"Yeah, water." Mik stood as well, albeit with considerably less enthusiasm. He was really going to do this, wasn't he? But it was fine. He was allowed to do this, his guardian had taught him how, and it wasn't like he could actually get into trouble for it...although he really shouldn't think about it too much. It probably said something about him that the most questionable thing he had ever done - or was about to do, as it were - was baptize someone. Not that that particular thought occurred to him.

He headed for the kitchen to get a glass of cold water.

And Dusty, not having much else to do, followed after. If they were going to be dumping water on people, anyway, the kitchen was probably the best place to do it so that they could clean it up afterwards.

Likely, however, he didn't help Mik's own doubts much with his near-constant ramble as they walked.

"It is, y'know. An emergency," Dusty had begun the validation. "Hell, it was an emergency months ago, but I didn't know it was the answer yet, so it's just a lot more of an emergency now! Man, I don't even wanna think about it-- I mean, I'd tell you more about it, and then you'd know but like I said, it could cause trouble... but y'know, I promise I'll let you know someday. Just as soon as I can, right? Maybe someday soon, if I've got this figured out right."

It was very likely that Dusty had no clue just how irritating his voice might be coming off as right now, fidgeting and babbling. Or it was very likely that he didn't much care to wonder, and was happy enough just to have something to keep his mind busy. One way or another, though, this was probably going to end a long wait for him - and he had a lot of nerves to work through on that short trip to the kitchen.

Mikhail more or less tuned out the deerkitten's rambling, quietly fetching a glass, then filling it with cold water from the sink. Yeah. Yeah, he was definitely doing this. It was hard not to think about it, especially because he was worried he wouldn't get the words right. Which was silly, because it was simple - but should he do it in Latin or in English? Not that it mattered, but that was the sort of thing going through his head.

"Just, um." Glass full, he turned to Dusty. "Be quiet and hold still, alright?"

"And close your eyes," he added as an afterthought. It would be easier if he wasn't being looked at.

"Uhm." Dusty suddenly realized he was carrying his bag around with him. After a quick glance of the kitchen, he awkwardly tossed it to the side so that it slid across the floor to bump against the wall, and then he was ready. "Okay. Quiet, hold still, close eyes."

I can do that.

So he did. He stood about as calmly as he could, given the situation - which meant he was standing steel-spined with cringed shoulders, anticipating the cold water that was bound to hit him at any given moment. He kept quiet with his lips pressed tight together, nostrils flaring. And he screwed his eyes shut, as though he feared one little peek would ruin the whole affair.

In short, Dusty looked more like he was lined up for a firing squad, less like he was about to undergo a miraculous transformation. But hey - he'd never been to one of these things before, how was he supposed to know the difference?

Alright. He could do this. He was an angel, for Christ's sake. It was fine. While he couldn't help but notice that Dusty looked ready to meet his doom instead of a little cold water, Mik was past caring. He took a deep breath, doing his best to settle himself.

"Te baptizo," he began, fighting back anxiety to keep it from his voice, "In nomine Patris..."

Shakily, he poured some of the water on Dustin's head.

"E Filii..."

More water, some of it splashing on the floor.

"E Spiritus Sancti."

The last of the water, and it was done.

Aside from flinching, Dusty handled himself manfully throughout the whole affair. At the very least, he failed to burst into flames, which is doubtless what his Guardian would have assumed to be the result of such an event. Once the last dribbles of water were running off toward the kitchen tile (what drops weren't clinging to his hair and face, yech he hated the feeling of wetness on his skin,) his shoulders finally relaxed.

The child hesitated a few seconds after, then wiped the water off his face. "It's over? I can open my eyes again, right?" He was doing so anyway, of course, without waiting for permission, daring a look at the angel. Dusty certainly didn't feel different - but hey, he hadn't fully expected to in the first place. In some ways this was just a formality, after all. In others... well, maybe more of a promise. He wasn't sure yet.

No, Dusty did not burst into flames, although Mikhail could probably have arranged that. But there was no fire, no divine lightning...just a wet deerkitten and a wet kitchen floor. It was, really, quite uneventful, not that the redhead had expected otherwise. It hadn't even been that hard, once he'd convinced himself to just do it and get it over with.

"Yeah," he answered, not that Dusty actually waited for it, and moved to deposit the glass in the sink.

At a lack for much else to say, Dusty went to search out dish towel to wipe up the tiny puddle on the floor with.

Now that it was over... well, to be honest, he felt a touch silly. Did this make him "pure"? Would it satisfy Nil, give him the opening into Camelot that he needed? Did it mean anything, or was it just... a tiny scene in a play, awkward and unfulfilling, that would be easily forgotten later?

Something occurred to him, and it was something worth asking now. "Say Mik. Before, you said you were having problems with this stuff, didn't you?" Dustin asked, dropping a green-checkered towel onto the damp spot and nudging it around with his foot. "I mean... y'know, just wondering. If you're an angel, how can that be?"

"That's...part of the problem, I guess," he said, turning back to lean against the counter and watch Dusty mop up. "It's not that I don't believe in God or anything, it's just...the rest of it. I used to believe it all, but now I know not all of it's right. I know there's more. That there are other gods, other powers, other Heavens, and that they're real."

Again, he took a deep breath. He'd never actually talked about this with anyone, not at length. But why shouldn't he? Maybe it would help. He needed to stop trying to ignore it, anyway. "And if He's supposed to know everything, then why just...leave me there, knowing I would die?"

His frustration, his confusion, were evident.

"Well, I'm sorta glad He did, y'know."

The water was all wiped up - it's not like there was a lot to clean up in the first place, after all - but Dusty kept rubbing at the spot. It was a good excuse to make himself look mindless, like he was just saying what came to mind without thinking about it, maybe without fully meaning it.

"I mean, I like you like you are. Fa'e and all, with the rest of us." He finally decided then that the water was cleaned up, and plucked the towel off the ground. He just tossed it in the sink - the fairies would get it later, doubtlessly.

That stopped him for a minute. No one had ever said anything like that to him before, and it was coming from one of the last people he'd have expected. Dusty was just full of surprises today, apparently. "I..."

"I am, too," he said finally, thoughtfully. And maybe, just maybe, that was the point. That this was what he was meant to be.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 10, 2009 1:30 am

"Good." Then that's enough of that, Dusty's tone said clearly. He wasn't much for this bro-love or whatever, and if anyone ever asked him if he'd said anything like that to Mik, he'd deny it. Flat-out lie and say it never happened.

... Except maybe that was sinning now. Uhm. He'd have to consider the repercussions of his new faith closely and find a way around it, maybe.

Perking up with forced energy, Dusty grinned and hopped into motion. "Hey, well, I owe you again, okay?" the deerkitten declared, making his way backwards toward the kitchen door. "I've gotta get going, now, see if I can't catch up with somebody and shake some answers out of them. But you and me, we'd better catch up once everything's back to normal, okay? I'll buy you lunch or something!" Buy being a very satisfying word - once this was over, and he could go back home without fear, have all the disposable income that he could earn through chores and businesses, and enjoy a life of little responsibility once more. He really did owe Mik a big thanks if this paid off, that was for damn sure. Now, Dusty just had to make sure he didn't screw it up before then!
