Did they Weyr really leave the choosing of their leaders up to the lust of a dragon? Her face probably asked the question, but she didn't. "If Hondonith does fly the Queen, do you think..." he would make changes? It was clear that the girl didn't know how to finish her own question. It was even more clear that she knew little about how the Weyrs worked. Sometimes Jada wondered what the person who had brought her back from Search saw in her that had brought her here.
She watched the Weyrsinger mark the hide, thoughtfully. And when he mentioned about making the music for a flute, she promptly pulled out hers and passed it to him. "I'm rot with a flute, sir. But if you want to give it a shot..." besides, whatever he had just scribbled down, she couldn't read. Well, maybe she could. But Weyrsinger M'dor had atrocious handwriting when he edited.
She leaned in towards the older man, watching him scribble, flute still extended. Was that supposed to be a...? She made a quiet, slightly strangled noise low in her throat.

M'dor shook his head. "I doubt it. He's had the position ever since Shaith Rose, and he hasn't done anything since then besides shuffle the wings around a bit to accommodate new riders. If he stays, this—" he made a sweeping gesture "—stays as well. As nice as it is, there's been nothing worth writing music about in a long time." The Weyrsinger almost looked like he was pouting. His smile returned, however, when an idea hit him. "Perhaps once the Queen Rises, I'll gather all the old Harper apprentices and we'll write something together. Would you be interested?"
His grin only widened when she offered him the flute, taking it with an almost reverence. "It's a nice flute, very well crafted. Who made it?" The greenrider turned the instrument over in his hands, quietly admiring it for a moment. Yes, it would work perfectly. It had been a while since he'd played a flute, but hopefully Jadamirei wouldn't mind too much.
Taking a deep breath, he played two warm up scales before starting on his newest piece. It seemed to flow a little better on the flute, which pleased M'dor greatly, and he stopped only a few times to scratch in more notes. Yes indeed! Much better! Once he was finished, he handed the instrument back to its owner.
"Thank you! I think it sounds much better on flute."

"I would!" Jada's entire position shifted when he asked if she would be interested in taking part in a joint composition. Eagerness almost dripped off her. "That would be lovely!" To have the opportunity to write again, to perform again? Even only to spend time in an area full of people who understood her love for the art would be... amazing.
"My father made it, actually." she settled back down, crossing her hands in her lap. "He's a Journeyman." She rested her chin on her hands, closing her eyes to listen to the music as M'dor played. He was better with a flute than she was, though looking at him he'd a bit more experience. He wasn't old, by any means, but he was older than she was. She hid a smile, pulling up her legs to her chest and watching him work.
Jada was more comfortable right now than she'd been since she came to the Weyr right after the old gold's last clutching. She blinked as the music stopped and he handed the flute back in her direction. "Oh, my pleasure." she took it back from him. "It sounds much cleaner on a flute, yes." She bit her lip., glancing back at the piece. "I think it sounds lovely. What do you think, pretty Ichoth? Have you been assuring Yours that all sounds well?"
A glance at the sky almost made her wince. It was getting late. Time had flown faster than she'd thought.

"Excellent! I'll make sure to find you once it's happened. If you know any Harper apprentices, you should invite them to come along. But only if they're nice," he teased, sounding almost as pleased as she was at the prospect. Queen flights were nothing to poke fun at, and it would be interesting to see how some of the new Weyrfolk would react to seeing a dragon Flight. Jadamirei was certainly in for an experience!
Ichoth seemed surprised when the form Harper apprentice asked her a question, not having expected to be included in the conversation. She, like Jadamirei, had been enjoying the music, especially now that it was on the flute. Sometimes she wished Hers liked to play the drums. They were her favourite instrument.
I… I think he plays very well. I think you do too. I wish I could hum as well as you do, the green replied, a little shyly, her head peeking out from underneath one wing. Her head disappeared again once she had said her bit as she crooned softly to herself. Talking was hard!
Still tracing the line of notes, M'dor looked up to find Jadamirei glancing up at the suns. "I suppose I'm probably keeping you from your afternoon chores, aren't I?" It was doubtful she would mind, but he knew whoever was expecting her would.

EH? The girl almost jumped out of her skin when she heard Ichoth's voice in her head, the sound completely wiping away all of the thoughts she'd been gathering up. It was the first time a dragon had spoken directly to her! How enthralling! That was rare, wasn't it? And... And... She looked at the green with veritable stars shining in her eyes. A dragon had spoken to her!
It was an impressive moment in the girl's life, and one she'd remember forever, whether she Impressed or not. "I'm sure you have a lovely sound, Ichoth." It was achingly clear that she wanted to continue asking the green questions but was afraid to press her luck.
It took her a few moments to realize the weyrsinger was speaking to her, and when she did she turned beet red and gave the Rider a wry smile. "I managed to barter for my morning chores," she admitted, "But I do need to be back soon to help the kitchens for the evening meal. Sir, may I... may I bother you and Ichoth for more conversation? In the future? It's nice... spending time with someone who I can talk to about music."

M'dor's eyes darted to his dragon, raising an eyebrow at her. What did you say? I think you scared her half to death.
I said good things. I did not mean to scare her! The green seemed quite upset at the thought and dared take another peek at Jadamirei. She didn't look like she was about to run away screaming, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to. It would have been so much easier if human eyes changed colour like the dragon ones. Then she would know!
Maybe she's just overwhelmed. That was brave of you to talk to her though, the Weyrsinger replied in an attempt to soothe his green. She seemed to settle at this, and he turned his attention back to the former Harper apprentice when she spoke. "Aaah, the evening meal. If you're helping I'm sure it'll taste fantastic." He grinned cheekily, tipping his head a little at her question. "Certainly! Whenever you have a spare moment. I'll always be around, probably teaching some of the Weyrbrats, but I'm sure they won't mind a break from their lessons. But I shan't keep you any longer. The cook won't be happy with a dragonrider stealing away candidates."

She bit her lip, looking abashed. "I'll be on my way immediately." she responded to his cheeky grin with one of her own. "If I'm in charge of the serving, I'll make sure you get the best we have." She pushed to her feet, eyed the basket for a moment. Then she set it down next to him. "Just so you don't get hungry before evening meal. And... if I can help you with anything else musical in the future, just let me know. Hope to see you again soon."
Turning, the girl gave Ichoth a little bow. "Thank you for speaking to me. It meant... a lot to me. I'd like it if you might consider doing so again sometime."
Giving another little glance at the sky and a wave to both the rider and his dragon, she turned, starting to dart off for the kitchens. "Goodbye!"
