Amelia shrugged, "Depends on how damaged it is. If a dragon accidentally knocked it out of alignment or shifting in the rock itself creates stresses that weren't there previously the pillar needs to be replaced. In most cases temporary supports are built around the target pillar then it's dismantled and a new one erected. If it's badly damage, or in the process of failing, the replacement might be more then one pillar or a different, more suitable type."

She smiled despite herself, "Here, there's very little variation on the type of rock - it's all different types of volcanic rock. The Weyr's build on top of an extinct volcano - we're currently inside the rocks that make up the volcano's caldera. It's all very hard rock. However, fractures, joints, and water seepage can affect building plans but that's usually long term stuff the engineers have to worry about - excavators have to make sure it fits and fits perfectly the first time. We also find the occasional gem but they're not very pretty because they're raw." She held up her hands, showing the calloused palms and fingers, and dirt she never could quite get off from scrubbing, "Yeah... you worked at a forge? How was that?"

Sharath's gaze narrowed a bit, If he pinched anything of mine and I'll pinch fingers. I don't like theives, they take things that aren't theirs... only a fool would take from his queen.

Amelia eyed her dragon as she worked, "I hardly think he's implying he would steal from you, Sharath. Though I agree, thieves are sad people. I far prefer honest work."

Whoever was responsible for briefing the weyrbrats on the different crafthalls obviously didn't give the minecraft and its different specializations enough credit. J'lin nodded, drinking in every word. He didn't know when such trivia would come in handy, but hey -- you never knew!

"The forge was... hot." He began, "And nail making is tedious! You get a bit of ore, heat it up and shape it into a square rod, then hammer it into shape..." He shook his head. "Nails are always used and can get bent out of shape easily. They're a pain to make, and... well..."

Deprith nodded in agreement with Sharath. Men, she commented with contempt, Self-centered, loud, obnoxious beasts that think only of themselves! You are going to be a lot of work, J'lin. Oddly, she seemed... excited at the prospect of correcting Hers, nevermind how often she complained of him.

J'lin ignored Deprith's comment, shooting Sharath a hurt look. "Me? Not at all! My pinching just merely returned the favor of missing goods. Besides," he began, "I only did it to get by. Now... I think I can handle whatever gets thrown my way." He puffed himself at that. He was a junior dragonrider! Of course he could handle anything! Including His!

I heard that, J'lin!

...well, no one said it'd be easy.

Some males, perhaps, are like that... but I rather thought Ptoth and Roheth were good males... They looked very good that night, and were respectful. She snaked her head out towards Deprith ever so slightly, as if leaning in to gossip and it was clear she rather enjoyed their attentions. Males who know their place and know to have respect are good males, I think. Yours will be a good rider if he learns that.

Amelia smiled as she worked, bemused by the side of the chatter she could hear but wisely held her tongue. They were discussing boys, it seemed. "It sounds like interesting work, actually... but I guess if it's the only thing you do it could get tedious. I've never worked metal, really, just stone. Oops... out of oil." She'd gone to use more of the jar and realized it was empty, "I should go get some more. Thank-you very much for helping me, J'lin! I'll remember who to ask about dragonhide care." Grinning, she winked at him as she disappeared out the weyr's entrance.

Sharath viewed that as a dismissal for them and huffed at them, jerking her head towards the entrance, Tell Yours I thank him. And I thank you too, Deprith, I feel much better.

Mmm, indeed they were. The rest of them, however... Deprith shook her head, humming a sort of tsk tsk sound. I agree, but those that do not know, such as mine... He shall learn! She promised, For he is Mine and shall know his place!

J'lin looked at his dragon, an uneasy feeling fluttering in his stomach. He had a feeling that he didn't want to know what Deprith was up to, and yet at the same time he did. Or did he? "It was stubborn, somewhat like a certain dragon I know," he replied, "Except it's not possible to reshape a dragon." Deprith smirked at that. Oh, if only he knew what was in store for him! "Already? Oomph! Sorry about that," he said, shuffling his feet. "I guess there wasn't that much left from when I oiled Deprith last, and don't forget to grab another jar!"

To Sharath, Deprith respectfully bowed her head. That I shall, future Queen Sharath. Please excuse us. A nudge to J'lin's mind stirred him into giving the queen a quick bow before they too departed, J'lin to fetch more oil and Deprith to her own bed to await her rider's return.
