Skip's eyes glanced upward at the mention of his sunglasses. He loved his shades. The ones he was currently wearing were his favorite pair, and the boy wore them every chance he got. The only times he can recall taking them off, actually, was when he was taking a shower or during some sort of sporting event of some kind. And even then, they came right back on after. Yes, young mister Parker had an affinity for sunglasses of any sort, evident by his collection of them back at home.
"Sure do," Skip explained with a laugh, sliding his shades off of his head and on to their proper place over his eyes. "These sunglasses are the best."
Just as the two of them made their way around a curve in the track, something caught his eye. Karmi's necklace. It was a pretty little thing. Now that he thought about it, though, he always saw her with it on. Did she ever take it off? If not, that was yet another thing they had in common with each other: a fondness for a particular accessory. Her neckless suited her, that was for sure. Yet at the same time he couldn't help but wonder what the story behind it was.
"What that necklace around your neck? I've never really seen you without it."

"They look good on you." She said, then glanced down at her necklace. "I suppose this necklace is like your sunglasses. Although..." she paused for a second, "Well, this might sound silly, but it's my good luck charm. I feel lost without it." Glancing back at him after the turn, the thought crossed her mind that it could be that Skip also felt lost without his sunglasses. Though she would never be bold enough to ask that.
As they kept on the straightaway, she remained somewhat quiet. It had been going well for them, she had to admit. A nice, open track with clear skies. A new friend to go running with. "So, Skip." She started, "You plan to do this every month on the half-days?" A smile crossed her face. "You're one of the few who can keep pace with me and I'd love a running partner." She blushed slightly at the forwardness of her statement.

"I don't think it sounds silly. Everyone has something they consider to be their good luck charm."
The two of them had been jogging for a bit it seemed. Time for a break. Skip definitely needed one, and a cool drink of water, too! It was as the baseball player slowed his jog down to a walk that he pondered Karmi's question. Jogging every month on half-days; that didn't sound so bad. To be perfectly honest, it was actually a good idea. The jogging would keep him in shape during the off-season.
Karmi's blushed caused him to smirk. Most guys probably would have tried to slink their arm around the girl's neck and shoulder at this point, but Skip found himself refraining. Instead, he stuck his hands into the pockets of his shorts and kept walking. "I'd love to be your running partner, Karmi. Heck, it doesn't even have to be once a month, either."
He then paused, turned his head ever so slightly, and glanced back at her over his shoulder. "How does after school every Friday sound?"

Karmi slowed her pace and turned, smiling at him. Normal guys had often let her down on propositions, or tried to hit on her. She truly appreciated the nicer, more gentleman-like attitude about it.
"You know what?" She said, smiling wide. "That sounds great!" She laughed, enjoying the small break. Sweat was apparent on her brow, as the sun had risen higher before slowly falling to the position it held now. Wiping it off, she kept her eyes on Skip. Truly, he was one of the nicer boys she had met since she started going to Meadowview. It was a rarity to see, and it made her happy.
"So every Friday after school I'll meet you right here and we can jog together." she repeated back to him.
It was exciting to her. While the rest of the Track team was away, she had made a friend to jog with and help keep her in shape for next season. Not only that, but she had to admit he was adorable in his own way. Though she would never admit that outside of a thought here and there. What she did know was that Skip and her were probably going to get along just fine and that she had made a new friend.

After Karmi repeated their newly formed plans, Skip confirmed them with a satisfied nod of his head. So, it was settled. Every Friday from that day on, the two of them would be jogging buddies. It couldn't work out better for either of them, now that he thought about it. Both of the athletes gained something from this arrangement: a workout partner.
"Sounds good," Skip said as he wiped off his own brow, "so I'll see you next Friday then."
There wasn't much that needed to be said after that. So instead of making it a long goodbye, the baseball player just nodded his head to the girl. Before parting ways, though, he did one more thing. A hand reached up and lifted up his sunglasses for a split second, red orbs meeting directly with Karmi's green ones. Leaving without making direct eye-contact wouldn't do at all. How rude was that? As soon as he gave his new-found friend one last glass, his sunglasses were back on again and he was making his way off of the field.
Conditioning hadn't been a total loss. Time that he thought he was going to spend alone was actually spent with a new friend, and Skip had enjoyed himself. And what made it even better? Skip couldn't wait to hear what his teammates would say once he told them all what had happened.
"Later, Karmi!"
