"One would hope they would be the perfect specimens of the both of us," Raniero replied smoothly, catching her little 'trap' before she had the opportunity to tease him further. For all intents and purposes, Raniero would be rather satisfied by the knowledge that the children were both physically and intellectually able. If they possessed the strengths of both parents then it would ensure that their training and education would be easy. More importantly, they would be able to show his father exactly how well bred they were. 'Mixed blood' they may have been by definition, but for all intents and purposes they were pure in his mind.

...Their blood was diluted enough as is!

Nevertheless, the knowledge that Raniero would not have to lug his hide up to Islagiatt's more hostile regions was a relief. The doctors within Islagiatt were good, but even he understood that in certain situations it was of greater comfort to have a family member by your side. In the case of Marut, he was content in the knowledge that her mother and more experienced families members would be at her side in such a trying time. Admittedly, the scholarly part of him would have quite liked the opportunity to observe the proceedings but he had been informed rather roughly that it was incredibly inappropriate.

Shame really.

"Just so long as both are aware of what they are doing and you are happy with the decision you've made, then I will be too."

'There is a chance of that as well, but there's also no telling how they will truly be. Except our well-loved children.'

Marut was thinking of her sister when she said that. Neither of her parents were as fearful as she was, so where did that come from? She supposed if she were to put that to Raniero he would spout forth some logical reason for it. She smiled at that thought, but decided not to give him the opportunity.

Her tail swished, flicking at an errant, late fly that was buzzing around her belly.

'The midwife definately will know. My mother said she helped a friend of her own birth her first foals, and that went smoothly so..at least I know there will be one calm mare on that day.'

She looked at him.

'Did you want to be there when it happens?'

A vision of panicking mares all mimicking one anothers practised breathing patterns threatened to cause a rather inappropriate smile to appear on his lips. Instead, his eyes creased and twinkled as he surpressed his urges and he shook his head. It would be a clearing of the throat and a slight adjustment of his weight from one leg to the other before he would recover to sufficient levels to converse again. However he hadn't anticipated that she would ask if he wanted to be present and a part of him couldn't really figure out whether she wanted him there for support or simply because she recognised he would find the entire thing fascinating. Perhaps it was a little bit of both and for once in his life he wasn't really certain of the correct way to respond.

He knew it was inappropriate to be present as he was male, but a part of him couldn't permit the mare to do it on her own if she genuinely needed him. More disturbingly, he didn't really believe he had the strength to watch her go through it. If he hadn't been her mate and he had a level of detatchment it would be significantly easier. If it were someone else it would just be another specimen but Marut was definitely not one of those... not anymore at least.

"Then I am comforted by the knowledge you will be well supported," he replied, his voice measured. The curiosity in him had dissipated in the wake of such a revelation. It wasn't often that the stallion was torn and it left him feeling rather disconcerted. "And I think it would be best if the birthing was left to the females in this circumstance," he added after a few moments, failing to mention why he felt this was more appropriate.

'Really? You're not in the least bit curious?' Marut wondered if he would attend if she particularly asked him to be there, although having spoken with Ardia about it, she wasn't sure if a worried mate on top of her mother's fretting would help her. It wasn't as if he could do anything beyond giving moral support, and if she was in a lot of pain she might say something that they would both regret.

Would he be worried though, would there be any real stress on his part? Despite how long they had now known each other, she still wasn't completely aware of the depth of his feelings. She knew he cared in his own and unique way, she knew he wouldn't lie about that. Was he staying away because he didn't want to see her in pain?

'You'll be in the area though? I would like to be able to let you know straight away when they are born, well, my mother has promised that she will find you for me.'

"I wouldn't be me if I wasn't curious," he pointed out with a wry smile, his brow lifting a little at her query. He may not have been an open book to her but the day he was indifferent to some new fact or piece of information would be the day the paramedics would need to be called. Hopefully they would have developed a cat scan for horses by then as he'd probably need his head testing. Alas, he suspected that a part of her query was designed more so to comfort herself, this was confirmed when she sought out confirmation that he would be nearby during the process. Now there was a thought and internally he winced slightly, he couldn't very well deny her that support but it would mean that he was subject to any verbal assault she might howl over the tree tops.

Wonderful.

