He was battering her fingers desperately, trying every trick to claw them open -- levering his fingers underneath her own, tugging, never quite getting enough purchase. They were both gasping for breath now, panting unashamedly to get air into screaming lungs, dragged slowly over the rough macadam of the street. She was slowly starting to pull her hand away, and it was slippery with blood, and it worked --
-- and when Nerissa finally pushed the star seed down into the man's chest, nothing happened.
The businessman had already died: possibly from the shock, possibly because they took too long, possibly because his star seed had taken one hell of a beating in the vortex. She placed her forehead on the ground and kept her hand, knuckled with the star seed, on his chest; she was just breathing now, limp, defeated. "s**t," she muttered into the road.

An ugly snarl had pulled itself at the corners of his lips as she pushed the star seed straight back into the man's chest... and lingered there for a moment, hardly daring to believe it when nothing happened. After all of that.
He'd ******** won.
Slowly, gingerly, he rolled off of her to sprawl on his back on the debris-littered street, took in a breath that made his eyes water from the sheer pain before he started to laugh. It was weak, hitched occasionally whenever the sound grew a little too loud or vigorous and was forced to taper off again into something his battered body could handle. It was ******** worth it now, all of it, and though there was a near-prone senshi lying near him, he couldn't even try to lift himself up pretend he was going to even be able to try and snatch her starseed.
He was spent.

The senshi was, amazingly, pulling herself up to stand: as weak on her feet as a newborn kitten, starseed clutched between her fingers. She reached out and dropped it, a mite callously, on his face: it pinged off one cheek and slid to the ground next to his ear. He was laughing. He was actually laughing. He was laughing like a crazy person, albeit one who had to stop wheneve he laughed too hard to suck in a breath and wince in pain.
"s**t," Sailor Nerissa repeated again, and, gravelly: "I hope you choke on it."
Then she turned around and -- still in obvious agony, like every step was knives -- limped away into the darkness. She was still giving him the finger behind her back, jabbing it up, before she went back to holding her arm and gingerly trotting off up the street and into the shadows. And then she was gone.

The little jewel hit his cheek, a flinch unconsciously taking hold while he sought to twist his jaw up to better see it. "Thinkin'... of you... Thanks... for the help..." He practically purred at her retreating back between gasps of air, and after she'd long been gone did he finally think he could handle getting back up to his feet. His fingers didn't want to listen to him as he forced them to close again around the starseed before he did his best to get to his feet. The entire world swayed back and forth, casting the impression that he was about to be sick before he managed to get to his knees, and eventually, up on two legs again.
His mind felt sluggish now, unable to piece together where he should head first, and with an arm wrapped tightly around his middle as though to best keep his guts all in the same place, the lieutenant staggered off in the opposite direction.
He'd remember her, that little senshi; none the ones he'd encountered had been able to do something quite that powerful... For now though, he needed to go keel over somewhere before he passed out in the street.
