You'll be surprised how quickly you adjust, freshman year I went to band and it was a small shock (not much though cause the group was mostly freshman) and I adjusted pretty quickly, Sophomore year when I got put in our schools top band, it was a HUGE shock and I was scared to death of playing out, but I practiced a lot for a few weeks, caught up to the people in my section, now its my junior year, and now I'm one of the people ahead of the section. Trust me, if you really love band you'll make sure when you start high school to practice enough and catch up.

I'm going to be in highschool next year. My friend told me that you have to audition to be in the band(OBVIOUSLY) and...you have to make at least a very good and outstanding impression on the BD in order to be in the band. Any advice in doing that???

clarinet jjgonejellos son -oh- xd I can almost gaurauntee that as long as you don't give up, it'll be just as easy for you. True story: At the end of eighth grade, I was not a very good clarinet player. One summer through marching band, being surrounded by musicians that helped me, and etc, brought me to fourth chair during the school year.
May I ask what instrument you play?

ClarinetGoddess In eighth grade, I was an okay-playing upper chair(long story that i won't get into now>.>) and then I got to highschool...The worst is our fight song. Highest note clarinets can play, and the lowest note is E(topmost line on staff. ) Now, I can almost play it, and high notes are now pretty easy. I'm a sophomore, by the way there is no such thing as "the highest note a clarinet can play" at least not practically. and i can assure you that you did not go higher than a double high C...(this means TWO octaves ABOVE the staff) which isn't even near "the highest note"

its all about getting the chops. you'll adjust pretty fast. i used to hate playing high notes on my flute in 8th grade, now i like playing high notes on my PICCOLO, which is like 3 times harder to do. get to know the juniors and seniors because they'll help you out and give you tips.

its not easy, but a lot of hard work, and paintence will do the trick. I remember 8th grade was really hard getting them, but over the summer I tried holding long tones with the high notes, and that worked pretty well, and also helped me stay in tune better with my long tones.

I be freshman.
It's the hardest thing ever, with all the upperclassmen going "FRESHMENNN!" all the time, and the teachers expecting so much out of you.
But then you get to band, and if you end up being good, people get jealous and either love you or hate you.
Marching band, it's both combined. The upperclassmen want you to do perfectly, and then you always get yelled at. But you think about why you're there, and you remember you like to play.
BTW, when I say you, I really mean me.

You'll get a hang of it (: I'm still not very good though xD And I'm a sophmore in high school. I was second chair in junior high and 3rd chair now ;-; But the symphonic band people are amazing biggrin (We have a concert band/symphonic band system in my school) The only reason I'm not very good is because I'm in concert band and the people around just DON'T CARE. It makes it awfully hard for me to care either =/ Therefore, I don't practice.