"Rest assured I may not be in the immediate area but I will make myself easy to find," he murmured softly and pursed his lips. He would have to ensure he was recognisable of course, no peculiar disguises that day. Additionally he would have to make sure he didn't wander into regions that were too thick or dark so as not to impede the vision of the messenger. In short, he was just going to have to plant himself under a tree somewhere and watch the world go by which was not the most desirable of options. For a start, he often failed miserably at remaining idle and found great pleasure in observing individuals... but he also knew that even if he did watch the soquili drift back and forth he would still remain distracted. It did beg the question as to why the hell he'd gotten into this situation!

Of course he knew why, it was just a staggering amount of hassle for the male who hadn't anticipated he would behave in such a manner.

"Neve should have no qualms in locating me, I assure you of this."

'You are correct, whatever was I thinking!' Marut laughed, giving him a gentle flick with her tail.
'I suppose you just don't want to hear any abuse I might heap on you once the pains get under way.'

She nodded;
'I'd appreciate that, and so would my mother..' she added with a smile, as if she knew what he was thinking, but then given how he looked when they had met, it wasn't much of a stretch for her to think of it.

'No looking like a female either..please.'
The mare gave him a look of amused pleading, not wanting her mother to find that little nugget out about him. At all. Ever.

The expression on her face almost made him want to cross dress again, but the memory of the length of time it had taken to dress in such a manner was ripe in his mind and was enough to deter. Really, the prospect of flitting about here and there dressed as a female during the most important day of his mate (and his own) life was ridiculous. No, despite her expression he would avoid such games and would remain as respectable and presentable as he always was - his mother would find him male and as lithe as ever, really it was still rather surprising she had chosen a scholar over a sportsman but it made him smirk internally.

And they said clever men had no appeal!

"Let's go with that," Raniero agreed in reference to the stereotype of typical male cowardice when it came to pregnancy. It was better for him that she didn't know the depth of his desire to not observe, he wasn't sure he had the ability to keep face if she did. Nevertheless, it would probably bring her additional comfort to know he was like any other male in some respect even if that wasn't entirely accurate. "My delicate manner wouldn't be able to deal with the language."

'Why thank you.' Marut nuzzled him, a silly rush of affection for her scholarly mate coming over her. Or maybe it was the hormones. Whatever it was, she was happy to be with him.

She laughed at those words.
'You have a delicate manner?' her belly swayed, wobbling a little as she laughed and she tried to calm down. Delicate manner indeed! If she'd had been the least bit sensitive a mare, theirs was a relationship that would never have got off the ground.

'Please..I'm not sure this much laughter is good for the foals.'

Ahhhh no one appreciated his definition of 'delicate' at all, he gave her a half smile as she broke into fits of laughter and shook his head. She truly was the only mare in the world who could get away with insulting him! After a while though he did take note of her rather over emotional manner and lifted a brow, she certainly was full of an array of them recently. A part of him was acutely aware of the desire to tell her to rest but another part of him also respected her right to make decisions. For a time he seemed to wrestle with both sides until at last he regarded her with another level gaze and pursed his lips - his paternal side one out (much to the chagraine of his usual nature) and he had only one thing to say to the mare as she giggled and swayed.

"I think it's time you rested," he advised gently and gave her neck a nudge. A smile did tease at his lips, obviously smug that he had entertained and reassured her well enough for her spirits to improve. She may be in for trying times but he wouldn't let these pressures get to her so long as it could be avoided. Despite his 'good' relations with his father there were sometimes when he could be as impenetrable as marble too!

"And rest assured, laughter is a good thing for children - it just means they'll have a good sense of humour," he pointed out and lifted a brow. Admittedly his definition of a good sense of humour was probably different than most, but if they had a mix of his and Marut's then he was confident they would be just fine. "But I mean it, rest - you need to keep up your strength," he ordered more firmly.

'You're trying to get rid of me so that you can get back to whatever if was that I interupted you from doing.' Marut poked her tongue out at him; and she was to be a mother? She hoped that her mischevious streak would mean she was a good mother, one able to understand the many scrapes foals got themselves into.

'Fine, fine, I can take a hint.' she gave him an affectionate n** on the neck, and looked around.

'I'll see you again soon? You can come visit me..no one in my family will bite.' she said over her shoulder before moving off, her rounded belly gently swaying as she walked.
