P.S. Most of the minutia aren't that important. Getting the basics is better and prayer is uniform (I recommend Artscroll, though it can be expensive they are amazing and include all the prayer laws, in the back as well as easy to follow instructions about the prayers)
Again, there aren't nearly as many variations as you assume.
Oh, there are.
A joke: Two Jews are stranded on a desert island, just the two of them. When they are rescued, three synagogues are found. One Jew explains, "That's my Synagogue, That's His Synagogue, and that's the one that neither of us will go to."
There are by no means hundreds of groups and subsects, but there are hundreds of ways to do anything.
------
For example:
Q.) "How do you light Shabbat Candles?"
A1.) "Always light the left one first as the left side of the body, the heart. Do the blessing first."
A2.) "Always light the left one first as the left side of the body, the heart. Do the blessing after."
A3.) "Always light the right one first, as it is like Israel in the East. Do the Blessing first."
A4.)"Always light the right one first, as it is like Israel in the East. Do the Blessing first."
A5.)"Always light the right one for the East when East of Israel, otherwise the Left for East or both at the same time in Israel. Just do the blessing first."
A6.)"Always light the right one for the East when East of Israel, otherwise the Left for East or both at the same time in Israel. Just do the blessing first."
A7.)"It doesn't matter which candle you light first, just do the blessing first."
A8.) "It doesn't matter which candle you light first, just do the blessing after and only after."
A9.)"Which candle you light first and when the blessing is done doesn't matter."
Okay, I made up all of those besides A8, which I was under the impression was the one that is usuallly followed, but you get the point. We've got thousands of years of this back and forth, and I've got to find a rabbi.
It's funny. When I was talking about this with my Judaics teacher, he said that because I am Rabbi-less, I can ask a rabi a question and if I don't get a desirable answer, I can just ask another and another until I get a desirable answer. Which is not really good. xp
