A small, selfish part of Esta was pleased to see the other mare flustered and apologizing. Resolutely, the white mare squashed it. Grace didn't deserve that. Settled on snorting as an outward response.
"Just...don't do it again," she told the other, looking away again. She felt bad. It wasn't Grace's fault that she was pushing all the wrong buttons today...she ought to try and make up for her poor attitude.
"You know," she said slowly, "there is one thing I truly love about winter." She turned a smile on Grace, almost dazzling compared to her earlier gloom. "The snow, when the light hits it just right. It looks like scales - like the whole world is covered in scales."
Lots of deadly things were covered in scales. And most of them were beautiful besides. She just had to think of those that were light in color, and avoid the dark.

"I won't." Grace promised with a quick nod, relieved that Esta seemed to have forgiven her. At the mention of scales, the cranberry Usdia paused; earlier, when she mentioned the scales, Esta seemed upset about something... She should be careful not to say the same thing again, just in case.
"I've never really looked at it that way," She admitted with a sheepish smile; she thought that winter was pretty, but more because the land was covered in a blanket of white... It made everything look elegant in a way. "Maybe I'll keep a lookout when winter comes!"

Esta was fully aware of her pessimistic outlook on life, but talking to Grace was making her realize that she couldn't let that ruin her favorite time of the year. In fact, this winter would mean she had been in these lands a year...had known Tregaran almost a year. A smile touched her lips. Thinking about Tregaran always made her happy and calmed her down.
A larger grin crossed her face as she returned her attention back to Grace. "It's my favorite time of year, and I should thank you for helping me to remember that." And it was always good to remember silly little things, such as Tregaran tripping over her the first time they met.

"Really?" Grace blinked, obviously surprised; from their previous conversation, she would never have guessed that winter was Esta's favorite season. However, her expression soon changed and she beamed at the other, "You're very welcome! I like winter too... I was born in winter although I can't really remember much about those times..." Her voice faded away, but quickly picked up again, "Despite its beauty though, food will be scarce until its spring again... That's always troublesome."

Another lover of winter? And she was born in winter? How very interesting indeed. Esta was starting to actually have hope for this encounter...when Grace started talking about how difficult it was to find food in the winter, the white mare couldn't help but feel her spirits falling again.
"It's true...and those who cannot find nourishment will either do more than they thought they could or perish." She was silent then, her last word ringing with an almost fatal finality.
Grace had a real...talent...with her choice of discussion topics.

"Well, that's why I normally just go with tree bark," Grace replied quickly, as if sensing Esta's emotions, "Its bitter and dry, but it beats having an empty stomach! Besides, winter feels rather short... Once its over, Spring will bring lots of good food! That's always something I look forward to!"

Esta looked over at the other mare again. She was so...optimistic. And refused to let the white mare's pessimism ruin that. Esta was impressed despite herself.
"True enough..." she agreed slowly, "the spring does bring about a floursing and rebirth that almost makes up for the sorrow and darkness of winter."

"Yes, yes it does," Grace nodded with a smile, "Spring is somewhat like the opposite of winter! Besides, its arrival is always something to look forward to during winter! Personally, I think it helps me get through the cold season without feeling too down."
{I think we should end this soon. O: And sorry for the slow reply!}

Esta smiled awkwardly at the cranberry mare, the exercise of facial muscles she wasn't accustomed to using except around Tregaran. "Somehow," she told Grace, "I doubt that anything can keep you feeling down for too long."
The optimism was catching. The white mare could almost feel her heart lifting thanks to this encounter.

"Really?" Grace answered almost immediately, but quickly realized how silly she must sound. Giving a grin to hide her embarrassment, she felt relieved that her naturally dark pelt would cover up her blush. Soon enough, however, she found herself smiling more naturally in response to Esta's comment, "Well, I really hope so! And I wish the same for you!"
As she looked at the pale colored female again, Grace realized that Esta does look a lot more alive when she smiles; in her opinion, a smile suited her more than a frown!

Esta closed her eyes, the closest to a wince she was willing to come in front of her...new friend. Optimism was never something she'd had in abundance and that wasn't likely to change now. But she wouldn't tell Grace that.
"Thank you," she replied instead, looking away from the other mare for some way to...extricate herself, before the conversation got awkward again. Her eye fell on the lengthening shadows and widened.
"It's later than I thought," she mused, mostly to herself. "I'd better be going..."

"Late?" Grace echoed curiously, looked around before turning to look at the sky; was it this late already? She hadn't been paying any attention to the time! Then again, she hardly ever did. Nodding in belated agreement, the brightly colored female giggled as she turned her attention back to Esta, "It is getting late! I guess... Its best to head home before it gets dark."
Pausing, she smiled and added as an afterthought, "Maybe we will meet again soon."

Esta nodded, a small smile playing about her lips. "Meeting again...would be no bad thing, I think." Another glance at the sky. "But now, I must be going, as must you."
The white mare was terrible at goodbyes and she knew it, darting off into the snow that soon hid her from view with a whiteness so much like her own hide.

Grace watched as Esta disappeared into the distance, a smile on her lips as she knew that she had made a new friend... Yes, meeting again would be great. However, she knew that the mare was right; for now, she has to go home for the night.
Turning around, she allowed a yawn to escape her lips before trotting back the way she came, eager to return to her warm and comfy home.
