Her mind skittered back to Black Beauty. He had not been nearly so scarred, but he had had no ability to speak...and no broken horn. So, in other words...this could be a message, a warning from the Goddess. She surely couldn't abandon so many of her people.

Her eyes focused on the horrible scars that she wished she could wash away, and with them, his horrible memories, like she could for her own children, with love, kindness, and protection. Draven wasn't someone she could protect, and no one had protected him.

In the end, all she said was, "I'm sorry," in a very soft voice trying to hold back tears of sympathy and sorrow that anyone had to go through that. What she didn't mean to be in her voice was her uncertainty about the Goddess, a solid faith that had been shaken with the arrival of Draven.
