'Okay,' she said, agreeing because her stomach was now just reminding her how long it had been since she'd dare to venture out and feed herself. She stepped away from the tree, stretching her legs and shaking out the stiffness in her neck.

'A nickname?'
Well, she'd never been asked that before. She supposed that she didn't have one, well not beyond the teasing names her siblings came up with, but those were more mocking because of what she was like, and not something she would want him to know.

'Maharet is fine. Do you..have a nickname?'
She quite liked his name as it was, but maybe he had something his friends called him, he was such a pleasant fellow, she could imagine he had a fair few.

"I have one." Lifting his head, he let his mind drift back to his childhood briefly. It had been quite some time since he'd seen his brother, so he wasn't sure if he still had a nickname or not. Perhaps it was a childhood nickname? In any case, it hadn't really carried over into adulthood, except the time Misti had used it.

Glancing toward her, he smiled. "Joxer. My brother, Tobias, called me that when we were young. I haven't seen him in a while, though."

He wondered how Tobias was. Idly, as he usually did, he thought that he needed to keep in touch with him.

Mind drifting back to the present, he shrugged. "I should take some time to track him down. It always seems to slip my mind, though."

'Joxer? Why that?' Maharet asked, settling next to him, and awaiting for him to move off, not wanting to walk without him. Well, she didn't know the proper way to where they were going at any rate.

'Oh, you have a brother?'
She supposed he must have family, they just hadn't really talked of it. Obviously he knew she had some family. He had met one of them. She wondered what he thought of her relatives; her grandmother hadn't made the best of impressions after all.

'I have 4 brothers, I don't see them much though. I guess that's the way of males, leaving the family home.'

"I don't really know." Grinning, Jonquil began to walk again, tail swinging behind him. "He just started calling me Joxer, and I didn't really mind. Still don't, actually; I met a mare who called me that too, but I haven't seen her in a while."

In truth, his family was large and interesting, though he didn't know most of them half as well as he should have. That was his fault, ever since he'd grown; sure his father and he stuck together, but he could've made the effort to go out and seek the other members of his family. He'd still like to, probably, but he also thought it might be a little awkward. Still, family was family, and he knew his mother would be happy to see him.

"My family is... unconventional." Following a line of trees, he began to lead her down a hill. The river was visible now, flowing gently, and ringed by flowers. "But I don't know if it's just the males who leave home. I've met a fair few traveling females. I think it just depends on who you are, and what you want from life."

He was silent a moment before adding, "I like to travel, but I'm just as happy staying home, around loved ones. One day, I'd like to have a family home of my own, but I'm not looking to rush it."

A mare? Maharet examined her feelings after he said that, unsure as to what the flare of emotion had been. What was that about?

'Joxer..I could call you that? But only if you wanted.' she said, hastily adding the latter so he didn't think she was taking liberties. She never wanted him to think ill of her.

'Well I suppose that is true. I'm really not an expert, this being the furthest and longest I've ever been from home.'
At some point a message would have to be sent to her mother, she thought with a sudden flash of guilt. What if she was worried, and was thinking the worst? After all, this was very unusual for Maharet.

'So you've not got a mate?' she asked suddenly, after falling quiet whilst they were walking. What did that matter? she asked herself. Really, her thoughts were becoming beyond her control!

Because the place was visible now, he began to slow his walk, enjoying the approach nearly as much as he would the actual experience. It was the little things in life that he enjoyed most, and he thought that was how it should be.

Glancing to her, he said honestly, "You can call me anything you'd like, Maharet. I won't mind."

She was easy to talk to. More and more, Jonquil realized how much he liked her. He hadn't ever felt like he was obligated to spend time with her, but it was nice to have someone around that he sincerely enjoyed.

At the question of a mate, he shook his head, looking surprised and a little embarrassed. "No, I don't have a mate. Haven't found anyone who suited, you know?"

Maybe he never would. As far as he knew, his father hadn't. The thought troubled him a bit.

"I'd, er, like to, though. As I said, a family would be nice one day."

'Anything at all?' Maharet replied, trying her best to look slightly devious, though she'd never before even thought about affecting a look of that sort! She dropped the attempt, instead just smiling, in case she looked peculiar.

'What are you looking for then..if I'm not being too nosey in asking.' she gave him a friendly bump, a nudge with her nose to his shoulder.

Maharet wasn't entirely sure herself on the whole family subject. Truthfully she would like the affection she saw between her mother and father, and Marut seemed very happy with her own mate, but what of children? She didn't want to be one of those mothers who passed irrational fears onto their offspring.

'You'd be a good father.' she said, and she knew that to be true. He was kind, caring and easy to be around, yet seemed sensible with it.

It was nice to have Maharet relax around him. Though the subject they were discussing could be a little embarrassing if it wasn't handled delicately, he thought they would do all right. After all, they were friends, and he felt nothing but easy around her. He felt like he could talk to her about most anything, and it was a welcome relief.

He had friends, sure, but it was nice to have a best friend. That was what he was coming to see her as, anyway. He hoped she felt the same.

Ears tipping toward her, he mused, "I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I just know I want someone to be there, you know? My parents didn't stay together, and that worked for them. But I think I want someone to stay by my side, raise a family with."

The thought was a nice one.

Curious, he asked, "What about you?"

She was pleased that he didn't consider the subject one not to be talked about..though she wondered if Jonquil was thinking there was a motive behind her asking. There wasn't, not really, she wasn't sly enough nor properly aware if she had feelings of that nature for him to be that way.

Maharet nodded, she did know. She supposed that might be what she wanted if she took the time to think on it, to think if it even might happen for her.

'Patience and understanding I guess.' she replied, in reference to her skittish nature. Truly she couldn't see herself being attracted to anyone who belittled her, or made fun of her fears.

'Affectionate and willing to commit.'
That was added because she knew at one point her mother and father had problems..well her father mostly, he'd left during her mother's second pregnancy, feeling trapped or some other nonsense. They were happy and together now, but she knew Neve had been knocked for six when their father left.

While open and generally quick on the spot, Jonquil didn't suspect Maharet of any any ulterior motives. He'd be hard pressed to suspect her of much of anything, given how skittish she'd shown herself to be, and so he was blissfully unaware of even the slightest notion.

It was probably for the best. Otherwise, he might have gotten very awkward around her. While he was friendly and warm to just about everyone, the thought of being in an actual relationship made Jonquil a bit shy. He knew he wanted one - eventually - and he knew he wanted it to last - hopefully. He just didn't know if he was prepared to pursue one at that exact moment.

"I think that would be best for you, too." He grinned, nosing her shoulder. "I think any stallion for you would also have to have a sense of humor, though, right? He'd need to be able to make you smile, make you laugh."

What was a life without humor? He didn't want to think about it.

'The way you do you mean?' Maharet replied, all innocence. She really did find him the easiest, and nicest stallion to be around, she even was more comfortable with him than she was her own brothers!

She fell quiet, listening to the river gurgling away next to where they walking. The conversation wasn't making her uncomfortable..it was making her think. Would she even know those kind of feelings if they presented themselves to her? And would she have the courage to pursue them, regardless of her worries?

A little dense Jonquil might have been, but to have the conversation turn to him in the immediate context? Even he could connect a couple of dots. His cheeks warmed slightly and he laughed, certain she hadn't meant anything by it, but still considering the subject nonetheless.

He was pretty comfortable with Maharet. He was already beginning to think of her as his best friend, so was it really so much of a stretch? And, the kind of guy he'd described... well, that could certainly be himself. With someone like her, though, who had so much to fear in the world, it would have to be her decision if she wanted to pursue a relationship with anyone. He was happy and fine enough to just be her friend.

Right?

Right.

"I guess!" Not wanting it to become awkward for either of them, he leaned over, bumping shoulders as his tail brushed along her back legs. "So, someone like me."

Thoughtfully, he added honestly, "I think someone like you could be good for me, too. Well, we make great friends, so that should be obvious, right?"

'Yes, someone like you.' Maharet echoed, looking at Jonquil. How nice that would be, to find a mate who was as friendly as he, as generous and kind. Brave too. So why not him? Mostly because she didn't believe that she was good enough for him for that. Friends yes, but he should have someone as outgoing as him. It was a nice thought though..

She smiled at him, gently nudging him back, and then gave him a look, one of surprise mostly.

'You want a mare that's afraid of things do you?' she asked, shaking her head and laughing quietly.
